Abstract:As emerging green solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) have promising applications in many fields. However, its long reaction time and high price restrict its industrial application. The main reason for this is due to the generation of droplets during the synthesis reaction. Aiming at the process intensification of the 1-methylimidazole (MIM)-based ILs, this paper has studied the evolution behavior of the droplets during its synthesis according to droplet breakage theory. The results show that the droplet size distribution (DSD) and its number density are closely related to the reaction progress. By comparing the Kolmogoroff microscale and droplet size, the synthesis process can be divided into Reaction stage I, when the conversion of MIM is below 60%, and Reaction stage II, when the conversion of MIM is beyond 60%. High stirring speed and temperature increase have been put forward for each stage. The reaction time can be effectively reduced by 43.93%, which is instructive in improving the production efficiency of [BMIM]Br.

Abstract:Heterogeneous systems containing ionic liquids (ILs) with gases and solvents extend the acpplications of ILs in absorption, extraction and heterogeneous catalysis. In recent years, the surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ionic liquids have been widely studied, because they are important due to their remarkable effects on heterogeneous reactions and separation efficiency. In this article, the surface/interfacial tension, as well as the surface/interfacial structures of ILs and their mixtures with water and organic solvents are summarized. The research methods, objectives and results are introduced. The relationship between surface/interfacial tension and surface/interfacial structures is elucidated. Finally, the exiting problems and development prospects of the studies on surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ILs are discussed.

Abstract:Mixing two (or more) ionic liquids (IL) to form IL mixtures has become a new research hotspot for the design of ILs to achieve the desired properties. However, fundamental studies on interactions and mixing behaviors of the IL mixtures were reported less. In this work, the two ILs containing the same cation [EMIM]+ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium) were selected to prepare ILs mixtures. The mixing behavior of the two IL mixtures were investigated by experimental method and quantum chemical calculations. The main conclusions were shown as follows: (1) DMSO form stronger hydrogen bonds with EMIMTFSI than EMIMBF4. (2) With addition of EMIMBF4, the hydrogen bonding interactions in EMIMTFSI−EMIMBF4 system were weakened, while the coulombic interactions were strengthened. (3) With the dilution, the C2−H has the smallest changes. A possible reason is the C2−Hs were still the main interaction site. (4) New formation complexes between EMIMBF4 and EMIMTFSI were assigned by excess infrared spectra.
Densities and Viscosities of Binary Mixtures of 2-Ethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium Ionic Liquids with Ethanol and 1-Propanol

Abstract:Two guanidinium-based ionic liquids (ILs), 2-ethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([TMGEt] [NTf2]) and ethyl sulfate ([TMGEt][C2OSO3]) were synthesized and characterized. Experimental densities and viscosities for the binary mixtures of the ILs with ethanol and 1-propanol from (293.15 to 323.15) K were measured over the whole composition range and at the atmospheric pressure of 0.1 MPa. The excess molar volumes (V-m(E)) and the viscosity deviations (Delta eta) for the binary systems were calculated and fitted with the Redlich-Kister equation. It is found that the density of [TMGEt] [NTf2] is much higher than that of [TMGEt][C2OSO3] at the same temperature, while the viscosity of the former with the value of 74.61 mPa.s is only 1/9 of that of the latter at 293.15 K. This indicates that the difference of the anions has a significant influence on the density and viscosity of the ILs with the same guanidinium cation. The addition of ethanol or 1-propanol leads to negative values of V-m(E) and Delta eta which result from the efficient packing of the constituents in the binary mixtures and the weakening of anion-cation interactions of the ILs. The partial molar volumes, excess partial molar volumes, Gibbs energy, and excess Gibbs energy of activation for viscous flow of the binary mixtures also have been calculated. It is hoped that the results provide useful information for the fundamental physicochemical properties of the guanidinium-based ILs and their further applications.

