Abstract:Artificial exchange-biased two-phase core-shell nanostructures consisting of ferromagnetic (Ni) and multiferroic (BiFeO3) materials were manufactured by a two-step method. An exchange bias effect was observed and studied, which indicates that it is possible to fabricate ferromagnetic-multiferroic nanostructures to utilize the combined ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic functionalities of bismuth ferrite.

Abstract:Bimagnetic Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposite is synthesized in aqueous solution. The nanoparticles are characterized with TEM, FTIR, and magnetic measurements. The as-synthesized nanocomposite exhibits ferromagnetic properties at room temperature due to the exchange coupling between Pt3Co and Fe3O4. Magnetic properties of Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanoparticle can be tuned by varying of the molar ratio of iron to platinum. Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanoparticles exhibit higher saturation magnetization when the molar ratio of iron to platinum is 1.

Abstract:Spinel ferrite-based core–shell hetero nanostructures have received a lot of attention in a variety of applications including the development of gas sensors, memory devices, biomedicine, photo catalysts, and electrodes. In this work, we reported Fe 3 O 4 /MnO core–shell hetero-nanostructure using a simple one-step hydrothermal process. The Field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicate the morphology and oxidation states of Fe, Mn, and O present in nanomaterial with an average cluster size of ⁓580 nm. The results of the bulk magnetic measurements of the prepared core–shell hetero-nanostructure indicate the ferrimagnetic behavior at low temperatures with a blocking temperature of ~ 64 K. The interfacial coupling of synthesized heterostructure was evaluated by the observation of the exchange bias effect under field-cooled protocols, which was demonstrated by a large shifting in magnetization in favor of the positive/negative applied field axis relative to the zero field-cooled magnetization curve.

Abstract:The main purpose of this work is to explore the influences of microstructures on the magnetic properties, as well as the formation mechanism of -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers. The synthesis of nanoflower-like samples includes three processes. Firstly, Fe3O4 nanospheres are synthesized by the solvothermal reaction of FeCl3 dissolved in ethylene glycol and NaAc. Secondly, Fe3O4/Ni(OH)2 core/shell precursor is fabricated by solvothermal method through using the early Fe3O4 spheres and Ni(NO3)26H2O in an ethanol solution. Finally, the precursor Fe3O4/Ni(OH)2 is calcined in air at 300 ℃ for 3-6 h, and therefore resulting in -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers. Their microstructures are characterized by using XRD, XPS, SEM, HRTEM and SAED techniques. The results show that the final powder samples are -Fe2O3/NiO with typical core/shell structure. In this core/shell system, the -Fe2O3 sphere acts as core and the NiO acts as shell, which are comprised of many irregular flake-like nanosheets with monocrystalline structure, and these nanosheets are packed together on the surfaces of -Fe2O3 spheres. The calcination time of Fe3O4/Ni(OH)2 precursor has significant influences on the grain growth, the NiO content and the compactness of NiO shells in the -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell system. VSM and SQUID are used to characterize the magnetic properties of -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers. The results indicate that the 3 h-calcined sample displays better ferromagnetic properties (such as higher ms and smaller HC) because of their high -Fe2O3 content. In addition, as the coupling interaction between the FM -Fe2O3 and AFM NiO components, we observe that the -Fe2O3/NiO samples formed in 3 h and 6 h display certain exchange bias (HE=20 and 46 Oe, respectively). Such a coupling effect allows a variety of reversal paths for the spins upon cycling the applied field, and thereby resulting in the enhancement of coercivity (HC(FC)=252 and 288 Oe, respectively). Further, the values of HE and HC for the former are smaller than those of the latter, this is because of the AFM NiO content in 6 h-calcined sample much higher than that in 3 h-calcined sample. Especially, the temperature dependences of the magnetization M of the two samples under both ZFC and FC conditions indicate that an extra anisotropy is induced. In a word, the size effect, NiO phase content, and FM-AFM (where FM denotes the ferromagnetic -Fe2O3 component, while AFM is the antiferromagnetic NiO component) interface coupling effect have significant influence on the magnetic properties of -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers.

Abstract:A three-step method has been employed to synthesize 1D core-shell nanostructures consisting of a ferromagnetic Co90Pt10 (CoPt) core and a La doped multiferroic Bi0.87La0.13FeO3 (BLFO) shell. La doping efficiently removes the secondary impurity phases in the multiferroic shell and exchange interaction gives a significant exchange bias effect demonstrating the anti-ferromagnetic functionality of Bi0.87La0.13FeO3.

