Abstract:Graphene has received intensive research interest in various areas due to its outstanding mechanical, electrical properties, high specific surface area and 2D flexible structure. Mechanical exfoliation generates defect-free graphene, but suffers from ultra-low yield. This drawback can be partially overcome by chemical vapor deposition method (CVD). However, conventional CVD imposes high temperature. In recent years, microwave plasma-enhanced CVD (MPCVD) has been widely investigated as a viable strategy toward large-area graphene synthesis. In this review, important issues during the process are summarized. Firstly, various MPCVD devices that have been explored for graphene synthesis are presented. Secondly, effect of carbon sources, nitrogen-containing gases, and CO2 in the precursors are discussed. Thirdly, MPCVD enabled direct synthesis of graphene on metal substrates and non-metal sustrates is discussed. Finally, the advances of MPCVD in lowering the graphene synthesis temperature are demonstrated.

Abstract:Nanoparticles hosted in conductive matrices are ubiquitous in electrochemical energy storage, catalysis and energetic devices. However, agglomeration and surface oxidation remain as two major challenges towards their ultimate utility, especially for highly reactive materials. Here we report uniformly distributed nanoparticles with diameters around 10 nm can be self-assembled within a reduced graphene oxide matrix in 10 ms. Microsized particles in reduced graphene oxide are Joule heated to high temperature (∼1,700 K) and rapidly quenched to preserve the resultant nano-architecture. A possible formation mechanism is that microsized particles melt under high temperature, are separated by defects in reduced graphene oxide and self-assemble into nanoparticles on cooling. The ultra-fast manufacturing approach can be applied to a wide range of materials, including aluminium, silicon, tin and so on. One unique application of this technique is the stabilization of aluminium nanoparticles in reduced graphene oxide film, which we demonstrate to have excellent performance as a switchable energetic material.

Abstract:Monoelemental atomic sheets (Xenes) and other 2D materials offer record electronic mobility, high thermal conductivity, excellent Young's moduli, optical transparency, and flexural capability, revolutionizing ultrasensitive devices and enhancing performance. The ideal synthesis of these quantum materials should be facile, fast, scalable, reproducible, and green. Microwave expansion followed by cryoquenching (MECQ) leverages thermal stress in graphite to produce high-purity graphene within minutes. MECQ synthesis of graphene is reported at 640 and 800 W for 10 min, followed by liquid nitrogen quenching for 5 and 90 min of sonication. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses confirmed the chemical identity and phase purity of monolayers and few-layered graphene sheets (200-12 µm). Higher microwave power yields thinner layers with enhanced purity. Molecular dynamics simulations and DFT calculations support the exfoliation under these conditions. Electrostatic droplet switching is demonstrated using MECQ-synthesized graphene, observing electrorolling of a mercury droplet on a BN/graphene interface at voltages above 20 V. This technique can inspire the synthesis of other 2D materials with high purity and enable new applications.

Abstract:Graphene and MXenes, both as an emerging two-dimensional (2D) material, have become the predominant choice of electrochemical energy electrode materials owing to large surface-area-to-volume ratio and high electrical conductivity. However, severe restacking of such 2D ultrathin nanostructures largely lowers active surfaces and thus constrains their applications. Herein, we develop a microwave selective heating strategy that is highly efficient for ultrafast and scalable fabrication of novel coral-like porous MXene/graphene composite with high-quality graphene and well-dispersed TiO2 nanocrystals. The MXene not only works as a source material but also serves as an excellent microwave absorbent, which leads to that reduction of graphene oxides can be completed within only 10 s under microwave irradiation at a much lower applied power of 200 W than the reported value of 1000 W. Especially the coral-like TiO2-MXene/graphene material with large porosity delivers much higher capacity (356 mAh g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1)) and much better rate capability than those for pure graphene, MXene and other MXene/graphene composites. That is attributed to the composites avoids restacking, assures structural stability, and provides high specific surface area and excellent electrons/ions conductivity. This work provides a new route to large-scale and low-cost production of high-performance electrode materials for lithium -ion battery.

