Abstract:In nature, sophisticated functional materials are created through hierarchical self-assembly of nanoscale motifs, which has inspired the fabrication of man-made materials with complex architectures for a variety of applications. Herein, a kinetic study on the self-assembly of spindle-like micelles preassembled from polypeptide graft copolymers is reported. The addition of dimethylformamide and, subsequently, a selective solvent (water) can generate a "reactive point" at both ends of the spindles as a result of the existence of structural defects, which induces the "polymerization" of the spindles into nanowires. Experimental results combined with dissipative particle dynamics simulations show that the polymerization of the micellar subunits follows a step-growth polymerization mechanism with a second-order reaction characteristic. The assembly rate of the micelles is dependent on the subunit concentration and on the activity of the reactive points. The present work reveals a law governing the self-assembly kinetics of micelles with structural defects and opens the door for the construction of hierarchical structures with a controllable size through supramolecular step polymerization.

Abstract:The crystallization-driven self-assembly of polymers based on semicrystalline poly(epsilon-caprolactone) cores is currently an area of high interest on account of their well-known biocompatibility and biodegradability, yet a comprehensive understanding of coil-crystalline-coil type triblock copolymer assembly behavior with respect to this core chemistry is yet to be realized. Herein, we demonstrate the simple preparation of well-defined tuneable 1D and 2D structures based on poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) triblock copolymers of different block ratios synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. In this report, the assembly of PCL-based amphiphiles in various solvents was investigated to tune the morphology and size of the assemblies with well-defined 2D platelets and long cylinders produced when using long soluble coronal blocks or under good solvent conditions. By contrast, truncated short fibers were obtained for less soluble PCL-containing block copolymers or under poor solubility conditions for the core block as a consequence of the increasing amount of nuclei formed in the crystallization process. Furthermore, the length of PCL-based 1D nanostructures could be controlled by tuning self-assembly conditions where the micelles' lengths varied from 93 to 1200 nm with narrow dispersities. This easy assembly methodology greatly simplifies the lengthy procedure required to prepare biodegradable 1D and 2D nanostructures from PCL with tuneable sizes, which demonstrate great potential as drug-delivery vehicles in the realm of biomedicine.
Supramolecular Depolymerization of Nanowires Self-Assembled from Micelles

Abstract:Supramolecular polymerization has been a fascinating frontier of supramolecular chemistry in fabricating well-defined hierarchical nanostructures. However, the reverse process, that is, supramolecular depolymerization in which superstructures disassemble into subunits, is far less explored. In particular, the mechanism and kinetics of supramolecular depolymerization have not yet been reported. In this work, we discovered a thermal-induced supramolecular depolymerization of nanowires formed by supramolecular step-growth polymerization of preassembled micelles. With increasing temperature, the intermicelle interaction between the micellar subunits is broken, resulting in depolymerization of the nanowires into micellar subunits. Accompanying the supramolecular depolymerization, chain transfer between the subunits occurs. A theoretical model was proposed to reveal the mechanism and kinetics of the supramolecular depolymerization. It was found that the depolymerization behavior obeys the rules of random depolymerization. The present work could provide useful information for understanding the underlying principles of supramolecular degradation. In addition, the temperature-induced supramolecular depolymerization of hierarchical nanostructures may find potential applications in biomedical fields.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough a great deal of unique nanostructures were already obtained from polymer self-assemblies in terms of conventional parameters, the self-assembly under the confinement is still not well understood. Here, dissipative particle dynamics simulations were used to explore the self-assemble behaviors of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements. First several unusual morphologies, such as multilayer onion, coupled helix, and stacked lamella, were distinguished from the total 210 simulations. Second, the influences of three important parameters (block sequence, wall selectivity, and spherical radius) on the morphologies were discussed in detail. Finally, the dynamics evolution of several typical aggregates was examined. This simulation enriches micelle morphologies for the self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements and is helpful to understand the formation of valuable nanostructures from linear ABC terpolymers.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymerization of nanoscale particles has been considered as an effective route to prepare hierarchical nanostructures with controlled geometry and functions. However, so far, less is known about its mechanism, especially the polymerization kinetics which is fundamentally Decrease important for the controllable synthesis of hierarchical Temperature structures. In the present work, we discovered a temperature-induced supramolecular step-growth polymerization which can provide a simple and robust route for preparing one-dimensional hierarchical nanowires. The polymerization units are spindlelike micelles self-assembled from amphiphilic poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate)-graft-polyethylene glycol) (PBLG-g-PEG) graft copolymers. Because of the imperfect coverage of PEG grafts on PBLG cores at both ends of the micelles, structural defects appear. At low temperatures, PBLG tends to be more hydrophobic, and resultantly, these defects become reactive and induce polymerization. Kinetic studies revealed that at low temperatures and high micelle concentrations, the polymerization rate becomes relatively faster. The present work demonstrates a new kind of supramolecular polymerization and its reaction kinetic mechanism. The obtained results could provide a guidance for the controllable construction of hierarchical structures.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymerization of nanoparticles is attracting considerable attention for preparing one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures with controllable geometries and promising properties. However, so far, little is known about the supramolecular copolymerization of polymeric micelles, including the general rules and polymerization kinetics. Herein, we demonstrate a supramolecular copolymerization of micelles with various activities into supramolecular chains with controllable lengths and sequences including random, block, and alternate. It is also found that micelles with extremely low activity can act as supramolecular chain stoppers to terminate the polymerization. Since accurate statistical data on supramolecular copolymerization is crucial for revealing the mechanism and building a theoretical model, we propose a machine learning-based image recognition method. This method can precisely differentiate various micellar subunits in the supramolecular copolymer chains. A theoretical kinetic model is proposed, and the kinetic studies reveal that diffusion of the micelles plays a dominant role in supramolecular copolymerization. This work enriches the supramolecular polymerization of micelles and provides theoretical guidance for the engineering of 1D nanostructures with controllable structures.

