Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.
Two-dimensional g-C3N4/InSe heterostructure as a novel visible-light photocatalyst for overall water splitting: a first-principles study

Abstract:The enhanced visible-light harvesting, low recombination of electron-hole pairs and high carrier mobility are found in a novel g-C3N4/InSe hybrid two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure photocatalyst by using first-principles calculations for the first time. The photocatalytic mechanism of g-C3N4/InSe is comprehensively investigated. Our calculations show that 2D g-C3N4/InSe heterostructure has a direct band gap of 1.93 eV and a typical type-II band alignment with holes and electrons located in metal-free g-C3N4 monolayer and non-noble metal InSe nanosheet, respectively. A remarkable visible-light absorption can thus be expected. The electrons and holes located in InSe and g-C3N4 monolayers have a high mobility (10(4) and 10(2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)), which is beneficial for improving the catalytic efficiency. The charge density difference and type-II band structure indicate that the photo-generated electrons easily transfer from g-C3N4 monolayer to InSe nanosheet, and the holes are transferred from InSe to g-C3N4, reducing the electron-hole recombination. Compared with the well-known 2D g-C3N4/MoS2 hybrid photocatalyst composed of g-C3N4 nanosheet and MoS2 monolayer with a low electron mobility (<200 cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) and fast electron-hole recombination due to its direct bandgap, g-C3N4/InSe heterostructure photocatalyst has a distinctive advantage in improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance due to the high carrier mobility and suppressing the recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes by the indirect band gap of InSe monolayer. These clearly prove that g-C3N4/InSe is an energetic photocatalyst for overall water splitting under visible-light irradiation.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis technique for water splitting has attracted wide attention due to its potential application for solving energy crisis and environmental pollution. Among various photocatalysts, zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4) exhibits excellent performance due to its suitable band edge position and excellent visible-light absorption. Herein, rhenium disulfide (ReS2)/ZnIn2S4 heterojunctions for water splitting were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The composition of ReS2/ZnIn2S4 was fine-tuned to obtain the optimized hydrogen evolution performance without Pt cocatalysts under visible light irradiation. The results showed that ReS2/ZnIn2S4 heterostructures exhibited a superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 1858.6 μmolh−1g−1, which was about 2.8 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to higher light absorption capacity, faster charge transport, lower carrier recombination rate and more efficient photogenerated electron/hole separation.

Abstract:Enhancing the photocatalytic activity and suppressing the photocorrosion of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) remain great challenges. Herein, we established a novel heterostructured photocatalyst by stacking Zr2CO2 on a WSe2 monolayer with properties promising to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers and prevent photocorrosion existing in TMDCs. On the basis of first-principles calculations, the Zr2CO2/ WSe2 system exhibits a direct Z-scheme band alignment with a suitable indirect bandgap of 1.35 eV. The Zr2CO2/ WSe2 heterostructure has a low binding energy and high carrier mobilities, which highly benefits the separation and transportation of photogenerated carriers. Concomitantly, the synergistic effect of Zr2CO2 and WSe2 pro-motes the anti-photocorrosion ability of WSe2 monolayer and visible light optical responses of one separate material. Moreover, the Gibbs free energy shifts to negative values and continuously decreases during the process of water splitting into oxygen without additional overpotential under neural conditions, satisfying the thermo-dynamic requirements for water splitting. The solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of the Zr2CO2/WSe2 is calculated to be 15.57%. These findings shed new insight into the development of the visible-light response Z -scheme system for the high performance and stability of heterostructured photocatalysts.

