Abstract:The integration of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) into modern electronics has affirmed their role in next-generation display technologies, presenting advantages in energy efficiency, flexibility, large-area fabrication, and low-cost solution processability. Maintaining high luminance and color purity in OLEDs is an important goal, particularly for high-efficiency devices utilizing triplet excitons. Here, we report solution-processed dual-dopant polymer LEDs, in which highly efficient electroluminescence occurs via an intermolecular energy transfer from carbenemetal-amides (CMAs) (which exhibit rapid singlet-triplet interconversion) to a fluorescent rubrene derivative. This design enables solution-processed OLEDs with external quantum efficiencies of >20% (corresponding to near 100% internal quantum efficiencies) and a peak luminance of 75,000 cd m(-2). We show that the emission originates from the singlet state of the rubrene derivative. Ultrafast optical measurements indicate that the inter-fluorophore energy transfer occurs within 0.3 ps, at an efficiency of >96%. Such devices preserve the relatively narrow emission bandwidth of conventional fluorophores for color purity, showing potential in energy-efficient printable electronics.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have emerged as cheaper alternatives to high-performance phosphorescent OLEDs with noble-metal-based dopants. However, the efficiencies of blue TADF OLEDs are still low at high luminance, limiting full-colour display. Here, we report a blue OLED containing a 9,10-dihydroacridine/diphenylsulphone derivative that has a comparable performance to today's best phosphorescent OLEDs. The device offers an external quantum efficiency of 19.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off characteristics at high luminance. Through computational simulation, we identified six pretwisted intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) molecules with small singlet–triplet CT state splitting but different energy relationships between 3 CT and locally excited triplet ( 3 LE) states. Systematic comparison of their excited-state dynamics revealed that CT molecules with a large twist angle can emit efficient and short-lifetime (a few microseconds) TADF when the emission peak energy is high enough and the 3 LE state is higher than the 3 CT state.

Abstract:Sensitizing conventional fluorescent molecules is an effective way to improve the efficiency of fluorescent-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. The relatively long triplet exciton lifetime of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters can cause serious efficiency roll-off. In this work, we use an efficient TADF emitter 2,7-TXO-PhCz to sensitize a conventional fluorescence emitter tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene (DBP). The energy transfer efficiency from the singlet excited state of the TADF sensitizer to the singlet excited state of the fluorescence guest can reach up to 90%. Profiting from the efficient energy transfer process, the reverse intersystem crossing can be accelerated and the delayed lifetime of the TADF sensitizer can be reduced. The TADF-sensitized fluorescent OLEDs can achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 15.9% with reduced efficiency roll-off. Besides, the sensitization efficiency can achieve 77%, which indicates almost pure fluorescent emission. Abstract:Numerous efforts have been devoted to boost the efficiency of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) devices; however, strategies to suppress the device efficiency roll-off are still in urgent need. Here, a general and effective approach to suppress the efficiency roll-off of TADF devices is proposed, that is, utilizing TADF materials as the hosts for TADF emitters. Bearing small singlet-triplet splitting (ΔE) with donor and acceptor units, TADF materials as the hosts possess the potential to achieve matched frontier energy levels with the adjacent transporting layers, facilitating balanced charge injection as well as bipolar charge transport mobilities beneficial to the balanced charges transportation. Furthermore, an enhanced Förster energy transfer from the host to the dopant can be anticipated, helpful to reduce the exciton concentration. Based on the principles, a new TADF material based on indeno[2,1-b]carbazole/1,3,5-triazin derivation is synthesized and used as the universal host for the full-color TADF devices. Remarkable low efficiency roll-off was achieved with above 90% of the maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQE's) maintained even at a brightness of 2000 cd/m, along with EQE's of 23.2, 21.0, and 19.2% for orange, green, and sky-blue TADF devices, respectively. Through computational simulation, we identified the suppressed exciton annihilation rates compared with devices adopting conventional hosts. The state-of-the-art low efficiency roll-off of those TADF devices manifests the great potential of such host design strategy, paving an efficient strategy toward their practical application.
High Fluorescence Rate of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters for Efficient and Stable Blue OLEDs