Abstract:Mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) and molecular solvents can overcome the drawbacks (high viscosity, high polarity, and high cost) of pure ILs and extend their practical use. The structural and interaction properties of ILs form the bases for understanding their properties. In this work, the structural properties of the mixtures of an IL, 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2OHMIM][Tf2N]), with chloroform, a molecular solvent of weak polarity, in various concentrations were analysed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Excess spectra were used to analyse the infrared spectra. The IL forms a stable ion cluster-CDCl3 complex with CDCl3 in the concentration range investigated. In the ion cluster-CDCl3 complex, the hydrogen atom of CDCl3 forms hydrogen-bonds with the fluorine atoms of the anion. In addition, the chlorine atom of CDCl3 forms a halogen-bond with the oxygen atom of the anion. All the hydrogen and halogen-bonds identified between the [C2OHMIM][Tf2N] ion cluster and CDCl3 exhibit low strength, closed shells, and electrostatically dominant interactions.

Abstract:The study of ionic liquid mixtures has garnered growing attention due to its importance. However, our current understanding of molecular interactions in ionic liquid mixtures remains incomplete, necessitating further research to expand the foundational knowledge in this field. In this work, a comprehensive approach incorporating theoretical calculations and diverse experimental techniques was utilized to research the structures, dynamics, and interactions of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethansulfonate (BMIMTfO) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (BMIMTFSI) mixtures. The obtained conclusions are as follows: (1) The primary interaction sites for [BMIM](+), [TfO](-) and [TFSI](-) were identified as the C2H, O atoms of SO3 and O atoms of SO, respectively. (2) With the addition of BMIMTFSI, the hydrogen bonding interactions associated with imidazolium CH are weakened, while those associated with alkyl CH and SO are strengthened. Additionally, there is an increased propensity for aggregation between the two anions ([TfO](-), [TFSI](-)) and [BMIM](+). (3) The interactions between [BMIM](+) and [TfO](-) are stronger compared to those between [BMIM](+) and [TFSI](-), and the self-diffusion coefficient followed the order of [BMIM](+) > [TFSI](-) > [TfO](-). (4) The 2[BMIM](+)[TfO](-), 2[BMIM](+)[TFSI](-)-[TfO](-), 2[BMIM](+)[TFSI](-) and 2[BMIM](+)[TfO](-)-[TFSI](-) complexes were assigned using excess spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:The ionic liquid (IL), 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium ethyl sulfate ([(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3]), was synthesized and characterized. The density and viscosity data were determined for the binary mixtures of [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] with water, methanol, or ethanol over the whole concentration range at different temperatures T = 293.15–323.15 K and atmospheric pressure p = 0.1 MPa. The excess molar volume, V m E, and viscosity deviation, Δη, for the binary mixtures are calculated and fitted with the Redlich–Kister type polynomial equation. The values of V m E for [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] + water system are observed to be negative, and those for [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] + methanol/ethanol system change from negative to positive against the mole fraction (x 1) of the IL, which exhibit the minimum values around x 1 = 0.2 and the maximum values near x 1 = 0.8. The Δη values for all of the three binary systems are negative, and the minimum values occur near x 1 = 0.6. The temperature dependence of viscosity for pure [(C2)2 2(C1)2(C1)2 3gu][C2OSO3] and its binary mixtures can be well correlated with the Vogel–Fucher–Tammann equation. These fundamental physicochemical properties of the binary mixtures make for a better comprehension of the guanidinium-based ILs and the potential applications.

Abstract:Ionic liquid (IL) mixtures with specific properties can be designed by the combination of different ionic liquids (ILs), but there are few studies on the physicochemical properties of IL mixtures with different ratios. Thus, this work explores the association and thermal stability of binary imidazolium IL mixtures. In particular, the physicochemical properties of binary IL mixtures at different ratios were investigated. Four different ILs, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([BMIM][NO3]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([BMIM][TFO]), and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoroacetate ([BMIM][CF3COO]), were selected as the parent salts to form the different binary imidazolium IL mixtures. These IL mixtures were tested at different temperatures (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 °C) and ratios (1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, and 9:1) by viscometer, conductivity meter, and then by isothermal thermogravimetric analysis in the temperature rise range of 30–500 °C. It was found that the increase in temperature decreased the association of IL mixtures, thus destroying the association behavior between the parent salts. Accordingly, different ratios of the parent salts had no significant effect on the thermal stability of some IL mixtures. Moreover, the results showed that smaller anions were more likely to combine with cations to form ion clusters or ion pairs, enhancing the association of binary IL mixtures. Thus, it increased the thermal stability of IL mixtures.

