Abstract:Engineering material structures at the atomic level is a promising way to tune the physicochemical properties of materials and optimize their performance in various potential applications. Here, we show that the lithiation-induced amorphization of layered crystalline Pd 3 P 2 S 8 activates this otherwise electrochemically inert material as a highly efficient hydrogen evolution catalyst. Electrochemical lithiation of the layered Pd 3 P 2 S 8 crystal results in the formation of amorphous lithium-incorporated palladium phosphosulfide nanodots with abundant vacancies. The structure change during the lithiation-induced amorphization process is investigated in detail. The amorphous lithium-incorporated palladium phosphosulfide nanodots exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction with an onset potential of −52 mV, a Tafel slope of 29 mV dec −1 and outstanding long-term stability. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the tuning of morphology and structure of Pd 3 P 2 S 8 (for example, dimension decrease, crystallinity loss, vacancy formation and lithium incorporation) contribute to the activation of its intrinsically inert electrocatalytic property. This work provides a unique way for structure tuning of a material to effectively manipulate its catalytic properties and functionalities.

Abstract:Nanoporous Fe -Pd alloy with metastable face -centered cubic (fcc Fe -Pd) phase is prepared by electrochemical dealloying as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The nanoporous fcc Fe -Pd alloy achieves an overpotential of 58 mV at 10 mA cm -2 in 1 M KOH, outperforming those of stable body -centered cubic Fe -Pd alloy (bcc Fe -Pd) and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Density functional theory calculation reveals that the metastable fcc structure can tailor the coordination environment and electronic structure of Pd active sites in Fe -Pd alloy. As a result, the d -band center of Pd active site shifts away from the Fermi level, which weakens the Pd -H interaction and reduces the energy barrier of water dissociation. In addition, the fcc Fe -Pd exhibits good mechanical properties, which maintains the catalytic performance in the deformation state. This work broadens the idea for designing and preparing HER catalysts via metastable phase structure design.

Abstract:The efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a key role in accelerating sustainable H-2 production from water electrolysis, but its large-scale applications are hindered by the high cost of the state-of-the-art Pt catalyst. In this work, submonolayer Pt was controllably deposited on an intermetallic Pd3Pb nanoplate (AL-Pt/Pd3Pb). The atomic efficiency and electronic structure of the active surface Pt layer were largely optimized, greatly enhancing the acidic HER. AL-Pt/Pd3Pb exhibits an outstanding HER activity with an overpotential of only 13.8 mV at 10 mA/cm(2) and a high mass activity of 7834 A/g(Pd+Pt) at -0.05 V, both largely surpassing those of commercial Pt/C (30 mV, 1486 A/g(Pt)). In addition, AL-Pt/Pd3Pb shows excellent stability and robustness. Theoretical calculations show that the improved activity is mainly derived from the charge transfer from Pd3Pb to Pt, resulting in a strong electrostatic interaction that can stabilize the transition state and lower the barrier.

Abstract:Constructing platinum-like materials with excellent catalytic activity and low cost has great significance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) during electrolysis of water. Herein, palladium nanoparticles (NPs) deposition on the surface of Co NPs using nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) as substrate, denoted as N-ZIFC/CoPd-30, are manufactured and served as HER electrocatalysts. Characterization results and density functional theory calculations validate that Pd-Co heterojunctions with NC acting as "electron donators" promote the Pd species transiting to the electron-rich state based on an efficient electron transfer mechanism, namely the N-C polar bonds induced strong metal-support interaction effect. The electron-rich Pd sites are beneficial to HER. Satisfactorily, N-ZIFC/CoPd-30 have only low overpotentials of 16, 162, and 13 mV@-10 mA cm-2 with the small Tafel slopes of 98 mV/decade, 126 mV/decade, and 72 mV/decade in pH of 13, 7, and 0, respectively. The success in fabricating N-ZIFC/CoPd opens a promising path to constructing other platinum-like electrocatalysts with high HER activity.
Modulating Charge Accumulation via Electron Interaction for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution: A Case of Fabricating Palladium Sites on ZnIn 2 S 4 Nanosheets

