Abstract:Two properly designed columns of orthogonally tilted and spatially varied nano-apertures have been demonstrated to achieve polarization-controlled launching of the localized cosine-Gauss beam, which is a kind of highly localized surface plasmonic wave without diffraction. According to the experimental results, the generated unidirectional propagating plasmonic beam could propagate with a non-diffracting length of up to 57μm as well as the extinction ratio of more than 150. We believe that our proposed device would play an important role in highly compact photonic circuit on-chip with plasmonic wave.
Switchable Phase and Polarization Singular Beams Generation Using Dielectric Metasurfaces

Abstract:Singular beams which possess helical phase wavefront or spatially inhomogeneous polarization provide new freedom for optical field manipulation. However, conventional schemes to produce the singular beams have difficulty in realizing the flexible switch between different singular beams. In this work, we have experimentally demonstrated the capability of dielectric metasurfaces to generate three types of singular beams and switch between them at working wavelength of 1550 nm . We have shown vortex beam and cylindrical vector beam generation with single metasurface and cylindrical vector vortex beam generation with two cascaded metasurfaces. Moreover, experimental demonstration on switching cylindrical vector beam into vortex beam has also been done by combining one quarter-wave plate and a Glan laser polarizer. The experimental results match well with the analysis from the Jones matrix calculations. The average conversion efficiency of cylindrical vector beam to vortex beam was estimated to be 47.7%, which was about 2.3% lower than the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:The finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method was used to simulate the propagation of P polarized light Gaussian beam in a single subwavelength metallic(Ag)slit surrounded by gratings.Because of the effect of surface plasmons wave,slit with symmetric grating can realize symmetric diffraction,and special asymmetric structure can achieve off-angle beaming phenomenon.Through formula Derivation and Helmholtz reciprocity theorem,devices for parallel beam of P polarized light could be designed.With the Gaussian beam's divergence and near-field distribution,the structural parameters of devices for Gaussian beam shrinks by 12%.On the basis of optimizating some other structures parameters,the design of symmetric diffracted and off-angle beaming effect device for 633 nm Gaussian beam were achieved.

Abstract:As one of the recent advances of optics and photonics, plasmonics has enabled unprecedented optical designs. Having a vectorial configuration of surface plasmon field, metallic nanostructures offer efficient solutions in polarization control with a very limited sample thickness. Many compact polarization devices have been realized using such metallic nanostructures. However, in most of these devices, the functions were usually simple and limited to a few polarization states. Here, we demonstrated a plasmonic polarization generator that can reconfigure an input polarization to all types of polarization states simultaneously. The plasmonic polarization generator is based on the interference of the in-plane (longitudinal) field of the surface plasmons that gives rise to versatile near-field polarization states on a metal surface, which have seldom been considered in previous studies. With a well-designed nanohole array, the in-plane field of SPPs with proper polarization states and phases can be selectively scattered out to the desired light beams. A manifestation of eight focusing beams with well-routed polarizations was experimentally demonstrated. Our design offers a new route to achieve the full control of optical polarizations and possibly advance the development in photonic information processing.
Controlling the State of Polarization Via Optical Nanoantenna Feeding with Surface Plasmon Polaritons

Abstract:Optical nanoantennas, usually referring to metal structures with localized surface plasmon resonance, could efficiently convert confined optical energy to free-space light, and vice versa. But it is difficult to manipulate the confined visible light energy for its nanoscale spatial extent. Here, a simple method is proposed to solve this problem by controlling surface plasmon polaritons to indirectly manipulate the localized plasmons. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate an optical rotation device which is a grating with central circular polarization optical nanoantenna. It realized the arbitrary optical rotation of linear polarized light by controlling the retard of dual surface plasmon polaritons sources from both side grating structures. Furthermore, we use a two-parameter theoretical model to explain the experimental results.

Abstract:Controlling Light Propagation Surface plasmons are light-induced collective electronic excitations in a metal that offer the possibility of manufacturing optoelectronic devices at nanometer scale. Before such shrinking can be achieved, the propagation direction and lifetime of the plasmonic excitations have to be controlled (see the Perspective by Miroshnichenko and Kivshar ). Rodríguez-Fortuño et al. (p. 328 ) show how this is done using polarized light. Alternatively, using an array of metallic nanoantennae (in this case, slits) patterned into a thin gold film, Lin et al. (p. 331 ) present a further improvement on current plasmonic coupling schemes that has the potential to encode information contained in both the intensity and polarization of light.

Abstract:We study the interaction of focused radially-polarized light with metal nanospheres. By expanding the electromagnetic field in terms of multipoles, we gain insight on the excitation of localized surface plasmon-polariton resonances in the nanoparticle. We show that focused radially-polarized beams offer more opportunities than a focused plane wave or a Gaussian beam for tuning the near- and far-field system response. These results find applications in nano-optics, optical tweezers, and optical data storage.

