Abstract:High power mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC) laser sources are important for a wide range of applications in sensing, spectroscopy, imaging, defense, and security. Despite recent advances on high power mid-infrared SC laser sources using fluoride fibers, the lack of mid-infrared fibers with good chemical and thermal stability remains a significant technological challenge. Here we show that all solid fluorotellurite fibers we developed can be used as the nonlinear media for constructing 10-W-level mid-infrared SC laser sources. All solid fluorotellurite fibers are fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. The core and cladding materials are TeO2-BaF2-Y2O3 and TeO2 modified fluoroaluminate glasses with good water resistance and high transition temperature (similar to 424 degrees C). By using a 60 cm long fluorotellurite fiber with a core diameter of 6.8 mu m as the nonlinear medium and a high power 1980 nm femtosecond fiber laser as the pump source, we obtain 10.4 W SC generation from 947 to 3934 nm in the fiber for a pump power of similar to 15.9 W, and the corresponding optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is about 65%. The spectral broadening is caused by self-phase modulation, soliton fission, soliton self-frequency shift, and dispersive wave generation. Our results show that all solid fluorotellurite fiber can be used for constructing high power mid-infrared SC laser sources for real applications. Abstract:All-solid fluorotellurite fibers are fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. The core and cladding materials are TeO2-BaF2-Y2O3 (TBY) and AlF3-based glasses, respectively. Since the refractive index (∼1.46) of AlF3-based glass is much lower than that (∼1.84) of TBY glass, the zero-dispersion-wavelength of the fabricated fiber can be tuned from 2145 to 1507 nm by varying the fiber core diameter from 50 to 3 μm. By using a 0.6 m long all-solid fluorotellurite fiber with a core diameter of ∼7 μm as the nonlinear medium and a 2 μm femtosecond fiber laser as the pump source, 4.5 W supercontinuum (SC) generation from 1017 to 3438 nm is obtained for a launched pump power of ∼10.48 W. The corresponding optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is about 42.9%. In addition, no any damage of the fluorotellurite fiber is observed during the operation of the above SC light source. Our results show that all-solid fluorotellurite fibers are promising nonlinear media for constructing high power mid-infrared SC light sources.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate a 25.8 W all-fiber mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC) light source based on fluorotellurite fibers. All-solid fluorotellurite fibers are fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. A 56 cm long fluorotellurite fiber with a core diameter of $\sim 11~\mu \text{m}$ is used as the nonlinear medium and a high power $1.93\sim 2.5~\mu \text{m}$ SC fiber laser as the pump source. The fluorotellurite fiber is connected to the output silica fiber of the pump source by direct fusion splicing, leading to the formation of the compact all-fiber structure. For a pump power of ~42.6 W, we obtain a 25.8 W SC light source with a spectral range from 0.93 to 3.99 $\mu \text{m}$ . The corresponding optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is about 60.6%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to report all-fiber high power mid-infrared SC light source based on fluorotellurite fibers. Our results pave the way to apply mid-infrared SC light sources based on fluorotellurite fibers for real applications.

Abstract:In this study, a fluorotellurite glass fiber with relatively good thermal and chemical stability was developed. Using this glass fiber as a nonlinear medium, the broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation of 0.6-5.1 mu m was experimentally obtained. An SC light source with an average power of about 20 W and a spectral range of 1-1 mu m was also obtained. This study mainly focuses on the recent progress on the high-power mid-infrared SC light sources, including the material characteristics of fluoride glass fibers and fluorotellurite glass fibers and the SC laser sources based on the former. The future development of such SC laser sources is prospected.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate 22.7 W mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) generation in all-solid fluorotellurite fibers. All-solid fluorotellurite fibers based on ${{\rm TeO}_2} {\text -} {{\rm BaF}_2}{\text -}{{\rm Y}_2}{{\rm O}_3}$TeO2-BaF2-Y2O3 and ${{\rm TeO}_2}$TeO2 modified fluoroaluminate glasses are fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. By using a 0.6 m long fluorotellurite fiber with a core diameter of 11 µm as the nonlinear medium and a high-power 1.93-2.5 µm SC fiber laser as the pump source, we obtain 22.7 W SC generation from 0.93 to 3.95 µm in the fiber for a pump power of 39.7 W. The 10 dB bandwidth is about 1633 nm, and the corresponding spectral range is from 1890 to 3523 nm. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is about 57.2%. Our results show that all-solid fluorotellurite fibers are promising nonlinear media for constructing high-power MIR SC light sources.