Abstract:Efficient water splitting for H2 evolution over semiconductor photocatalysts is highly attractive in the field of clean energy. It is of great significance to construct heterojunctions, among which the direct Z-scheme nanocomposite photocatalyst provides effective separation of photo-generated carriers to boost the photocatalytic performance. Herein, Z-scheme hydrated tungsten trioxide/ZnIn2S4 is fabricated via an in-situ hydrothermal method where ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown on WO3⋅xH2O. The close contact between WO3⋅0.5H2O and WO3⋅0.33H2O as well as ZnIn2S4 improve the charge carrier separation and migration in the photocatalyst, where the strong reducing electrons in the conduction band of ZnIn2S4 and the strong oxidizing holes in the valence band of WO3⋅0.33H2O are retained, leading to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production. The obtained WO3⋅xH2O/ZnIn2S4 shows an excellent H2 production rate of 7200 μmol g-1h-1, which is 11 times higher than pure ZnIn2S4. To the best of our knowledge, this value is higher than most of the WO3-based noble metal-free semiconductor photocatalysts. The improved stability and activity are attributed to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which can markedly accelerate the interfacial charge separation for surface reaction. This work offers a promising strategy towards the design of efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst to suppress electron-hole recombination and optimize redox potential.

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we investigated the photocatalytic mechanism of two dimensional van der Waals CdS/InSe heterostructures (HSs). Our results show that the buckling distortion of a CdS monolayer sheet in the CdS/InSe HSs induces a built-in polarized electric field, which significantly changes the band edge positions of the InSe layer. The band alignment indicated that the photogenerated electrons in the conduction band (CB) of the InSe monolayer have a high possibility of recombining with the holes in the valence band (VB) of the CdS sheet, resulting in the electrons in the CB of CdS participating in a reduction reaction and the holes in the VB of InSe taking part in an oxidation reaction. This direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system can lead to spatial separation of photogenerated carriers and excellent rcdox ability, thus enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency. Meanwhile, CdS/InSe HSs can significantly extend the range of light harvesting from visible light to infrared light. Similar results can also be found in the CdS/InSe@2 HSs constructed by InSe bilayer deposit on a CdS nanosheet. These results indicate that CdS/InSe HSs are promising photocatalysts for water splitting.
A Direct Z-Scheme Van Der Waals Heterojunction (WO3 Center Dot H2O/g-C3N4) for High Efficient Overall Water Splitting under Visible-Light

Abstract:Achieving overall water splitting is crucial for the effective application of recycling solar energy. Here, we design and construct a direct Z-scheme van der Waals heterojunction composed by ultrathin WO3H2O and g-C3N4 nanosheets to achieve efficient overall water splitting without adding any sacrificial agents. This WO3H2O/g-C3N4 system can efficiently transport the electrons, which leading to a considerable improvement in the photocatalytic performance. Due to the suitable band edge potentials for H-2, O-2 evolution, and remarkable charge transfer, the direct WO3H2O/g-C3N4 Z-scheme system exhibits prominent photocatalytic activity for both H-2 and O-2 production under visible-light illumination, the H-2, O-2 production rate up to 482 and 232 mu molg(-1)h(-1) respectively, which is greatly higher than the H-2 evolution of g-C3N4 nanosheets (109 mu molh(-1)g(-1)) and the O-2 evolution of WO3H2O nanosheets (57 mu molh(-1)g(-1)) under the same condition. The measured quantum efficiency of the WO3H2O/g-C3N4 heterojunction reaches 6.2% at 420nm.

