Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.
Structure, stability, and mobility of small Pd clusters on the stoichiometric and defective TiO$_2$ (110) surfaces

Abstract:We report on the structure and adsorption properties of Pd$_n$ ($n=1-4$) clusters supported on the rutile TiO$_2$ (110) surfaces with the possible presence of a surface oxygen vacancy or a subsurface Ti-interstitial atom. As predicted by the density functional theory, small Pd clusters prefer to bind to the stoichiometric titania surface or at sites near subsurface Ti-interstitial atoms. The adsorption of Pd clusters changes the electronic structure of the underlying surface. For the surface with an oxygen vacancy, the charge localization and ferromagnetic spin states are found to be largely attenuated owing to the adsorption of Pd clusters. The potential energy surfaces of the Pd monomer on different types of surfaces are also reported. The process of sintering is then simulated via the Metropolis Monte Carlo method. The presence of oxygen vacancy likely leads to the dissociation of Pd clusters. On the stoichiometric surface or surface with Ti-interstitial atom, the Pd monomers tend to sinter into larger clusters, whereas the Pd dimer, trimer and tetramer appear to be relatively stable below 600 K. This result agrees with the standard sintering model of transition metal clusters and experimental observations.

Abstract:Atomically precise Pd-thiolate clusters are well-known for their well-defined structures and diverse applications involving catalysis, sensors, and biomedicine. While many of these clusters have been studied, their molecular structures typically feature a tiara-like arrangement. In this study, we present the first example of a non-tiara-like Pd-thiolate cluster: the octahedral Pd6(SC6H11)12 (denoted as Pd6-Oct). The composition and geometric structure of the cluster were characterized using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) together with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD). Despite having a similar chemical composition to tiara-like Pd6(SC2H4Ph)12 (denoted as Pd6-Tia), Pd6-Oct exhibits a distinctly different geometric structure. Additionally, UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations provided valuable insights into the electronic structures of these clusters. The excited-state dynamics, host-guest chemistry, and the catalytic properties of Pd6-Oct and Pd6-Tia were examined to compare their structure-property relationships. This research represents significant advances in the synthesis and understanding of structure-property correlations in Pd-thiolate clusters.

Structures and stabilities of small lead oxide clusters

Abstract:The structures and stabilities of small lead oxide clusters PbmOn with m=1–4, n=1–2m are systematically studied using density functional theory. It is found that the lowest-energy structures of all these clusters can be obtained by the sequential oxidation of small “core” lead clusters. For Pb-rich clusters (oxygen-to-lead ratio<1), oxygen atoms favor bridge sites for Pb2On and Pb3On and surface sites for Pb4On. The lead-monoxide-like clusters (PbO)i (i=1–4) have great stability because of their significant dissociation energies and highest occupied molecular orbital–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps. This suggests that they could be adopted as the building blocks of cluster-assembled materials. For O-rich clusters (oxygen-to-lead ratio>1), the grouping of oxygen atoms usually appears. It is found that the structures with a grouping of more than two oxygen atoms are unstable.

