Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Soliton "molecules", i.e., bound states of two or several solitons, represent a fundamental concept, which manifests itself in various nonlinear systems. They are dynamically similar to chemical molecules, attracting great interest to fundamental studies and offering potential applications (such as multilevel encoding of optical data). Here, the study demonstrates a novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds (DSMC) built as a hybrid bound state of multiple bound soliton pulses carried by two wavelengths in a fiber laser. The DSMCs are maintained by two different binding mechanisms, viz., the self-phase modulation (SPM) interaction between temporal solitons at the same wavelength, mediated by their tails, and the cross-phase modulation (XPM) interaction between solitons at different wavelengths. They also exhibit unique temporal and spectral vibration profiles. Both static DSMCs and ones with robust internal vibrations are generated experimentally in the fiber laser, and numerically as solutions of the corresponding dissipative nonlinear model. The findings reported here expand the concept of soliton molecules and further promote their similarity to chemical molecules. Novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds that are built as hybrid bound states of multiple solitons carried by two different optical wavelengths are demonstrated in mode-locked fiber lasers. The vibration dynamics of DSMCs are experimental and theoretically revealed, suggesting directions for further work in nonlinear fiber optics, as well as using soliton bound states for emulation of molecular dynamics. image

Abstract:A soliton explosion is an instability whereby a dissipative soliton undergoes a sudden structural collapse, but remarkably returns back to its original shape after a short transient. We recently reported the first experimental observation of this effect in a fiber laser (A. F. J. Runge et al., Optica 2, 36 (2015)). Here, we expand on our initial work, presenting a more detailed experimental and numerical study of the characteristics and dynamics of soliton explosions in passively mode-locked fiber lasers. Specifically, we explore different cavity configurations and gain levels, observing and characterizing explosion events using spectral and temporal real-time single-shot techniques. Our results highlight that the explosion characteristics observed in experiments depend critically on the position in the cavity where the output coupler is located. Furthermore, we find that the frequency at which explosions occur can be controlled by adjusting the pump power. We also identify a new kind of ``partial'' explosion, where strong spectral interference fringes appear on the pulse spectra, but a full collapse is avoided. Finally, we perform numerical simulations based on a realistic iterative cavity map, and obtain results that are in good agreement with experimental measurements. Careful analysis of the simulation results provide strong credence to the interpretation that soliton explosions can be linked to a multi-pulsing instability.

Abstract:Nonlinear dissipative systems support pulsating solutions and exhibit many interesting dynamic behaviors. Here, we report various soliton pulsations and explosions in an all-normal dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber laser by utilizing the dispersive Fourier transform technique. By the different soliton dynamics, these phenomena can be classified into single-soliton pulsation and explosion, dual-soliton synchronous and asynchronous pulsation, as well as dual-soliton asynchronous explosion. Solitons exhibit identical periodic fluctuations in the synchronous pulsation while showing the anti-phase behavior in asynchronous pulsation. The dual-soliton asynchronous pulsation might be related to the periodic modulation of the polarization state of solitons. As for the dual-soliton asynchronous explosion, it can be regarded as the asynchronously triggered transient solitons containing periodic explosion through the gain-mediated soliton interactions. These findings may provide new insights into complex dynamics in the field of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:Because of the complexity and difficulty of realizing a multi-wavelength soliton state, reports on its internal dynamic characteristics are scarce. In this study, the switching and periodic soliton explosion processes of the multi-wavelength soliton state in a negative dispersion passively mode-locked fiber laser are realized. The generation of the multi-wavelength soliton state undergoes the process of noise, oscillation, and stable mode-locking, and the splitting and annihilation of solitons with different group velocities directly impact the generation and disappearance of three wavelengths. Positive and negative dispersion lead to different group velocities of solitons. The presence and displacement of solitons with different group velocities cause soliton collisions, which lead to soliton explosions. A soliton experiences relative phase oscillation, chaos, and oscillation, as well as convergence and separation before and after an explosion. With an increase in parameters related to pump power, single-soliton oscillation, multi-wavelength solitons, and chaos are found in experiments and simulations, proving the relevance and reliability between simulation and experimental results. This work promotes the dynamical study of multi-soliton collisions in nonlinear science and the development of chaos theory in multi-comb lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:Synchronised ultrafast soliton lasers have attracted great research interest in recent decades. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the buildup mechanism of synchronised pulses. Here, we report a dynamic analysis of independent and synchronised solitons buildup mechanisms in synchronised ultrafast soliton lasers. The laser comprises an erbium-doped fibre cavity and a thulium-doped fibre cavity bridged with a common arm. Pulses operating at two different wavelengths formed in the cavities are synchronised by cross-phase modulation-induced soliton correlation in the common fibre arm. We find that the whole buildup process of the thulium-doped fibre laser successively undergoes five different stages: continuous wave, relaxation oscillation, quasi-mode-locking, continuous wave mode-locking and synchronised mode-locking. It is found that the starting time of the synchronised solitons is mainly determined by the meeting time of dual-color solitons. Our results will further deepen the understanding of dual-color synchronised lasers and enrich the study of complex nonlinear system dynamics.