Abstract:The stability, electronic structures and photocatalytic applications of GeH/InSe heterostructure are studied through first-principles calculations. The GeH/InSe heterostructure can be used as a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst for overall water splitting due to the influence of the built-in electric field and the interface band bending. The heterostructure exhibits a lower exciton binding energy than their individual constituents, indicating the effective separation of electron-hole pairs. Electron mobilities along transport directions are two orders of magnitude greater than hole mobilities, which further prompts the carriers separation rate. The heterostructure's solar-to-hydrogen efficiency is 24.72 % at pH = 0, indicating great application prospects in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Very recently, the septuple-atomic-layer MoSi2N4 has been successfully synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition method. However, pristine MoSi2N4 exhibits some shortcomings, including poor visible-light harvesting capability and a low separation rate of photo-excited electron-hole pairs, when it is applied in water splitting to produce hydrogen. Fortunately, we find that MoSi2N4 can be considered as a good co-catalyst to be stacked with InSe forming an efficient heterostructure photocatalyst. Here, the electronic and photocatalytic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) InSe/MoSi2N4 heterostructure have been systematically investigated by density functional theory for the first time. The results demonstrate that 2D InSe/MoSi2N4 has a type-II band alignment with a favourable direct bandgap of 1.61 eV and exhibits suitable band edge positions for overall water splitting. Particularly, 2D InSe/MoSi2N4 has high electron mobility (104 cm2 V-1 s-1) and shows a noticeable optical absorption coefficient (105 cm-1) in the visible-light region of the solar spectrum. These brilliant properties declare that 2D InSe/MoSi2N4 is a potential photocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Abstract:It has been shown that adopting two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors as photocatalyst for water splitting can be a promising way to achieve green and clean energy. We investigate the heterostructure generated by α -In2Se3 and arsenene (Are) semiconductors manufactured on a wide scale with excellent quality. For water splitting at pH 0, the α -In2Se3/Are heterostructures are shown to provide a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic process that prevents electron–hole recombination and holding an appropriate band edge energy potential for driving the redox reaction. According to the estimated charge density, the Are monolayer is positively charged whereas the α -In2Se3 monolayer is negatively charged. By calculating the Gibbs free energy of the intermediate reactants in water splitting process, α -In2Se3/Are heterostructure demonstrated to be an excellent catalyst for HER and OER. More importantly, the α -In2Se3/Are heterostructures have quite high solar-to hydrogen (STH) efficiency (57.08% for A 1 and 24.67% for B 3 ), significantly enhanced compared with isolated α -In2Se3 (18.39%) or Are (6.05%) monolayers. All of data suggest that this α -In2Se3/Are heterostructure with direct Z-scheme can be utilized in photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:van der Waals heterostructures are widely used in the field of photocatalysis due to the fact that their properties can be regulated via an external electric field, strain engineering, interface rotation, alloying, doping, etc. to promote the capacity of discrete photogenerated carriers. Herein, we fabricated an innovative heterostructure by piling monolayer GaN on isolated WSe2. Subsequently, a first principles calculation based on density functional theory was performed to verify the two-dimensional GaN/WSe2 heterostructure and explore its interface stability, electronic property, carrier mobility and photocatalytic performance. The results demonstrated that the GaN/WSe2 heterostructure has a direct Z-type band arrangement and possesses a bandgap of 1.66 eV. The built-in electric field is caused by the transfer of positive charge between the WSe2 layers to the GaN layer, directly leading to the segregation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The GaN/WSe2 heterostructure has high carrier mobility, which is conducive to the transmission of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the Gibbs free energy changes to a negative value and declines continuously during the water splitting reaction into oxygen without supplementary overpotential in a neural environment, satisfying the thermodynamic demands of water splitting. These findings verify the enhanced photocatalytic water splitting under visible light and can be used as the theoretical basis for the practical application of GaN/WSe2 heterostructures.

Abstract:Employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we explore the excellent performance of the two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor In2Te5 in the field of photocatalytic water splitting at the theoretical level. The calculated results illustrate that the 2D In2Te5 is a direct band gap semiconductor with moderate value and ultrahigh optical absorption coefficient in the visible light region. It can be found that its conduction band edge is higher than the reduction potential of water (-4.44 eV), which proves that it can split water to produce hydrogen. Furthermore, the excellent hydrogen evolution activity can be tuned under an appropriate biaxial strain. In addition, 2D In2Te5 shows the remarkable photo-generated current, suggesting that electrons and holes can separate efficiently. Our results offer a superior candidate material for realizing photocatalytic water decomposing to hydrogen evolution.

C7N6/Sc2CCl2 Weak Van Der Waals Heterostructure: A Promising Visible-Light-Driven Z-Scheme Water Splitting Photocatalyst with Interface Ultrafast Carrier Recombination.

