Abstract:Supramolecular polymers with different functionalities have been continuously developed in the past decade because of their indispensable role in soft materials. However, pure organic supramolecular polymers with stable room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission were very rarely reported for the difficulties of synthesis and achieving RTP in solution. Herein, soluble helical supramolecular polymers with circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence were developed via a facile host-guest strategy. Through assembly, a transition from pure fluorescence to almost pure RTP emission was achieved. Adjusting the asymmetry of guest could easily control the chiroptical property of supramolecular polymers. This work provides new opportunities for the design and development of intelligent soft functional soft materials.

Abstract:Constructing ultralong organic phosphorescent materials possessing a high quantum yield is challenging. Herein, assemblies of purely organic supramolecular pins composed of alkyl-bridged phenylpyridinium salts and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) are reported. Different from "one host with two guests" and "head-to-tail" binding, the binding formation of supramolecular pins is "one host with one guest" and "head-to-head," which overcomes electrostatic repulsion and promotes intramolecular charge transfer. The supramolecular pin 1/CB[8] displays afterglow with high phosphorescence quantum yield (99.38%) after incorporation into a rigid matrix, which is the highest yield reported to date for phosphorescent materials. Moreover, multicolor photoluminescence can be obtained by different excitation wavelengths and ratios of host to guest. Owing to the redshift of the absorption, the supramolecular pins are applied for targeted phosphorescence imaging of mitochondria. This work will provide a reasonable supramolecular strategy to achieve redshifted and efficient phosphorescence both in the solid state and in aqueous solution.

Abstract:One-dimensional organic structures with well-oriented -aggregation, strong emission, and ease of processability are desirable for optoelectronic waveguiding devices. Herein, a strategy is developed to attain this objective by self-assembling platinum(II) acetylides into fluorescent supramolecular polymers via cooperative mechanism. The resulting high-molecular-weight supramolecular polymers are capable of forming electrospun microfibers with uniform geometry and smooth surface, which enable light propagation with extremely low scattering loss (0.008dBm(-1)). With the elaborate combination of bottom-up supramolecular polymerization and top-down electrospinning techniques, this work offers a novel and versatile avenue toward high-performance optical waveguiding materials.
Synthesis of Soluble and Fluorescent Hybrid Polymer Using Organic/inorganic Assemblies as Building Blocks

Abstract:A synthetic pathway is introduced to construct fluorescent hybrid polymers with supramolecular assemblies as building blocks. The supramolecular assembly is composed of nanoparticle core of II~IV group semiconductor and organic compound shell containing polymerizable groups. Their homopolymerization and copolymerization with vinyl monomers produce soluble and fluorescent hybrid polymers. Light scattering data show that the polymer from the assembly (2) of CdSe nanoparticle core with mixed organic compounds has an average size of about 310nm in diameter in chloroform; AFM image illustrates that the polymer has an average diameter of 120nm and an average height of 35nm on a mica surface and photoluminescent spectra reveal that the polymer performs an extraordinary enhancement in fluorescence intensity of the semiconductor nanoparticles.

Abstract:A new class of amphiphilic tridentate cyclometalated gold(III) complexes has been designed and synthesized as luminescent supramolecular building blocks. Positively charged trimethylammonium (-CH2NMe3+) containing alkynyl ligands have been incorporated to introduce the electrostatic interactions. The X-ray crystal structures of two of the complexes have been determined, and the existence of π-π interactions between molecules has been observed. Steady-state and time-resolved absorption and emission studies have been carried out to investigate the nature of the excited states. The complexes are found to exhibit self-assembly properties with the assistance of π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions and possibly weak Au···Au interaction, resulting in notable emergence of low-energy absorption bands and luminescence changes. The presence of a large hydrophobic moiety is found to be crucial for the formation of aggregates, especially in polar media where hydrophobic interactions play an important role. The nature of the counterion has been shown to have a significant effect on the extent of self-assembly in different media. Upon aggregation, nanofibers are formed in polar media, while nanorods are observed in nonpolar media in one of the representative complexes. Interestingly, a small modification on the alkynyl ligand resulted in the formation of nanoribbons instead. Intriguing luminescence mechanochromic properties have also been observed. This orthogonal and rational molecular design strategy has been shown to be effective in the construction of gold(III)-based smart and multiresponsive materials.