Abstract:The self-organization of pre-assembled aggregates is an efficient stepwise strategy for fabricating nanostructures with a second level of hierarchy. Herein, we report that anisotropic spindle-like micelles, self-assembled from polypeptide graft copolymers with rigid backbones, can serve as ideal pre-assembled subunits for constructing one-dimensional materials with hierarchical structures. By adding organic solvents and dialyzing against water, reactive points can be generated at the ends of the spindle-like micelles, which subsequently drive the anisotropic micelles to grow as rods in a chain and eventually self-assemble into hierarchical nanowires in a stepwise manner. The second self-assembly step is a hierarchical process that resembles step polymerization. Hierarchical structures can be precisely synthesized by this new type of polymerization. These nanostructures can be tailored by the activity of the reactive points, which depends on the nature of the solvent and the molecular architecture.

Abstract:Self-assembled block copolymer (BCP) nano-structures are of important utility across a wide field. Here, we report a solution-surface sequential self-assembly approach to tailor amphiphilic BCPs in solution and subsequently on a substrate into complex nanostructures. Spherical micelles that formed in solution transform on a substrate sequentially into toroidal micelles, concentric toroidal micelles, and ring clusters upon alternating annealing in solvents that selectively swell the core but poor for the corona. This process is found in both diblock and triblock copolymer systems and appears to be independent of the nature of substrate and gravity. Thus, BCPs micelles with simple shapes can be further manipulated on a surface in a flexible fashion to constructed novel nanostructures.

Abstract:Amphiphilic DNA block copolymers, which are composed of DNA and polymeric blocks linked by covalent bonds, are regared as novel building units for creating hierarchically self-assembled superstructures at the mesoscales. However, insufficient understanding of the formation mechanisms and the regulation rules of self-assembled superstructures seriously impedes their potential utility in the field of nanomedicines. In this work, we build a coarse-grained model for amphiphilic block copolymers consisting of DNA blocks in selective solution, and propose a stepwise self-assembly strategy of DNA block copolymers on the basis of Brownian dynamics simulations. It is computationally demonstrated that the amphiphilic DNA block copolymers self-assemble into spherical micelles due to the solvophobic effect of polymeric blocks in the first-step of coarse-grained simulations. Driven by the hybridization of complementary DNA blocks, the binary mixtures of nano-sized micelles in the second-step of simulations are programmed to co-assemble into a series of hierarchical superstructures such as network-like, branched-like, star-like and linear topologies. The DNA-programmed superstructures of micelles can be regulated by finely tuning the sequence of DNA blocks, the stoichiometric ratio of binary mixtures of micelles and the reduced temperature of simulation system. The simulation results turn out to be in agreement with the available experimental findings. Furthermore, it is corroborated that the DNA-programmed superstructures of micelles have a close connection with the coordination number of micelles and the hybridization fraction of DNA blocks at the microscopic level.
Living Growth Kinetics of Polymeric Micelles on a Substrate

Abstract:Living growth of micelles on the substrate is an intriguing phenomenon; however, little is known about its growth kinetics, especially from a theoretical viewpoint. Here, we examine the living growth kinetics of polymeric micelles on a hydrophobic substrate immersed in an aqueous solution. The block copolymers first assemble into short cylinder seeds anchored on the substrate. Then, the small aggregates of block copolymers in the solutions fuse onto the active ends of the anchored seeds, leading to micelle growth on the substrate. A theoretical model is proposed to interpret such living growth kinetics. It is revealed that the growth rate coefficient on the substrate is independent of the copolymer concentration and the multistep feedings; however, it is significantly affected by the surface hydrophobicity. Brownian dynamics simulations further support the proposed growth mechanism and the kinetic model. This work enriches living assembly systems and provides guidance for fabricating bioinspired surface nanostructures.