Abstract:Designing and characterizing high-efficiency direct Z-scheme photocatalysts both from theoretical and experimental aspects still remain a big challenge. Here, based on extensive first-principles calculations combined with excited state dynamics simulations, we report that a weak van der Waals (vdW) C7N6/Sc2CCl2 heterostructure is a mediator-free direct Z-scheme photocatalyst for solar water splitting. Theoretical results clearly reveal that this heterostructure displays a nice light-harvesting performance extending to the near-infrared region. The relatively strong interfacial non-adiabatic coupling accelerates the interlayer carrier recombination in the time scale of sub-picoseconds. The well separated electrons and holes with a strong redox capacity make the hydrogen evolution reaction spontaneously occur on the C7N6 surface and the oxygen evolution reaction on the Se-doped Sc2CCl2 surface, respectively, when the proposed heterostructure is radiated with solar light.

Abstract:In this work, the structural, electronic and optical properties of the In2SeS/g-C3N4 heterostructure are investigated to explore a highly efficient and spontaneous water splitting photocatalyst by first-principles calculations. The results show that the In2SeS/g-C3N4 heterostructure with a bandgap (E-g) of 2.03 eV is a typical type II semiconductor, which guarantees that the generated electrons and holes can be effectively separated. The potential of the conduction band minimum (CBM) and the valence band maximum (VBM) satisfies the requirements for photocatalytic water splitting. Meanwhile, the In2SeS/g-C3N4 heterostructure has a strong light-absorption ability, and mainly absorbs purple and blue light. In addition, the changes of Gibbs free energy (Delta G) are calculated to understand the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process of water splitting. Under neutral conditions (pH = 7), the Gibbs free energy continuously decreases during the OER process, verifying the thermodynamic feasibility of water splitting through the In2SeS/g-C3N4 heterostructure. Hence, the In2SeS/g-C3N4 heterostructure is a kind of photocatalyst with excellent performance in the area of photocatalytic water splitting.
Mechanism of the two-dimensional WSeTe/Zr2CO2 direct Z-scheme van der Waals heterojunction as a photocatalyst for water splitting

Abstract:The direct Z-scheme van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions based on biomimetic artificial photosynthesis are a promising strategy for enhancing photocatalytic activity. Therefore, the search for superior direct Z-scheme photocatalysts is an urgent task. Herein, we predicted the WSeTe/Zr2CO2 heterostructure as a potential direct Z-scheme photocatalyst based on density functional theory (DFT). The bands of the WSeTe/Zr2CO2 heterojunction follow a typical Type-II arrangement, where the interlayer band gap is smaller than that of the individual molecular layers, and staggered alignment of the large band-edge creates conditions that allow for a direct Z-scheme. The position of the Fermi energy levels of the two monolayers determines the formation of the built-in electric field pointing from WSeTe to Zr2CO2, promoting the desired interlayer electron-hole (e--h+) recombination and suppressing the undesired carrier recombination. Finally, in-plane biaxial strain can effectively modulate the optoelectronic properties of the catalyst, while compressive strain has a more pronounced effect on the overpotential driving force of the material. Therefore, the WSeTe/Zr2CO2 heterojunction is an effective new photocatalyst satisfying the direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism with its specific application.

Abstract:The development of high-performance direct-Z Scheme heterojunctions as photocatalysts is the focus of current research, and it is also an effective way to improve the performance of photocatalysts. Based on this, we use density functional theory (DFT) to predict two-dimensional (2D) XSe 2 /SiH (X = Zr, Sn) van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction as a potential direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. The results indicate that both heterojunctions exhibit a typical Type-II band edge arrangement. Furthermore, the small band gap and built-in electric field of the heterojunctions facilitate electronic transitions between the valence band (VB) and conduction band (CB), thereby increasing the probability of interlayer electron–hole (e − -h + ) recombination within the heterojunction. This process is beneficial for the formation of direct-Z Scheme heterojunctions. In addition, the XSe 2 /SiH (X = Zr, Sn) heterojunction exhibits remarkable photogenerated electron and hole driving forces, along with exceptional light-trapping capabilities. Therefore, XSe 2 /SiH (X = Zr, Sn) heterojunction is a potential new photocatalyst.

