Abstract:Enhancing light-matter interaction in cavity quantum electrodynamics has aroused widespread interests in on-chip quantum information processing. Here, we propose a hybrid nanotoroid-nanowire system to enhance photon-exciton interaction. A nanoscale gap is formed by placing a dielectric nanowire close to a dielectric nanotoroid, where the coupling coefficient between photon and emitter can achieve 5.55 times of that without nanogap. Meanwhile, the cavity loss and spontaneous emission of the emitter will remain at a small value to guarantee the realization of strong coupling. The method might hold promise for the research of nanophotonics, quantum optics, and novel optical devices.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate a cavity quantum electrodynamics system in which a high-Q whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonator interacts with multiple diamond nanocrystals each containing a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center. With a tapered fiber waveguide coupling the WGMs, the transmission spectrum of the system exhibits a twofold-splitting phenomenon, where the first fold of splitting originates from the nanocrystals' Rayleigh scattering and the second fold stems from the NV center dipole coupling with the WGMs. The interacting system can serve as a platform to generate quantum entanglement between two NV centers embedded in distant diamond nanocrystals. Our further study reveals that the Rayleigh scattering of the nanocrystals plays a positive role in generating entanglement in some cases. The analytical results show that the relatively strong scattering leads to a larger concurrence for the fixed dipole-cavity detunings. This investigation may hold potential for solid-state quantum information processing applications.

Abstract:Quasi-transverse-electric and -transverse-magnetic fundamental whispering gallery modes in a polymer-coated silica microtoroid are theoretically investigated and demonstrated to possess very high-quality factors. The existence of a nanometer-thickness layer not only evidently reduces the cavity mode volume but also draws the maximal electric field's position of the mode to the outside of the silica toroid, where single quantum dots or nanocrystals are located. Both effects result in a strongly enhanced coherent interaction between a single dipole (for example, a single defect center in a diamond crystal) and the quantized cavity mode. Since the coated microtoroid is highly feasible and robust in experiments, it may offer an excellent platform to study strong-coupling cavity quantum electrodynamics, quantum information, and quantum computation.

Abstract:We theoretically describe and study coupling between two whispering-gallery-mode microcavities through a side coupled fiber taper. The two microcavities can couple to each other bidirectionally with only one fiber taper waveguide due to the modal coupling between a pair of whispering-gallery modes traveling in opposite directions. By choosing appropriate physical parameters, some interesting spectra, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency-like coherent transmission and band-like reflection, can be obtained in such a system. Slow light is discussed in this paper as a direct application of the coupled microresonator structure. This structure also has potential application in coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:The strong confined electromagnetic field in the micronano photonic structures brings new opportunities for the research of interaction between light and matter. By designing optical modes, light can be controlled to realize reversible or inreversible energy exchange between photons and emitters at the micronano scale. Here, we review the basic principles of the interaction between light and matter in cavity quantum electrodynamics and their recent advances in strong coupling based on micronano photonic structures such as plasmon nanostructures, whispering gallery resonators and photonic crystals. These works opening the research of quantum nanophotonics will have great influence on the on-chip quantum devices and quantum informations.

Abstract:We study the Rayleigh scattering induced by a diamond nanocrystal in a whispering-gallery-microcavity-waveguide coupling system and find that it plays a significant role in the photon transportation. On the one hand, this study provides insight into future solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics aimed at understanding strong-coupling physics. On the other hand, benefitting from this Rayleigh scattering, effects such as dipole-induced transparency and strong photon antibunching can occur simultaneously. As a potential application, this system can function as a high-efficiency photon turnstile. In contrast to B. Dayan et al. [Science 319, 1062 (2008)], the photon turnstiles proposed here are almost immune to the nanocrystal's azimuthal position.

