Abstract:Abstract Representing complex flows by evolving vortex structures is an important principle in many investigations of wall-bounded turbulence. The practice of this principle benefits from the bi-directional transformation between the velocity field and the corresponding vortex field. While the velocity-to-vortex transformation could be implemented by various vortex identification criteria, few efforts have been devoted to the inverse process. This work develops a linear reconstruction method, which allows an effective reconstruction for the velocity field of wall turbulence based on a given vortex field. The vortex field is defined as a vector field by combining the swirl strength and the real eigenvector of the velocity gradient tensor. The reconstructed velocity fields are calculated by convolution operations on the vortex fields, with the kernel functions derived by the field-based linear stochastic estimation. The method can effectively recover the turbulent motions in a large scale range, showing clear advantages over the Biot–Savart formula in the near-wall region. The method is also employed to investigate the inducing effects of vortices at different heights. The wall-bounding effect on the induced motions is observed from the contribution spectra of vortices. The higher-order moments of the reconstructed streamwise velocity component present larger deviations from the original data, which is discussed and explained reasonably. At last, the vortex fields filtered by prescribed thresholds are employed to reconstruct the velocity fields. It is found that the strongest vortex components occupying 5 % of the total volume can reasonably recover the main flow features including both the near-wall streaks and the large-scale motions.
Velocity Transformation for Compressible Wall-Bounded Turbulence—an Approach Through the Mixing Length Hypothesis

Abstract:In an endeavor to establish a connection between the mean velocity profile in compressible wall-bounded turbulence and its incompressible analogue, a refined version of the Trettel and Larsson’s (TL) transformation is systematically derived and rigorously assessed across diverse flow scenarios. Incorporating the recently proposed intrinsic compressibility effects and modeling the multi-layer structure of mixing lengths, the proposed transformation demonstrates exceptional performance in collapsing 57 canonical flow cases, including cooled channel and pipe flows, channel flows with pseudo heat sources, as well as adiabatic and diabatic boundary layer flows. Furthermore, the transformation seamlessly extends to low Reynolds number cooled channel and pipe flows, achieving a level of accuracy unparalleled by other transformations in the current state-of-the-art.
Experimental Study on Dominant Vortex Structures in Near-Wall Region of Turbulent Boundary Layer Based on Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry

Abstract:Vortex structures are very popular research objects in turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) because of their prime importance in turbulence modelling. This work performs a tomographic particle image velocimetry measurement on the near-wall region ($y<0.1\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$) of TBLs at three Reynolds numbers $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=1238$, 2286 and 3081. The main attention is paid to the wall-normal evolution of the vortex geometries and topologies. The vortex is identified with swirl strength ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{ci}$), and its orientation is recognized by using the real eigenvector of the velocity gradient tensor. The vortex inclination angles in the streamwise–wall-normal plane and in the streamwise–spanwise plane as functions of wall-normal positions are investigated, which provide useful information to speculate on the three-dimensional shape of the vortex tubes in a TBL. The difference between the orientations of vorticity and swirl is discussed and their inherent relationship is revealed based on the governing equation of vorticity. Linear stochastic estimation (LSE) is further deployed to directly extract three-dimensional vortex models. The LSE velocity fields for ejection events happening at different wall-normal positions shed light on the evolution of the topologies for the vortices dominating ejection events. LSE based on a centred prograde spanwise vortex provides a typical packet model, which indicates that the population density of the packets in a TBL is large enough to leave footprints in conditionally averaged flow fields. This work should help to settle the severe debate on the existence of packet structures and also lays some foundation for the TBL model theory.
Recovering Turbulence Details using Velocity Correction for SPH Fluids

Abstract:In general, kinetic energy of water molecules at translational rotational degree of freedoms (DOFs) occupies the dominant position. However, coarse space discretization always results in severe numerical dissipation if only the linear kinetic energy is considered. Therefore, we proposed a novel turbulence refinement method using velocity correction for SPH simulation. In this method, surface details were enhanced by recovering the energy lost in DOFs for SPH particles. We used a free vortex model to convert particles’ diffused and stretched angular kinetic energy to its neighbours’ linear kinetic energy. Turbulence details would be efficiently generated using the shear between slices. Compared with previous methods, our method can generate turbulence and vortex more vividly and stably.