Abstract:A recent focus in the ionic liquid field is to mix two (or more) ionic liquids to expand the available properties. In this work, the interactions and structural properties of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(tri fluoromethyl)sulfonylimide (EMIMTFSI) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIMDCA) mixtures were investigated by employing multiple experimental methods and DFT calculations. Microheterogeneity of the liquid mixtures was characterized in detail and four complexes or clusters were identified, i.e. 2EMIMTFSI, 2EMIMDCA, 2EMIMTFSI-[DCA] and 2EMIMDCA-[TFSI] . Hydrogen bonding interactions between cations and anions were found to be ubiquitous but all in the category of weak interactions. The main interaction sites for [EMIM](+), [TFSI] , and [DCA] were found to be C2-H, O/N atoms, and N (in CN). This work adds value to an in-depth understanding of the microstructures and molecular interactions in the specified ionic liquid mixtures and would shed light to the general understanding of the ionic liquid systems as a whole. A comprehensive understanding of their microstructural characteristics and properties is essential for harnessing the full potential of ionic liquid mixtures. In this work, the structural properties and interactions were investigated within mixtures of two specific ionic liquids: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C 4 C 1 im][NTf 2 ]) and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C 4 C 1 pyrr][NTf 2 ]). Employing a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, the following conclusions were obtained: (1) The cis - and trans -configurations of [NTf 2 ] − coexist in pure ionic liquids and their mixtures; (2) The primary interaction site of [C 4 C 1 im] + and [C 4 C 1 pyrr] + are C 2 − H and H on the methylene group attached to the N atom, respectively. It mainly interacts with O atoms in [NTf 2 ] − anions through hydrogen bond interactions; (3) The introduction of [C 4 C 1 pyrr][NTf 2 ] weakens the hydrogen bonding interactions within the ionic liquid mixtures.

Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry is defined as “chemistry beyond the molecule”, bearing on the organized entities of higher complexity that result from the association of two or more chemical species held together by intermolecular forces (Lehn, 1988, 1995). Supramolecular chemistry may be divided into two broad and partially overlapping areas concerning: (1) supermolecules, well-defined and discrete oligomolecular species that result from the intermolecular association of a few components (a receptor and its substrate(s)) following a built-in scheme based on the principles of molecular recognition; (2) supramolecular assemblies, polymolecular entities that result from the spontaneous association of a large undefined number of components into a specific phase having more or less well-defined microscopic organization and macroscopic characteristics depending on its nature (such as micelles, microemulsions, vesicles, films, layers, membranes, mesomorphic phase and so on) (Lehn, 1995). Investigation on supramolecular systems is receiving more and more attention (Beletskaya et al., 2009; Constable, 2008; Descalzo et al., 2006; He et al., 2008b; Metrangolo et al., 2008; Oshovsky et al., 2007). Different from simple inorganic salts (such as NaCl) who often melt at very high temperature, ionic liquids (ILs) are a kind of organic salts that are liquid at or near room temperature, always taking 100 oC as an upper limit. Figure 1 shows the structures of some typical cations and anions of ILs. The imidazolium, especially 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (Cnmim+), is one of the most popular cations. So far, ILs have attracted much attention and been widely used as an attractive class of green solvents in the filelds of chemical reactions, organic and material syntheses, solvent extraction, and electrochemistry because of their negligible vapor pressure, nonflammability, high thermal and chemical stability, high polarity, wide electrochemical window and tunable physicochemical properties (Chiappe & Pieraccini, 2005; Dupont, 2004; Leclercq & Schmitzer, 2009a; Weingartner, 2008; Welton, 1999; Zhao et al., 2002). In the field of supramolecular chemistry, ILs could either participate directly in the assembly of supramolecular organizations, or influence the assembly of various supramolecular structures in a certain way, leading to the appearance of many novel and interesting phenomena. Abstract:The mixtures of ionic liquid (IL) and acetonitrile (CH3CN) can be used as reaction media, supercapacitors and thermally stable electrolytes. The macroscopic properties of ILs-CH3CN mixtures have been extensively studied. However, some fundamental questions regarding the microscopic properties of ILs-CH3CN mixtures still remain to be answered. In this work, the structure properties and hydrogen-bond interactions of two task-specific ILs, i.e., 1-propylnitrile-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([PCNMIM][Tf2N]) and 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2OHMIM][Tf2N]), and CH3CN were studied using the combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The aromatic C‒H stretching vibration region of the cation was an area of special focus. Excess infrared spectroscopy with enhanced resolution was applied to analyse the original infrared spectra. It is found that: (1) The two ILs form stable hydrogen-bonds with CH3CN. (2) Ion cluster, ion cluster-acetonitrile, and ion pair-acetonitrile are identified in the mixture. Acetonitrile cannot break apart the strong electronic interaction between the cation and anion in the examined concentration range. (3) The hydrogen-bonds are weak strength, closed shell and electrostatic dominant interactions. (4) The preferred interaction site of [PCNMIM]+ cation is the hydrogen atom at the C2 site, while that of [C2OHMIM]+ cation is the hydrogen atom in the hydroxyl group.