Abstract:Optical solitons in ultrafast fiber lasers, as a result of dual balances between dispersion and nonlinearity as well as gain and loss, enable various soliton interactions. Soliton collisions are among the most intriguing soliton interactions, which fuel the understanding for particle-like properties of solitons. Here, we experimentally investigate the transient dynamics of collisions between a two-soliton molecule and a soliton singlet in a mode-locked fiber laser. By means of the dispersive Fourier transform technique, the evolving spectral interferograms of different collision scenarios are measured in real time. In particular, the "quasi-elastic" collision is observed, which shows that the soliton-molecule state remains unaltered after the collision and the group-velocity difference between the soliton molecule and the singlet is changed. It is directly demonstrated that a bond exchange occurs between the colliding solitons. By tuning the intra-cavity polarization controller, the dynamic processes of other collision outcomes, including the annihilation of a soliton in the soliton molecule as well as the formation of a stable unequally spaced soliton triplet, are also revealed. Our work facilitates a deeper understanding of soliton collision dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:The buildup dynamics from noise-seeded relaxation oscillation to harmonic mode-locking (HML) solitons generation have been well investigated in ultrafast fiber lasers. However, the transient multi-soliton dynamics in higher-order HML states are still attractive yet largely unexplored. We reveal here that, the experimental observation of the multi-soliton dynamics including soliton beating dynamics, soliton annihilation, transient bound state, two-soliton resonance state, soliton splitting, and multi-soliton repulsion dynamics are analyzed by the emerging time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique. Particularly, the excessive intracavity energy result in the double-pulse pulsating with transient bound states and three types of soliton molecules states can be observed in the earlier and middle part of the transition process. Numerical results further reveal that several similar multi-soliton dynamics operating at stable 2nd and 3rd states could be caused by a fine tuning of the pump power level in a hybrid mode-locked laser. Our results unveil a diverse set of ultrafast transient process in fiber lasers, and open up new ways into obtaining and controlling the generation of high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:The evolution of complex pulse-bunches in a bound-state soliton fiber laser with a MoS2 saturable absorber is observed with increasing pump laser power. The experiment demonstrated that the stable two-soliton bound state with fixed and tight separation was achieved, inducing strong interplay between the two solitons. The fundamental bound-state mode-locking operations were maintained and the pulse train gradually evolved into complex pulse-bunches to balance the accumulated cavity nonlinear effects as the pump power increased. Our results may offer a platform for the commercial development of stable double-pulse laser sources.

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers, which have been widely utilized to generate ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond level, can be regarded as the next-generation laser source due to the advantages of high beam quality, high efficiency, etc. On the other hand, ultrafast mode-locking fiber lasers can provide an excellent platform for observing a variety of nonlinear dynamics. Although some steady state phenomena had been observed theoretically and experimentally, many interesting and important transient dynamics properties can only be theoretically predicted, and some are unpredictable. The main reason is that these ultrafast nonlinear dynamics are unrepeatable and have complex transformation in temporal and spectral domain, which cannot be resolved by the current technologies. In recent years, researchers have proposed time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique [1]-[6] to measure the transient, nonrepeat events. This technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain, thus provide an elegant way to obtain real-time, single-shot spectrum measurements of ultrafast optical phenomena. Up to now, this technique has helped scientists to experimentally resolve the entire formation dynamics [2], [3] and localized transient dynamics of solitons in mode-locked fiber lasers [4]-[6]. Besides, a temporal magnifier technique, also known as time lens, was employed to microimaging the ultrafast phenomena in recent years. This technique has been successfully applied to study the real-time full-field characterization of soliton dynamics in mode-locked laser [7], [8].

