Abstract:Optical anticounterfeiting plays a vital role in information security because it can be recognized by the naked eye and is difficult to imitate. Herein, a hydrophilic modified upconversion nanoparticle (M-UCNP)-integrated bilayer inverse opal photonic crystal (IOPC) film was designed in which the luminescent M-UCNPs were deposited on the surface of the optimized bilayer structure with double photonic stop bands. The structure which can modulate light to produce structural colors can also enhance the upconversion luminescence (UCL) to improve the anticounterfeiting effect synergistically. On the one hand, the reflection colors from green to blue were observed in the specular angles on the front (540-layer) of the film. Meanwhile, the scattering colors under nonspecular angles from red to blue on the back (808-layer) appeared in the natural light. On the other hand, the bilayer structure in which the 808-layer functions as a "secondary excitation source" to improve the intensity of the excitation light on M-UCNPs and the 540-layer reflects the emission light of the M-UCNPs to enhance the UCL intensity endows the film with good night vision ability. Finally, the dual-mode structural colors and enhanced UCL of the patterned film work together to realize triple anticounterfeiting in banknotes.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) structural color films with 3D inverse opal structure have been prepared by Bingtao Tang and co-workers (article number 1701351). The iridescent plastic films show excellent durability and can be patterned easily. The patterns exhibit six distinct color states when the viewing angles increased from 5° to 45° due to the strong angle-dependency effect which makes the film a higher security anti-counterfeiting material.

Abstract:Multimodal and switchable cellulose nanocrystal‐derived luminescent films integrate four optical states for advanced anti‐counterfeiting. Strong circularly polarized luminescence emission, high absolute quantum yield, and polarization‐sensitive chiro‐optical variation behaviors could promote its application in chiroptical devices, optical detectors, visual protection, and chiral sensing. Designing a sustainable security model that carries multilevel information with numerous optical states will significantly enhance anti‐counterfeiting abilities to deter counterfeits, ranging from artworks, currencies, and foods to medicines, but is enormously challenging. Herein, ambient‐friendly, large‐area, quadruple‐level, and chiral luminescent materials are prepared by incorporating lanthanide complexes wrapped in poly(ethylene glycol) matrix into chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films through a co‐assembly strategy. Due to the regulation of the chiral nematic structures, the composite films enable full‐color structural colors and tunable fluorescence. Notably, the brightest fluorescent film radiates right‐handed circularly polarized luminescence with an asymmetric factor over −0.36, a lifetime up to 510 μs, and an absolute quantum yield up to 66.7%. More interestingly, a fascinating chiro‐optical behavior ranging from azure to khaki can be controlled by a polarizing filter at given 0° and 90° rotation angles. This anti‐counterfeiting system showcases the comprehensive properties of bright and responsive photoluminescence, quadruple and convertible color, and flexible and solvent‐resistant abilities. This CNC‐derived photonic material can act as the multimodal security label on a model banknote, which greatly facilitates its development for practical applications.

Abstract:Iridescent and metallic structural colors originating from 3D photonic crystals (3DPCs) based on Bragg's law of diffraction have attracted considerable attention in recent years. The distinctive optical properties of the material promise tremendous potential in anticounterfeiting fields. However, the poor durability and device-assisted detection of 3DPCs still limit the material's practical application. To overcome these inherent limitations, a novel iridescent flexible polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) plastic film with a 3D inverse opal (3DIO) structure is prepared for the anticounterfeiting of banknotes. The excellent durability of the plastic film is due to the intrinsic robust properties of PVDF resin. Patterns can be easily printed on the plastic films by pressing method. The patterned colored PVDF film changes into six distinct color states when the viewing angle increases from 5 degrees to 45 degrees, and the color switching requires no external stimuli, which makes the plastic films a higher security-level material. Given their excellent mechanical properties, the colored films can serve as an ideal candidate for anticounterfeiting materials.

