Abstract:The neurotoxicity of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is being revealed, and increasing evidence has shown that in addition to the endocrine system, EDCs have the ability to exert multiple influences on animal neural and behavioral systems, especially during development. Thyroid hormones are usually regarded as key factors in determining the neurobehavioral toxicity of EDCs. However, the complex interactions of neural and endocrine signals that determine the effects of EDCs could hardly be interpreted using only one regulatory factor, regardless of thyroid hormones and/or other hormones and neurotransmitters. In this review, we proposed that the neurobehavioral toxicity of EDCs on mature and immature individuals is inevitable because of the unique control of neural and endocrine factors, and their integration should be considered when establishing the mechanisms for the pleiotropic effects of EDCs.
