Abstract:In order to investigate the dynamics and the new trends of scientific collaboration in Scientometrics, we use bibliographic data of articles published in the journal of Scientometrics during 4 investigated periods of 1978-1986 (Period I), 1987-1995 (Period II), 1996-2004 (Period III) and 2005-2011 (Period IV), and integrate social network analysis and co-occurrence analysis to visualize the microstructure of networks in Scientometrics. According to the results, we find that the most active scholars changed from Braun and Schubert (Period I) to Tijssen (Period II), and Glanzel (Period III and Period IV). In addition, the percentile of productive co-authors publishing at least 2 articles during each period kept increasing from 50% (Period I) to 57.8% (Period II), 78.1% (Period III) and 84% (Period IV). From Period II to Period IV, the size of collaboration sub-groups kept growing and some separate sub-groups began to merge together and formed a bigger collaboration group, and the trend of merging continued and became more and more obvious period by period. Finally, the comparative study of evaluating cross-time collaboration, especially the growth trends of CI and DC, revealed that Scientometrics is becoming an increasingly mature collaborative endeavor and dominated by collaborative relationships in recent years, which indicates a "big collaboration" age of Scientometrics is coming soon.