Abstract:Graphene-supported single atomic metals (G-SAMs) have recently attracted considerable research interest for their intriguing catalytic, electronic, and magnetic properties. The development of effective synthetic methodologies toward G-SAMs with monodispersed metal atoms is vital for exploring their fundamental properties and potential applications. A convenient, rapid, and general strategy to synthesize a series of monodispersed atomic transition metals (for example, Co, Ni, Cu) embedded in nitrogen-doped graphene by two-second microwave (MW) heating the mixture of amine-functionalized graphene oxide and metal salts is reported here. The MW heating is able to simultaneously induce the reduction of graphene oxide, the doping of nitrogen, and the incorporation of metal atoms into the graphene lattices in one simple step. The rapid MW process minimizes metal diffusion and aggregation to ensure exclusive single metal atom dispersion in graphene lattices. Electrochemical studies demonstrate that graphene-supported Co atoms can function as highly active electrocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction. This MW-assisted method provides a rapid and efficient avenue to supported metal atoms for wide ranges of applications.

Abstract:Metal-graphene nanocomposites are highly attractive for a wide range of structural and functional applications. One promising approach for their "one-step" synthesis is through electrical explosion, which utilizes high-electric-power pulses to achieve ultrafast heating/quenching rates (d T /d t ∼ 10^10 K/s) of current-carrying conductors. By performing electrical explosion of metallic wire in a graphite-powder-containing tube, hundreds of Joules can be instantaneously confined in 7-cm 3 space, leading to intense plasma-material interactions. Our research has yielded two distinct metal-graphene assembly routes: the first involves the graphite nanosheets decorated with metallic nanoparticles (<100 nm-diameter), while the second concerns the nanometal core coated by graphene shell (<10 layers) along with onion-like carbon. Explosion-induced shockwave and its reflection exfoliate graphite powders and initiate turbulent-mixing of the flow field, allowing the atomized metal to quench on graphite nanosheets. Further increasing explosion energy to achieve oscillating-discharge for reaction, strong radiation and kinetic energy of plasmas will sublimate the graphite, cooling to structures.

Abstract:Armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) with sub-nanometer width are potential materials for the fabrication of novel nanodevices thanks to their moderate direct band gaps. AGNRs are usually synthesized by polymerizing precursor molecules on substrate surface. However, it is time-consuming and not suitable for large-scale production. AGNRs can also be grown by transforming precursor molecules inside single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) via furnace annealing, but the obtained AGNRs are normally twisted. In this work, microwave heating is applied for transforming precursor molecules into AGNRs. The fast heating process allows synthesizing the AGNRs in seconds. Several different molecules were successfully transformed into AGNRs, suggesting that it is a universal method. More importantly, as demonstrated by Raman spectroscopy, aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and theoretical calculations, less twisted AGNRs are synthesized by the microwave heating than the furnace annealing. Our results reveal a route for rapid production of AGNRs in large scale, which would benefit future applications in novel AGNRs-based semiconductor devices.

Abstract:<p>Nanomaterials comprising earth-abundant elements show great potential as substitutes for scarce, expensive materials in energy conversions, but degradation and contamination issues in working environments severely limit their practical applications. Here we report a facile and scalable strategy to synthesize ultrathin-graphene-coated cobalt nanoparticles which are achieved by the application of an electrical current pulse to a carbon-based substrate and by generating a transient high temperature of up to 1500 K in 50 ms to induce the nanoparticle growth and graphene coating. Thickness of the graphene shell is effectively controlled to be under three atomic layers, favorable for charge transfer and electrocatalytic applications. Our one-step synthetic strategy provides a universal, scalable and cost-effective approach for the fast synthesis of metal-carbon core-shell nanoarchitectures for energy conversion applications.</p>

Abstract:BiOBr/graphene nanocomposites were synthesized by a green single-step microwave strategy and characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared BiOBr nanoplates and BiOBr/graphene nanocomposites for the photodegeneration of organic dyes in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation was investigated. The results show that BiOBr/graphene nanocomposites have a higher photocatalytic activity than bare BiOBr nanoplates.

