Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.
Study on in-situ Modification of Vinyl Acetate-Acrylate Latex by Anatase TiO2 Sol

Abstract:With TiOSO4 as raw materials stable anatase TiO2 sol was prepared. The sol was prepared was added into vinyl acetate-acrylate latex, to in-situ the composite emulsion containing nano crystalline TiO2. The film was prepared by a dip-coating method from the above emulsion. XRD, TEM and SEM were adopted to characterize the phase structure of TiO2 sol, the size and shape of particles in the composite emulsion and the surface morphology of the film. The effect of TiO2 addition amount on the contact angle, surface morphology and photocatalytic performance of the film were also investigated. The results show that the composite emulsion has high stability and excellent film forming property, and TiO2 particles are well distributed in the composite film. With the increase of TiO2 sol addition amount, TiO2 particles in the surface of the film are increased, leading to the increase of roughness of the film. After the UV irradiation, the contact angle of composite film decreases with the increase of TiO2 sol addition amount, and the photocatalytic performance is gradually improved.

Abstract:The expanding behavior of vinylidene chloride(VDC)-acylonitrile(AN)-styrene(St) terpolymer particles containing 1-fluoro-1,1-dichloroethane(HCFC-141b) was monitored on line by a microscope equipped with a heating apparatus and an automatically photographing system.Effects of the factors such as copolymer composition,expanding temperature,concentration of blowing agent and particle size on the expanding behavior were investigated.It was found that an increase of AN or St units in VDC-AN-St terpolymer led to a decrease of expanding rate of particles.The expanding rate of VDC-AN-St copolymer particles increased with the increase of temperature and concentration of blowing agent,and decreased with the increase of the size of VDC terpolymer particles due to the loss of blowing agent to the surroundings.An “overshoot" phenomenon of particle growth was observed at high expanding rate,which may be attributed to the existence of inertia growth in free expansion of polymer particles.

Abstract:A class of monophosphonium photocatalysts is developed via the assembly of phosphines and alkynes, and demonstrated as efficient organic photoredox catalysts for the visible light-mediated cationic reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of vinyl ethers. This organocatalytic process can be carried out at a low catalyst loading (5-20 ppm), affording metal-free and well-defined poly(vinyl ether)s with predictable molecular weight and narrow dispersity in short reaction times. Remarkably, these photocatalysts could regulate the chain-growth by light with a strict temporal control, and also allow a correlation between the structure/property of the catalysts and their catalytic performance.

Abstract:Focusing on energy-saving and environmentally-friendly polymerization engineering, ultrasonication and light were employed as coupled physical stimuli to regulate solvent-free reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and iodine transfer polymerization (ITP). The solvent-free polymerizations of (meth)acrylate under different conditions were performed with good control even at high monomer conversion (>90%), yielding polymers with low values of dispersity and retention of chain-end functionality. Kinetic experiments and mechanistic insights confirmed that light triggered different photocatalytic pathways (e.g. oxidative quenching cycle for RAFT, reductive quenching cycle for ATRP, photogenerated radical species for ITP) to initiate and mediate the solvent-free polymerizations and ultrasonication was used as an effective process intensification method to improve the diffusive of photocatalysts and their derivatives to alleviate the diffusional limitations for keeping good control up to high monomer conversion. This as-developed strategy is proved to be an efficient technology to produce well-defined polymers without complicated processes of products separation from solvent and residual monomer removal.

Abstract:Although visible-light photoredox catalysis has implemented diverse reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of well-defined polymers with precision spatiotemporal control, the tolerance of redox-sensitive monomers remains a formidable challenge. In an alternative way, the photoiniferter polymerization technique offers an opportunity to address this unmet need. Herein, we report an efficient iodine-transfer radical ring-opening polymerization of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs), affording unsaturated linear polymers with predictable molecular weight and low dispersity. Commercially available alkyl iodide and light strips are used to initiate and control the polymer chain growth. Notably, this light-driven system tolerates active pentafluorophenyl ester group, whereby nearly quantitative post-modifications proceed and have rendered one-for-all preparation of polymers including crystalline semi-fluorinated P(VCPs) with enhanced material properties.

