Abstract:Identifying applicable anode materials is a significant task for Li- and Na-ion battery (LIB and NIB) technologies. We propose the GaN monolayer (2D GaN) can be a good anode candidate. The GaN monolayer manifests stable Li/Na adsorption and inherently low theoretical voltages. Most excitingly, both high storage capacity and extremely fast Li/Na diffusion can be simultaneously realized in the GaN monolayer. For Li, the storage capacity and diffusion barrier is 938 mA h g-1 and 80 meV , respectively. And the values for Na are 625 mA h g-1 and 22 meV. Comparing with known 2D anode materials with similar scale of ion diffusion barriers, the GaN monolayer almost possesses the highest Li/Na storage capacity discovered to date. Our work suggests that the 2D GaN is a prospective anode material offering fast ion diffusion and high storage capacity.

Abstract:Silicon monoxide (SiO) is a promising anode material for thenext-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its higher capacity thangraphite and better cycle life than pure silicon. However, the issues ofvolume changes, low mass loading, and poor conductivity still exist. In thisstudy, an economic battery manufacturing technique is developed topromote the performance of commercial SiO/C-based batteries. A noveltriblock copolymer binder was synthesized and used to relieve the volumechanges and improve ion transportation. Copper nanowires were adopted inthe anode material to improve electrical conductivity. A high mass loadinganode with a laminated conductive structure was fabricated by spraying alayer upon layer. The synthesized SiO/C exhibits a high specific capacityretention of 606 mA h g-1after 200 cycles at a high areal mass loading of10.26 mg cm-2. Furthermore, under a current density of 1 C (1255 mA g-1),it delivers a reversible rate capacity of 620 mA h g-1. This novel design pavesa new way to fabricate high-performance SiO-based anodes for commercial LIB applications.
Disordered GaSiP Solid Solution Anodes with Liquid Metal Phase for High-Performance Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon (Si) has become the most promising next-generation anode to replace commercial graphite for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) profiting from its large reversible capacity of 4,200 mA h g-1. However, its sluggish reaction kinetics and large volume effect need to be resolved. Herein, we prepare a ternary GaSiP solid solution with a disordered lattice by a facile mechanochemistry method. As anodes of LIBs, the GaSiP provides a reversible capacity of 1,527 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 with an initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 90.8% based on the reversible Li-storage mechanism integrated intercalation and subsequent conversion processes as confirmed by crystallography characterization and electrochemical measurements. Importantly, the GaSiP carbon composite presents a long cycling stability of maintaining 1,362 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles at 0.1 A g-1, and 75% capacity retention rate after 1,200 cycles at 2 A g-1, and a high-rate performance of remaining 440 mA h g-1 at 20 A g-1. Broadly, this work opens the door to develop ternary phosphides with disordered lattice and liquid metallic phase using for electrochemical energy conversion and storage.
Gradient selenium-doping regulating interfacial charge transfer in zinc sulfide/carbon anode for stable lithium storage

Abstract:Metal sulfides have attracted much attentions as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of the high theoretical capacity. However, the poor electronic conductivity and large volume variation usually give rise to the rapid capacity decay and undesirable rate performance, severely hampering their practical application. Herein, a gradient selenium-doped hollow sandwich structured zinc sulfide/carbon (ZnS/C) composite (Se-HSZC) is designed and fabricated as long life-span and stable anode material for LIBs. The gradient Se-doping enhances the interfacial charge transfer in Se-HSZC, while the unique double carbon shell sandwich structure further greatly reduces the volume expansion and ensures the electron fast transportation. Consequently, the Se-HSZC anode presents outstanding rate capability (654 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1) with remarkable reversible capacity (567 mAh g−1 after 1500 cycles at 4 A g−1) for the half battery. In particular, a reversible capacity of 457 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 is achieved after 50 cycles for the full battery with LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 as cathode. This work offers a promising design route of novel metal sulfides nanostructures for high performance LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon is emerging as a promising next-generation lithium-ion battery anode because of its high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, the poor cyclability and inferior rate performance hinder its large-scale applications. Here, hollow silicon/germanium (H-SiGe) nanospheres with a binary-active component and heterogeneous structure combined with porous carbon (pC) reinforcing are synthesized as lithium-ion battery anodes. Experimental studies demonstrate that the H-SiGe/pC anodes possess tiny volume expansion, high ion/electron conductivity, and stable electrode interface. Theoretical calculations confirm that through the replacement of Si using Ge with rational component control, the diffusion energy barrier of lithium will be reduced and lithium storage ability can be improved because of the slight charge polarization. Benefiting from these unique merits, the H-SiGe/pC anodes display a high initial specific capacity of 2922.2 mA h g -1 at 0.1 A g -1 , superior rate capability (59.4% capacity retention from 0.5 to 8 A g -1 ), and excellent cycling stability (81% retention after 700 cycles at 5 A g -1 at 1.0-1.2 mg cm -2 ). An outstanding stability is preserved even at a high loading of 3.2 mg cm -2 with an improved reversible capacity of 429.1 mA h g -1 after 500 cycles at 4 A g -1 . Furthermore, the full-cell with the prelithiated H-SiGe/pC anode and LiFePO 4 cathode exhibits an impressive capacity performance.

