Abstract:A comparative analysis of the works by L. Tolstoy and L. Andreev shows that contemporary writers, responding to the demands of the time, developed common themes in their work, which were considered, however, in line with the tasks set by each of them. A strong rejection of any forms of violence, first of all, war, was reflected in such works as “Sevastopol Stories” and in the novel “War and Peace” by L. Tolstoy, in the story “Red Laughter” and in the novel “The Yoke of War” by L. Andreev as well as in their social and political journalism. In the works of both Tolstoy and Andreev the main idea is that war is the violation of the main law of life, according to which a person should live as long as God has given them. Anti-war agenda is especially vital today. The aim of the article is to demonstrate how modern the protest against any wars sounds in the works by Tolstoy and Andreev. Both the writers stand with ‘the little man’ the victim of “the yoke of war” and “the red laughter”. The call “Come to your senses!” that sounded at the beginning of the XX century was unfortunately not heard, which we can judge about by the wars and revolutions of the XX–XXI centuries.

Abstract:What are the effects of authoritarian regimes on scholarly research in economics? And how might economic theory survive ideological pressures? The article addresses these questions by focusing on the mathematization of economics over the past century and drawing on the history of Soviet science. Mathematics in the USSR remained internationally competitive and generated many ideas that were taken up and played important roles in economic theory. These same ideas, however, were disregarded or adopted only in piecemeal fashion by Soviet economists, despite the efforts of influential scholars to change the economic research agenda. The article draws this contrast into sharper focus by exploring the work of Soviet mathematicians in optimization, game theory, and probability theory that was used in Western economics. While the intellectual exchange across the Iron Curtain did help advance the formal modeling apparatus, economics could only thrive in an intellectually open environment absent under the Soviet rule.

Abstract:The article uses the anthropocentric approach to the description of the grammatical category of the verbs aspects in order to consider how its use contributes to the creation of an image of the world in accordance with the creative intent of the author of the literary text. The main subject of the study is L.N. Tolstoy's novel «War and Peace». Applying the concept situation frame, the researcher analyzes how the writer overcomes the fragmentary image of events inherent in human thinking and creates a global view of the course of history as a linking of numerous actions of characters acts the background of a historical panorama. The article shows the specific choice of perfect and imperfect verbs in the novel, contributing to the creation of such an image of the historical process.

Abstract:The work is devoted to the study of the writer’s metaphysical views, which are reflected in the “Code of Thoughts of Leo Tolstoy”. The author deals with issues related to the history of the creation of the Code — a unique source, which was worked on by the Tolstovians V.G. Chertkov, F.A. Strakhov and others from the late 1880s to the early 1920s. It was supposed to reflect all aspects of Tolstoy’s worldview, including the main provisions of Tolstoy’s metaphysical concept: ideas about the divine principle, the soul, spiritual life, mind and consciousness, and the peculiarities of Tolstoy’s perception of the categories of material world. The author reconstructs Tolstoy’s metaphysics as it is presented in the Code, draws attention to the peculiarities of the compilers’ perception of certain issues of Tolstoy’s philosophy, and compares them with the interpretations of these issues available in the research literature. The article substantiates the relevance of studying and introducing into scientific circulation a source that gives a complete picture of Tolstoy’s personality, work and worldview.

Abstract:Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy's departure from this earth took place in 1910, a year that has since become a common touchstone for Russians. The twentieth century came to a symbolic close, beginning a terrible era of changes that saw the Russian author's humanist ideas and religious inquiries burned and melted down. The terrible age seemed to consume everything that humanity had valued over the centuries: poetry, faith, morality, freedom love; everything man lived by, to use Tolstoy's own expression. After Auschwitz, the very thought of man as a superior and rational being created in the image and likeness of God was drained of all its blood. But perhaps, thanks to his genius, the world has gradually thawed and returned to man, gazing upon him anew, but with the loving eyes of Tolstoy.