Abstract:A lack of an efficient and stable blue device is a critical factor restricting the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, which is currently expected to be overcome by employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Here, we investigate the TADF and electroluminescence (EL) performance of six carbazole/triphenyltriazine derivatives in different hosts. A good linearity between lg(LT50/kF2) and the EL emission wavelength is found, where LT50 is the half-life of the devices and kF is the fluorescence rate of the emitters, suggesting the dominance of the singlet exciton energy and lifetime in the device stability. An indolylcarbazole/triphenyltriazine derivative (ICz-TRZ) with the capability to suppress solid-state solvation exhibits blueshifted emission and an increased kF (1.5×108 s-1) in comparison to the control emitters in doped films. ICz-TRZ-based devices realize a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18% and an EQE of 5.5% at a very high luminance of 7×104 cd/m2. Ignoring the poor electrochemical stability of ICz-TRZ, the device offers an LT50 approaching 100 hr under an initial luminance of 1000 cd/m2 and CIE coordinates of (0.14, 0.19). The findings in this work suggested that computer-aided design of high kF TADF emitters can be an approach to realizing efficient and stable blue OLEDs.
Peripheral Amplification of Multi-Resonance Induced Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence for Highly Efficient OLEDs

Abstract:Multi-resonance induced by boron and nitrogen atoms in opposite resonance positions endows a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitter with a strikingly small full width at half maximum of only 26 nm and excellent photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 97.48 %. The introduction of a carbazole unit in the para position of the B-substituted phenyl-ring can significantly boost up the resonance effect without compromising the color fidelity, subsequently enhancing the performances of the corresponding pure blue TADF-OLED, with an outstanding external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 32.1 % and low efficiency roll-off, making it one of the best TADF-OLEDs in the blue region to date. Furthermore, utilizing this material as host for a yellow phosphorescent emitter, the device also shows a significantly reduced turn-on voltage of 3.2 V and an EQEmax of 22.2 %.
High Performance Non-Doped Blue-Hazard-free Hybrid White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Stable High Color Rendering Index and Low Efficiency Roll-off

Abstract:White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), for display and lighting applications, combine features such as high performance, high color quality, low efficiency roll-off and blue-hazard-free are extremely important. In this study, we manufactured a highly efficient bluish-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) OLED. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), power efficiency (PE), and current efficiency (CE) were 16.0%, 46.2 lm/W, and 45.9 cd/A, respectively. Next, a non-doped and blue-hazard-free hybrid WOLED was prepared by employing reasonably inserting several red and yellow ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between the bluish-green TADF emitters. The device showed a maximum EQE of 18.7% and a low EQE roll-off of 7%. At 1000 cd/m(2), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 87 and a low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2759 were obtained. The result showed that bluish-green TADF material has potential applications in healthy WOLEDs without blue-hazard. Also, the strategy of inserting several long-wavelength ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between bluish-green TADF emitters with bipolar transport characteristic, which can reduce efficiency roll-off and enhance device electroluminescence efficiency, was demonstrated.

Abstract:In this work, we report the design and optimization of yellow organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with tris [2-(p-tolyl)pyridine]iridium (III) (Ir (mppy)3) doped 4,4′,4′-tris(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine (TCTA) and bis(2-phenylquinoline) (2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate)iridium (III) (PQ2Ir (dpm)) doped 2,6-bis(3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)phyridine (26DCzPPy) films as green and red light-emitting layers (EMLs). Experimental results demonstrated that the designed double EMLs system is beneficial in carriers' distribution, exciton confinement and reducing triplet exciton quenching because of the matched energy levels and triplet energies of hosts and dopants. Finally, the optimal device showed a very maximal current efficiency of 65.51 cd/A, slow roll-off of efficiency with a very high current efficiency of 63.54 cd/A at 5000 cd/m2, and excellent yellow emission with CIE coordinates of (0.468, 0.493) at 10 mA/cm2.