Abstract:One of the key challenges in the industrial application of ionic liquids (ILs) is their extreme characteristics, such as viscosity, glass transition temperatures, and conductivity. Understanding the relationship between ILs structure and physicochemical property is a crucial aspect of the directed design of ILs with good properties, which is a prerequisite for their successful implementation in industrial processes. In this work, high-level quantum-chemical research with for four pairs ionic liquids, [Emim][X] and [Emim][BF 3 X] (X = CH 3 SO 3 , EtSO 4 , HSO 4 , Tos), was performed, to analyze the stable structure, interionic interaction, and charge transfer and provide a new insight into the property variances at the molecular level. The result shows that the overall structural stability of ionic liquids is contributed with hydrogen bonding network between the protons in the C–H and N–H of the cation and oxygen atoms of the anion, as well as fluorine atoms. The nature and strength of the interionic interaction were measured via atoms in molecule analysis and sobEDAw method and results suggested that BF 3 could waning interionic interaction of ion pairs. Moreover, a close relation between the binding energies of ion pairs and physicochemical properties was established: the weaker the interionic interaction, the lower is the viscosity and glass transition, and the higher is the conductivity.

Abstract:The guanidinium-based ionic liquid (IL), 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl) imide ([TMG(C-2)(2)][NTf2]), was synthesized. Densities and viscosities of the IL and its mixtures with methanol or ethanol were reported at temperatures from 293.15 K to 323.15 K. The increment of IL concentration or the decrement of temperature significantly increases both density and viscosity. Excess molar volume (V-m(E)) and viscosity deviation (Delta eta) of each binary mixture were calculated, and the Redlich-Kister equation was used to fit V-m(E) and Delta eta with composition. When V-m(E) is negative with the mole fraction of IL (x(1)) lower than 0.8 for two systems, Delta eta is negative over the whole concentration range. The positive V-m(E) of the mixture at a high IL concentration indicates that interaction loss occurs. Moreover, structures of the equimolar mixture of IL and alcohol were obtained by DFT calculations, and alcohol-anion, alcohol-cation and cation-anion interactions were revealed. Strong H-bond interaction with the span of 1.61 angstrom is formed between the H atom of the -OH group in alcohol and the O atom in the [NTf2] anion, while the O atom of the -OH group in alcohol interacts with the methyl groups in the [TMG(C-2)(2)](+) cation. Significant cation-anion interactions (<2.40 angstrom) in the manners of H center dot center dot center dot F and H center dot center dot center dot O with spans less than 2.40 angstrom are found at the same time. It is the enhanced H-bond interactions that contribute to the negative V-m(E) of the equimolar mixture at non-concentrated regions. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of salts existing in the liquid state below 100 C, possessing low volatility, high thermal stability as well as many highly attractive solvent and electrochemical capabilities, etc., making them highly tunable for a great variety of applications, such as lubricants, electrolytes, and soft functional materials. In many applications, ILs are first either physi- or chemisorbed on a solid surface to successively create more functional materials. The functions of ILs at solid surfaces can differ considerably from those of bulk ILs, mainly due to distinct interfacial layers with tunable structures resulting in new ionic liquid interface layer (ILIL) properties and enhanced performance. Due to an almost infinite number of possible combinations among the cations and anions to form ILs, the diversity of various solid surfaces, as well as different external conditions and stimuli, a detailed molecular-level understanding of their structure–property relationship is of utmost significance for a judicious design of IL–solid interfaces with appropriate properties for task-specific applications. Many experimental techniques, such as atomic force microscopy, surface force apparatus, and so on, have been used for studying the ion structuring of ILIL. Molecular Dynamics simulations have been widely used to investigate the microscopic behavior of the ILIL. To interpret and clarify the IL structure and dynamics as well as to predict their properties, it is always beneficial to combine both experiments and simulations as close as possible. In another theoretical model development to bridge the structure and properties of ILIL with performance, thermodynamic (TD) prediction & property modeling has been demonstrated as an effective tool to add the properties and function of the studied nanomaterials. Herein, we present recent findings from applying the multiscale triangle "experiment–molecular simulation–TD modeling" in the studies of ion structuring of ILs in the vicinity of solid surfaces, as well as how it qualitatively and quantitatively correlates to the overall ILs properties, performance, and function. We introduce the most common techniques behind "experiment–molecular simulation–modeling" and how they are applied for studying the ILIL structuring, and we highlight the possibilities of the ILIL structuring in applications such as lubrication and energy storage.