Abstract:The article deals with the female characters in “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy. The aim of the article is to advance a new view at Tolstoy’s heroines and to improve and extend the modern ideas of Tolstoy’s gender perceptions. The applied methods are the structural, semiotic and mythopoetics analyses. General opinion about Tolstoy’s gender perceptions is based on the character of Natasha Rostova. The usual approach to the study of Tolstoy’s matrimonial philosophy has passed into belief that Natasha Rostova is the main and the ideal female character in Tolstoy’s novel. So it is generally accepted that Leo Tolstoy gives recognition to the patriarchal family only (Bezukhov’s family in the epilogue of “War and Peace”). But to obtain a fuller understanding of Tolstoy’s gender perceptions it is necessary to introduce the analysis of other female characters. First of all, it is princess Mary. She became aware of the cruelty of war and overcame the tragedy of loneliness. She is a self-sacrificing daughter and aunt (her little nephew is an orphan). So her life is much more sorrowful than Natasha’s. However, her family in the epilogue of “War and Peace” is not patriarchal. Tolstoy represented two kinds of women and two types of families in the epilogue of his novel. According to the traditional view, Tolstoy confines a woman to her family circle, but the character of princess Mary is connected not only with the family problems, but with the problems of philosophy of history, folk confidence, non-resistance and the most profound spiritual achievements of Tolstoy’s as well. The image of Princess Mary Bolkonskaya in Tolstoy’s novel “War and peace” is a rare female image in the history of world literature that invites the reader to discuss a wide range of topical philosophical, religious, and socio-historical issues.

Abstract:Contrary to the critics of Tolstoy's War and Peace who have interpreted the Second Epilogue as an aberration in the novel that distracts from the merits of the work, I argue that Tolstoy spells out the crucial principles that organize the entire novel in the Second Epilogue. In the Second Epilogue, Tolstoy presents his philosophy of consciousness and memory that, in turn, informs his philosophy of history that is similar to Augustine's conceptions of the city of God and the city of man. Tolstoy's comments, therefore, about God, freedom, and history in the Second Epilogue make War and Peace a philosophical work that has literary elements within it rather than a literary work with philosophical aspects.

Abstract:This article re-examines Lev Tolstoy’s novel Voina i mir (War and Peace) in light of recent research in the field of translingual literary studies. This Russian novel contains numerous passages, phrases, and words in French. Tolstoy’s extensive use of the French language in a Russian novel puzzled many of his contemporary critics; it has also tended to be less visible in translations into other languages. The article surveys previous research on the multilingual dimension of War and Peace by well-known scholars such as Viktor Vinogradov, Viktor Shklovsky, Boris Uspensky, R. F. Christian, and Gary Saul Morson. Among the explanations offered for the presence of French in the text are realism, characterization, and ostranenie (defamiliarization). Applying Formalist principles and Thomas O. Beebee’s concept of transmesis, the current article suggests a translingual reading of this canonical novel. The analysis focuses on selected passages in which multiple languages are at play, showing how they draw the reader’s attention to language as a medium through depictions of code-switching and multilingual situations; metalinguistic commentary; biscriptuality; and code-mixing on the level of the text.

Abstract:We compare several approaches to the history of mathematics recently proposed by Blasjo, Fraser--Schroter, Fried, and others. We argue that tools from both mathematics and history are essential for a meaningful history of the discipline. In an extension of the Unguru-Weil controversy over the concept of geometric algebra, Michael Fried presents a case against both Andre Weil the "privileged observer" and Pierre de Fermat the "mathematical conqueror." We analyze Fried's version of Unguru's alleged polarity between a historian's and a mathematician's history. We identify some axioms of Friedian historiographic ideology, and propose a thought experiment to gauge its pertinence. Unguru and his disciples Corry, Fried, and Rowe have described Freudenthal, van der Waerden, and Weil as Platonists but provided no evidence; we provide evidence to the contrary. We analyze how the various historiographic approaches play themselves out in the study of the pioneers of mathematical analysis including Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, and Cauchy.