Abstract:A major issue in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) approaches is the numerical dissipation during the projection process, especially under coarse discretizations. High-frequency details, such as turbulence and vortices, are smoothed out, leading to unrealistic results. To address this issue, we introduce a Vorticity Refinement (VR) solver for SPH fluids with negligible computational overhead. In this method, the numerical dissipation of the vorticity field is recovered by the difference between the theoretical and the actual vorticity, so as to enhance turbulence details. Instead of solving the Biot-Savart integrals, a stream function, which is easier and more efficient to solve, is used to relate the vorticity field to the velocity field. We obtain turbulence effects of different intensity levels by changing an adjustable parameter. Since the vorticity field is enhanced according to the curl field, our method can not only amplify existing vortices, but also capture additional turbulence. Our VR solver is straightforward to implement and can be easily integrated into existing SPH methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel method to restore turbulence details for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) using the viscosity based vorticity field as a cooperative project of numerical simulation and computer visualization. One of the major issues that hinder the accuracy of the fluid simulation is the numerical dissipation, which comes along with the discretization of space and time. Therefore unrealistic results are unavoidable. To recover kinetic energy from the numerical dissipation, we propose a vorticity refinement solver for SPH fluids without extra restriction to the time step. In our method, the vorticity field of the fluid is enhanced proportional to the loss of energy due to the viscosity force. This means our method not only can increase existing vortices but also creating additional turbulence. Compared with Biot-Savart integrals, our method is more efficient by applying stream function to recover the velocity field from the vorticity field.

Abstract:Volumetric measurement for the leading-edge vortex (LEV) breakdown of a delta wing has been conducted by three-dimensional (3D) flow visualization and tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV). The 3D flow visualization is employed to show the vortex structures, which was recorded by four cameras with high resolution. 3D dye streaklines of the visualization are reconstructed using a similar way of particle reconstruction in TPIV. Tomographic PIV is carried out at the same time using same cameras with the dye visualization. Q criterion is employed to identify the LEV. Results of tomographic PIV agree well with the reconstructed 3D dye streaklines, which proves the validity of the measurements. The time-averaged flow field based on TPIV is shown and described by sections of velocity and streamwise vorticity. Combining the two measurement methods sheds light on the complex structures of both bubble type and spiral type of breakdown. The breakdown position is recognized by investigating both the streaklines and TPIV velocity fields. Proper orthogonal decomposition is applied to extract a pair of conjugated helical instability modes from TPIV data. Therefore, the dominant frequency of the instability modes is obtained from the corresponding POD coefficients of the modes based on wavelet transform analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a high-quality texture-based approach for the visualization of vector fields on surface. It adopts a scheme of streamline enhancement by applying a ID high-pass filter to flow textures along the orthogonal flow direction to enhance the intensity contrast among streamlines and improve the image quality of flow textures. The scheme of edge detection and supplement is used in our approach to modulate the characteristic of particles flow. Our algorithm is image space based and can achieve a real-time rendering performance on a personal computer by using parallel processing ability of current graphics hardware.

Abstract:We propose a novel turbulence refinement method based on the Rankine vortex model for smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. Surface details are enhanced by recovering the energy lost due to the lack of the rotation of SPH particles. The Rankine vortex model is used to convert the diffused and stretched angular kinetic energy of particles to the linear kinetic energy of their neighbors. In previous vorticity-based refinement methods, adding more energy than required by the viscous damping effect leads to instability. In contrast, our model naturally prevents the positive feedback effect between the velocity and vorticity fields since the vortex model is designed to alter the velocity without introducing external sources. Experimental results show that our method can recover missing high-frequency details realistically and maintain convergence in both static and highly dynamic scenarios.
High-Precision Numerical Scheme for Vortical Flow

Abstract:In this study, a new high-precision numerical simulation scheme for vortical flows (vortex-based scheme) is proposed. This scheme identifies a vortical flow in each computational cell, and then, reconstructs a vortical velocity distribution based on the Burgers vortex model. In addition, a pressure distribution in the vicinity of the vortex center is also reconstructed. The momentum transfer is calculated with the reconstructed velocity and pressure distributions, and therefore, the vortex-based scheme can simulate vortical flows more accurately than the conventional schemes. In fact, as the simulation result of inviscid vortex attenuation problem, the vortex-based scheme shows lower simulation error compared to the conventional discretization schemes. Moreover, also in the numerical simulation of the quasi-steady vortical flow, the simulation accuracy of the vortex-based scheme is superior to those of the conventional schemes.
The three-dimensional vortical structure in time-developing mixing layer with cross shear