Abstract:Sinusoidal spectral filtering (SSF) plays an essential role in dual- and multi-wavelength operations in mode-locked fiber lasers. However, the impact of SSF on the underlying soliton dynamics has not been systematically revealed so far. Herein, we investigate numerically the SSF-based soliton dynamics in mode-locked fiber lasers. SSF could facilitate the formation of dual-wavelength mode locking, and the generation of dual-comb solitons with slightly different group velocities. Pulse shaping based on SSF and gain filtering leads to the non-monotonic relationship between both solitons’ group velocity difference and the cavity gain. In addition, dual-comb soliton mode locking exhibits threshold feature and multi-pulse instability to soliton annihilation and diverse soliton coexistences. Our investigations could shade new light on the SSF-based soliton dynamics and might bring new insights into the laser design and applications.
Dark solitons in the exploding pulsation of the bright dissipative soliton in ultrafast fiber lasers

Abstract:Soliton explosion is an extremely pulsating behavior of the bright dissipative soliton (DS) in ultrafast lasers. By numerical simulation, we find that the dark soliton (DAS) can coexist with the bright soliton during the exploding process. The collapsed temporal structure of the exploding soliton is induced by the DASs. We reveal the birthing, evolving, and decaying of the DASs inside the bright DS. The time-frequency analysis of the exploding soliton helps us better understand the temporal and spectral structures of the exploding soliton, which might be useful for real-time spectroscopy of the coexisting dark and bright solitons during the soliton explosion.

Abstract:Benefiting from ultrafast temporal resolution, broadband spectral bandwidth, as well as high peak power, passively mode-locked fibre lasers have attracted growing interest and exhibited great potential from fundamental sciences to industrial and military applications. As a nonlinear system containing complex interactions from gain, loss, nonlinearity, dispersion, etc., ultrafast fibre lasers deliver not only conventional single soliton but also soliton bunching with different types. In analogy to molecules consisting of several atoms in chemistry, soliton molecules (in other words, bound solitons) in fibre lasers are of vital importance for in-depth understanding of the nonlinear interaction mechanism and further exploration for high-capacity fibre-optic communications. In this Review, we summarize the state-of-the-art advances on soliton molecules in ultrafast fibre lasers. A variety of soliton molecules with different numbers of soliton, phase-differences and pulse separations were experimentally observed owing to the flexibility of parameters such as mode-locking techniques and dispersion control. Numerical simulations clearly unravel how different nonlinear interactions contribute to formation of soliton molecules. Analysis of the stability and the underlying physical mechanisms of bound solitons bring important insights to this field. For a complete view of nonlinear optical phenomena in fibre lasers, other dissipative states such as vibrating soliton pairs, soliton rains, rogue waves and coexisting dissipative solitons are also discussed. With development of advanced real-time detection techniques, the internal motion of different pulsing states is anticipated to be characterized, rendering fibre lasers a versatile platform for nonlinear complex dynamics and various practical applications.

Abstract:Particle-like structures of solitons, as a result of the balance between dispersion and nonlinearity, enable remarkable elastic and inelastic soliton collisions in many fields. Despite the experimental observation of temporal vector-soliton collisions in birefringent fibers, collision dynamics of vector solitons in fiber lasers have not been revealed before, to the best of our knowledge. Here, the real-time spectral evolutions of vector solitons during collisions in a dual-comb fiber laser, which generates vector solitons with slightly different repetition rates, are captured by a time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique. We record the whole process of vector-soliton collisions, including the formation of weak pulses induced by cross-polarization coupling, opposite central wavelength shifts of both vector solitons, distinct intensity redistribution and dissipative energy, and gradual recovery to initial states. Furthermore, extreme collisions with strong four-wave mixing sidebands are observed by virtue of coherent coupling between the orthogonal polarization components of vector solitons. Numerical simulations match well with the experimental observations. The experimental and numerical evidences of vector-soliton collision dynamics could give insight into the understanding of nonlinear dynamics in fiber lasers and other physical systems, as well as the improvement of laser performance for application in dual-comb spectroscopy. Abstract:We experimentally studied the transition dynamics between consecutive multi-pulsing states, specifically the build-up and annihilation of soliton pulses between a double pulsing and a three-pulse state, utilizing the dispersive Fourier transform technique. The birth of an additional pulse in a mode-locked soliton fiber laser in a multi-pulsing regime arises from a dispersive wave-induced narrow-band pulse that experiences strong intensity fluctuations, while the other soliton pulses maintain their shapes. During the decaying process to a double pulsing state, it is observed that all the pulses undergo a unique breathing behavior before settling into a steady state.