Abstract:Ultrahigh specific capacity silicon is considered as a potential anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In order to reduce the influence of the large volume expansion and poor conductivity of silicon, a few silicon nanoparticles are now used in commercial anodes, which increases costs and weakens the overall specific capacity. Here, we used low-cost aluminum-silicon alloys as raw materials to obtain porous silicon (pSi) particles by simple chemical etching. Then, Ag doped porous silicon/graphite (Ag-pSi/G) composite was prepared by depositing ultrafine Ag nanoparticles and mixing low-quality graphite. The large specific surface area, Ag nanoparticles and graphite provide multiple electron transport pathways in Ag-pSi/G, so they greatly increase the conductivity of the Ag-pSi/G and effectively reduce its volume expansion. The Ag-pSi/G composite shows high initial charging capacity (3313 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1)) and initial coulombic efficiency (82.2%), and stable reversible specific capacity of 770 mAh g(-1) over 300 cycles at 1 A g(-1). This simple and scalable preparation process provides a new thought for the broad application of micron silicon materials in the high-performance LIBs.
Robust Ultrafine-graphite-sheet/Si@Carbon Microsphere with Double Protective Layers as High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anode

Abstract:The anchored Si on the graphite as anode has attracted enormous attention as a promising alternative to graphite in the high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the limited Si load, huge volume expansion and structural instability seriously restrict the performance of LIBs. In this work, the robust Si-based microspheres with double protective layers of ultrafine graphite sheet (UGS) and carbon layer are fabricated in a large scale and low-cost. The Si loads up to 44.7 wt% in the abundant 3D interconnected nano-porous channels. Both of UGS and UGS/nano-Si display excellent fast discharge/charge properties, compared with bulk flake graphite (FG) and FG/nano-Si. UGS/nano-Si@C exhibits an excellent electrochemical behavior. The initial capacity is up high to 1431.1 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and the capacity retention can be maintained at 82.5% after 300 cycles. The excellent electrochemical properties are mainly ascribed to the robust composite structure and 3D interconnected nano-porous channels, which are beneficial for the fast electron/lithium-ion transfer and the reduced volume change. The ultrafine graphite sheet also shortens the lithium-ion diffusion path. The feasible strategy of the enhancement of Si load, the improvement of electronic conductivity and structural stability of Si-C composites will be significant for the next-generation electrode fabrication of high-capacity LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) and Si-based compounds have been considered by many researchers as one of the anode materials for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their extraordinarily large theoretical capacity, moderate operating voltage, and abundant resources. However, silicon’s poor conductivity and significant volume changes during charge and discharge, compared to conventional carbon materials, severely restrict its widespread use in LIBs. In this study, a two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous Si nanosheet/carbon (pSi@C) composite is designed using cetrimonium bromide–disodium edetate dihydrate (CTAB–EDTA) as a template via a sol–gel method, magnesium thermal reduction method, and thermal decomposition method. The vertical diffusion distance of Li+ is significantly reduced by the 2D Si nanosheets. Additionally, the carbon coating on the Si surface provides a protective layer to limit the volume expansion of Si and form a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI). This enhances the structural integrity and cycle stability of the pSi@C anode material during Li+ insertion and extraction. At a current density of 1 A g–1, the reversible capacity of the pSi@C composite after 150 cycles is 2236 mAh g–1, with a capacity retention rate of 71.5%. The electrode’s capacity is 467.8 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 5 A g–1. Therefore, this unique template and technology can be used to design 2D anode composites with excellent properties, thereby providing an effective strategy for commercial application of LIBs.

