Abstract:It is desired but challenging to develop a non-noble metal catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol with O2 under solvent-free conditions. Herein, a series of Ce-doped high entropy oxides (Ce/HEOs) were prepared via co-precipitation and subsequent thermal treatment method. It was found that, the doping of Ce could remarkably promote the catalytic activity for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The improved activity was ascribed to the good distribution of active Ce species, the increased oxygen vacancies, and the synergistic effect between CeO2 and high entropy oxides (HEOs). In addition, the surface oxygen of Ce/HEOs towards Ce displayed stronger reducibility compared to that of bare CeO2, endowing it stronger deprotonation ability towards benzyl alcohol during the reaction. The prepared catalyst exhibited satisfactory reusability and stability owing to the entropy-stabilized effect of HEOs and the interaction between CeO2 and HEOs, and negligible loss in catalytic activity was observed after seven runs. Besides, DFT calculations disclosed that, with the doping of Ce, the Ce/HEOs catalyst possessed stronger adsorption ability towards benzyl alcohol, and lower free energy was required for the rate-determining step during the whole oxidative reaction. This work gave some insights into the promotional effect of Ce doped into high entropy oxides for the solvent-free catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:The selective CH bond oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbon is an interesting but challenging task, it is desirable to develop efficient heterogeneous non-noble metal catalyst for this reaction. Herein, two kinds of spinel (FeCoNiCrMn)3O4 high entropy oxides were fabricated via two different methods (i.e., c-FeCoNiCrMn, prepared by a co-precipitation method, and m-FeCoNiCrMn, prepared by physically mixing method). Different from traditional environmentally-unfriendly Co/Mn/Br system, the prepared catalysts were employed for the selective CH bond oxidation of p-chlorotoluene to p-chlorobenzaldehyde in a green approach. Compared to m-FeCoNiCrMn, c-FeCoNiCrMn have smaller particles size and larger specific surface area, which were related to the enhanced catalytic activity. More importantly, characterization results disclosed that abundant oxygen vacancies were formed over c-FeCoNiCrMn. Such a result facilitated the adsorption of p-chlorotoluene on the catalyst surface and promoted the formation of *ClPhCH2O intermediate as well as the desired p-chlorobenzaldehyde, as revealed by DFT (Density functional theory) calculations. Besides, scavenger tests and EPR (Electron paramagnetic resonance) results indicated that hydroxyl radical derived from H2O2 homolysis was the main active oxidative species for this reaction. This work revealed the role of oxygen vacancy in spinel high entropy oxide and also demonstrated its promising application for the selective CH bond oxidation in an environmentally-benign approach.

Abstract:Nanostructured cerium-based catalytic materials have attracted much attention in the field of redox catalysis, due to the excellent active sites exposed on the nanocrystal surface, and herein, the oxygen vacancy (OV) and the crystal facet effect of typical model nanostructured ceria (Nano-CeO2) were focused and investigated for the catalytic aerobic cyclohexane oxidation. Specifically for the CeO2 nanocubes with a {100} facet, the CeO2 nanopolyhedrons with a dominant {111} facet, and the CeO2 nanorods with a dominant {110} facet, the catalytic roles of the OV and acid sites toward cyclohexane oxidation were systematically investigated. Surface oxygen vacancy (Sur-OV) and intrinsic oxygen vacancy (Int-OV), and particularly the active Sur-OV and active Int-OV performing catalytic activity under a working state specific for cyclohexane oxidation, were accurately recognized and distinguished. Furthermore, the activation ability of the OV sites for activating molecular oxygen into active oxygen species (OActive) was also revealed, and the acid site properties, which include the acidity and the types of acid sites, were probed and quantified. The Nano-CeO2 with an exposed {100} facet possesses the most active Sur-OV, determining the catalytic activity, and has the strongest activation ability, contributing to a high reaction activity under extremely inert conditions. The Nano-CeO2 with a {110} dominant facet with the most active Int-OV and abundant acid sites could accelerate further oxidation to adipic acid; the effect of the two key sites was described particularly by the α factor (= Total Acidity × Amount of Active Int-OV). Finally, the property–performance relationship toward cyclohexane oxidation was speculated based on the Nano-CeO2 catalytic system.

Abstract:Mn-doped CeO2 and CeO2 with the same morphology (nanofiber and nanocube) have been synthesized through hydrothermal method. When applied to benzene oxidation, the catalytic performance of Mn-doped CeO2 is better than that of CeO2, due to the difference of the concentration of O vacancy. Compared to CeO2 with the same morphology, more oxygen vacancies were generated on the surface of Mn-doped CeO2, due to the replacement of Ce ion with Mn ion. The lattice replacement has been analyzed through XRD, Raman, electron energy loss spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance technology. The formation energies of oxygen vacancy on the different exposed crystal planes such as (110) and (100) for Mn-doped CeO2 were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT). The results show that the oxygen vacancy is easier to be formed on the (110) plane. Other factors influencing catalytic behavior have also been investigated, indicating that the surface oxygen vacancy plays a crucial role in catalytic reaction.