Abstract:All-solid fluorotellurite fibers with ultra-high NA of 1.11 at 1560nm and a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) of 1637 nm were fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. Flat supercontinuum (SC) generation was obtained in a 1.5 m long all-solid fluorotellurite fiber pumped by a 1560 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The SC light had a 5 dB bandwidth of 1776 nm in the range from 1028 to 2804nm and an output power of 201 mW. The corresponding conversion efficiency was 46.3%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of flat SC generation in ultra-high NA all-solid fluorotellurite fibers.

Abstract:Supercontinuum (SC) sources covering near-infrared and midinfrared region have attracted enormous interest and found significant applications in tissue imaging, sensing, spectroscopy, defense, and environmental monitoring. Herein, an 8.45 W all-fiber ultraflat SC source with a spectral range of 1.01-4.05 mu m using a flat high-power 1.9-2.7 mu m SC fiber source to pump a piece of fluorotellurite fiber is presented. The SC spectrum exhibits a 3 dB bandwidth of 1850 nm, ranging from 1870 to 3720 nm, and a 10 dB bandwidth of 2770 nm, ranging from 1120 to 3890 nm. The measured power stability is 0.19% (root mean square) for 5 h of continuous operation, proving the excellent power stability of the system. To the best of knowledge, the SC spectrum exhibits the widest reported 3 and 10 dB bandwidths for 1-4 mu m SC sources. An ultraflat, broadband-coverage, high-power midinfrared supercontinuum laser source is proposed and thoroughly studied. The nonlinear medium is a fluorotellurite fiber with stable thermal properties, high nonlinear coefficient, and good water resistance. Abstract:Enormous efforts have been made to realize supercontinuum (SC) generation covering the entire transmission window of fiber materials for their wide applications in many fields. Here we demonstrate ultra-broadband SC generation from 400 to 5140nm in a tapered ultra-high numerical aperture (NA) all-solid fluorotellurite liber pumped by a 1560nm mode-locked fiber laser. The fluorotellurite fibers arc fabricated using a rod-in-tube method. The core and cladding materials are TeO2-BaF2-Y2O3- and TeO2-modified fluoroaluminate glasses, respectively, which have large refractive index contrast and similar thermal expansion coefflcienls and softening temperatures. The NA at 3200nm of the fluorotellurite fiber is about 1.11. Furthermore, tapered fluorotellurite fibers arc prepared using an elongation machine. SC generation covering the entire 0.4-5 mu m transmission window is achieved in a tapered fluorotellurite fiber for a pumping peak power of similar to 10.5 kW through synergetic control of dispersion, nonlinearity, confinement loss and other unexpecled effects (e.g. the attachment of dust or water to the surface of the fiber core) of the fiber. Our results show that, tapered ultrahigh NA all-solid soft glass fibers have a potential for generating SC light covering their entire transmission window.

Abstract:We demonstrate broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation from 600 to 5400 nm in a tapered fluorotellurite fiber pumped by a 2010 nm femtosecond fiber laser. All-solid fluorotellurite fibers with a core diameter of ∼6 μm are fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. Tapered fluorotellurite fibers with an untapered region length of ∼2 cm and a tapered transition region length of ∼1.05 cm are prepared by employing an elongation machine. By using the tapered fiber as the nonlinear medium and a 2010 nm femtosecond fiber laser as the pump source, SC generation from 600 to 5400 nm is obtained, the 30 dB bandwidth of the generated SC light is about 3600 nm, and the corresponding output power is about 0.85 W for a launched average pump power of ∼1.57 W. The spectral broadening in the tapered fiber is caused by higher order soliton compression, Raman soliton, and blue-shifted and red-shifted dispersive wave generation. Our results show that fluorotellurite fibers are promising nonlinear media for generating broadband SC light expanding from visible to 5400 nm.

Abstract:We demonstrated supercontinuum (SC) generation in a tapered fluorotellurite microstructured fiber (MF) with a sub-micrometer core diameter. Fluorotellurite MFs based on TeO2-BaF2-Y2O3 glasses were fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method and a tapered fluorotellurite MF with a minimum core diameter of similar to 0.65 mu m was prepared by employing a tapering system. A 1560 nm femtosecond fiber laser was used as the pumping source. With increasing the peak power of the launched pump laser to similar to 11 kW, SC light expanding from 437 to 2850 nm was generated in the tapered fluorotellurite MF. In addition, relatively strong blue-shifted dispersive wave at similar to 489 nm was also observed from the tapered fluorotellurite MF.