Abstract:Exchange coupled bimagnetic core/shell nanoparticles are promising for emerging multiferroic and spintronic technologies compared with traditional, single-phase materials, as they deliver numerous appealing effects, such as large exchange bias, tailored coercivities, and tunable blocking temperatures. However, it remains a challenge to manipulate their magnetic properties via exchange coupling due to the lack of a straightforward method that enables the general preparation of desired composites. Here we report a robust and general one-pot approach for the synthesis of different kinds of bimagnetic core/shell nanostructures (BMCS NSs). The formation of highly crystalline and monodisperse BMCS NSs adopted a self-adaptive sequential growth, circumventing the employment of complex temperature control and elaborate seeded growth techniques. As a result of large lattice misfit, the presence of interfacial imperfections as an extra source of anisotropy induced diverse exchange coupling interactions in ferro-ferrimagnetic and ferro-antiferromagnetic systems, which had great effects on the improvement of the magnetic properties of BMCS NSs. We envision that this new strategy will open up exciting opportunities toward large-scalable production of such high-quality BMCS NSs, thereby greatly potentiating the prospective applications of nanomagnetic materials.
Large Exchange Bias and Enhanced Coercivity in Strongly-Coupled Ni/NiO Binary Nanoparticles

Abstract:In this study, Ni/NiO binary nanoparticles are synthesized utilizing a reflux method combined with a calcination process. The average size of the nanoparticles is 5-20 nm and the Ni content is 3.55%. Both the microstructures of the Ni/NiO interface and the states of different phases have significant impacts on the magnetic properties. By tuning the temperature and the cooling field during the loop measurement, the change rule of several critical parameters such as coercivity H-C and exchange bias H-E was complicated in nature. Both large H-E (482 Oe) and enhanced H-C (1335 Oe) were observed at 5 K, mainly due to the strong coupling interaction between Ni and NiO components. For current studies of the Ni/NiO binary nanoparticles, the complex magnetic behaviors are related to (i) the ferromagnetic contribution of Ni nanoparticles, (ii) the intrinsic antiferromagnetism of the volume phase of NiO, and (iii) the spin-glass-like characteristic corresponding to the frozen disordered state at the surface of partial NiO particles. The comprehensive effect of these three magnetic structures promotes the generation of a strongly-coupled Ni/NiO binary system, and improves the magnetic performance.

Abstract:Core-shell structured Fe(3)O(4)/SiO(2)/TiO(2) nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic activity that are capable of fast magnetic separation have been successfully synthesized by combining two steps of a sol-gel process with calcination. The as-obtained core-shell structure is composed of a central magnetite core with a strong response to external fields, an interlayer of SiO(2), and an outer layer of TiO(2,) nanocrystals with a tunable average size. The convenient control over the size and crystallinity of the TiO(2) nanocatalysts makes it possible to achieve higher photocatalytic efficiency than that of commercial photocatalyst Degussa P25. The photocatalytic activity increases as the thickness of the TiO(2,) nanocrystal shell decreases. The presence of SiO(2),interlayer helps to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of the TiO(2),nanocrystal shell as well as the chemical and thermal stability of Fe(3)O(4) core. In addition, the TiO(2),nanocrystals strongly adhere to the magnetic supports through covalent bonds. We demonstrate that this photocatalyst can be easily recycled by applying an external magnetic field while maintaining their photocatalytic activity during at least eighteen cycles of use.

Abstract:A series of (100-x)NiO/(x)NiFe2O4 nanocomposites (x 0, 2.5, 5, 8.3, 12.5, 25) synthesized by a chemical coprecipitation method have been investigated. The exchange bias field H-E of the nanocomposites reaches a maximum at x = 2.5, and then decreases with increasing x. The decrease of H-E is attributed to the formation of isolated ferrimagnetic NiFe2O4 clusters, which is confirmed by observation with the use of high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The temperature dependence of H-E and the coercivity H-C for pure NiO is different from those with other samples, which is due to the exchange coupling between the uncompensated antiferromagnetic core and disordered surface shell of NiO nanoparticles. Abstract:Composites LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4–NiO nanosticks were prepared by a simple molten salt route of adding MnSO4 to molten LiNO3, NaNO3 and slightly excess NiSO4·6H2O. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) investigations revealed that one-dimensional composites LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4–NiO nanosticks were generated in a large quantity. The result of dc and ac magnetisation, as well as magnetic hysteresis measurements, shows that three different magnetic phases, i.e. ferrimagnetic, antiferromagnetic (AFM) and spin-glass-like (SGL) phases may coexist in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4–NiO nanocomposites. Furthermore, magnetic measurements suggest that the exchange bias (EB) effect was obtained at low temperature.
Probing strongly exchange coupled magnetic behaviors in soft/hard Ni/CoFe2O4 core/shell nanoparticles