Abstract:Ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) combine the ion mobility of ionic liquids with the order and self-assembly of thermotropic mesophases. To understand the role of the anion in ILCs, wedge-shaped arylguanidinium salts with tetradecyloxy side chains were chosen as benchmark systems and their liquid crystalline self-assembly in the bulk phase as well as their electrochemical behavior in solution were studied depending on the anion. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (WAXS, SAXS) experiments revealed that for spherical anions, the phase width of the hexagonal columnar mesophase increased with the anion size, while for non-spherical anions, the trends were less clear cut. Depending on the anion, the ILCs showed different stability towards electrochemical oxidation and reduction with the most stable being the PF 6 based compound. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest a possible contribution of the guanidinium cation to the oxidation processes.

Abstract:Ionic liquids are a special category of molten salts with melting points near ambient temperatures or by convention below 100 C. Owing to their numerous valuable physicochemical properties as bulk liquids, solvents, at surfaces and in confined environments, ILs have attracted increasing attention in both academic and industrial communities in a variety of application areas involving physics, chemistry, material science and engineering. Due to their nearly limitless number of combinations of cation and anion pairs and mixtures with cosolvents, a molecular level understanding of their hierarchical structures and dynamics, requiring strategies to connect several length and time scales, is of crucial significance for rational design of ILs with desired properties, and thereafter refining their functional performance in applications. As an invaluable compliment to experiments from synthesis to characterization, computational modelling and simulations have significantly increased our understanding on how physicochemical and structural properties of ILs can be controlled by their underlying chemical and molecular structures. In this chapter, we will give examples from our own modelling work based on selected IL systems, with focus on imidazolium based and tetraalkylphosphonium orthoborate ILs, studied at several spatiotemporal scales in different environments and with particular attention to applications of high technological interest.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of anion size, solvent content, and temperature on their physical properties, in this work, densities and viscosities of three binary mixtures, including ionic liquids (ILs) composed of the cation 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium (i.e., [C6mim]+) and the halide anions (i.e., Cl–, Br–, and I–), along with methanol (MeOH), were measured across the entire concentration range at temperatures from 288.15 to 323.15 K, and enthalpies of mixing were determined at temperatures of 298.15 and 308.15 K. Excess volumes and viscosity deviations were calculated to study the nonideal behavior of the mixtures. The results of excess volumes suggest that a combination of intermolecular interactions and packing effects contributes to their nonideal behaviors, with packing effects likely dominating the negative excess volume. Viscosity deviations and enthalpies of mixing indicate that MeOH molecules intend to coordinate with IL ions (IL cations and IL anions) in the IL-rich region, with stronger interactions observed between [C6mim]Cl and MeOH compared to ([C6mim]Br + MeOH) and ([C6mim]I + MeOH) mixtures. Additionally, the nonrandom two-liquid model and the Gibbs–Helmholtz equation were combined to describe the enthalpies of mixing for the studied mixtures reliably.

Abstract:Chloride anion-based ionic liquids (ILs) have unique importance among various ILs. Nevertheless, they are usually very viscous, and the study on their mixtures with molecular solvent is important for their practical application. In this work, the viscosities and conductivities of the binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and several protic/aprotic solvents were measured, and the underlying information about intermolecular interaction and microscopic structure was discussed. The result showed that the molecular solvents which have relatively high dielectric constant and hydrogen-bond acidity will be more efficient in promoting the dissociation of chloride anion-based ILs and improving the transport properties of corresponding applications.