Abstract:It is desirable to regulate charge migration synergistically via atomic level decoration because it can construct active sites with both thermodynamic and kinetic advantages in photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution. Here, a mild cation exchange-mediated strategy was applied to anchor palladium (Pd) cations in the ZnIn2S4 nanostructure, achieving an outstanding H2 evolution rate of 1236.4 μmol h–1 (λ ≥ 420 nm) accompanied by an apparent quantum efficiency of 60.06% (λ = 420 nm). Pd dopants act as both active sites and surface chemical state modulators, which help to balance *H adsorption thermodynamically. More importantly, in situ electron spin resonance and in situ XPS analysis reveal that the synergistic electron interaction brought by the Pd–S structure constructs an efficient transfer channel, leading to more delocalized photocarriers to the active sites for H2 evolution reaction. A feasible strategy is proposed in this study to improve the performance of photocatalysts from the viewpoint of Pd cation exchange. Simultaneously, synergistic electron interaction is verified to modulate charge accumulation at Pd substitution sites, providing substantiation and unique insights into the electronic structure modification of photocatalysts.

Abstract:Understanding hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation in palladium is the key to utilizing palladium-based materials for hydrogen storage, hydrogen separations, and electrochemical hydrogen evolution and CO2 reduction catalysis. Here, we combine in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and coulometry measurements with density functional theory calculations to provide complementary insights on the dynamics of hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation under electrochemical conditions. By employing multimodal in situ characterization, we demonstrate that the interplanar d-spacing and the hydrogen/palladium ratio are decorrelated under certain conditions. Additionally, there is a clear hysteresis in the electrode potentials where the beta-phase of palladium hydride forms and disappears. Computed energetics of hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation predict this hysteresis. These calculations indicate that the potential-driven absorption of subsurface hydrogen during intercalation and oxidation of surface hydrogen during deintercalation could contribute to the observed hysteresis. These results suggest that surface processes during hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation are important, providing additional mechanistic understanding that is complementary to bulk phase transition theory. This multimodal in situ characterization and computational study provides new insights into hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation in palladium electrodes, which could lead to improvements in palladium-based materials needed in a sustainable energy economy.

Abstract:Rational control of the components of noble metal alloys is paramount for achieving satisfactory electrocatalytic performances. Though transition metals are commonly used to modify noble metals, many potential elements remain to be explored. Here, we interstitially modulate hydrogen atoms into RhPd nanoparticles to boost the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The obtained stable RhPd-H nanoparticles exhibit pronounced alkaline HER activity with a small overpotential of 36.6 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 35.3 mV dec-1. The surface electronic state, bond distance, and coordination number of the Rh and Pd atoms are significantly influenced by the presence of interstitial hydrogen atoms. These modifications give RhPd-H nanoparticles a desirable hydrogen adsorption free energy, thus accelerating the hydrogen gas production. We further demonstrate that the interstitial hydrogen atom modulation strategy to improve the HER activity is universal for other Pd-based alloy nanostructures. This work presents a powerful strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts for the HER and beyond.

