Abstract:To understand the mechanism of coalescence-induced jumping of condensate droplets on microstructured surfaces with different wettability under various gravities, the model of droplet dynamics is investigated by lattice Boltzmann method. The results indicate that the static contact angle of droplet can be increased by adding a layer of micropillar arrays. Width and spacing of micropillar arrays play a significant role on the jumping, while height of micropillar arrays has little effect on it. The microstructure with a* = 0.467, W* = 0.067 and h* = 0.5 (a =14lu, w= 2lu, h =15lu) is an optimisation strategy for the droplet (=48.6 mu m) jumping after coalescence. The gravitational force has an important impact on the jumping ability of coalescing droplets. The smaller gravitational coefficients are beneficial to the droplet jumping dynamics. In addition, surface wettability is also an important factor that couldn't be neglected. The maximum penetrated area ratio and maximum extension length decrease with the increase in fluid-solid interaction strength G(ads) (static contact angle). (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