Abstract:Post-modification of polymers offers a route to prepare functionalized polymers through efficient chemical reactions, and hydrosilylation is one of the most effective strategies. Silane-functionalized polymers have found a wide range of potential applications, such as adhesives, rubbers, and drug delivery agents. For decades, the hydrosilylation for the post-modification of polymers has typically used transition metals as catalysts. Metal-free hydrosilylation strategies that can avoid metal residues in polymers are largely lacking in this field. Herein, we report the photocatalytic metal-free radical hydrosilylation strategy for the post-modification of polymers bearing pendant vinyl groups using the organic photocatalyst and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalyst under blue light irradiation. We used monofunctional silanes to functionalize polymers and the bis(silane)s as crosslinkers to prepare crosslinked polymers.

Abstract:Acetylene hydrochlorination is a vital industrial process for the manufacture of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Current thermocatalytic acetylene hydrochlorination requires toxic mercury-based or costly noble metal-based catalysts, high temperatures (≥180 °C) and excessive gaseous HCl. Here, we report a room-temperature photocatalytic acetylene hydrochlorination strategy involving concurrent coupling of electron-driven proton reduction (*H) and hole-driven chloride oxidation (*Cl) on photocatalyst surfaces. Under simulated solar light illumination, the developed noble-metal-free g-C3N4/BiOCl photocatalysts show a considerably high VCM production rate of 1198.6 μmol g-1 h-1 and a high VCM selectivity of 95% in a 0.1 M HCl aqueous solution. Even in chloride-rich natural seawater and acidified natural seawater, the VCM production rates of g-C3N4/BiOCl photocatalysts are up to 170.3 μmol g-1 h-1 with a VCM selectivity of 80.4% and 1247.7 μmol g-1 h-1 with a VCM selectivity of 94.7%, respectively. Moreover, with sunlight irradiation and acidified natural seawater, the g-C3N4/BiOCl photocatalysts in a large-scale photosystem retain outstanding acetylene hydrochlorination performance over 10 days of operation. The radical scavenging, in situ photochemical Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, theoretical simulations, and control experiments reveal that active *Cl and *H play key roles in photocatalytic acetylene hydrochlorination via a possible reaction pathway of C2H2 → *C2H2 → *C2H2Cl → *C2H3Cl → C2H3Cl. With respect to sustainability and low cost, this photocatalytic acetylene hydrochlorination offers excellent advantages over conventional thermocatalytic hydrochlorination technologies.

Abstract:Photoinduced metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization has been successfully extended to the synthesis of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with predictable molecular weights and low dispersities. This was achieved using phenothiazine derivatives as photoredox catalysts, which activate dormant alkyl bromides to reversibly form propagating radicals. Both 1H NMR spectroscopy and chain-end extension polymerization show highly preserved Br chain-end functionality in the synthesized PAN.

Abstract:The reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT) of vinyl acetate (VAc) were conducted in ethyl acetate using four xanthates with different Z group as the chain transfer agents. Results showed that the chemical structure of xanthate,the ratio of xanthate to initiator,and the monomer mass fraction had prominent effect on the RAFT radical polymerization of VAc. When Z group of the xanthates was 4-methoxyphenoxy,the RAFT polymerization of VAc was completely inhibited in presence of ethyl acetate in 720 minutes. The reason may be that the center is stablized by the electronic transfer complex between VAc chain end and the aromatic group in end of polymer. When Z groups of the xanthates were methoxy,ethoxy,or isopropoxy,the RAFT radical polymerization of VAc can proceed in a living /controlled way. The number-average relative molecular mass of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) increased linearly with the conversion,and the relative molecular mass distribution index of PVAc was lower than 1.4.

Abstract:Fluorinated polymers are important materials that are widely used in many areas. Herein, we report the development of a metal-free photocontrolled radical polymerization of semifluorinated (meth)acrylates with a new visible-light-absorbing organocatalyst. This method enabled the production of a variety of semifluorinated polymers with narrow molar-weight distributions from semifluorinated trithiocarbonates or perfluoroalkyl iodides. The high performance of "ON/OFF" control and chain-extension experiments further demonstrate the utility and reliability of this method. Furthermore, to streamline the preparation of semifluorinated polymers, a scalable continuous-flow approach has been developed. Given the broad interest in fluorinated materials and photopolymerization, we expect that this method will facilitate the development of advanced materials with unique properties.