Abstract:Counterfeiting and forgery have caused enormous economic loss and many safety concerns, and many approaches have been employed for anti-counterfeiting. However, most of these approaches suffer intrinsic issues such as replicability, environmental sustainability, or the requirement of professional equipment to authenticate. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) chiral photonic films prepared by evaporation induced self-assembling display iridescent structural colors, circular dichroism, and unique fingerprint texture in microsize, which are promising for anti-counterfeiting. However, the application of CNC films in anti-counterfeiting are severely limited by their brittleness and nonuniformity. Herein, CNC chiral photonic micro-flakes facilely prepared via ultrasonication of CNC films preserve the optical characteristics of CNC chiral photonic films, and can be mixed with polymer matrices to fabricate flexible films or coatings for practical anti-counterfeiting and identification. The anti-counterfeiting characteristics of CNC chiral photonic micro-flakes can be authenticated by an inspection with naked eyes, using 3D glasses, and further with a polarized optical microscope. Therefore, CNC chiral photonic micro-flakes provide a non-replicable, environmentally friendly, easy-to-authenticate, and practical approach for multilevel anti-counterfeiting and identification.

Abstract:Anticounterfeiting materials are used to distinguish real banknotes, products, and documents from counterfeits, fakes, or unauthorized replicas. However, conventional anticounterfeiting materials generally exhibit a single anticounterfeiting function, resulting in a low level of security. Herein, a novel anticounterfeiting nanocomposite is demonstrated with numerous prominent security features. The nanocomposite is fabricated by doping upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) in a photoresponsive azobenzene-containing polymer (azopolymer). Because of the cis–trans photoisomerization of the azopolymer, the nanocomposite exhibits photoinduced reversible color changes suitable for anticounterfeiting applications. Additionally, the hard nanocomposite can be converted to a rubber-like soft solid by light irradiation. Imprinted microstructures are fabricated on the photosoftened nanocomposite, which result in photonic colors. Moreover, polarization-dependent structures are fabricated on the nanocomposite via photoinduced orientation for encryption. Importantly, UCNPs in the nanocomposite emit visible light upon excitation by near-infrared light, enabling the observation of various anticounterfeiting structures with high contrast. An advantage of the anticounterfeiting nanocomposite is that the security features can be observed by the naked eye for quick discrimination and can be analyzed using laboratory equipment for higher accuracy. The anticounterfeiting nanocomposite is easily processed on paper, glass, and plastic, which demonstrates its potential anticounterfeiting functions for banknotes, wines, and medicines.

Abstract:The anti-counterfeiting label with multiple fluorescent colors plays an important role in information encryption and decryption. It is urgent to develop new materials for improving the security level of secret information. In this study, novel lanthanide (Ln)-based nanopapers (Ln-nanopapers, Ln = Eu and Tb) were prepared by Ln metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) self-assembling on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxide (TEMPO) cellulose nanofibrils (tCNFs). Due to ligand energy absorption, hetero Ln-nanopapers exhibited high efficiency and brightness in characteristic luminescence and color tuning. Based on the adjusting energy absorption mode of hetero Ln-nanopapers, we selectively lit up Eu 3+ (red emission) and Tb 3+ (green emission) or [Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ ] (yellow emission), respectively. And, using the characteristic absorption mode of Ln 3+ ions can effectively avoid the influence of fluorescent brightener on anti-counterfeiting performance. In addition, the characteristic absorption and emission spectra of Ln 3+ ions were obtained by using the reversible energy level transition ( 7 F J ↔ 5 D k ) of Ln 3+ ions, which could be used for mirror-like encryption. The Ln-nanopapers realizes the advanced anti-counterfeiting with adjustable color, selective lighting and visual recognition.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) hybrid materials with numerous optical states have great potential as anti-counterfeiting labels and information encryption materials. However, it is challenging to construct multicolor emitting materials with tunable behaviors, which can dramatically enhance anti-counterfeiting abilities. Here, free-standing composite films with vivid multi-structural colors and dual-emitting fluorescence are successfully fabricated through a host-guest coassembly strategy. The lanthanide complex and an aggregation-induced emission molecule (tetraphenylethylene derivative, TPEC) are selected as luminescent guests, which are integrated into the chiral nematic structure of CNCs. The obtained photonic films display broadband reflection across the visible spectrum, which may be attributed to the chiral nematic domains with variations in the helical pitches and helical axis orientations. Under 254 nm excitation, the film exhibits bright red emission, while blue-green emission switching occurs under 365 nm excitation. The broad reflection band of the film covers both the green and red fluorescent emission centers, and right circularly polarized luminescence emission with different dissymmetry factors is produced due to the selective reflection of the left chiral nematic structure. A large glum value up to -0.21 at 600 nm was realized. Additionally, CNC-based materials with tailored shapes are further used in anti-counterfeit tags and decorative applications.