Abstract:Here we introduce a simple, superfast, and scalable strategy that obtains graphene quantum dots (GQDs) within 3 min under microwave irradiation (MA-GQDs). The MA-GQDs exhibit excellent fluorescence quantum yields up to 35% in the optimum reaction condition. The MA-GQDs with single-crystalline and few-layer structure can reach the visible region with the longest absorption wavelength at 700 nm. Moreover, these ultrabright-fluorescence and stable MAGQDs as a phosphor and fluorescence probe could be efficiently applied in white light-emitting diodes and cell imaging fields. The developed pathway to GQDs can provide unambiguous and remarkable insights into the design of high-fluorescence and few-defect GQDs, and expedite the applications of GQDs.

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY), a 2D carbon allotrope, is predicted to possess high carrier mobility and an intrinsic bandgap. However, the controlled synthesis of mono‐ or few‐layer GDY with good crystallinity remains challenging because of the instability of the monomers. Herein, a rapid and catalyst‐free synthetic method is presented for few‐layer GDY involving the use of a solid/liquid interface and a microwave‐induced temperature gradient. Sodium chloride, which can absorb microwave energy, is used as the solid substrate in a nonabsorbing solvent. A temperature gradient is formed at the solid/liquid interface under microwave irradiation, facilitating the cross‐coupling reaction of monomers at the solid surface and stabilizing the monomers in the bulk solution. Few‐layer GDY with an average thickness of less than 2 nm, a field‐effect mobility of 50.1 cm2 V−1 s−1, and p‐type characteristics is successfully obtained. This wet chemical approach may be extended to the synthesis of other few‐layered 2D materials with improved quality.
Sub-second ultrafast yet programmable wet-chemical synthesis

Abstract:Wet-chemical synthesis via heating bulk solution is powerful to obtain nanomaterials. However, it still suffers from limited reaction rate, controllability, and massive consumption of energy/reactants, particularly for the synthesis on specific substrates. Herein, we present an innovative wet-interfacial Joule heating (WIJH) approach to synthesize various nanomaterials in a sub-second ultrafast, programmable, and energy/reactant-saving manner. In the WIJH, Joule heat generated by the graphene film (GF) is confined at the substrate-solution interface. Accompanied by instantaneous evaporation of the solvent, the temperature is steeply improved and the precursors are concentrated, thereby synergistically accelerating and controlling the nucleation and growth of nanomaterials on the substrate. WIJH leads to a record high crystallization rate of HKUST-1 (~1.97 μm s-1), an ultralow energy cost (9.55 × 10-6 kWh cm-2) and low precursor concentrations, which are up to 5 orders of magnitude faster, -6 and -2 orders of magnitude lower than traditional methods, respectively. Moreover, WIJH could handily customize the products' amount, size, and morphology via programming the electrified procedures. The as-prepared HKUST-1/GF enables the Joule-heating-controllable and low-energy-required capture and liberation towards CO2. This study opens up a new methodology towards the superefficient synthesis of nanomaterials and solvent-involved Joule heating.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have been recognized as the spine of nanoscience and nanotechnology, showing potential applications in material science, chemistry, natural chemistry, and biotechnology. However, the current trend for the synthesis of nanomaterials endures a challenge to redesign the synthetic strategies offering the use of less hazardous chemicals and reduction in the reaction time and required energy. In this context, microwave (MW)-assisted methods can be considered as a promising green strategy to synthesize the nanomaterials and nanocomposites, confirming the green chemistry approaches. Besides, MW-assisted strategies give a homogenous heating to the reaction mixture to diminish the thermal gradients in the reaction solution. This phenomenon is responsible for the reliable nucleation and growth environment, which leads to the formation of nanomaterials with uniform size distribution. The present review article includes the fundamentals of MW chemistry which is very essential to understand the mechanism and solution-phase phenomenon during the MW heating. Furthermore, we discussed the recent advancements and MW-assisted strategies and their claims toward the creation of nanostructured materials which leads to green chemistry, showing various potential applications.