Promoted oxygen adsorption on porous CeO2 cubes with abundant oxygen vacancies for efficient gaseous formaldehyde removal

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation stands as a promising method for eliminating gas-phase pollutants, with the efficiency largely hinging on the capture of photogenerated electrons by oxygen. In this work, we synthesized a porous CeO2 single crystal cube with abundant oxygen vacancies as photocatalyst, employing urea as a pore-forming agent and for gas-phase formaldehyde degradation. Compared with the CeO2 cubes without pores, the porous ones were superior in specific surface area, akin to conventional CeO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic degradation for gas-phase formaldehyde on porous CeO2 cubes was significantly accelerated, of which degradation rate is 3.3 times and 2.1 times that of CeO2 cubes without pores and CeO2 nanoparticles, respectively. Photoelectric tests and DFT calculations revealed that this enhancement stemmed from facilitated oxygen adsorption due to pronounced oxygen vacancies. Consequently, the capture of photoelectrons by oxygen was promoted and its recombination with holes was suppressed, along with an accelerated generation of curial free radicals such as ·OH. This work reveals the pivotal role of surface oxygen vacancies in promoting adsorbed oxygen, proposing a viable strategy to enhance the photocatalytic degradation efficiency for gas-phase pollutants.

Abstract:The present work reports the rapid preparation of CeO2 nanorods by surfactant-free precipitation for the first time, which initiates a strategy for the quantitative elucidation of the importance of the exposed crystallographic planes and the oxygen vacancy concentrations of different morphologies of nanoceria. These relations are revealed through comparison of the relative surface areas of the exposed crystallographic planes. The precipitation temperature was critical in that nanooctahedra formed at the three lower temperatures and nanorods formed at the highest. The key feature to differentiate the photocatalytic performance was the morphology that the nanorods exhibit similar to 200% superior performance compared to those of the nanooctahedra. The principal reason for this is the presence of exposed {110} planes in the nanorods, which are not present in nanoctahedra. This crystallographic dependence of the improved performance of the nanorods is attributed directly to the greater oxygen vacancy concentration for the calculated surface area of this morphology.

Abstract:Catalytic combustion technology is one of the effective methods to remove VOCs such as toluene from industrial emissions. The decomposition of an aromatic ring via catalyst oxygen vacancies is usually the rate-determining step of toluene oxidation into CO2. Series of CeO2 probe models were synthesized with different ratios of surface-to-bulk oxygen vacancies. Besides the devotion of the surface vacancies, a part of the bulk vacancies promotes the redox property of CeO2 in toluene catalytic combustion: surface vacancies tend to adsorb and activate gaseous O2 to form adsorbed oxygen species, whereas bulk vacancies improve the mobility and activity of lattice oxygen species via their transmission effect. Adsorbed oxygen mainly participates in the chemical adsorption and partial oxidation of toluene (mostly to phenolate). Abstract:Aldol condensation is a very useful reaction for biomass upgrading by coupling small molecule platform compounds into high value-added products. Here we choose acetaldehyde (AcH) condensation, the rate-determining step in bioethanol transformations, as a targeted reaction, and prepared four CeO2 catalysts with different concentrations of surface oxygen vacancies to investigate the role of oxygen vacancies in this reaction. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to demonstrate that there is a linear correlation between the activity of aldol condensation and the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Based on in-situ FTIR studies, we conclude that oxygen vacancies are the Lewis acid sites for activation and stabilization of AcH, while lattice oxygen act as base sites for the formation of enolate species which are the key intermediates for AcH coupling reactions. Moreover, the proposed reaction mechanism indicates that Ce cations which are weak Lewis acid sites are not involved in the AcH condensation.