Stable and Conductive Carbon Networks Enabling High-Performance Silicon Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Many strategies have been developed to improve the Li-ion storage performance of silicon (Si)-based anodes. Unfortunately, production and application of the Si-based anodes are still severely impeded by high cost, complex synthesis and poor practical performance. Herein, we demonstrate a cost-effective strategy for large-scale production of Si-based anodes by pyrolyzing economical gelatin and ball-milled micron-sized Si particles. During the pyrolysis process, the good water solubility and film-forming property of gelatin enable it to form continuous carbon networks with enhanced dual-interfacial bonding between Si particles and current collectors. As a result, the obtained Si anode exhibits an integrated dense structure with ultrahigh Si content and excellent mechanical flexibility. The BMSi@GC anode delivers a high initial coulombic efficien cy (88.2%) with high capacities (2,738 mAh g(-1), 2,157 mAh cm(-3), and 2.74 mAh cm(-2)). Moreover, a BMSi@GC//LiCoO2 pouch cell shows high energy densities (537 Wh kg(-1) and 585.1 Wh L-1) with good cycling performance.
Fast Intercalation of Lithium in Semi-Metallic γ-GeSe Nanosheet: A New Group-IV Monochalcogenide for Lithium-Ion Battery Application

Abstract:Existence of van der Waals gaps renders two-dimensional (2D) materials ideal passages of lithium for being used as anode materials. However, the requirement of good conductivity significantly limits the choice of 2D candidates. So far only graphite is satisfying due to its relatively high conductivity. Recently, a new polymorph of layered germanium selenide (Gamma-GeSe) was proven to be semimetal in its bulk phase with a higher conductivity than graphite while its monolayer behaves semiconducting. In this work, by using first-principles calculations, we examined the possibility of using this new group-IV monochalcogenide, Gamma-GeSe, as anode in the Li-ion battery (LIBs). Our studies revealed that Li atom would form an ionic adsorption with adjacent selenium atoms at the hollow site and exist in cationic state (lost 0.89 e to Gamma-GeSe). Results of climbing image-nudged elastic band show the diffusion barrier of Li is 0.21 eV in the monolayer limit, which can activate a relatively fast diffusion even at room temperature on the Gamma-GeSe surface. The calculated theoretical average voltages range from 0.071 to 0.015 V at different stoichiometry of LixGeSe with minor volume variation, suggesting its potential application as anode of LIBs. The predicted moderate binding energy, a low open circuit voltage (comparable to graphite) and a fast motion of Li suggests that Gamma-GeSe nanosheet can be chemically exfoliated via Li intercalation and a promising candidate as the anode material for LIBs.

Synthesis Of Complementary Hierarchical Structured Si/C Composites With High Si Content For Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Si/C composites are considered as the most promising anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high specific capacity and low cost. However, the commercialized Si/C composites cannot maintain a Si content over 10 wt% for sustaining an acceptable cycle life. To achieve long-term cycle stability for Si/C composites with high Si content is still very challenging. Here, we report a rationally designed double-morphology Si/graphene (DMSiG) composite with a high Si content of 78 wt%, and prove its feasibility as a high performance anode material for LIBs. DMSiG composes of Si quantum-dot decorated graphene and mesoporous Si spheres with a complementary hierarchical structure. The graphene framework enhances the electronic conductivity, alleviates the aggregation of mesoporous Si spheres and provides space and flexibility to buffer the volume change during cycling. Mesoporous Si spheres contribute to a large reversible capacity and support the hierarchical architecture of DMSiG. The Si quantum-dots help to build firm connections between graphene and mesoporous Si spheres to avoid their separation during cycling. Coupling these features together, the DMSiG anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 1318 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 500 mA g(-1) and 684 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1).
Si/SiO2@Graphene Superstructures for High‐Performance Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:The elaborately designed anode of Si/SiO2@graphene superstructure (Si/SiO2@G‐S) is integrated by 3D‐bridged SiO2 network coated around Si nanoparticles with graphene modification. Benefiting from high tap density, and superior adaptability in expansion generated by the bridged SiO2, the Si/SiO2@G‐S‐based batteries display superior electrochemical performance and address the key challenges to a certain extent. The superstructure composed of various functional building units is promising nanostructure for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) anodes with extreme volume change and structure instability, such as silicon‐based materials. Here, a top‐down route to fabricate Si/SiO2@graphene superstructure is demonstrated through reducing silicalite‐1 with magnesium reduction and depositing carbon layers. The successful formation of superstructure lies on the strong 3D network formed by the bridged‐SiO2 matrix coated around silicon nanoparticles. Furthermore, the mesoporous Si/SiO2 with amorphous bridged SiO2 facilitates the deposition of graphene layers, resulting in excellent structural stability and high ion/electron transport rate. The optimized Si/SiO2@graphene superstructure anode delivers an outstanding cycling life for ≈1180 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1 over 500 cycles, excellent rate capability for ≈908 mAh g−1 at 12 A g−1, great areal capacity for ≈7 mAh cm−2 at 0.5 mA cm−2, and extraordinary mechanical stability. A full cell test using LiFePO4 as the cathode manifests a high capacity of 134 mAh g−1 after 290 loops. More notably, a series of technologies disclose that the Si/SiO2@graphene superstructure electrode can effectively maintain the film between electrode and electrolyte in LIBs. This design of Si/SiO2@graphene superstructure elucidates a promising potential for commercial application in high‐performance LIBs.