Direct Z-scheme GaSe/ZrS2 Heterojunction for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:In this paper, a novel GaSe/ZrS2 heterojunction is designed and systematically studied. The monolayers in this heterojunction can be easily fabricated and the heterojunction has good stability. More importantly, electronic structures, band alignment, differential charge density and the built-in electric field show that it is a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst that can not only effectively separate photogenerated carriers but also improve the redox ability of carriers. The mobility of the electrons in this heterostructure is as large as 1450.38 cm2V−1s−1 (same magnitude order of black phosphorene) along the zigzag direction, which is beneficial to photocatalytic performance. The band alignment shows that GaSe/ZrS2 is suitable for overall water splitting and the splitting can happen spontaneously. Moreover, GaSe/ZrS2 heterojunction has excellent absorption coefficients (higher than 105cm−1) in both visible and ultraviolet ranges which is very beneficial to photocatalytic overall water splitting. The study of electric field and biaxial strain effects on GaSe/ZrS2 heterojunction show that the light absorption coefficients of GaSe/ZrS2 heterojunction can be obviously further improved by applying biaxial strain. Our work shows that GaSe/ZrS2 heterojunction is a promising photocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The direct Z-scheme system constructed by two-dimensional (2D) materials is an efficient route for hydrogen production from photocatalytic water splitting. In the present work, the 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions of MoSe2/SnS2, MoSe2/SnSe2, MoSe2/CrS2, MoTe2/SnS2, MoTe2/SnSe2, and MoTe2/CrS2 are proposed to be promising candidates for direct Z-scheme photocatalysts and verified by first principles calculations. Perpendicular electric field is induced in these 2D vdW heterojunctions, which enhances the efficiency of solar energy utilization. Replacing MoSe2 with MoTe2 not only facilitates the interlayer carrier migration, but also improves the optical absorption properties for these heterojunctions. Excitingly, the 2D vdW MoTe2/CrS2 heterojunction is demonstrated, for the first time, to be 2D near-infrared-light driven photocatalyst for direct Z-scheme water splitting. Two-dimensional SnS2/ZrSi2N4 Van Der Waals Heterojunction As a Spontaneously Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Photocatalyst

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting driven by photon excitation is a promising method for generating clean energy. This study focuses on designing a two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction photocatalyst, created by vertically stacking SnS2 and ZrSi2N4. The intrinsic mechanisms and hydrogen evolution potential of this system were systematically investigated using first-principles calculations. The results demonstrate that the SnS2/ ZrSi2N4 heterojunction is a type II heterojunction with an indirect band gap, and the staggered energy bands effectively separate the photogenerated carriers and enhance photocatalytic efficiency. Additionally, the near- ideal band gap of 2.30 eV ensures good light absorption while providing sufficient driving force for water decomposition. The band-edge positions of the heterojunction span the redox potential of water, which means that, in aqueous solutions with a pH range of 0-4, the external potential generated by photogenerated electrons is adequate to spontaneously drive hydrogen evolution through water splitting. Simultaneously, the Gibbs free energy (Delta G =-0.11 eV) being close to zero indicates that this heterojunction can effectively facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, the exceptional electron mobility (2048.38 cm2 & sdot;V- 1 & sdot; S- 1 ), hole mobility (4299.49 cm2 & sdot;V- 1 & sdot; S- 1 ), and solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of up to 17.92 % underscore its immense potential as an effective photocatalyst. This work offers innovative approaches for achieving efficient photocatalytic water decomposition, advancing the development of clean energy solutions.