Abstract:Pd is a versatile catalyst in various hydrogen-related catalytic applications; however, it typically exhibits low activity in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as too strong Pd-H bonding makes the electronic desorption of H adatoms (Had) hardly occur. We herein report a selective etching-deposition approach to implant trace Pd atoms in the near-surface region of Ag nanocrystals, forming a heteratomic-rich Pd-Ag structure on Ag surface. This near-surface dilution of Pd atoms can dramatically facilitate the electronic desorption of Had. As a result, this approach enhances the electrocatalytic HER activity of Pd catalysts about 14 times with excellent performance durability, approaching the high level of Pt catalysts. While enhancing the catalytic performance, this atomic implantation strategy allows the substantial reduction of material costs. This work thus represents a step toward the high-performance, low-cost catalyst design through near-surface lattice engineering.
Chemically Activating Tungsten Disulfide via Structural and Electronic Engineering Strategy for Upgrading the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Both improving the intrinsic activity and activating basal plane sites of the layered metal dichalcogenides are desirable to enhance their electrocatalytic performance for energy storage and conversion. Herein, we present palladium (Pd)-doped tungsten disulfide (WS2) epitaxially sheathed around linear tungsten oxide for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Pd doping is evidenced to tune the electronic structure of WS2 for activating basal sites of WS2, while the unique core–shell structure facilitates charge transfer. The as-prepared Pd-WS2/W3O with 5.65 wt % Pd content exhibits a small overpotential of only 54 mV at −10 mA cm–2 and superior stability in the acidic electrolyte, which are superior to that of the 5 wt % Pt/C benchmark and are unprecedented in the reported WS2-based electrocatalysts. Theoretical results have revealed that Pd substituting for W in coordination with four S atoms is thermodynamically stable, and the in-plane S atoms adjacent to the doped Pd represent new catalytic active centers for promoting hydrogen adsorption. Abstract:Palladium (Pd)‐based materials have attracted increasing attentions as a kind of novel candidate catalysts for many electrocatalytic reactions to replace classic platinum (Pt) catalysts, especially in the fuel cell‐related electrocatalysis. However, the requirement of high activity and stability toward further practical applications makes the development of Pd‐based catalysts cease to advance. Combining alloying and structure‐controlled strategies has well addressed this challenge by optimizing the adsorption/desorption behaviors toward reaction intermediates. Herein, the recent advances of rational structural designs in terms of tuning the dimensionalities of Pd‐based nanoalloys are overviewed. To further enhance the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity, several advanced strategies, including intermetallics, doping, defects, surface, and interface engineering, are presented to engineer the electronic and/or physical properties of Pd‐based electrocatalysts. Using typical electrocatalytic reactions as probes, the significance of structural regulation of Pd‐based nanocrystals on the enhanced electrocatalysis is demonstrated. Finally, several possible trends and challenges for future advanced research directions are presented. It is anticipated that the rational structural regulation can make promising Pd‐based catalysts touch the ceiling of electrocatalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:Recently, constructing low-cost, high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting remains a difficult challenge to break the bottleneck. Here we design an excellent interfacial engineering tactics to enhance the HER performance of Pd-based bimetallic phosphide nanoparticles by codoping of transition metal (Fe, Co and Ni) elements on carbon nanofibers (CNF). The optimized PdFeP@CNF possesses the increase active sites and large exchange current density (j0) which exhibits the highest active HER performance with the lowest overpotentials of 13.2, 40.8, 77.6 and 120 mV at current densities of 10, 100, 200 and 400 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, respectively. Moreover, PdFeP@CNF also shows fabulous stability for 100 h with no decrease at the current density. It is found that interfacial-bond-induced electron between Pd and transition metal phosphides can optimize the intrinsic activity then accelerate HER performance. This protocol provides a new approach to fabricate bimetallic phosphide nanoparticles for optimizing its catalytic performance.

Abstract:The intercalation of H into Pd-based nanocatalysts plays a crucial role in optimizing the catalytic performance by tailoring the structural and electronic properties. We herein present a comprehensive review about the recent progress of interstitial hydrogen atom modified Pd-based nanocatalysts for various energy-related electrocatalytic reactions. Before systematically manifesting the great potential of Pd-based hydrides for electrocatalytic applications, we have briefly illustrated the synthesis strategies and corresponding mechanisms for the Pd-based hydrides. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion about the fundamentals and functions of H intercalation in tailoring their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Subsequently, we focus on the widespread application of Pd-based hydrides for electrocatalytic reactions, with the emphasis on the role of H intercalation played in determining electrocatalytic performance. Finally, the future direction and perspectives regarding the development of more efficient Pd-based hydrides are also manifested.

Palladium Hydride with High-Index Facets for Enhanced Methanol Oxidation.

Abstract:Nobel metal catalysts with high-index facets feature a high density of steps and kink sites, which bring about high activity but could be unstable during the electrocatalytic process. Doping with interstitial hydrogen atoms is a unique and effective way to regulate the electronic structure of the host materials. The formation of hydride also helps to stabilize the active sites on the surface of catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the conformal doping of H atoms into the Pd nanostructure with preferential exposure of {730} facets, forming concave nanocubes of palladium hydride. Compared to the palladium counterparts, the palladium hydride catalysts show enhanced activity and stability in electrocatalytic methanol oxidation, and the structural differences between the Pd and PdH catalysts are revealed by XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our work presents a powerful strategy for designing durable catalysts with high performance by combining high-index facet with interstitial atom doping.