Abstract:Counterfeit items are growing worldwide, affecting the global economy and human health. Anticounterfeiting tags based on a physical microstructure or chemical materials have enjoyed long-term commercial success due to their visualization and inexpensive production. However, conventional anticounterfeiting tags can be readily imitated. Herein, we have overcome this limitation by assembling colloidal nanospheres and two luminescent micromaterials into a composited photonic crystal (PhC) and achieved massive scale-up fabrication of multilevel anticounterfeiting PhC films in just several minutes of thermal rolling. The fabricated PhC film exhibits three optical states, including angle-dependent structural color (reflectivity = 66%) under white light, emits green light under 980 nm light, and emits red light under ultraviolet light. Multilevel anticounterfeiting colorful images were obtained by further use of masking templates, which integrate colors from both physically colored microstructures and chemical luminescent materials. Besides, the thermal-rolling process also shows excellent feasibility for assembling microunits with different sizes into high-quality functional PhC films.

Abstract:The unique brilliant and angle-independent structural colors of morpho butterfly wings were derived from the multilayer interference, diffraction, and scattering of light with a composite structure including ordered and quasiamorphous arrays. Inspired by the biological heterostructure of ordered and quasiamorphous arrays in the wings, a bilayer inverse heterostructure (BLIHS) containing ordered array layers inverse structure (OALIS) and quasiamorphous array layers inverse structure (Q-AALIS) of polyvinylidene fluoride were successfully prepared through the template method. The BLIHS films selectively displayed iridescent structural color derived from Bragg diffraction of OALIS, whereas the color states transform to noniridescent color because of Q-AALIS just by rotating the sample. Furthermore, the patterning process could be realized by using the spray-coating method on the BILIS films as quasiamorphous array layers. By virtue of this novel photonic structure, the switch between hiding and displaying patterns could be easily realized by changing the viewing angles, and the as-prepared films exhibited inherent excellent durability, which is crucial to their potential for practical applications as anticounterfeiting materials.
Concealed fluorescent anti-counterfeiting paper prepared by loading perovskite and lead-metal-organic framework on cellulose fibers

Abstract:Counterfeiting has caused great concern all over the world. What's more, the fluorescent materials play an important role in technological research and development for high-security. In this work, lead-metal-organic framework (Pb-MOF) and perovskite (MAPbBr3) were used in papers to achieving fluorescence counterfeiting. Pb-MOF, as the template or precursor of MAPbBr3, were in-situ generated on the surface of cellulose fibers (CFs) to preparing into hand sheets (Pb-MOF@CFs). Through the analysis of experimental results, it was found that ligands, reaction systems, addition sequences of drugs, time, etc. would affect the deposition of Pb-MOF on the surface of CFs. Using CH3NH3Br (MABr) as the anti-counterfeiting ink to write on Pb-MOF@CFs, the orange writing leaped across the paper, which caused by Pb in Pb-MOF chemically reacting with MABr forming MAPbBr3. The orange writing displayed green fluorescence under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp excitation. The orange writing with green fluorescence could be extinguished and reconstructed, which had promise for reuse. In addition, fluorescent security papers (MAPbBr3@Pb-MOFs@CFs) were prepared by immersing Pb-MOF@CFs in MABr solution. The fluorescence of MAPbBr3@Pb-MOFs@CFs opened when the surface of it was scraped under 365 nm ultraviolet lamp. This unique fluorescence property was very important in improving the security of products. Consequently, the ongoing research on perovskite and MOFs materials is of great significance.