Abstract:Mechanochromic luminescent materials have received a great deal of attention due to their potential applications in sensors and optoelectronic devices. Meanwhile, the aggregation-induced emission active materials commonly exhibit bright luminescence upon aggregate formation, which is extremely important for preparation of high-contrast mechanochromism materials. On the other hand, it is well-known that pyridine-type ligands are one of the most versatile ligands. Unfortunately, the number of pyridine gold complexes is quite limited, not to mention pyridine-containing gold(I) complexes with aggregation-induced emission or mechanochromic phenomenon. In this work, a new bipyridine-based aggregation-induced phosphorescent emission active gold(I) complex is reported. The novel luminogen exhibits reversible mechanochromism phenomenon with phosphorescent changes between weak green and strong yellow emissions. Moreover, the luminogen shows a significative self-assembly behavior. This work will be beneficial for the exploitation of force-responsive phosphorescent sensor materials with remarkable self-assembly behavior.
Tunable Light-Emission Properties of Solution-Processable N-Heterocyclic Carbene Cyclometalated Gold(III) Complexes for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) cyclometalated gold(III) complexes remain very scarce and therefore their photophysical properties remain currently underexplored. Moreover, gold(III) complexes emitting in the blue region of the electromagnetic spectrum are rare. In this work, a series of four phosphorescent gold(III) complexes was investigated bearing four different NHC monocyclometalated (C^C*)-type ligands and a dianionic (N^N)-type ancillary ligand ((N^N)=5,5'-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(3-(trifluoromethyl)-1 H-pyrazole) (mepzH2 )). The complexes exhibit strong phosphorescence when doped in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) at room temperature, which were systematically tuned from sky-blue [λPL =456 nm, CIE coordinates: (0.20, 034)] to green [λPL =516 nm, CIE coordinates: (0.31, 0.54)] by varying the monocyclometalated (C^C*) ligand framework. The complexes revealed high quantum efficiencies (ϕPL ) of up to 43 % and excited-state lifetimes (τ0 ) between 15-266 μs. The radiative rate constant values found for these complexes (kr =103 -104 s-1 ) are the highest found in comparison to previously known best-performing monocyclometalated gold(III) complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations of these complexes further lend support to the excited-state nature of these complexes. The calculations showed a significant contribution of the gold(III) metal center in the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) of up to 18 %, which was found to be unique for this class of cyclometalated gold(III) complexes. Additionally, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated by using a solution process to provide the first insight into the electroluminescent (EL) properties of this new class of gold(III) complexes.

Abstract:Abstract Developing facile and efficient methods to obtain circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with a large luminescence dissymmetry factor ( g lum ) and fluorescence quantum yield ( Φ Y ) is attractive but still challenging. Herein, supramolecular polymerization of styrylpyrenes ( R / S -PEB) is utilized to attain this aim, which can self-assemble into helical nanoribbons. Benefiting from the dominant CH-π interactions between the chromophores, the supramolecular solution of S -PEB shows remarkable blue-color CPL property ( g lum : 0.011, Φ Y : 69%). From supramolecular solution to gel, the emission color (blue to yellow-green) and handedness of CPL ( g lum : –0.011 to +0.005) are concurrently manipulated, while the corresponding supramolecular chirality maintains unchanged, representing the rare example of color-dependent CPL materials. Thanks to the supramolecular confine effect, the [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction rate of the supramolecular solution is 10.5 times higher than that of the monomeric solution. In contrast, no cycloaddition reaction occurs for the gel and assembled solid samples. Our findings provide a vision for fabricating multi-modal and high-performance CPL-active materials, paving the way for the development of advanced photo-responsive chiral systems.

Abstract:Significance Light-emitting materials have been widely studied for their promising applications in chemical and biological science. Here we report three phenanthrene-21-crown-7 functionalized fluorescent Pt(II) rhomboidal metallacycles which were then converted into fluorescent supramolecular oligomers by reacting with a bis-ammonium linker. One of these constructs shows concentration-dependent fluorescence in a wide color range, where orange emission at high concentration and blue emission at low concentration was observed. Moreover, at a concentration of 29 μM the same ensemble emits white light that has emerged from the integration of the complementary orange and blue color from the metallacycles and linker, respectively. This study shows how light-emitting materials can be obtained by the proper implementation of multiple orthogonal interactions in a single process.