Abstract:Broadband supercontinuum laser sources in the mid-infrared region have attracted enormous interest and found significant applications in spectroscopy, imaging, sensing, defense, and security. Despite recent advances in mid-infrared supercontinuum laser sources using infrared fibers, the average power of those laser sources is limited to 10-watt-level, and further power scaling to over 50 W (or hundred-watt-level) remains a significant technological challenge. Here, we report an over 50 W all-fiber mid-infrared supercontinuum laser source with a spectral range from 1220 to 3740 nm, by using low loss (<0.1 dB/m) fluorotellurite fibers we developed as the nonlinear medium and a tilted fusion splicing method for reducing the reflection from the fluorotellurite-silica fiber joint. Furthermore, the scalability of all-fiber mid-infrared supercontinuum laser sources using fluorotellurite fibers is analyzed by considering thermal effects and optical damage, which verifies its potential of power scaling to hundred-watt-level. Our results pave the way for realizing all-fiber hundred-watt-level mid-infrared lasers for real applications.

Abstract:High flatness, wide bandwidth, and high-coherence properties of supercontinuum (SC) generation in fibers are crucial in many applications. It is challenging to achieve SC spectra in a combination of the properties, since special dispersion profiles are required, especially when pump pulses with duration over 100 fs are employed. We propose an all-solid microstructured fiber composed only of hexagonal glass elements. The optimized fiber possesses an ultraflat all-normal dispersion profile, covering a wide wavelength interval of approximately 1.55 μm. An SC spectrum spanning from approximately 1030 to 2030 nm (corresponding to nearly one octave) with flatness <3 dB is numerically generated in the fiber with 200 fs pump pulses at 1.55 μm. The results indicate that the broadband ultraflat SC sources can be all-fiber and miniaturized due to commercially achievable 200-fs fiber lasers. Moreover, the SC pulses feature high coherence and a single pulse in the time domain, which can be compressed to 13.9-fs pulses with high quality even for simple linear chirp compensation. The Fourier-limited pulse duration of the spectrum is 3.19 fs, corresponding to only 0.62 optical cycles.

Abstract:We report what we believe to be the first demonstration of supercontinuum generation spanning over three octaves from UV (at least approximately 350 nm) to 3.85 microm in a 2.5-cm-long fluoride fiber pumped by a 1450 nm femtosecond laser. The spectral broadening in the fluoride fiber is caused primarily by self-phase modulation. Its performance is also compared with that of a 2.5-cm-long silica fiber pumped by the same laser.

Abstract:Mid-infrared supercontinuum (MIR-SC) light sources have attracted much attention owing to their wide applications in monitoring plasma etching processes, combustion flow monitoring, trace gas sensors for pollution monitoring, and biomedical diagnosis. To generate MIR-SC light source, soft glass fibers (SGFs, e.g., fluoride, chalcogenide and tellurite fibers) with low loss in the mid-infrared region have been used as the nonlinear medium. In this talk, we will summarize recent progresses on MIR-SC generation in SGFs. Especially, the potential of active fluorotellurite microstructured fibers for MIR-SC generation is clarified.

Abstract:Coherent supercontinuum light expanding from 1.4 to 4 μm is generated in a 4 cm long tapered fluorotellurite microstructured fiber (MF) pumped by a 1980 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The spectral broadening in the tapered fluorotellurite MF is caused by self-phase modulation, the Raman soliton, and red-shifted dispersive wave generation. Our results show that tapered fluorotellurite MFs are promising nonlinear medium for generating coherent broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum light.

Abstract:We numerically investigate mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in single mode fluoride fiber pumped by 1.56 mu m femtosecond fiber lasers. To get high energy conversion efficiency in mid-infrared region, the ratio of power generated in 2.5 similar to 5 mu m range to the total input power for supercontinuum generation is optimized by varying the pulse width, peak power and fiber length. The long wavelength edge of the supercontinuum spectrum can be extended to 5 mu m in a 9 cm long fluoride fiber pumped by a 1.56 mu m fiber laser with a pulse width of 200 fs and a peak power of 2 MW, and the corresponding ratio of power generated in 2.5 similar to 5 mu m range to the total input power is about 29.6%. The spectral broadening is mainly caused by self-phase modulation, stimulated Raman scattering and four-wave mixing. The simulated results show that high energy conversion power supercontinuum light source in 2.5 similar to 5 mu m range could be obtained in fluoride fibers pumped by 1.56 mu m femtosecond fiber lasers.