Abstract:Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) is one of the most promising anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity and ability to maintain self‐healing behavior during the reaction process. However, the susceptibility to volume expansion during the alloying reaction, which affects cycling performance, and the unclear lithium storage mechanism limit the application of Ga2O3. For this purpose, α‐Ga2O3@ chitosan‐derived carbon nanocomposites (α‐Ga2O3@CS NPs) were synthesized by introducing biomass materials. Due to the capacity contribution of Ga2O3 and the inhibition of biomass carbon on volume expansion, the composites exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. A high reversible capacity was shown in the long‐cycle test, with a discharge capacity of 505.1mAh g‐1 after 130 cycles at 0.2 A g‐1, with no significant decrease from the initial capacity. During the periodic rate performance test of 0.1 to 5A g‐1, the reversible discharge capacity of the electrode material was maintained at 482.2 mAh g‐1 when the current was restored to 0.1 A g‐1. In addition, the lithium storage process of the electrode was investigated by in‐situ X‐ray diffraction (in‐situ XRD), which, together with the low‐cost synthesis process, promoted the practical application prospect of Ga2O3. Abstract:Silicon (Si) has been regarded as a promising anode material for next-generation Li-ion batteries by virtue of its high theoretical capacity and low working potential. Although various strategies have been proposed to solve the problems of Si anodes (e.g., poor electrical conductivity and volume effects), there is still a lack of efficient ways to simultaneously realize the high capacity, good rate capability and stability of Si anodes. Herein, an interface-enhanced 2-D carbon network is introduced into the Si anode by a simple templating method using gelatin as a carbon precursor. Electrochemical measurement, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical simulation results suggest that the unique gelatin-derived carbon nanosheet (GCNS) structure not only promotes the Li-ion diffusion and electron transport within the Si anode, but also stabilizes the Si structure. The Si anode having the interface-enhanced GCNS network (Si@GCNS) exhibits high charge capacity (2975 mA h g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1)), good rate capability (1892 mA h g(-1) at 5 A g(-1)), and long lifetime (with a capacity retention of 83.4% after 400 cycles), superior to the Si-based anodes modified by 3-D or 2-D carbons. Moreover, a pouch cell based on the Si@GCNS anode and a commercial LiFePO4 cathode shows a high energy density of similar to 460 W h kg(-1) and good cycling performance.
Interface Engineering of Silicon/Carbon Thin-Film Anodes for High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon is one of the most promising alternative active materials for next-generation lithium-ion battery (LIB) applications due to its advantage of high specific capacity. However, the enormous volume variations during lithiation/delithiation still remain to be an obstacle to commercialization. In this work, binder-free pure silicon and silicon/carbon (Si/C) multilayer thin-film electrodes, prepared by scalable one-step magnetron sputtering, are systematically investigated by an interlayer strategy. Herein, we present a rationally structural modification by an amorphous carbon film to enhance the electrical conductivity, mechanical integrity, and electrochemical performance of Si film-based LIBs. Therefore, to maintain the consistency of the direct-contact layer with the electrolyte and current collection, symmetrical Si/C/Si and Si/C/Si/C/Si/C/Si electrodes are deliberately designed to study the influence of embedded carbon. An anode with a carbon content of 10.38 wt % yields an initial discharge specific capacity of 1888.74 mAh g-1 and a capacity retention of 96.82% (1243.56 mAh g-1) after 150 cycles at a high current density of 4000 mA g-1. It also shows that the best rate capability remains 96.0% of the initial capacity in the 70th cycle. At last, three mechanisms are proposed for an in-depth understanding of the interface effect. This work offers a new perspective scheme toward Si/C-based LIBs with a capability of high rate and high energy density.
Bowl-like 3C-SiC Nanoshells Encapsulated in Hollow Graphitic Carbon Spheres for High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Searching for new electrode materials with high capacities and excellent rate performance is crucial for the development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Silicon carbide (SiC), which is traditionally considered to be electrochemically inert toward lithiation, has recently been demonstrated to be a potential high-performance anode material upon activation by surface graphitization. Despite the great potential, it remains a grand challenge to synthesize SiC nanostructures with precisely controlled morphologies and surface properties, due to the rather high reaction temperatures (>1200 degrees C) typically required for SiC crystallization. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel type of SiC nanostructures in which bowl-like, ultrathin SiC nanoshells were encapsulated in hollow graphitic carbon spheres (designated as SiC@HGSs), which exhibited unexpectedly high electrochemical performance when used as LIB anodes. SiC@HGSs retained a stable capacity of 1345 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 0.6 A g(-1) after 600 cycles and 742 mAh g(-1) at 3 A g(-1) after 1000 cycles. Even at a high current density of 6 A g(-1), SiC@HGSs could still deliver a capacity of similar to 400 mAh g(-1). The superior high-rate performance is attributable to the unique architecture and exceptional structural durability of SiC@HGSs.
Exploring the Sodium Ion Storage Mechanism of Gallium Sulfide (ga2s3): a Combined Experimental and Theoretical Approach.