Abstract:Exchange coupling in a model core-shell system is demonstrated as a step on the path to 3d exchange spring magnets. Employing a model system of Ni@CoFe2O4, high quality core-shell nanoparticles were fabricated using a simple two-step method. The microstructural quality was validated using TEM, confirming a well-defined interface between the core and the shell. A strongly temperature dependent two-phase magnetic hysteresis loop was measured, wherein an analysis of step heights indicates coupling of roughly 50% between the core and the shell. Element-specific XMCD hysteresis confirms the presence of exchange coupling, suppressing the superparamagnetism of the Ni core at room temperature, and reaching a coercivity of >6 kOe at 80 K. These results provide a pathway to the development of heterostructured metal-oxide exchange coupled nanoparticles with improved maximum energy product.

Abstract:The flowerlike gamma-Fe2O3@NiO core/shell nanocomposites are synthesized by the two-step method. Their structure and morphology can be controlled by tuning the precursor concentration. Microstructural analysis reveals that all the samples have distinct core/shell structure without impurities, and the NiO shells are built of many irregular nanosheets which enclose the surface of gamma-Fe2O3 core. As the precursor concentration decreases (i.e., more NiO content), the NiO grain grows significantly, and the thickness of NiO shells increases. Magnetic experiments are performed to analyze the influences of different microstructures on magnetic properties of samples and we have the following two results. First, at 5 K, along with increasing thickness of NiO shell, the saturation magnetization increases, while the residual magnetization decreases slightly. Second, the hysteresis loops under cooling field demonstrate that the value of exchange bias effect fluctuates between 13 Oe and 17 Oe. This is mainly because of the NiO shell that (i) is composed of irregular nanosheets with disordered orientations, and (ii) does not form a complete coating around gamma-Fe2O3 core.

Abstract:The surface and interface effects of small antiferromagnetic nanostructures are important on the modulation of their magnetic properties. In this report, temperature and particle size dependent magnetic exchange bias effect was investigated in BiFeO 3 (BFO) nanoparticles that possess natural core-shell structure. Nonmonotonic variation of exchange bias field, interesting surface spin-glass state and improved exchange bias training effect are only obtained in 18 nm BFO particles. Based on comparative experiments on particles with different sizes, we found that the surface spins and the interaction among them show great effect on the interfacial exchange coupling of the core-shell structure, and thus are responsible for the peculiar exchange bias behavior in small BFO nanoparticles. Our work provides the effect of surface spin state on the magnetic characteristics of nanomaterials and will favor their applications on spintronic devices.
A Detailed Investigation of the Onion Structure of Exchanged Coupled Magnetic Fe(3-delta)O4@CoFe2O4@Fe(3-delta)O4 Nanoparticles

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) which combine several magnetic phases offer wide perspectives for cutting edge applications because of the high modularity of their magnetic properties. Besides the addition of the magnetic characteristics intrinsic to each phase, the interface that results from core-shell and, further, from onion structures leads to synergistic properties such as magnetic exchange coupling. Such a phenomenon is of high interest to overcome the superparamagnetic limit of iron oxide NPs which hampers potential applications. In this manuscript, we report on the design of NPs with an onion-like structure which have been scarcely reported yet. These NPs consist in a Fe(3_delta)O4 core covered by a first shell of CoFe2O4 and a second shell of Fe(3-delta)O4. They were synthesized by a multi-step seed mediated growth approach. Although TEM micrographs clearly show the growth of each shell from the iron oxide core, core sizes and shell thicknesses markedly differ from what is suggested by the size increase. We investigated very precisely the structure of NPs in performing high resolution (scanning) TEM imaging and GPA. The chemical composition and spatial distribution of atoms were studied by EELS. The chemical environment and oxidation state of cations were investigated by Mössbauer spectrometry, soft XAS and XMCD. These techniques allowed us to estimate the increase of Fe2+ content in the iron oxide core of the core@shell structure and the increase of the cobalt ferrite shell thickness in the core@shell@shell one, while the iron oxide shell appears to be much thinner than expected. Thus, the modification of the chemical composition as well as the size of the Fe(3-delta)O4 core and the thickness of the cobalt ferrite shell have a high impact on the magnetic properties. Furthermore, the growth of the iron oxide shell also markedly modifies the magnetic properties of the core-shell NPs.