Abstract:We present a design for tunable directional beaming through a subwavelength metallic double slit surrounded by dielectric surface-relief gratings. On-axis and off-axis beaming can be switched by controlling the incident angle to asymmetrically excite surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that are subsequently coupled out to propagating beams by the two gratings on the left and the right sides of the double slit. Furthermore, the division of optical power into two off-axis beaming directions can be tuned smoothly by varying the incident angle while keeping the total power almost unchanged. The mechanism of this effect is analyzed theoretically and verified using rigorous numerical simulations.

Abstract:Tunable surface plasmon polariton launchers are highly demanded in various applications of nanophotonics for achieving controllable plasmonic signals coupling and multiplexing. Here, a tunable-focusing device with simplified structure is suggested. It consists of an array of nanofootprints. This device allows us polarization-controlled tunable plasmonic directing and focusing on the two-dimensional metallic surface. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the focal position of the excited plasmon field can be flexibly tuned between two distinct positions just by manipulating the incident polarization state. Hence, this nanofootprints structure can serve effectively as controllable plasmonic routers and demultiplexers. It also has promising application prospects in many other fields of optics.

Abstract:The capability to manipulate the polarization state of light at the nanoscale is of paramount importance in many emerging research areas ranging from optical communication to quantum information processing. Gap-surface plasmon (GSP) metasurfaces, which provide advantages and abilities of molding reflected fields, have been demonstrated excellently suited for integration of multifunctional polarization optics into a single device. Here, we establish a versatile GSP metasurface platform based on nanoscale quarter-wave plates (nano-QWPs) that enable efficient circular-to-linear polarization conversion along with the complete phase control over reflected fields. Capitalizing on the nano-QWP design, we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, how resonance and geometric phases can be used in concert to achieve independent and simultaneous phase modulation of both co- and cross-polarized circularly polarized (CP) waves by realizing arbitrary beam steering of co- and cross-polarized CP channels in a broadband near-infrared range. The GSP metasurface platform established in our work provides versatile and flexible solutions to enrich multiple functionalities for diversified metasurface-based polarization optics exploited in modern integrated photonic devices and systems.

Abstract:Polarization is one of the most important properties of light, which is also a typical dimension for light field manipulation. With specially designed meta‐atoms and tailorable phase distribution, metasurfaces have been employed to achieve arbitrary polarization state in linear regime. Moreover, metasurface is also a platform for various types of nonlinear light generation, which can be used to realize an integrated polarized light source combined with its powerful capability of polarization manipulation. Here, a nonlinear plasmonic metasurface that is able to simultaneously realize nonlinear light generation and polarization manipulation is demonstrated. Two separated second harmonic (SH) beams with orthogonal circular polarizations are achieved from a linearly polarized fundamental wave (FW), and illuminated by circularly polarized FW the same nonlinear plasmonic metasurface can generate linearly polarized SH, which can be viewed as an SH quarter‐wave plate. Furthermore, arbitrary elliptical polarized SH can also be obtained from properly designed nonlinear metasurfaces. This design provides a new approach for miniaturized light source for special polarization requirement, which may have potential applications in integrated optics.

Abstract:<p>Plasmonic metasurfaces show great potential to manipulate the wavefront of surface plasmons (SPs) and enable realization of various chip‐level photonic devices. However, the current configurations can merely operate under specific incident polarization state and/or have limitation in independently tuning the phase and amplitude of SPs, although arbitrary incident polarization state is allowed. There is still the lack of a metasurface scheme that not only can couple spatial light waves into SPs under arbitrary polarization states, but also can independently modulate the amplitude and phase of the generated SPs. Here, it is proposed and experimentally demonstrated that double‐lined metallic nanoslits can be well designed to overcome these limitations. Practical metadevices are designed and fabricated for generating polarization‐independent plasmonic Airy beams, near‐field focusing, and intensity‐preserved "lossless" beams, and their excellent performances at 633 nm are characterized with near‐field scanning optical microscope. The presented results will offer opportunities for the practical plasmonic devices and applications based on the plasmonic metasurfaces.</p>