Abstract:Cholesteric cellulose films exhibiting an adjustable reflection wavelength across the entire visible range were obtained through the application of ultrasound treatment to a suspension of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prior to casting. The influence of both low and high intensity ultrasound power on the structural color of iridescent films was systematically investigated, along with an elucidation of the mechanism behind helical pitch regulation. The findings reveal that low ultrasonic power applied to the CNC suspension has minimal impact on the structural color of the CNC film, primarily enhancing the dispersion of CNC. On the other hand, high ultrasonic power applied to the CNC suspension can effectively adjust the structural color thanks to not only improving the dispersion of CNCs suspensions, but also altering the morphology and size of the CNCs. More importantly, co-friendly cellulosic photonic pigments with tunable structural color can be easily obtained utilizing the fragility of iridescent films for applications such as anti-counterfeiting labels, nail modification and decorative coatings and so on, thereby demonstrating considerable potential for practical utilization.

Abstract:The research on composite materials with rainbow color (structural color) and ultraviolet excitation characteristics (fluorescence) is the development direction of the new generation of functional photonic engineering materials. Herein, composite materials composed of hollow SiO 2 photonic crystals (PCs) with nanometer thickness and PEGDA gel containing graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were prepared to achieve fluorescence regulation effect and thus apply in multi-level intelligent anti-counterfeiting. Due to the SiO 2 shell thickness of 20-41 nm, the Bragg diffraction law explained that the material underwent secondary refraction, resulting in a wide photonic band gap (PBG). On the other hand, due to the comparison of refractive index between air ( n =1) and composite material ( n =1.46), the transmittance of the composite materials were only 21% -26%, indicating strong refractive ability. Therefore, we constructed a PC structure with a wide photonic bandgap (PBG) to provide better wavelength selectivity and coverage range, which would significantly increase the effect of structural color on fluorescence. Based on the unique quantum dot size effect of GQDs, we also investigated the fluorescence enhancement effect with 157 nm FWHM located on PC materials. Therefore, artificial design and control of both fluorescence enhancement and fluorescence suppression had been achieved through multi-level regulation of structural color. We further utilized these properties to create multi-level anti-counterfeiting verification patterns, such as a 3×3 digital encoding matrix. The authenticity of the product information must be verified through stepwise identification under specified conditions. This intelligent anti-counterfeiting technology offers a novel approach to safeguard information security.

Abstract:Amorphous arrays assembled from colloidal microspheres are a way to obtain angle-independent structural colors. Here, we utilized the silane functionalized carbon quantum dots (SiCDs) by incorporating them into the Stöber reaction to fabricate Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /SiCDs nanospheres with a core-shell structure. ACAs were constructed on commercial printing paper using Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /SiCDs nanoparticles as structural units by simple permeation assembly. Macroscopically, the prepared ACAs exhibits the magnetic properties of Fe3O4, while under sunlight, it displays bright, angle-independent structural colors. Under ultraviolet light, the array shows significant fluorescent luminescence. This enables the presentation of multidimensional information under varying magnetic and lighting conditions. By adjusting the thickness of the outer SiO 2 /SiCDs composite layer, the optical properties and magnetism can be easily controlled. Moreover, due to the strong light absorption capability and high refractive index of Fe3O4, the digital patterns constructed with Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /SiCDs nanospheres demonstrate excellent multi-level anti-counterfeiting characteristics, even under water erosion. The magnetic properties of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /SiCDs nanospheres, along with their distinct display characteristics under different optical environments, suggest their wide applicability in the fields of color multifunctional anti-counterfeiting pigments, bioimaging, and sensing displays.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based chiral nematic films have recently received attention due to their unique photophysical properties. However, their fragility and single structural color mode (birefringence) restricts their further development. Herein, a flexible optoelectronic, chiral, CNC films was reported composed of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and CNCs produced by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). Due to weak interactions between CQDs and CNCs, which limit molecular sliding, the optimal tensile strength and curvature reached 65.5 MPa and 2 × 10 2 , respectively. In addition, these products retained not only the structural color of cellulose chiral films in the birefringent mode, but also introduced fluorescence in the CQD ultraviolet excitation mode. Related work also addressed the issue of cellulosic chiral film fragility and provided a new method for their production.