Abstract:There is considerable interest in the pH-dependent, switchable, biocatalytic properties of cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles in biomedicine, where these materials exhibit beneficial antioxidant activity against reactive oxygen species (ROS) at a basic physiological pH but cytotoxic prooxidant activity in an acidic cancer cell pH microenvironment. While the general characteristics of the role of oxygen vacancies are known, the mechanism of their action at the atomic scale under different pH conditions has yet to be elucidated. The present work applies density functional theory (DFT) calculations to interpret, at the atomic scale, the pH-induced behavior of the stable {111} surface of CeO2 containing oxygen vacancies. Analysis of the surface-adsorbed media species reveals the critical role of pH on the interaction between ROS (•O2- and H2O2) and the defective CeO2 {111} surface. Under basic conditions, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) biomimetic reactions can be performed cyclically, scavenging and decomposing ROS to harmless products, making CeO2 an excellent antioxidant. However, under acidic conditions, the CAT biomimetic reaction is hindered owing to the limited reversibility of Ce3+ ↔ Ce4+ and formation ↔ annihilation of oxygen vacancies. A Fenton biomimetic reaction (H2O2 + Ce3+ → Ce4+ + OH- + •OH) is predicted to occur simultaneously with the SOD and CAT biomimetic reactions, resulting in the formation of hydroxyl radicals, making CeO2 a cytotoxic prooxidant.

Abstract:Engineering surface oxygen species to tune catalytic selectivity of oxides is an emerging hot topic in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we demonstrate that HCl treatment can controllably chlorinate CeO2 at surface oxygen vacancies and tightly regulate the content of surface oxygen vacancies (O-s). Structure-property studies reveal that the decreased ratio of O-s quasi-linearly promotes the C3H6 selectivity in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP).

Abstract:Photocatalytic water oxidation suffers from sluggish kinetics and remains the bottleneck for water splitting. Here, using CeO2 nanorods as model photocatalyst we studied the critical role of oxygen vacancies in photo catalytic water oxidation. First CeO2 nanorods with similar morphology but different concentration of oxygen vacancies were fabricated by one-step hydrothermal method with in-situ reducing treatment. The optical absorption, charge transfer efficiency, and photocatalytic activity in oxygen generation were found closely dependent on the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Then density functional theory calculations were conducted to unveil the role of oxygen vacancies and understand the water oxidation mechanism. It was found the presence of oxygen vacancies narrows the bandgap and modulates the electronic structure for accelerating the charge transfer, in good agreement with the experimental observations. The overall oxygen generation pathway was screened and the oxygen vacancies were found to lower the barrier energy for the rate limiting step of O-O bond formation and restrain the reverse reaction of O and H, thus the O-2 generation kinetics on oxygen-defective CeO2 are improved significantly. This study provides in-depth understanding on the critical role of oxygen vacancies in photocatalytic water oxidation and is helpful for designing highly efficient photocatalyst to overcome the bottleneck of water splitting.

Abstract:Revealing the role of engineered surface oxygen vacancies in the catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of importance for the development of highly efficient catalysts. However, because of various structures of VOC molecules, the role of surface oxygen vacancies in different catalytic reactions remains ambiguous. Herein, a defective Pt/TiO2-x catalyst is proposed to uncover the different catalytic mechanisms of C3H6 and C3H8 combustion via experiments and theoretical calculations. The electron transfer, originated from the oxygen vacancy, facilitates the formation of reduced Pt0 species and simultaneously interfacial chemisorbed O2, thus promoting the C3H6 combustion via efficient C═C cleavage. The reduced Pt nanoparticles facilitate the robust chemisorption of bridging dimer O22- (Pt-O-O-Ti) species. This chemisorbed oxygen inhibits the C3H8 combustion by depressing C3H8 adsorption. This work offers insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for activating the C═C bond in alkene or C-H bond in alkane.
Probing the Actual Role and Activity of Oxygen Vacancies in Toluene Catalytic Oxidation: Evidence from in Situ XPS/NEXAFS and DFT Plus U Calculation

Abstract:Metal oxide catalysts like CeO2 exhibit promising prospects to replace the currently used noble metal catalysts in the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Although the oxygen vacancy is regarded as an active site of these novel catalysts in VOC elimination (e.g., toluene), its actual function and activity remain unclear due to the limitation in following its dynamic evolution during reactions. Meanwhile, because the oxygen vacancy involves the generation-consumption cycle of reactive oxygen species rather than being constant, this barrier causes a deficient understanding of oxygen species backfilling in rate-determining steps. Hence, CeO2-based catalysts with varying oxygen vacancy concentrations were synthesized for toluene oxidation through the tensile-strained lattice and electron deficit induced by cobalt doping. The evolutions of oxygen vacancies and oxygen species were directly followed by means of in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure. Evidence was captured that oxygen vacancies directly participate in the subsurface storage and diffusion of reactive oxygen species besides their surface regeneration. This mechanism reflects the fundamentals of oxygen storage capacity in CeO2 by providing additional oxygen species as a supplement when needed. Additionally, part of the oxygen vacancies was discerned to be not active enough in oxygen species backfilling, leaving this process as a crucial rate-determining step besides aromatic ring opening. The toluene degradation mechanism, including electrophilic adsorption sites, and how cobalt regulates oxygen vacancy activity were also revealed via in situ spectroscopy and density functional theory + U calculation.