Abstract:Electromagnetic vacuum engineering in nanostructures can be used to tailor the light-emitter interaction at the subwavelength scale. Here, by embedding a nanocavity quantum electrodynamic system in an evanescent vacuum, we theoretically investigate high-dielectric constant enhanced photon-exciton coupling. The evanescent depth decreases as the dielectric constant of the embedding medium increases. Thus, more confined evanescent fields are obtained owing to faster exponential decay of an evanescent wave, which is used to obtain a larger coupling coefficient enhancement. The enhanced coupling coefficients are also demonstrated by changing the Ag nanorod size and the gap distance between the nanoparticle and plate. To significantly enhance the absolute value of the coupling coefficients, the Ag cylindrical nanorod can be replaced by the Ag pyramid or bipyramid. Evanescent vacuum induced strong photon-exciton coupling would have a significant influence on the fundamental physics of the subwavelength-confined cavity quantum electrodynamics and on-chip quantum information processing and scalable quantum networks. Abstract:Strong coupling between single quantum emitter and dielectric nanoparticle has not been achieved due to large scattering loss of dielectric nanoparticle. Here we propose strong photon-exciton coupling mechanism under topological protection. In hybrid two-dimensional topological photonic crystal structure containing gap dielectric nanoantenna, owing to the robustness of the topological pattern, the photons originally scattered to the surrounding area can be guided into the edge-state channel, so the linewidth of nanoantenna is greatly narrowed. Simultaneously, the stronger local field in the nanoantenna gap provides a relatively large coupling coefficient. Therefore, strong coupling condition is achieved. Our results demonstrate the potential of dielectric structures as a platform for studying cavity quantum electrodynamics in a single quantum level.

Abstract:With the geometrical optics theory of waveguide and considering quality factor or photon lifetime,general whispering gallery modes resonating condition of large size disk were obtained.The coupling coefficient between the large size disk and waveguide was investigated by the photon tunneling effect.The coupling condition of lithium niobate disk electro-optic modulator under limitation of microwave electrode width was detailed,which quality factor was about 5×105.A push-pull lithium niobate disk modulator which was coupled to a Mach-Zehnder lithium niobate waveguide was proposed to lower further driving-voltage and reduce the device size.

Abstract:An evanescent optical mode existing in various nanophotonic structures always acts as a cavity mode rather than an electromagnetic vacuum in the study of cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED). Here we show that taking the evanescent mode as an electromagnetic vacuum in which the nanocavity is located is possible through the optical mode design. The proposed evanescent vacuum enables us to enhance both the reversible photon-exciton interaction and fluorescence collection. By embedding the custom-designed plasmon nanocavity into the evanescent vacuum provided by a metallic or dielectric nanowire, the photon-exciton coupling coefficient can achieve 4.2 times that in vacuum due to the exponential decay of the evanescent wave, and spontaneously emitted photons with Rabi splitting can be guided by an evanescent wave with a collection efficiency of 47% at most. Electromagnetic vacuum engineering at subwavelength scale holds promise for controlling the light-matter interaction in quantum optics, CQED, and on-chip quantum information.

Abstract:By using CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), we study the effect of cavity quantum electrodynamics on the coupling of the microtoroid cavity. When with whispering gallery (WG) modes, the microtoroid cavity demonstrates high quality factor and small mode volume at visible wavelengths. Accordingly, fiber tapers allow QDs to adhere into the cavity and further permit the control of site-selected coupling. From the luminescence spectra, QDs are modulated effectively by cavity modes. Variable modulations are observed by changing QD coupling conditions. Therefore, based on experimental and theoretical research, strong and tunable Purcell enhancement can be realized by this system.