Abstract:Pt-Pd bimetallic catalyst exhibits excellent activity and promising stability in CH 4 oxidation. In this study, the monometallic Pt 13 , bimetallic Pt 12 -Pd and 12 clusters were built and optimized via quantum chemistry method to uncover the effect of Pd doping on CH 4 oxidation mechanism over Pt clusters. The feasible reaction paths for CH 4 oxidation were systematically considered and the parameters of every step of the elementary reaction were obtained with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. On the Pt 13 and 12 clusters, the optimal reaction path for CH 4 oxidation is CH 4 * → CH 3 * → CH 2 * (+O*) → CH 2 O* → CHO* → CO* (+O*) → CO 2 * and the rate-determining step (RDS) is CH 3 * → CH 2 * with an energy barrier of 1.28 eV (for Pt 13 ) and 1.20 eV (for 12 ) respectively. On the Pt 12 -Pd cluster, the optimal reaction path changes into CH 4 * → CH 3 *(+O*) → CH 3 O* → CH 2 O* → CHO* → CO* (+OH*) → COOH* → CO 2 * and the RDS is CH 4 * → CH 3 * with an energy barrier of 1.28 eV. Doping Pd in the center of the Pt 13 cluster ( 12 ) will improve the catalytic performance while doping Pd in the shell (Pt 12 -Pd) will change the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:The stability of model catalysts based on size-selected Pd clusters supported on graphite surfaces has been explored under realistic conditions for catalytic oxidation of methane at mild temperatures. The experimental results show that aggregated films of nanoparticles are highly unstable, but clusters pinned to the surface in the submonolayer coverage regime are much more stable against sintering. The degree of sintering of the pinned clusters, which does occur, proceeds by the release of clusters from their pinning sites. Abstract:The reaction mechanism of O2 dissociation on PtxRuyMz (M = Fe, Ni, Cu, Mo, Sn, x + y + z = 4, x ≥ 1, y ≥ 1) alloy catalysts have been investigated with density functional theory calculations in this work. For bare alloy clusters, bimetallic clusters are more stable than the ternary alloy clusters. The geometries of the PtxRuyMz–O2 system, O–O bond stretching frequency and electronic-structure details have been investigated. The energies of O2 adsorption on PtRu clusters are slightly higher than those on PtxRuyMz clusters, and the more charge transfer to O2 from the metal cluster, the higher O2 the adsorption energy obtains. The reaction barriers show that the catalytic performance of trimetallic clusters are better than those of bimetallic clusters, and Pt2RuM clusters exhibit superior catalytic activity for O2 dissociation. The different performance of these alloy clusters for O2 dissociation is scrutinised with aid of molecular orbital and natural bond orbital population analysis.

First-principles study of the stability of the icosahedral and clusters

Abstract:DMol cluster method based on density-functional theory has been used to study the structural stability of icosahedral Ti 13, Ti 13− 1, and Ti 13+ 1 clusters. The calculated results show that Ti 13, Ti 13− 1, and Ti 13+ 1 clusters favor a D 3 d structure due to Jahn-Teller effect. However, for neutral Ti 13 and positively charged Ti 13+ 1 clusters, the binding energies of the I h and D 5 d structures are quite close to that of the D 3 d structure. The small distortion from the icosahedron in the D 3 d structure is consistent with the prediction from the collision-induced dissociation experiment on positively charged Ti 13+ 1 cluster. The structural distortion in the charged clusters and the bonding feature in the neutral icosahedral Ti 13 cluster are discussed. In addition, all the clusters in the present study are found to be magnetic and show small magnetic moments.

Abstract:Understanding agglomeration of late transition metal atoms, such as Pd, on metal oxide supports, such as TiO2, is critical for designing heterogeneous catalysts as well as for controlling metal/oxide interfaces in general. One approach for reducing particle sintering is to modify the metal oxide surface with hydroxyls that decrease adatom mobility. We study by scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and Monte Carlo (MC) computer simulations the atomistic processes of Pd sintering on a hydroxyl-modified TiO2(011)-2 × 1 surface. The formation of small 1-3 atom clusters that are stable at room temperature is achieved on the hydroxylated surface, while much larger clusters are formed under the same conditions on a hydroxyl-free surface. DFT shows that this is a consequence of stronger binding of Pd atoms adjacent to hydroxyls and increased surface diffusion barriers for Pd atoms on the hydroxylated surface. DFT, kinetic MC, and ReaxFF-based NVT-MC simulations show that Pd clusters larger than single Pd monomers can adsorb the hydrogen from the oxide surface and form Pd hydrides. This depletes the surface hydroxyl coverage, thus allowing Pd to more freely diffuse and agglomerate at room temperature. Experimentally, this causes a bimodal cluster size distribution with 1-3 atom clusters prevalent at low Pd coverage, while significantly larger clusters become dominant at higher Pd concentrations. This study demonstrates that hydroxylated oxide surfaces can significantly reduce Pd cluster sizes, thus enabling the preparation of surfaces populated with metal clusters composed of single to few atoms.
Manipulating Stabilities and Catalytic Properties of Trinuclear Metal Clusters Through Tuning the Chemical Bonding: H-2 Adsorption and Activation