Abstract:Synthetic copolymers of molecular systems serve as an inspiration for creation of one-dimensional copolymer-like superstructures via coassembly of anisometric nanoparticles. In contrast to the covalent and molecular copolymers, the details of formation mechanisms of copolymer-like superstructures, as well as the factors determining their length and the sequences of arranged nanoparticles, are still poorly understood. Herein, we propose a joint theoretical-computational framework to probe into the coassembly mechanism and kinetics of binary mixtures of patchy nanoparticles. By applying the coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, it is demonstrated that the coassembly of patchy nanoparticles markedly resembles many aspects of molecular step-growth copolymerization, and the sequences of nanoparticles inside the copolymer-like superstructures can be finely regulated by the relative activity and the initial ingredient of patchy nanoparticles as well as the coassembly strategy. A quantitatively copolymerization-like model is developed to account for the coassembly kinetics of patchy nanoparticles and the sequence distribution of arranged nanoparticles, all governed by the elaborate design of lower-level building units. The jointly theoretical and simulated studies offer mechanistic insights into the copolymerization-like kinetics and the sequence prediction for the coassembly of binary mixtures of patchy nanoparticles, paving the way toward the rational design of copolymer-like superstructures with various sequences and functionalities.

Abstract:Precise control of size and dimension is the key to constructing complex hierarchical nanostructures, particularly multi-dimensional hybrid nanoassemblies. After adding rod-coil block copolymers into the seed solution, the copolymers incorporated onto the 2D seed edges to generate junction points. Several cylindrical arms were formed from the elongation of junction points, resulting in 2D-1D multi-dimensional hybrid micelles. The structural transition of the micelle core from smectic-like (disk) to cholesteric-like (cylindrical arms) LC packing manners benefit from the fluidity of LC. Such a seeded-growth behavior simultaneously exhibits the features of heterogeneous nucleation and homogenous epitaxy growth. Intriguingly, the arms generate in sequence, and its junction position is in the para-position first, followed by ortho-position or meta-position, resembling the difference in the substituent activities on the benzene ring. These theoretical findings are consistent with experimental results, and provide explanations to some unaddressed issues in experiments. The obtained results also reveal that the hybrid micelles are a good stabilizer due to their high surface area and distinctive suspension behaviors.

Abstract:The ability to design and fabricate highly ordered superstructures from nanoscale particles remains a major scientific and technological challenge. Patchy nanoparticles have recently emerged as a novel class of building units to construct functional materials. Using simulations of coarse-grained molecular dynamics, we propose a simple approach to achieve soft nanoparticles with a self-patchiness nature through self-assembly of tethered copolymers with a sequence of inner solvophilic and outer solvophobic blocks. As building units, the patch-like nanoparticles are directed to further assemble into a rich variety of highly ordered superstructures via condensation-coalescence mechanisms. The growth kinetics of the superstructures obeys the kinetic model of the step-growth polymerization process. Our simulations also demonstrate that the intermediate patch-like nanoparticles and the final assembled superstructures can be rationally tuned by changing the number and the composition of the tethered copolymer chains. This strategy of copolymer functionalization conceptually enables the design and fabrication of highly ordered superstructures of nanoparticle ensembles with new horizons for promising applications in soft nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Abstract:We report a three-step tandem polymer self-assembly, from PS-b-P4VP macromolecules to vesicles, from vesicles to chains, and from chains to stacked bowls. Once aggregated, the soft vesicles and the hydrogen-bonded interface favor the gradual increase of the contact area, thus promoting concerted optimization toward stacked bowls. The continual structural modification opens a new route for exploring sophisticated synthetic control and complex shapes.
In Situ Nucleation‐Growth Strategy for Controllable Heterogeneous Supramolecular Polymerization of Liquid Crystalline Block Copolymers and Their Hierarchical Assembly

Abstract:The self-assembly morphologies of subunits are largely governed by thermodynamics, which plays a less important role in dimensional control. Particularly for one-dimensional assemblies from block copolymers (BCPs), the negligible energy difference between short and long ones imposes great challenges in length control. Herein, we report that by incorporating additional polymers to induce in situ nucleation and trigger the subsequent growth, controllable supramolecular polymerization driven by mesogenic ordering effect could be realized from liquid crystalline BCPs. The length of the resultant fibrillar supramolecular polymers (SP) is controlled by tuning the ratio between nucleating and growing components. Depending on the choice of BCPs, the SPs can be homopolymer-like, heterogeneous triblock, and even pentablock copolymer-like. More interestingly, with insoluble BCP as a nucleating component, amphiphilic SPs are fabricated, which can undergo spontaneous hierarchical assembly.