Phase difference and amplitude ratio between SH components can be tailored by adjusting the arm length of SRRs and CSRRs. By introducing spatial offset between adjacent basic supercells, we can achieve phase difference between two orthogonal components and thus realize polarization control of output SH emission and beam splitting at the same time. Abstract:The efficient steering of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) fields is a vital issue in various plasmonic applications, such as plasmonic circuitry. We present a straightforward and efficient method for generating unidirectionally propagating SPP beams with arbitrary amplitude and phase profiles by manipulating Δ-shaped nanoantennas. As an example, a second-order Hermite-Gauss SPP beam is generated with this method. The near-field distribution of the generated SPP beam is experimentally characterized to validate the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Beams with longitudinally continuously varying polarization provide a new application dimension in fields such as optical communication and optical manipulation. The small-sized and multifunctional metasurfaces have been used to generate scalar or vector beams whose polarizations vary along the propagation direction within a single polarization mode. However, dual-mode beams with longitudinally varying polarization can further increase the dimension of manipulation, but they have been rarely explored. Here, we propose a scheme based on the spatial partitioning method for designing dual-mode beams with longitudinally evolving polarization. To validate the proposed scheme, we demonstrate three dual-mode beams generated by all-silicon metasurfaces which have evolving polarization from scalar to vector, scalar vortex to vector vortex, and first-order to second-order cylindrical vector, respectively. The transverse polarization distributions of these beams depend on their longitudinal position. The different focal lengths of the orthogonal circularly polarized components and the design of long focal depth make it possible to change the polarization distribution longitudinally. The optical fields generated based on the proposed scheme are expected to be applied in depth detection and optical manipulation.

Abstract:Light polarization control is a key factor in modern photonics. Recent advances in surface plasmon manipulation have introduced the prospect of more compact and more efficient devices for this purpose. However, the current plasmonic-based polarization optics remain much larger than the wavelength of light, which limits the design degrees of freedom. Here, we present a plasmonic traveling-wave nanoantenna using a gold-coated helical carbon nanowire end-fired with a dipolar aperture nanoantenna. Our nonresonant helical nanoantenna enables tunable polarization control by swirling surface plasmons on the subwavelength scale and taking advantage of the optical spin–orbit interaction. Four closely packed helical traveling-wave nanoantennas (HTNs) are demonstrated to locally convert an incoming light beam into four beams of tunable polarizations and intensities, with the ability to impart different polarization states to the output beams in a controllable way. Moreover, by near-field coupling four HTNs of opposite handedness, we demonstrate a subwavelength waveplate-like structure providing a degree of freedom in polarization control that is unachievable with ordinary polarization optics and current metamaterials.

Abstract:Metasurfaces composed of regularly arranged and deliberately oriented metallic nanoparticles can be employed to manipulate the amplitude, phase and polarization of an incident electromagnetic wave. The metasurfaces operating in the visible to near infrared spectral range rely on the modern fabrication technologies which offer a spatial resolution beyond the optical diffraction limit. Although direct laser writing is an alternative to the fabrication of nanostructures, the achievement of regular nanostructures with deep-subwavelength periods by using this method remains a big challenge. Here, we proposed and demonstrated a novel strategy for regulating disordered plasmonic nanoparticles into nanogratings with deep-subwavelength periods and reshaped nanoparticles by using femtosecond laser pulses. The orientations of the nanogratings depend strongly on the polarization of the femtosecond laser light. Such nanogratings exhibit reflection and polarization control over the reflected light, enabling the realization of polarization sensitive optical memory and color display with high spatial resolution and good chromacity.

Abstract:A broadband integrated waveguide polarization beam splitter consisting of a metal nanoribbon and two dielectric waveguides is proposed and numerically investigated. This surface plasmon based device provides a unique approach for polarization sensitive manipulation of light in an integrated circuit and will be essential for future classical and quantum information processes.

Abstract:The demand for emerging applications at the terahertz frequencies motivates the development of novel and multifunctional devices for the generation and manipulation of terahertz waves. In this work, we report the realization of multifunctional spintronic-metasurface emitters, which allow simultaneous beam-steering and full polarization control over a broadband terahertz beam. This is achieved through engineering individual meta-atoms with nanoscale magnetic heterostructures and, thus, implementing microscopical control over the laser-induced spin and charge dynamics. By arranging the spintronic meta-atoms in the metagrating geometry, the generated terahertz beam can be flexibly steered in space between different orders of diffraction. Furthermore, we demonstrate a simultaneous control over the terahertz polarization states at different emission angles and show that the two control capabilities are mutually independent of each other. The nanoengineered multifunctional terahertz emitter demonstrated in this work can provide a solution to the challenge associated with a growing variety of applications of terahertz technology.

Abstract:We propose a novel V-shaped Ag nanowire structure as a subwavelength polarization beam splitter. When an incident light is focused onto the junction of the two branches, two surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are launched and propagate along the two branches. The polarizations of the emission light from the two ends are always parallel to the directions of the branches and the splitting ratio can be adjusted by changing the polarization of the incident light. The polarization characteristic originates from the fact that only single plasmonic waveguide mode exists in the thin nanowire and high order modes are cutoff. The near-field coupling between the two branches dominates the SPPs launching and the splitting ratio, which are very different with the single nanowire case. The V-shaped nanowire structure will have many potential applications in the integration of plasmonic devices, such as plasmonic router or polarizer.