Abstract:In this work we report a study of the magnetic behavior of ferrimagnetic oxide CoFe2O4 and ferrimagnetic oxide/ferromagnetic metal CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites. The latter compound is a good system to study hard ferrimagnet/soft ferromagnet exchange coupling. Two steps were used to synthesize the bimagnetic CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites: (i) first preparation of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles using the a simple hydrothermal method and (ii) second reduction reaction of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles using activated charcoal in inert atmosphere and high temperature. The phase structures, particle sizes, morphology, and magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have been investigated by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) with applied field up to 3.0 kOe at room temperature and 50K. The mean diameter of CoFe2O4 particles is about 16 nm. Mossbauer spectra reveal two sites for Fe3+. One site is related to Fe in an octahedral coordination and the other one to the Fe3+ in a tetrahedral coordination, as expected for a spinel crystal structure of CoFe2O4. TEM measurements of nanocomposite show the formation of a thin shell of CoFe2 on the cobalt ferrite and indicate that the nanoparticles increase to about 100 nm. The magnetization of nanocomposite showed hysteresis loop that is characteristic of the exchange spring systems. A maximum energy product (BH)max of 1.22 MGOe was achieved at room temperature for CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites, which is about 115% higher than the value obtained for CoFe2O4 precursor. The exchange-spring interaction and the enhancement of product (BH)max in nanocomposite CoFe2O4/CoFe2 have been discussed.

Abstract:A series of CoFe2O4/FeO/CoFe nanocomposites was prepared by reducing cobalt ferrite nanoparticles under the mixed gas of Ar (95%) and H2 (5%) at 450 °C for different times, and the effects of exchange bias and exchange spring have been observed. X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy demonstrate CoFe2O4/FeO/CoFe nanocomposites are obtained when the reduction time exceeds 0.5 h, and the concentrations of CoFe2O4 and FeO decrease, accompanied by the increase of CoFe on extending the reduction time. The field emission scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope images show the spherical CoFe2O4, FeO, and CoFe nanoparticles with the average sizes about 17.0 nm are randomly distributed with a certain degree of agglomeration. Magnetic measurements indicate there is a strong exchange bias behavior between the CoFe2O4 and FeO nanoparticles in the sample reduced for 0.5 h with an exchange bias field being 1161.4 Oe at 50 K, and a good exchange spring effect between CoFe2O4 and CoFe phases in the sample reduced for 1.5 h with saturation magnetization, remnant magnetization, and coercivity at 300 K being 121.33 emu/g, 41.90 emu/g, and 802.4 Oe. These results are important not only for understanding the exchange-coupling interaction in the reduction process of cobalt ferrite but also for their application in spin-valve devices.

Abstract:Exchange-coupled nanocomposites of Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe are successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition and reductive annealing process. The phase size, composition, as well as magnetic properties, can be readily tuned by changing the ratio between Nd-Fe-B-oxide and α-Fe. The optimum properties shows coercivity of 12 000 Gs and an enhanced remanence of Mr/M3T = 0.63.

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropic nanocomposites have attracted tremendous interests, due to their unexpected properties originating from the interactions of the interfaces except for the intrinsic features. In this work, we develop a facile solution chemistry synthesis method to prepare the one-dimensional (1D) Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures with hard magnetic property. Interestingly, the Fe precursor firstly decompose and nucleate individually, and then grow on the surface of the hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) Co nanorods (NRs) upon prolonging heating time at higher temperature, which is different from the general seed-mediated growth model. The distribution density of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of the Co NRs can be varied with the addition of Fe source, modulating the values of coercivity and saturation magnetization for the Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures. The as-synthesizedCo-Fe3O4 heterostructures maintain the hard magnetic properties with a coercivity value more than 2.5 kOe as well as a saturation magnetization value up to 128.3 emu g−1, indicating the preservation of the anisotropy of the hcp Co NRs.