Abstract:The self-assembled nanostructures of a high-molecular-weight rod-coil block copolymer, poly(styrene-block-(2,5-bis[4-methoxyphenyl]oxycarbonyl)styrene) (PS-b-PMPCS), in p-xylene are studied. The cylindrical micelles, long segmental cylindrical micelle associates, spherical micelles, and spherical micelle associates are observed with increased copolymer concentration. The high molecular weight of PS leads to the entanglement between PS chains from different micelles, which is the force for supramolecular interactions. Short cylindrical micelles are connected end-to-end via this supramolecular chemistry to form long segmental cylindrical micelle associates, analogue to the condensation polymerization process, with direction and saturation. On the other hand, spherical micelles assemble via supramolecular chemistry to form spherical micelle associates, yet without any direction due to their isotropic properties.

Dissipative Particle Dynamics Simulations of Toroidal Structure Formations of Amphiphilic Triblock Copolymers

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic assembly of toroidal micelle structures of amphiphilic triblock copolymers in dilute solution has been investigated using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The amphiphilic molecule is represented by a coarse-grained model, which contains hydrophilic and hydrophobic particles. Some microstructures of complex morphology having toroidal micelles have been observed in the simulations; the toroidal micelle formation is in accordance with the theoretical prediction of the toroidal structure in cylindrical micelle suspensions by Pochan et al. (Science 2004, 306, 94). These findings are very interesting, and these complex morphologies enrich our knowledge of the potential products obtained from the self-assembly of block copolymers.

Abstract:A triblock bottlebrush copolymer, poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide)-block-(polyacrylate-graft-(polystyrene-alternate-poly(L-lactide)))-block-poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMA-b-(PA-g-(PS-alt-PLLA))-b-PDMA), was prepared with an amphiphilic coil-rod-coil macromolecular structure based on the combination of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC), and ring-opening polymerization (ROP). For the formation of the triblock bottlebrush copolymer, RAFT was used to prepare the well-defined triblock copolymer main chain of PDMA-b-PA-b-PDMA. CuAAC was then employed to graft the PS side chains onto the reactive PA block to form the triblock bottlebrush copolymer PDMA-b-(PA-g-PS)-b-PDMA with PS side chains The in situ ROP of L-lactide to graft PLLA from PA block finally produced the triblock bottlebrush copolymer of PDMA-b-(PA-g-(PS-alt-PLLA))-b-PDMA with V-shaped side chains of PS and PLLA. In this macromolecule, PDMA formed the hydrophilic coil blocks while the bottlebrush polymer of PA-g-(PS-alt-PLLA) formed the hydrophobic rod block. Self-assembly of the amphiphilic PDMA-b-(PA-g-(PS-alt-PLLA))-b-PDMA was subsequently investigated in selective solvents. Due to the unique coil-rod-coil molecular structure, this triblock bottlebrush copolymer self-assembled into sheet-like micelles or vesicles in the selective solvents of THF/methanol or THF/ethanol, respectively. In these self-assemblies, the coil hydrophilic PDMA block formed the dispersing shell to keep their dispersion while the rigid hydrophobic bottlebrush block aggregated into the sheet-like cores to maintain stability of the self-assemblies. The PS and PLLA side chains with V-shaped structure along the middle blocks microphase-separated inside the aggregated micellar sheet or vesicle wall, in which the isolated PLLA microdomain was surrounded by the continuous PS microdomain Furthermore, the selective hydrolysis of PLLA microdomain left the nanopores inside the cores of micelles and vesicles. It has been demonstrated the hydrolysis rate was heavily depended on the morphology of the self-assemblies, where the hydrolysis of PLLA microdomains of sheet-like micelles was much faster than that of the corresponding vesicles.

Abstract:Self-organization of nanoparticles is an efficient strategy for producing nanostructures with complex, hierarchical architectures. The past decade has witnessed great progress in nanoparticle self-assembly, yet the quantitative prediction of the architecture of nanoparticle ensembles and of the kinetics of their formation remains a challenge. We report on the marked similarity between the self-assembly of metal nanoparticles and reaction-controlled step-growth polymerization. The nanoparticles act as multifunctional monomer units, which form reversible, noncovalent bonds at specific bond angles and organize themselves into a colloidal polymer. We show that the kinetics and statistics of step-growth polymerization enable a quantitative prediction of the architecture of linear, branched, and cyclic self-assembled nanostructures; their aggregation numbers and size distribution; and the formation of structural isomers.