Abstract:Painstaking realism is an essential feature of the fiction of Count Leo Tolstoy. One example of Tolstoy's attention to detail is the description of the death of Prince Nicholas Bolkonski in War and Peace. The information provided in War and Peace allows the identification of the prince's terminal illness as a brain-stem stroke and is probably the first description of the one-and-a-half syndrome. Prince Bolkonski is also portrayed as suffering from a dementing process. Tolstoy used the character of Prince Bolkonski to exemplify the rationalistic, Western-influenced aristocracy that dominated Russia at the end of the 18th century. Prince Bolkonski's decline and apoplectic death parallel the fate of Enlightenment thought in Eastern Europe. The clinical detail employed in this case illustrates how Tolstoy used symbolic characters without sacrificing the realism of War and Peace.

Abstract:Tolstoy, the author of two masterpieces, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, remains a writer of genius. Yet, after writing War and Peace, his existence had been torn apart by a serious depression. This depression, which was melancholic in character, almost destroyed him and, once he had finished Anna Karenina, led him to want to renounce not only sexuality but also literary creation and material possessions. Through examining Tolstoy's life and work, the author tries to uncover the underground paths of this depression, which emerged brutally in the middle of his life, and to understand why his creative genius dried up. Like Leonardo da Vinci, Tolstoy turned away from his artistic work, declaring that 'art is not only useless but even harmful', and thereafter devoted himself to philosophical, political and religious writings. These new sublimations would help him to recover his health.

Abstract:Abstract Tolstoy had a life-long interest in education and philosophy. However, he was suspicious of using philosophy as a foundation for educational practice or applying philosophy to the educational problems of his day, most importantly, the development of an education system in Russia around the time of the emancipation of the serfs. Tolstoy’s rejection of the philosophy of education arose from his concerns about what would be identified in contemporary terminology as ‘epistemic injustice’ or ‘epistemicide’. How could European philosophy inform a curriculum and pedagogy for the Russian peasantry when the peasants’ own forms of knowledge were more valuable to their ways of life? Tolstoy sought to answer this question by engaging with children in peasant schools. This experience informed the development of his own worldview, articulated in the latter years of his life – a vision of uniting the insights of indigenous peoples from various times and places to inform what he considered to be the pursuit of authentic knowledge. This article considers Tolstoy’s apparent rejection of the philosophy of education, exploring how this seemingly bombastic position led to the evolution of an innovative meta-philosophy that offers some contribution to thinking about contemporary educational problems.

Abstract:The article deals with the problem of Nikolay Strakhov's assessment of the genre originality in Leo Tolstoy's works. The author of the article believes that Strakhov's philosophical observations of the 1870-s were especially significant for the artistic and moral search of Tolstoy, who, mainly under the influence of Strakhov's ideas, strove for allinclusiveness. Strakhov was the first to speak boldly enough about the religious foundations of Tolstoy's art, which demanded a special artistic form that could «embrace the unembraceable», accommodate people's life in its diversity and fullness. Strakhov's articles on War and Peace make accurate remarks about the artist's epic talent based on religious art, about his elevation above the traditional novel conflict. The author of the article shows that unlike K. N. Leontiev, who spoke of Tolstoy's growing objectivity as he freed himself from the allegedly pernicious influence of the natural school, Strakhov in his articles on War and Peace stresses the writer's truthfulness, absence of hypocrisy and reveals remarkable features of his epic narrative. In Tolstoy's works, life is not generalized in advance, the writer's position does not obscure the versatile and complex nature of existence. Step by step Strakhov comes to understanding the epic nature of Tolstoy's artistic worlds, which is understood not just as a calm and unhurried manner of narration, but as a revival of the scope of ancient epics in the new literature. Strakhov's subtle outline of the two foundations of Russian epic art showed a profound connection between the family theme in Russian literature and the idea of progress. By comparing the works of Tolstoy and Pushkin, Strakhov raised the figure of the former significantly above the momentary disputes, above his contemporary literature engulfed by nihilistic trends, defining the significance of the writer in the formation of truly people’s art.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the so-called 'Mathematical part' of Plato's Theaetetus. Its subject concerns the incommensurability of certain magnitudes, in modern terms the question of the rationality or irrationality of the square roots of integers. As the most ancient text on the subject, and on Greek mathematics and mathematicians as well, its historical importance is enormous. The difficulty to understand it lies in the close intertwining of different fields we found in it: philosophy, history and mathematics. But conversely, correctly understood, it gives some evidences both about the question of the origins of the irrationals in Greek mathematics and some points concerning Plato's thought. Taking into account the historical context and the philosophical background generally forgotten in mathematical analyses, we get a new interpretation of this text, which far from being a tribute to some mathematicians, is a radical criticism of their ways of thinking. And the mathematical lesson, far from being a tribute to some future mathematical achievements, is ending on an aporia, in accordance with the whole dialogue.