Abstract:Chemical bonding involving metal-metal (M-M) and metal-ligand (M-L) interactions provides an opportunity to tune the stabilities and catalytic properties of metal clusters. We report here the electronic and bonding properties of a series of trinuclear clusters [M3X3(PR3)(3)](+) (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; X = F, Cl, Br, I; R = H) to explore the electronic effect on the adsorption and activation of H-2 and other small molecules. The chemical bonding model of M-3 is discussed in detail, and the formal +4/3 oxidation state of the metal element in the M-3 cluster is proposed. Metallic sigma-aromaticity is also found in the trinuclear clusters. We have shown that the stability and the catalytic activity of the trinuclear clusters can be tuned by altering the energies and compositions of M-M and M-L chemical bonding orbitals. The performance of H-2 dissociative adsorption on these clusters can be explained by the orbital interactions. Relativistic effects also play a significant role in determining the activity of H-2 adsorption. This finding provides an example for controlling catalytic properties through tuning chemical bonding of metal clusters.

Abstract:The activity in CO oxidation of regular arrays of Pd clusters, in the size range 5 – 180 atoms, supported on alumina has been studied by a molecular beam method. The Pd clusters are grown on a nanostructured ultrathin alumina film on Ni3Al (111) providing a hexagonal array of clusters with a narrow size distribution. The steady state turnover frequency (TOF) is measured as a function of the mean cluster size. The TOF increases with size. Below about 20 atoms, the TOF increases rapidly and for larger clusters it grows slowly and reaches at 180 atoms a value close to those obtained on bulk single crystals. The size effect is explained by the smaller activity of Pd atoms in contact with the alumina support.

Abstract:Most theoretical investigations about titanium oxide clusters focus on (TiO$_2$)$_n$. However, many Ti$_n$O$_m$ clusters with $m\neq 2n$ are produced experimentally. In this work, first-principles calculations are performed to probe the evolution of Ti$_n$O$_m$ clusters. Our investigations show that for $n=3$-$11$, there exist one relatively stable specie; while for $n=12$-$18$, there are two relatively stable species: Ti-rich and O-rich species. HOMO-LOMO calculations show that the gap can be tuned by changing the size and configurations of Ti$_n$O$_m$ clusters. Our investigation provides insights into the evolution of cluster-to-bulk process in titanium oxide.

Abstract:The use of size-selected metal clusters as model catalysts opens up many exciting new possibilities for the study of size-dependent catalysis. By supporting these size-selected clusters on planar thin-film or single-crystal metal oxide substrates, a variety of analysis techniques can be employed to examine them in detail in an effort to understand how and why these clusters exhibit unique reactivity. In this review, we focus on examples involving CO oxidation by gold clusters, NO reduction and the cycloisomerization of acetylene with Pd clusters, and hydrazine decomposition over Ir clusters. We conclude with some thoughts about in situ reaction probes and the potential of atom-by-atom design of bimetallic clusters with regard to size and composition.
Unusual Stability and Activity of DI-Pd19 Clusters for O2 Dissociation

Abstract:Density functional calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate adsorption and dissociation of O2 molecules on the DI (double icosahedron) Pd19 nanocluster. Exceptionally high activity is found for oxygen bond cleavage over its waist region, with an energy barrier of only 0.06 eV and a reaction time of 0.5 ps. This stems from the availability of valley-like Pd4 ensembles and the large weights of LUMO and HOMO. Moreover, this cluster is highly stable in reaction conditions up to 500 K, so it can be a good candidate for the development of excellent nanocatalysts.
Stable Pt Single Atoms and Nanoclusters on Ultrathin CuO Film and Their Performances in CO Oxidation