Abstract:Fluorinated polymers have attracted increasing attention in a broad range of areas, and access to such polymers with low-cost agents and simple conditions would offer improved application opportunities for both academia and industry. An efficient preparation of a variety of semifluorinated poly(meth)acrylates without the use of a fluorinated iniferter/initiator or a solvent via photo-controlled radical polymerization is herein reported. The polymerizations can be efficiently switched between ON and OFF both in the presence and absence of a photoredox catalyst in response to visible light while maintaining a linear increase in polymer molar mass with conversion and first order kinetics. As demonstrated with gel permeation chromatography analysis and kinetic investigations, catalyzed photopolymerizations provide polymers with narrower molar mass distributions, shorter induction times and higher conversions in comparison with catalyst-free reactions, representing a reliable and efficient synthetic approach starting off from fluorine-free agents. The high chain-end fidelity of the polymer was confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS measurements and chain-extension experiments. Furthermore, the method using fluorine-free iniferters facilitated surface fabrication with fluoropolymers, providing highly hydrophobic materials. These results illustrate the simplicity and utility of the light-controlled polymerization of semifluorinated monomers.

Abstract:It is still a challenge to directly, without any control means, synthesize polymers bearing acetylene groups by normal free radical polymerization (FRP) of acetylenyl vinyl monomers, such as propargyl (meth)acrylates, because the reactive acetylene groups result in chain branching and gelation. Some propargyl acrylates with alkyl substitutes, however, can afford linear and soluble polymers. To clarify the substitute effects the FRP behaviours of a series of acrylates bearing acetylene groups with or without substitutes are studied. Homopolymerizations of acetylenyl acrylates without or with mono-substitute on propargyl led to branched polymers at early reaction stage, and became gelled after 0.5 h with monomer conversion over 12% and gel content over 50%. The acetylenyl acrylates with di-substitutes on propargyl can afford linear and soluble homo- and copolymers with‾Mn up to over 10,000 and with 45–75% monomer conversion, except for monomer 2-(2-methylbut-3-yn-2-yloxy)ethyl acrylate (DMPOEA) which has di-substitutes and a spacer connecting to the propargyl. Reactivities of vinyl and acetylene groups were found within 20 times difference by laser flash photolysis (LFP) experiments. The substitute effects of acetylenyl acrylates on FRP are explained by the intramolecular cycloaddition between CC and CC to form lactone from the s-cis conformers of the di-alkyl substituted acetylenyl acrylates. Propagating radicals can transform to stable allyl radicals by α-H atom transfer and thus the chain propagations stop. Both real-time FT-IR monitoring of photo-polymerization and high resolution 13C NMR spectra of the polymer confirmed the existence of lactone units on polymer chains. The hypothesis is also accordance with facts obsorved in the FRP. Finally postpolymerization modification through acetylene groups on polymer chains by photo thiol-yne click reaction is exemplified.

Abstract:It is well known that the recently developed photoinduced metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been considered as a promising methodology to completely eliminate transition metal residue in polymers. However, a serious problem needs to be improved, namely, large amount of organic photocatalysts should be used to keep the controllability over molecular weights and molecular weight distributions. In this work, a novel photocatalyst 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN) with strong excited state reduction potential is successfully used to mediate a metal-free ATRP of methyl methacrylate just with parts per million (ppm) level usage under irradiation of blue light emitting diode at room temperature, using ethyl α-bromophenyl-acetate as a typical initiator with high initiator efficiency. The polymerization kinetic study, multiple controlled "on-off" light switching cycle regulation, and chain extension experiment confirm the "living"/controlled features of this promising photoinduced metal-free ATRP system with good molecular weight control in the presence of ppm level photocatalyst 4CzIPN.
Promoting the hydrogenation of acetone C–C coupling into pinacol with dehydrogenation of formic acid over a NaOH-treated g-C3N4 photocatalyst

Abstract:We aimed to construct a method involving the photocatalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA) to promote the acetone reductive hydrogenation of C–C coupling, where photo-electrons and photo-holes could be effectively used. The results showed that the conversion rates of acetone and FA in the g-C3N4 photocatalytic acetone–FA coupling reaction system were 88.74% and 60.82%, respectively. Further research showed that the Na+ concentration on the surface of the C3N4 photocatalyst was also positively correlated with pinacol selectivity. The g-C3N4 treated with 5 M NaOH showed a high pinacol selectivity of 60.87%, which was increased by 32.30%.
