Abstract:A three dimensional (3D) volume-of-fluid-based (VOF-based) flow model coupled with discrete element method (DEM) is proposed and implemented and then applied to simulate the dynamic permeability evolution of hydraulic fractures under various closing stresses in the present study. The fluids are modeled by a continuum-based approach under the Eulerian Framework. Fluid flows through the pore throats are modeled by VOF-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Meanwhile, fracturing of the rock is modeled by particle bond breakage and detachment, and the redistribution and embedment of proppant are captured by DEM model without considering cement bond. Then, the results from DEM modeling provide the pore structure of propped fracture to CFD solver for further conducting pore-scale simulation. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to systematically evaluate the permeability and its variation under different proppant sizes, Young's moduli and pressure levels. The results reveal that the more soft shale particle, the higher pressure and the smaller proppant size imply smaller permeability. Laboratory bench-scale experiments, the calibration tests, and model validations, are conducted to ensure the effectiveness of this coupled 3D VOF-based CFD model and 3D DEM in modeling the deformation of proppant-filled hydraulic fractures and predicting the permeability evolution of fractures. The numerical results are consistent with the experimental results.