Abstract:We present and analyze a method where parametric (two-photon) driving of a cavity is used to exponentially enhance the light-matter coupling in a generic cavity QED setup, with time-dependent control. Our method allows one to enhance weak-coupling systems, such that they enter the strong coupling regime (where the coupling exceeds dissipative rates) and even the ultrastrong coupling regime (where the coupling is comparable to the cavity frequency). As an example, we show how the scheme allows one to use a weak-coupling system to adiabatically prepare the highly entangled ground state of the ultrastrong coupling system. The resulting state could be used for remote entanglement applications.
Chiral Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics with Coupled Nanophotonic Structures

Abstract:Up to now it remains challenging to couple photons from a circularly polarized emitter into a photonic structure to simultaneously realize strong photon-emitter interaction and unidirectional propagation locked by local helicity of the optical mode at the nanoscale. In this paper we propose a unique approach that combines a photonic crystal and metallic nanoparticle structure to create nanocavities with both strong local-field intensity and high helicity. In this system the rate of circularly polarized photons emitting into the photonic crystal waveguide reaches 148(gamma 0), which is one order of magnitude larger than that without the nanoparticle, and in the ultranarrow band-edge mode the linewidth of Rabi splitting spectra is about one-tenth of that with the nanoparticle only, both with approximate to 95% of photons propagating unidirectionally along the nanoscale waveguide. We suggest that our paper establishes a nanophotonic interface of chiral quantum electrodynamics for on-chip nonreciprocal quantum light sources, quantum circuits, and scalable quantum networks.

Abstract:In this paper, a scalable photonic crystal cavity array, in which single embedded quantum dots (QDs) are coherently interacting, is studied theoretically. Firstly, we examine the spectral character and optical delay brought about by the coupled cavities interacting with single QDs, in an optical analogue to electromagnetically induced transparency. Secondly, we then examine the usability of this coupled QD-cavity system for quantum phase gate operation and our numerical examples suggest that a two-qubit system with fidelity above 0.99 and photon loss below 0.04 is possible.

Abstract:Optical interference and the related effects are key elements which could exhibit the properties of both classical and quantum optical systems. Usually, the interference between different optical paths may produce intriguing effects, such as the electromagnetically induced transparent (EIT) and so on. In this work, we study the interference effects in directly coupled whispering-gallery mode (WGM) micro-resonators, in which the emergence of EIT and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) could be observed. We find by tuning the coupling strength between the resonators, the modulation phase may control the appearance and disappearance of EIT (EIA). Furthermore, we prove the existence of fast and slow light, and propose a scheme for effective switching between them. This work provides a new strategy for obtaining slow light and quantum storage in the WGM micro-resonators.

Photon blockade in a high-damping cavity via a gain-type coupler

Abstract:We propose a scheme to implement photon blockade in a non-Hermitian circuit quantum electrodynamics (circuit-QED) system where a single-mode cavity interacts with a two-level emitter through virtual photon excitation mediated by a coupler resonator. A damping compensation regime is introduced by the phase-lag arising from the medium mode, thereby the periodic exceptional points (EPs) are observed at which the system achieves gain-damping balance. This regime enables photon blockade to occur within the single-mode cavity with high-damping rate by controlling the gain circuit of the coupler, which breaks the limitation of a low-damping rate for photon blockade under weak drive and relaxes the stringent requirements on the quality of the cavity. The numerical simulations for the second-order correlation function, obtained using reported experimental parameters, exhibit excellent agreement with our analytical results. The findings of this study provide a circuit-QED solution for single-quantum devices based on the high-damping cavities, which is of great significance for integrated quantum computing networks.

Abstract:Optical nanocavities for coherent interfaces usually have their electric field maximum at the center point, which normally benefits interactions with small local quantum emitters. Here, a partial thickness modulation on 2D slab photonic crystal cavities for a cratered cavity mode function to improve nonlocal interactions is proposed. The thickness modulation is applied around the central region, and has little effect on the fringe electric field, which determines the coupling to waveguides or other cavities. Furthermore, the partial modulation enhances the cratered electric field at positions that are distant from the center point. Therefore, interactions with multiple separated emitters are simultaneously enhanced, and the interaction with a large emitter beyond the dipole approximation is also doubled. The improvement of the nonlocal interactions demonstrates a great potential for the cratered cavity mode profile for applications in quantum photonic networks.