Abstract:A new method used to describe three-dimensional mixing layers with discrete vortex filaments is studied. Based on this method, the three-dimensional mixing layers are computed numerically. The vortical structure, distribution of mean velocity and momentum loss thickness in different time are given. The effects of shear rate and intensity of disturbance on flows are analysed. Some computed results are compared with experimental ones, they show a good agreement. The results given in the paper are helpful to understand such flows.

Abstract:The generation and evolution of turbulence are affected by the way vortex structures emerge and interact with each other. The quick identification of vortex in flow field will offer a simple and easy way to explore the mechanism of turbulent flow. This paper combines convolutional neural network (CNN) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) into a novel vortex structure identification method, based on the flow field images obtained by simulation of the flow around circular cylinder and experiments of synthetic jet actuators. DMD was adopted to modally decompose the instantaneous image sequence of the flow field over a period and the first primary mode was added to the limit loss function of CNN vortex identification. Then a novel CNN topology was designed and trained by flow field image sequence. The proposed neural network managed to recognize 96% of the vortex structures correctly in the flow field images of the flow around circular cylinder and the synthetic jet flow. The research results provide a new way to identify vortex structures.

Abstract:In order to provide references for the study of jets from combustor and associated industrial applications, direct numerical simulation was employed to study a three-dimensional temporally evolving plane mixing layer laden with particles in the upper region initially. The coherent structures in the mixing layer between two parallel streams were simulated using a pseudo-spectral method. Particles with different Stokes numbers were traced using the Lagrangian approach based on one-way coupling between the continuous and the dispersed phases. Both the large-scale vortex structures and the particle dispersion patterns with different Stokes numbers were investigated. The results clearly showed that particle dispersion is closely related to the large-scale organized structures and the three-dimensionality. Particles with Stokes number of the order of unity were found to have the largest concentration on the outer edges of the large-scale vortex structures, and the variation of particle concentration along the spanwise direction increased with the development of the three-dimensionality, which was mainly due to the presence of the streamwise large-scale structures. When the counter-rotating "rib" large-scale vortices paired, part of the particles were thrown out from the high concentration area in the upper region to the lower region of the mixing layer and finally developed into a "mushroom" pattern of the particle distribution along the spanwise direction.

Abstract:A vortex is intuitively recognized as the rotational/swirling motion of the fluids. However, an unambiguous and universally-accepted definition for vortex is yet to be achieved in the field of fluid mechanics, which is probably one of the major obstacles causing considerable confusions and misunderstandings in turbulence research. In our previous work, a new vector quantity which is called vortex vector was proposed to accurately describe the local fluid rotation and clearly display vortical structures. In this paper, the definition of the vortex vector, named Rortex here, is revisited from the mathematical perspective. The existence of the rotational axis is proved through real Schur decomposition. Based on real Schur decomposition, a fast algorithm for calculating Rortex is also presented. In addition, new vorticity tensor and vector decompositions are introduced: the vorticity tensor is decomposed to a rigidly rotational part and an anti-symmetric deformation part, and the vorticity vector is decomposed to a rigidly rotational vector and a non-rotational vector. Several cases, including 2D Couette flow, 2D rigid rotational flow and 3D boundary layer transition on a flat plate, are studied to demonstrate the justification of the definition of Rortex. It can be observed that Rortex identifies both the precise swirling strength and the rotational axis, and thus it can reasonably represent the local fluid rotation and provide a new powerful tool for vortex dynamics and turbulence research.