The supramolecular assembly that contains polymerizable groups is used as a starting "monomer." The supramolecular assembly is composed of nanoparticle core of II similar to IV group semiconductor and organic ammonium shell. Polymerization of the assemblies yields soluble composite macromolecules. Light scattering data show that the macromolecule has an average size of about 310 nm in diameter in chloroform; AFM image illustrates that the macromolecule has an average diameter of 120 nm and an average height of 35 nm on a mica surface and photoluminescent spectra reveal that the macromolecule performs an extraordinary enhancement in fluorescence intensity of the semiconductor nanoparticles. These observations suggest that construction of macromolecules with supramolecular assembly as starting monomer may produce generations of materials with novel properties.

Abstract:Abstract Regulating the fluorescent properties of organic small molecules in a controlled and dynamic manner has been a fundamental research goal. Although several strategies have been exploited, realizing multi-color molecular emission from a single fluorophore remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an emissive system by combining pyrene fluorophore and acylhydrazone units, which can generate multi-color switchable fluorescent emissions at different assembled states. Two kinds of supramolecular tools, amphiphilic self-assembly and γ-cyclodextrin mediated host-guest recognition, are used to manipulate the intermolecular aromatic stacking distances, resulting in the tunable fluorescent emission ranging from blue to yellow, including a pure white-light emission. Moreover, an external chemical signal, amylase, is introduced to control the assembly states of the system on a time scale, generating a distinct dynamic emission system. The dynamic properties of this multi-color fluorescent system can be also enabled in a hydrogel network, exhibiting a promising potential for intelligent fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Fluorescent metallosupramolecules have received considerable attention due to their precisely controlled dimensions as well as the tunable photophysical and photochemical properties. However, phosphorescent analogues are still rare and limited to small structures with low-temperature phosphorescence. Herein, we report the self-assembly and photophysical studies of a giant, discrete metallosupramolecular concentric hexagon functionalized with six alkynylplatinum(II) bzimpy moieties. With a size larger than 10 nm and molecular weight higher than 26 000 Da, the assembled terpyridine-based supramolecule displayed phosphorescent emission at room temperature. Abstract:Phosphorescent nanoscale coordination polymer nanoparticles (NCPs) were conveniently synthesized by phosphorescent carboxyl-functionalized iridium complexes as a building block and rare earth Y(III) ions as metallic nodes. They reveal to be uniform nanospheres with average diameter around 200 nm. Multi-color emission from blue to orange was obtained by tuning the ratios of two iridium complexes with energy transfer between them. Abstract:A series of carbazole-containing gold(I) complexes modified with different substituents were successfully designed and synthesized, and their molecular structures were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The aggregation-induced behaviors of these gold(I) complexes were studied by ultraviolet/visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Meanwhile, their mechanical force-responsive emissive properties were also investigated via solid-state photoluminescence spectroscopy. Interestingly, all these gold(I)-based luminogenic molecules were capable of exhibiting aggregation-induced phosphorescent emission phenomena. Furthermore, their solids of three gold(I) complexes displayed contrasting mechano-responsive phosphorescence features. More specifically, trifluoromethyl or methoxyl-substituted luminophores 1 and 3 demonstrated mechanochromic behaviors involving blue-shifted phosphorescence changes, and their mechanoluminochromic phenomena were reversible. However, the solid-state phosphorescence of phenyl-substituted luminophor 2 was not sensitive to external mechanical force.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced luminescence behaviors of polynuclear metal clusters are intriguing but still mysterious to date. Herein, we synthesize a series of Au-8 clusters with different peripheral ligands to investigate their different supramolecular assembly and distinguishable aggregation-induced luminescent behaviors in solution upon the variation of concentration and solvent polarity. Complex 1a is surrounded by two tetraphenyl ethylene (TPE) moieties, whose dense stacking engenders strong aggregation in solution. Furthermore, the incorporation of the TPE-decorated gold clusters into a polymer backbone promotes molecular restriction within a constrained polymer micelle and thus facilitates efficient emission enhancement of gold clusters. In contrast, the other two gold clusters with small ethynylbenzene and chloride as peripheral ligands exhibit low emission efficiency. The contrastive study showcases how the peripheral ligand arrangements influence assemblies of metal clusters and potentiates such effects in the rational design of cluster-based luminescent materials.