Abstract:The efficiency roll-off at high luminance has hindered the wide application of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for decades. To circumvent this issue, both high exciton utilization and short exciton residence should be satisfied, which, however, faces formidable challenges. Here, we propose an advanced approach of phosphor-assisted thermally activated delayed fluorophor (TADF)–sensitized fluorescence, abbreviated as TPSF. It is proved to be a rational strategy that can realize high quantum efficiency and elaborately accelerated radiative exciton consumption simultaneously by breaking singlet-triplet spin-flip cycles on a TADF host via multiple sensitizations. On the basis of a TADF molecule exhibiting anti–accumulation-caused quenching character, a proof-of-concept device exhibits a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE max ) of 24.2% with an ultrahigh L 90% (the luminance at which EQE drops to 90% of its maximum value) of 190,500 cd m −2 and a greatly improved operational stability, unlocking the full potential of OLEDs for ultrahigh-luminance applications.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted public attention due to their high external quantum efficiency (EQE) and implication in future display technology. Despite their improved efficiency, TADF-based OLEDs still suffer from serious efficiency roll-off and short operational lifetimes. Herein, a diboron-based molecule, PhCzDBA, is designed and its device exhibits a maximum EQE (EQEmax) of 33.8% and only slight roll-off (EQEmax of 31.5% at 1000 cd m–2 and 28.8% at 3000 cd m–2). Furthermore, it shows superior stability among reported TADF devices (LT80 of 113 h at the initial luminance of 3000 cd m–2). Remarkably, its nondoped OLED shows a high EQEmax of 17.7% with a λmax > 580 nm, surpassing most orange nondoped OLEDs. Moreover, a decent white OLED device with an EQEmax of 16.4% and a color rendering index (CRI) of 73 can be achieved by incorporating a simple sandwich emitting layer configuration, exhibiting the potential and diverse applications in many aspects.

Abstract:A series of robust thermally activate delayed fluorescence compounds containing rigid xanthenone acceptor and acridine‐based spiro donors are developed, which exhibit excellent photoluminescence quantum yields, large horizontal dipole ratios, and outstanding electroluminescence efficienceis with very small efficiencies roll‐offs. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have been widely studied for the fabrication of high‐performance organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), but the serious efficiency roll‐offs still remain unsolved in most cases. Herein, it is wish to report a series of robust green TADF compounds containing rigid xanthenone acceptor and acridine‐based spiro donors. The enhancement in molecular rigidity not only endows the compounds with improved thermal stability but also results in reduced geometric vibrations and thus lowered reorganization energies. These compounds exhibit distinct merits of high thermal stabilities, excellent photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (96%–97%), large horizontal dipole orientation ratios (87.4%–92.1%) and fast TADF rates (1.4–1.5 × 106 s‒1). The OLEDs using them as emitters furnish superb electroluminescence performances with outstanding external quantum efficiencies (ηexts) of up to 37.4% and very small efficiency roll‐offs. Moreover, highly efficient hyperfluorescence OLEDs are obtained by using them as sensitizers for the green mutilresonance TADF emitter BN2, delivering excellent ηexts of up to 34.2% and improved color purity. These results disclose the high potential of these TADF compounds as emitters and sensitizers for OLEDs.

Abstract:Red to near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) utilizing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters continue to exhibit significant external quantum efficiency (EQE) roll-off at high luminance levels exceeding 1000 cd m -2 , attributed to the relatively modest reverse intersystem crossing rate constant (k RISC ) of approximately 10 3 -10 4 s -1 . This study presents a novel TADF molecule, TCPP-DTPA, featuring a structurally rigid π-stacked multiple donor/acceptor design. The enhanced donor/acceptor interactions serve to minimize the energy gap between singlet and triplet states of the TCPP-DTPA, allowing for an efficient RISC process with a high rate constant of 4.67 × 10 6 s -1 . The OLED utilizing TCPP-DTPA demonstrates a peak EQE of 23.5% at a wavelength of 618 nm. Additionally, notable EQE values of 7.8% and 14.9% are observed at a luminance of 1000 cd m -2 , for OLEDs without and with an energy-transfer assistant dopant in the emissive layer, respectively. This research contributes to enhancing the efficiency of high-brightness red TADF OLEDs, while also offering valuable insights for the optimization of molecular design and device engineering to mitigate the electroluminescence efficiency roll-off.

Abstract:Deep-red to near-infrared (DR-NIR) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on purely organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters usually suffer from serious efficiency roll-offs. Herein, a series of 1,8-Naphthalimide-derivatives-based wedge-shape emitters, 2DN and 2PN, were designed and synthesized by adopting multiple donor units and isopropyl modification strategies. 2DN and 2PN exhibited strong DR-NIR TADF in the range 646–755 nm in toluene and films. The OLEDs, fabricated by both vacuum-deposition and solution-processed methods, all exhibited desired DR-NIR electroluminescence in the range 629–701 nm, and significantly reduced efficiency roll-offs (8.4% for 2DN and near zero for 2PN at 100 cd m−2), which benefit from short delayed lifetime (36.4 us for 2DN and 14.0 us for 2PN) and negligible π-π stacking in aggregation states. It indicates that the efficiency roll-offs of DR-NIR TADF OLEDs can be greatly reduced by designing emitters with appropriate design of molecular structures.