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a key reaction in hydrogen production through water electrolysis. Platinum (Pt) is the best-known element for HER catalysis. Due to the scarcity of Pt, the development of non-Pt nanocatalysts is desired to achieve broad scale implementations. Here we demonstrate that the PdCu nanostructure containing an intermetallic B2 phase (PdCu-B2) shows a smaller Tafel slope, higher exchange current density, and lower overpotential for HER compared to commercial Pt/C in acidic conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the improved HER performance in acidic conditions can be attributed to the decrease in the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) on the compressed intermetallic PdCu-B2, shifting the HBE to a more optimal position even compared to Pt/C. Operando Stable Palladium Hydride Nanoclusters Anchored on Tungsten Carbides Mediate Reverse Hydrogen Spillover for Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis holds great promise for green hydrogen production, but suffering from high loading of platinum-group metals (PGM) for large-scale deployment. Anchoring PGM-based materials on supports can not only improve the atomic utilization of active sites but also enhance the intrinsic activity. However, in practical PEM electrolysis, it is still challenging to mediate hydrogen adsorption/desorption pathways with high coverage of hydrogen intermediates over catalyst surface. Here, operando generated stable palladium (Pd) hydride nanoclusters anchored on tungsten carbide (WCx) supports were constructed for hydrogen evolution in PEM electrolysis. Under PEM operando conditions, hydrogen intercalation induces formation of Pd hydrides (PdHx) featuring weakened hydrogen binding energy (HBE), thus triggering reverse hydrogen spillover from WCx (strong HBE) supports to PdHx sites, which have been evidenced by operando characterizations, electrochemical results and theoretical studies. This PdHx-WCx material can be directly utilized as cathode electrocatalysts in PEM electrolysis with ultralow Pd loading of 0.022 mg cm-2, delivering the current density of 1 A cm-2 at the cell voltage of ~1.66 V and continuously running for 200 hours without obvious degradation. This innovative strategy via tuning the operando characteristics to mediate reverse hydrogen spillover provide new insights for designing high-performance supported PGM-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Currently, platinum (Pt)/carbon support composite materials have tremendous application prospects in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, one of the primary challenges for boosting their performance is designing a substrate with the desired microstructure. Herein, the intact hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) were prepared via template method. Based on the morphology variation of the as-prepared HCSs-x, we conjectured that the polydopamine (PDA) core was generated first and then slowly grew into a complete overburden (SiO2@PDA). Afterward, Pt atomic clusters were anchored on the outer shells of HCSs-4 to construct composite electrocatalysts (Pty/HCSs-4) by a chemical reduction method. Due to the low charge-transfer resistance, the HCSs have a large electrochemical surface area and provide a continuous electron transport pathway, boosting the atom utilization efficiency during hydrogen production and release. The synthesized Pt2.5/HCSs-4 electrocatalysts exhibit excellent HER activity in acidic media, which can be ascribed to the compositional modulation and delicate structural design. Specifically, when the overpotential is 10 A g-1, the overpotential can achieve 92 mV. This work opens a new route to fabricate Pt-based electrocatalysts and brings a new understanding of the formation mechanism of HCSs.

Abstract:Hydrogen obtained through the electrolysis of water is a potential solution to the growing demand of human society for energy. In addition, water electrolys is generates less environmental pollution than fossil energy sources. However, the preparation of highly active and low-cost electrocatalysts remains a key challenge. Here, we report a facile and inexpensive method to prepare palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) supported on aminated (-NH2) metal-organic frameworks (MOF). The obtained electrocatalyst (Pd@Uio-66-NH2) exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), featuring an ultralow overpotential (34 mV at 10 mA cm-2), small Tafel slope (41 mV dec-1), and superior stability in acid electrolyte. Systematic characterization demonstrated that -NH2 can effectively stabilize palladium acetate as the Lewis base. Meanwhile, the strong interaction between the lone pair electrons and the d-orbital ensures that the Pd atoms are uniformly distributed in the MOF material, inhibiting the agglomeration of metal NPs in the reaction. This strategy provides an avenue to prepare inexpensive and highly active catalysts for HER in acidic media.