Abstract:A series of model catalysts consisting of Pt single atoms and nanoclusters supported by monolayered CuO film grown at Cu(110) were successfully prepared, which could be stabilized well above room temperature and which exhibited a high performance in CO oxidation at temperatures as low as similar to 360 K. Combined scanning tunneling microscopy and temperature-programmed desorption measurements directly evidenced that at the initial CO oxidation stage, oxygen vacancy in the CuO lattice was generated at the nearest neighbor of the Pt nanoclusters. The experimental measurements showed that the oxidation activity was inversely proportional to the Pt nanocluster size. In contrast, the Pt single atoms possessed no surface reactivity for the CO oxidation because of the early and complete desorption of CO before its oxidation on the model catalysts commenced.
Atomistic Study of Metal Clusters Supported on Oxide Surface

Abstract:Metal clusters on oxide surface are a widely studied topic in surface science and technology. In this work, we use the ab initio based pair potentials to study the shape evolution of these clusters with their width from 3Å to 90Å. The clusters have a basic polyhedron shape covered by (001) and (111) faces, with four undetermined parameters. The main purpose of this work is to determine the structure parameters numerically. Here, we use a combination of energy minimization calculation, least square method and Lagrange multiplier method, and go through a series of metals including Ag, Al, Au, Pd and Rh. As a result, we find that these clusters have a truncated octahedron structure on MgO(001) surface, with a square contact face for Ag, Al and Au, and an octagon one for Pd and Rh. Also, we see that misfit dislocation appears when the cluster becomes large, first at the edge, then inside the contact area.

Abstract:Structural evolution and chemical state of alloy catalysts under reaction conditions is crucial to the activity, selectivity and stability of the catalytic reactions. To provide fundamental insight, we present here a density functional theory study of the structural change of Pt–3d transition metal (TM, including Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) alloys with (111) orientation under the reductive and oxidizing conditions as well as its effect on the CO oxidation. We find that under the reductive conditions (vacuum and CO), 3d TM prefers to occupy in the subsurface layer due to its higher surface energy and smaller atomic size. While under the oxidizing conditions, the strong O–3d TMs interaction would induce 3d TM segregation to the surface, migrating further in the surface layer to form oxidized 3d TM islands. We find that Pt (111) with the atomic dispersed 3d TM in surface layers is highly active for CO oxidation via bi-functional mechanism. The interplay between structure and reaction environment as well as effect on the catalytic activity is highlighted.

Energetic and Kinetic Competition on the Stability of Pd13 Clusters: Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:Material stability is the focus on both experiments and calculations, which includes the energetic stability at the static state and the thermodynamic stability at the kinetic state. To show whether energetics or kinetics dominates on material stability, this study focuses on the Pd13 clusters, because of their observable magnetic moment in experiment. Energetically, the CALYPSO searching method and first-principles calculations find that Pd13(C2) is the ground state at 0 K while the static frequency calculations demonstrate that the icosahedron Pd13(Ih) becomes more favorable on free energy as temperature increases. However, their magnetic moments (8 μB) are not in agreement with the experimental value (<5.2 μB). Kinetically, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal that Pd13(C3v) (6 μB) has supreme isomerization temperature and the other 11 low-lying isomers transform to Pd13(C3v) directly or indirectly, demonstrating that Pd13(C3v) has the maximum probability to be observed in experiment. The magnetic moment difference between experiment (<5.2 μB) and this calculation (6 μB) may be due to the spin multiplicities. Our result suggests that the magnetic moment disparity between theory and experiment (in Pd13 clusters) originates from the kinetic stability.

However, for neutral ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}$ and positively charged ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{+1}$ clusters, the binding energies of the ${\mathrm{I}}_{h}$ and ${\mathrm{D}}_{5d}$ structures are quite close to that of the ${\mathrm{D}}_{3d}$ structure. The small distortion from the icosahedron in the ${\mathrm{D}}_{3d}$ structure is consistent with the prediction from the collision-induced dissociation experiment on positively charged ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}^{+1}$ cluster. The structural distortion in the charged clusters and the bonding feature in the neutral icosahedral ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{13}$ cluster are discussed. In addition, all the clusters in the present study are found to be magnetic and show small magnetic moments.