Abstract:Developing sodium ion battery (SIB) anode materials of a low-cost and high-capacity nature for future large-scale applications still involves challenges. Herein, we have reported gallium sulfide (Ga2S3) as a novel SIB anode material for the first time. Ga2S3 nanorods have been synthesized via the facile hydrothermal preparation of a GaOOH precursor with subsequent H2S annealing. Mixed with graphene upon electrode preparation, this Ga2S3 electrode maintains a reversible specific capacity of 476 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.4 A g(-1), with a coulombic efficiency of over 99%. Ex situ XRD analysis and theoretical calculations are employed to comprehensively elucidate the detailed sodium ion storage mechanism of Ga2S3, which is composed of initial Na+ intercalation, a subsequent multi-step conversion reaction between S and Na+, and an eventual alloying reaction between Ga and Na+ with the end product of Na7Ga13. Further kinetics analysis has demonstrated that the conversion reaction is the rate-limiting step due to a multi-step reaction with the intermediate phase of GaS. Moreover, the appearance of liquid metal Ga, as confirmed via TEM observations and theoretical calculations, can serve as a self-healing agent that repairs cracks in the electrode. Our findings shed light on the further design of Ga-based materials, and they also can be extended to solid-state-battery systems.
Compact Si/C Anodes Fabricated by Simultaneously Regulating the Size and Oxidation Degree of Si for Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The large volume expansion during lithiation and poor conductivity of Si as anodes of Li-ion batteries limit their practical applications. Herein, a compact graphite/Si/C (GSC) composite is designed in which the particle size and oxidation degree of Si can be regulated simultaneously by sand milling micro-Si particles. Optimal Si with a particle size of about 125 nm and an oxide layer (SiOx) thickness of about 8 nm is obtained by controlling the sanding time, and is further uniformly coated on the surface of graphite. The synergistic effects of nanocrystallization and the SiOx layer of Si can minimize the volume expansion to achieve optimum electrochemical performance. A carbon coating is further applied on the outermost surface of graphite/Si particles to increase the conductivity, reduce the volume expansion, and stabilize the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) of nano-Si. The obtained GSC with a high tap density of 0.95 g cm(-3) delivers an initial reversible capacity of 675 mA h g(-1) and the capacity retention reaches 87.3% after 200 cycles at 1C. When the charging rate increases to 10C, the GSC still delivers a capacity of 528.0 mA h g(-1). Furthermore, a LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2/GSC-graphite pouch cell with a capacity of 1869.3 mA h exhibits a high capacity retention of 90.1% even after 150 cycles under a high compaction density of 1.55 g cm(-3) for GSC-graphite. The excellent performance demonstrates that the compact GSC composite is an attractive candidate for anode materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Silicon has been regarded as one of the most promising alternatives to the current commercial graphite anode for Li-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and abundance. Although high gravimetric capacity (mAh/g) of Si-based materials can be achieved, areal capacity (mAh/cm2), an indication of the energy stored at the electrode level, has rarely been discussed. Herein, a novel micro-sized graphene/Si–C composite (G/Si–C) is reported, in which micro-sized Si–C particles are wrapped by graphene sheets. Owing to dual conductive networks both within single particles formed by carbon and between different particles formed by graphene, low electrical resistance can be maintained at high mass loading, which enables a high degree of material utilization. Areal capacity thus increases almost linearly with mass loading. As a result, G/Si–C exhibits a high areal capacity of 3.2mAh/cm2 after 100 cycles with high coulombic efficiency (average 99.51% from 2nd to 100th cycle), comparable to that of commercial anodes. The current findings demonstrate the importance of building a conductive network at the electrode level to ensure high material utilization at high mass loading and may shed light on future designs of Si-based anodes with high areal capacity.