Abstract:The widespread forgery in all kinds of paper documents and certificates has become a real threat to society. Traditional fluorescent anti-counterfeiting materials generally exhibit unicolor display and suffer greatly from substitution, thus leading to a poor anti-counterfeiting effect. In this work, unseen but significant enhanced blue down-conversion emission from oleic acid-stabilized lanthanide-doped fluoride nanocrystals is first present and the mechanism is proposed and validated. This not only endows these nanocrystals with dual-mode fluorescence, but also offers a simplified synthesis approach for dual-mode fluorescent nanocrystals involving no further complicated assembly or coating procedures, unlike the traditional methods. Furthermore, by changing the host/dopant combination or the content of dopant, these nanocrystals can exhibit simultaneously multicolor up-conversion emission under excitation at near-infrared light and unalterable blue down-conversion emission under ultraviolet light. A preliminary investigation of their anti-counterfeiting performance has been made, and the results indicate that this color tuning capability and high concealment makes these nanocrystals behave in a similar way to chameleons and can provide a strengthened and more reliable anti-counterfeiting effect.

Abstract:Photoluminescent materials have been applied worldwide in anticounterfeiting and security fields due to their unique performance of better security, easy identification, and difficulty of duplication. Herein, a facile, green, and low-cost strategy to fabricate biomass-based composites composed of lanthanide rare earth ions-doped nanocrystals and cellulose fibers for anticounterfeiting application was presented. The photo luminescent materials were prepared via in situ chemical deposition of rare earth ions onto bleached hardwood pulp cellulose fibers (bhpFibers) surface using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as coupling agent, forming bhpFibers-PVP@LaF3:Eu3+ composites. The bhpFibers-PVP@LaF3:Eu3+ composites showed excellent luminescence, and their fluorescence intensity can be simply controlled by varying the addition of the right amount of lanthanum (La3+) and europium (Eu3+) ions in aqueous medium. Furthermore, the composites have been used as blocks to form photoluminescence paper via a suction filtration procedure. The as-prepared paper possessed excellent luminescence, high flexibility, well writable and printable properties. Moreover, the whole procedure was carried out in a mild environment without toxic reagents. This simple, green, and low-cost technology presented has advantages of wholesale production of biomass-based photoluminescent materials for anticounterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Utilizing advanced multiple channels for information encryption offers a powerful strategy to achieve high-capacity and highly secure data protection. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) offer a sustainable resource for developing information protection materials. In this study, we present an approach that is easy to implement and adapt for the covalent attachment of various fluorescence molecules onto the surface of CNCs using the Mannich reaction in aqueous-based medium. Through the use of the Mannich reaction-based surface modification technique, we successfully achieved multi-color fluorescence in the resulting CNCs. The resulting CNC derivatives were thoroughly characterized by 2D HSQC NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Notably, the optical properties of CNCs were well maintained after modification, resulting in films exhibiting blue and red structural colors. This enables the engineering of highly programmable and securely encoded anti-counterfeit labels. Moreover, subsequent coating of the modified CNCs with MXene yielded a highly secure encrypted matrix, offering advanced security and encryption capabilities under ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths. This CNC surface-modification enables the development of multimodal security labels with potential applications across various practical scenarios.