Abstract:The development of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters for highly efficiency and low roll-off red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is challenging. In this paper, three red TADF molecules are developed by adopting a donor–acceptor molecular architecture. It can be seen that the delayed fluorescence lifetime is dependent on the intensity and quantity of donors. Furthermore, by changing the dipole moment and regulating the intensity of charge transfer between host and emitter, highly efficiency red OLEDs with the maximum EQE of 21.1% were achieved due to the improvement of horizontal dipole orientations and charge transport balance. Through the analysis of the exciton dynamics model, the polaron-exciton annihilation is suppressed with faster reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process, which is greatly benefit to the improvement of efficiency roll-off at high luminance. Our results demonstrate that the selection of highly efficient TADF emitters and matched hosts is crucial for realizing high performance red TADF-based OLEDs.

Abstract:Luminescent materials with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) can harvest singlet and triplet excitons to afford high electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies for organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, TADF emitters generally have to be dispersed into host matrices to suppress emission quenching and/or exciton annihilation, and most doped OLEDs of TADF emitters encounter a thorny problem of swift efficiency roll‐off as luminance increases. To address this issue, in this study, a new tailor‐made luminogen (dibenzothiophene‐benzoyl‐9,9‐dimethyl‐9,10‐dihydroacridine, DBT‐BZ‐DMAC) with an unsymmetrical structure is synthesized and investigated by crystallography, theoretical calculation, spectroscopies, etc. It shows aggregation‐induced emission, prominent TADF, and interesting mechanoluminescence property. Doped OLEDs of DBT‐BZ‐DMAC show high peak current and external quantum efficiencies of up to 51.7 cd A−1 and 17.9%, respectively, but the efficiency roll‐off is large at high luminance. High‐performance nondoped OLED is also achieved with neat film of DBT‐BZ‐DMAC, providing excellent maxima EL efficiencies of 43.3 cd A−1 and 14.2%, negligible current efficiency roll‐off of 0.46%, and external quantum efficiency roll‐off approaching null from peak values to those at 1000 cd m−2. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the most efficient nondoped TADF OLEDs with small efficiency roll‐off reported so far.

Abstract:Novel lactam electron‐acceptors are utilized to construct high‐performance TADF molecules. The rigid molecular skeletons, ordered molecular arrangements, and precise control of excited states contribute to achieving ultra‐high PLQYs (98%−99%), high horizontal dipole ratios (87%−91%), and rapid RISC (kRISC ≈ 1.7 × 106 s−1) simultaneously. The optimized OLEDs attain high EQEs of up to 34.3%, accompanied by ultra‐high luminances and small efficiency roll‐offs. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials that exhibit simultaneously high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), rapid reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), and a high horizontal transition dipole ratio are highly desirable for realizing high‐performance organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, achieving this goal remains a formidable challenge due to the stringent molecular design principles involved. Herein, three highly efficient TADF materials based on lactam‐type electron‐acceptors are reported. The inherent rigidity and planar structure of lactam units, along with the ordered molecular arrangement in solid states, contribute to the reduction of nonradiative decay and the high horizontal transition dipole ratio in the optimized TADF emitters. Moreover, through precise control of the alignment of the lowest excited states by adjusting the charge transfer strength, the rate constants for reverse intersystem crossing (kRISC) are dramatically boosted. Consequently, the two optimized emitters exhibit outstanding merits of ultra‐high PLQYs (98% and 99%), high horizontal transition dipole ratios (91% and 87%), and fast RISC (kRISC ≈ 1.7 × 106 s−1). Thanks to these merits, the doped OLEDs achieve excellent performance. The top‐performing device achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency of 34.3%, a peak luminance of 57376 cd m−2, and small efficiency roll‐off.

Abstract:The host in phosphrescent organic light emitting devices (PhOLEDs), showing the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) charateristic, can effectively overcome the efficiency roll-off. Herein, six bipolar compounds with donor-pi-acceptor (D-pi-A) and D-pi-A-pi-D structures have been synthesized using 1,2,4-triazole derivative (TAZ) as an acceptor and phenothiazine (PTZ), phenoxazine (PXZ), and 9, 9-dimethylacridane (DMAC) as donors. The molecular structures were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and X-ray single-crystal diffractions. The large steric hindrance endows these molecules with typical TADF features, including the small singlet-triplet energy splitting (Delta E-ST) of 0.08-0.30 eV and completely spatially separate highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) electron densities. The PhOLEDs hosted by these novel TADF materials display excellent performances with low efficiency roll-off.