Abstract:A critical problem of Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) methods is the numerical dissipation in viscosity computation. This leads to unrealistic results where high frequency details, like turbulence, are smoothed out. To address this issue, we introduce a viscosity-based vorticity correction scheme for SPH fluids, without complex time integration or limited time steps. In our method, the energy difference in viscosity computation is used to correct the vorticity field. Instead of solving Biot-Savart integrals, we adopt stream function, which is easier to solve and more efficient, to recover the velocity field from the vorticity difference. Our method can increase the existing vortex significantly and generate additional turbulence at potential position. Moreover, it is simple to implement and can be easily integrated with other SPH methods.
Direct Numerical Simulation and Visualization of Biswirling Jets

Abstract:Two parallel swirling/rotating jets with a distance between them are termed biswirling jets here, which have important and complicated vortex structures different from the single swirling jet due to the negligible vortex-vortex interactions. The visualization of vortex-vortex interaction between the biswirling jets is accomplished by using direct numerical simulation. The evolution of vortex structures of the biswirling jets is found rather complicated. The turbulent kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation in the central convergence region are augmented locally and rather strongly. The modulation of turbulent kinetic energy by jet-jet interaction upon different scales of vortices is dominated by the swirling levels and the distance between the jets. The turbulent kinetic energy upon intermediate and small scale vortices in bijets with not very high swirling level and at a very close distance is smaller than that in single swirling jets, whereas the opposite is true under a far distance, and so forth.

Abstract:We present a novel vortex identification method based on structured vorticity (ωs) of the direction field of flow (velocity vectors set to unit magnitude). As a direct measure of streamline curvature is insensitive to vortex strength, ωs is effective in detecting vortices of various strengths. The effectiveness has been tested against both analytical flows (pure shear flow, Oseen vortex flow, strong outward spiraling motion, straining flow, Taylor–Green flow) and experimental flows (closed cavity flow, closed and open channel flow). Comparison of the new method with the swirling-strength method indicates that the new method shows promise as being a simple and effective criterion for vortex identification.

Abstract:Vortices and their analysis play a critical role in the understanding of complex phenomena in turbulent flows. Traditional vortex extraction methods, notably region-based techniques, often overlook the entanglement phenomenon, resulting in the inclusion of multiple vortices within a single extracted region. Their separation is necessary for quantifying different types of vortices and their statistics. In this study, we propose a novel vortex separation method that extends the conventional contour tree-based segmentation approach with an additional step termed "layering". Upon extracting a vortical region using specified vortex criteria (e.g., $\lambda_2$), we initially establish topological segmentation based on the contour tree, followed by the layering process to allocate appropriate segmentation IDs to unsegmented cells, thus separating individual vortices within the region. However, these regions may still suffer from inaccurate splits, which we address statistically by leveraging the continuity of vorticity lines across the split boundaries. Our findings demonstrate a significant improvement in both the separation of vortices and the mitigation of inaccurate splits compared to prior methods.

Abstract:Visualizing flow fields in stirred reactors under turbulent conditions remains a long-standing challenge. Inspired by bartenders creating patterns while mixing cocktails, we introduced pearlescent powder to achieve flow field visualization. We captured images of wall flow structures in various reactors and extracted their fractal dimensions. In comparison to the mixing time, this method effectively reflects the degree of chaos and the variability of mixing performance. Additionally, the fractal dimension shows sensitivity greater than that of traditional chaos metrics. By integrating proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) techniques, we clarified the interactions between vortices of different scales within the reactors, confirmed by Hilbert-Huang spectrum analysis. These analyses revealed the underlying mechanisms for reduced mixing performance in triple-shaft stirred reactors, validated through large-eddy simulation (LES) results. Furthermore, this work provides a novel method for rapidly validating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models through direct observation of wall flow structures.

Abstract:A direct numerical simulation study of the characteristics of macroscopic and microscopic rotating motions in swirling jets confined in a rectangular flow domain is carried out. The different structures of vortex cores for different swirl levels are illustrated. It is found that the vortex cores of low swirl flows are of regular cylindrical-helix patterns, whereas those of the high swirl flows are characterized by the formation of the bubble-type vortex breakdown followed by the radiant processing vortex cores. The results of mean velocity fields show the general procedures of vortex origination. Moreover, the effects of macroscopic and microscopic rotating motions with respect to the mean and fluctuation fields of the swirling flows are evaluated. The microscopic rotating effects, especially the effects with respect to the turbulent fluctuation motion, are increasingly intermittent with the increase in the swirl levels. In contrast, the maximum value of the probability density functions with respect to the macroscopic rotating effects of the fluctuation motion occurs at moderate swirl levels since the macroscopic rotating effects are attenuated by the formation of the bubble vortex breakdown with a region of stagnant fluids at supercritical swirl levels.