Abstract:<p>Various kinds of amorphous materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, metal oxides, and metal phosphates, have demonstrated superior electrocatalytic performance compared with their crystalline counterparts. Compared to other materials for electrocatalysis, noble metals exhibit intrinsically high activity and excellent durability. However, it is still very challenging to prepare amorphous noble‐metal nanomaterials due to the strong interatomic metallic bonding. Herein, the discovery of a unique thiol molecule is reported, namely bismuthiol I, which can induce the transformation of Pd nanomaterials from face‐centered‐cubic (fcc) phase into amorphous phase without destroying their integrity. This ligand‐induced amorphization is realized by post‐synthetic ligand exchange under ambient conditions, and is applicable to fcc Pd nanomaterials with different capping ligands. Importantly, the obtained amorphous Pd nanoparticles exhibit remarkably enhanced activity and excellent stability toward electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in acidic solution. This work provides a facile and effective method for preparing amorphous Pd nanomaterials, and demonstrates their promising electrocatalytic application.</p>

Cyanogel-Induced Facile Synthesis of Palladium Hydride for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Palladium hydride (PdHx) is one of the well-known electrocatalytic materials, yet its synthesis is still a challenge through an energy-efficient and straightforward method. Herein, we propose a new and facile cyanogel-assisted synthesis strategy for the preparation of PdH0.649 at a mild environment with NaBH4 as the hydrogen source. Unlike traditional inorganic Pd precursors, the unique Pd-CN-Pd bridge in Pdx[Pd(CN)4]y ⋅ aH2O cyanogel offers more favourable spatial sites for insertion of H atoms. The characteristic three-dimensional backbone of cyanogel also acts as a support scaffold resulting in the interconnected network structure of PdH0.649. Due to the incorporation of H atoms and interconnected network structure, the PdH0.649 achieves a high half-wave potential of 0.932 V, a high onset potential of 1.062 V, and a low activation energy, as well as a long-term lifetime for oxygen reduction reaction. Theoretical calculation demonstrates a downshift of the d-band centre of Pd in PdH0.649 owing to the dominant Pd-H incorporation that weakens the binding energies of the *OH intermediate species. Zn-air batteries (ZAB) based on PdH0.649 exhibits high power density, competitive open circuit voltage, and good stability, exceeding that of commercial Pt black. This work not only opens up a new avenue for the development of high-efficiency Pt-free catalysts but also provides an original approach and insight into the synthesis of PdHx.
Boosting Acidic Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics Induced by Weak Strain Effect in PdPt Alloy for Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers

Abstract:The PdPt2L with a weak strain effect exhibits superior hydrogen evolution performance over PdPtML with strong strain effect. In situ/operando technologies and theoretical calculations suggest that PdPt2L exhibits faster adsorption and desorption kinetics of hydrogen intermediates over PdPtML and shows the smallest apparent activation energy, indicating that the weak strain effect contributes to reduce reaction energy barrier and accelerate reaction kinetics. Strain engineering is an effective strategy for manipulating the electronic structure of active sites and altering the binding strength toward adsorbates during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the effects of weak and strong strain engineering on the HER catalytic activity have not been fully explored. Herein, the core‐shell PdPt alloys with two‐layer Pt shells (PdPt2L) and multi‐layer Pt shells (PdPtML) is constructed, which exhibit distinct lattice strains. Notably, PdPt2L with weak strain effect just requires a low overpotential of 18 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2 for the HER and shows the superior long‐term stability for 510 h with negligible activity degradation in 0.5 M H2SO4. The intrinsic activity of PdPt2L is 6.2 and 24.5 times higher than that of PdPtML and commercial Pt/C, respectively. Furthermore, PdPt2L||IrO2 exhibits superior activity over Pt/C||IrO2 in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers and maintains stable operation for 100 h at large current density of 500 mA cm−2. In situ/operando measurements verify that PdPt2L exhibits lower apparent activation energy and accelerated ad‐/desorption kinetics, benefiting from the weak strain effect. Density functional theory calculations also reveal that PdPt2L displays weaker H* adsorption energy compared to PdPtML, favoring for H* desorption and promoting H2 generation.
