Abstract:Co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) coupled with co-product aqueous phase (AP) recirculation has huge potential to improve the hydrochar production. In this study, three model compounds, namely wheat straw cellulose (cellulose, Ce), xylan (hemicellulose, He), and soya-protein (protein, Pr) underwent Co-HTC with AP recirculation to study the hydrochar formation behavior by means of HTC experiments and products characterization using elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Pyrolyzer-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS), GC-MS, and wastewater properties analysis. The results show that both Co-HTC and AP recirculation contributed to the increased hydrochar formation, and combination of both resulted in about 10~20% more hydrochar yield. Co-HTC improved hydrochar formation by introducing new reactions such as Maillard reaction which mainly occurred between amino acids and saccharides, while AP recirculation enhanced HTC by catalytic effect from accumulated AP components such as acids and by the presence of more AP-derived hydrochar precursors. Co-HTC was more favorable than AP recirculation to increase hydrochar yield and was also much more effective on nitrogen accumulation in hydrochar. Future mechanistic studies can be carried out to identify the key intermediates of Maillard reaction to mediate the trade-off between hydrochar yield and characteristics, such as the contents of N and O
