Abstract:The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is a major crop pest throughout the world. Extensive research on biological control of the whitefly using parasitoids as agents has been conducted worldwide. In this paper the population dynamics of the whitefly on different host plants and parasitoids parasitizing on whitefly were investigated in Ningbo during the period from June 2007 to November 2008. Seven species of parasitoids were found in Ningbo: Encarsia sophia, En. japonica, En. formosa, En. smithi, Eretmocerus mundus, Er. debachi and Er. melanoscutus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), of which En. sophia, Er. mundus and Er. debachi were the most abundant parasitoids, accounting for 35.89%, 49.66% and 11.01%, respectively, of the total numbers. The whitefly population reached its peak in December 2007 on cruciferous vegetables, November 2007 on cucumber, and July and September 2007 and October 2008 on eggplant in the field. Parasitism rate of whitefly by parasitoids reached its peak in October 2008 on cruciferous vegetables (13.86%), August 2007 on cucumber (8.22%), and July 2007, September 2007 and September 2008 on eggplant (13.25%, 10.30% and 5.92%, respectively) in the field.