Abstract:The author of the article raises the question of the genetic relationship of the Russian novel of the second half of the 19th century with the epic, notes that it is precisely on the scale of the epic worldview that the global goal was set for themselves by Russian writers, when arguing about the need for universal coverage and understanding of life, of the insight of Divine laws. The article proves that one of the features of the epic novel included the turn to the popular worldview, but at the same time Russian writers were able to create an artistic world in which the importance of the personality is not diminished. The epic novel “War and Peace” opened up the opportunity for many of Leo Tolstoy’s contemporaries to create an epic novel based on the material of new and recent Russian history and contemporary life. The author analyses the features present in “War and Peace” and Leo Tolstoy’s epic novels “Anna Karenina” and “Resurrection” — the ratio of the personal and the common, the special integrity and totality of the artistic world, the objectivity of the narrative, the wide scope of events, the precedent picture of the world, etc. All the deeds of the heroes in the epic novel are evaluated not only from the position of a specific time, but from the position of eternity, from the point of view of religious consciousness.

Abstract:The paper investigates the notions of number, extensive quantity, algebraic quantity, similarity, and probability as introduced in Wolff’s mathematical writings, and evaluates the coherence of these definitions with Wolff’s presentation of the mathematical method. Wolff’s original epistemology is based on the belief that the discussion on the foundation of mathematics and on the history of mathematical ideas is essential not only to pure mathematics but also to its application and teaching. Mathematics is integrated into a larger body of knowledge and subordinated to philosophy, which explains the impurity of definitions and proofs and why certain notions, such as that of similarity and probability, cannot be understood without reference to ontology and logic. Wolff’s investigation of probable propositions allowed for a unique demonstrative methodology applied to philosophical, mathematical, and historical knowledge, because he described probable reasoning as an insufficient knowledge of the requisites for the truth of the premises. This explains the importance assigned to the right order of concepts and the inferential role of definitions. The paper shows the internal coherence between Wolff’s choice of mathematical definitions and his overall epistemology, and underlines the heritage of Descartes, of Barrow’s edition of Euclid’s Elements and of Aristotle’s notion of contiguity rather than the influence exerted by Leibniz’s mathematics or by Newton’s fluxional conception of geometrical quantities.

Abstract:Mathematics cannot anymore be assimilated to a linguistic game, where formal proofs are strongly differentiated with conjectural thinking, without building any category of knowledge to understand the passage (Wittgenstein's gist). Nowadays, philosophy has to face with the growing, exponential ramified tree of speculative mathematical thinking. Our main (problematical) theses are: 1. In mathematics, there is no empirical automatism, and no separate, physical-like motricity. 2: The irreversible-synthetical must force to complexify the exegetical game of philosophy; numerical experiments in algebra and in number theory are a kind of letting blow up all possible problems; 4. The nature of mathematical questioning still remains in question.