In this study, we employed a combination of LASSO regression in machine learning, in conjunction with a cluster expansion model and first-principles calculations to decouple the interactions among the Ce3+'s and VO's, thereby circumventing the limitations associated with sampling electronic configurations. By separating these interactions, we identified specific electronic configurations characterized by the most favorable VO-Ce3+ attractions and the least Ce3+-Ce3+/VO-VO repulsions, which are crucial in determining the stability of vacancy structures. Through more than 10^8 Metropolis Monte Carlo samplings of Vo's and Ce3+ in the near-surface of CeO2(111), we explored potential configurations within an 8x8 supercell. Our findings revealed that oxygen vacancies tend to aggregate and are most abundant in the third oxygen layer, primarily due to extensive geometric relaxation-an aspect previously overlooked. This behavior is notably dependent on the concentration of Vo. This work introduces a novel theoretical framework for unraveling the complex vacancy structures in metal oxides, with potential applications in redox and catalytic chemistry.

Abstract:The irreversible formation of carbonate deposits on CeO2 leads to complete switching of catalytic selectivity resulting in the formation of benzene in gas-phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol. By integrating experimental spectra and theoretical calculations, we expect that such a shift is derived from further decarbonylation of benzaldehyde via easy trapping of CO fragments by surface carbonate species.
Crystal-Plane Effects of CeO2{110} and CeO2{100} on Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction: Synergistic Interactions of Oxygen Defects and Hydroxyl Groups

Abstract:For photocatalytic CO2 reduction, the synergistic effect of Lewis acidity and basicity on CO2 activation is worthy of study. On the basis of a large number of oxygen defects (Lewis acidity) and hydroxyl groups (Lewis basicity) on the CeO2 surface, CeO2{110} and CeO2{100} crystal planes were developed to investigate the synergistic effect on photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Compared with CeO2{100}, the surface oxygen defects were prone to generate on CeO2{110}, leading to available visible light absorption and faster photogenerated charge transfer. The experimental results and DFT calculations showed that the OH species on the CeO2{110} surface were richer and provided more electron density, i.e., Lewis basicity. Furthermore, the possible adsorption intermediate was investigated and suggested that CeO2{110} was more beneficial for the adsorption and activation of CO2 reactant than CeO2{100}, resulting in generation of carboxylate species and center dot CO2- radicals, instead of carbonate. Under the control of surface Lewis acidity and basicity, CeO2{110} had superior photocatalytic performance of CO2 reduction than the {100} plane.

Abstract:Catalytic CO2 hydrogenation on metal oxides is attractive to realize carbon neutrality initiatives. Understanding roles of oxygen vacancies of oxide-based catalysts is critical for the catalytic mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation. Herein, we used CO2 hydrogenation as model reaction on CeO2 to investigate the effects of oxygen vacancies and provided direct spectroscopic evidence for redox mechanism via in-situ DRIFTS and isotope switch experiments. A volcano-type activity curve was found for CO2 hydrogenation to CO on CeO2 upon the continuous variation of the surface defect concentration of oxygen vacancy. Kinetic analysis and ex-situ techniques indicate that surface oxygen contributes to H2 activation and oxygen vacancy accelerates the dissociation of CO2, emphasizing the unique roles of surface oxygen and oxygen vacancies, respectively. These results enrich the understanding of surface defect chemistry of CeO2 and lay an important theory foundation for design of oxide-based catalysts for hydrogenation.

Abstract:A central issue in understanding photocatalytic water splitting on a stoichiometric or defective nanostructured oxide surface is its adsorption mode and related reactivity. More than just improving the adsorption of water on oxide surfaces, we demonstrate in this work that surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) also offer a possibility of activating water toward thermodynamically enhanced photocatalytic water oxidation, while the water activation state, as reflected by its capability to trap holes, strongly depends on the structures of OVs. Utilizing well-ordered BiOCl single-crystalline surfaces, we reveal that dissociatively adsorbed water on the OV of the (010) surface exhibits higher tendency to be oxidized than the molecularly adsorbed water on the OV of the (001) surface. Analysis of the geometric atom arrangement shows that the OV of the BiOCl (010) surface can facilitate barrierless O–H bond breaking in the first proton removal reaction, which is sterically hindered on the OV of the BiOCl (001) surface, and also allow more localized electrons transfer from the OV to the dissociatively adsorbed water, leading to its higher water activation level for hole trapping. These findings highlight the indispensable role of crystalline surface structure on water oxidation and may open up avenues for the rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts via surface engineering.
