Abstract:The intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and overuse of expensive and unstable Pt-based catalysts have severely hampered the development of clean energy technologies. Herein, a type of non-noble metal nanozyme as an ORR electrocatalyst, with Fe-Cu dual atomic sites embedded in three-dimensional porous N-doped carbon (FeCu-DA/NC), is fabricated by mimicking both the constituents of active centers and enzymatic microenvironment of Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO). The atomically dispersed Fe-Cu single atom sites are clearly identified by direct aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy imaging, systematic X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analyses, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. FeCu-DA/NC exhibits a superior ORR activity, with about 30 mV more positive half-wave potential (E-1/2) than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts in a base, and moreover with only anE(1/2)gap of 20 mV to Pt/C in an acid. Importantly, FeCu-DA/NC displays an excellent durability under both acidic and basic conditions, which is much superior to that of Pt/C. DFT calculations further demonstrate that the enhanced performance can be attributed to the unique synergistic effect between Cu and Fe single atoms in which Cu-N(4)serves as the electron donor to increase the electron density of the active centers of Fe-N(4)and thus to facilitate O(2)activation.
A Novel CuFe-based Catalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Alkaline Media

Abstract:The primary objective of this work is to develop alternative electrocatalysts to Pt-based materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline fuel cells. We synthesized a bicore CuFe/C composite electrocatalyst by impregnation of iron and copper phthalocyanine-based complexes into a carbon support, followed by pyrolysis at 800–900 °C in an Ar atmosphere. This novel composite catalyst exhibits electrochemical performance for ORR in 0.1 M KOH similar to a commercial Pt/C (BASF Fuel Cell, 30%) catalyst at 6-fold lower CuFe loading. High resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS) results indicate that coordination bonding between Fe and N atoms still remains and show that a mixed Cu(I)/Cu(II) valency exists in the CuFe/C catalyst after high temperature heat treatment. The Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox mediator adjacent to Fe atoms is crucial to provide electrons to the NxFe–O2 adduct and maximize the overall rate of the reduction reaction. The results of this study may offer a new approach to development of efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction to water in alkaline media.

Abstract:Among clean energy transformation devices, fuel cells have gained special attention over the past years; however, advancing appropriate non-valuable metal impetuses to halfway supplant the customary Pt/C impetus is still in progress. In this paper, we propose a specific electrocatalyst in the formula of highly-active Cu species, associated with coated carbon (Cu@C-800), for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) through post-treatment of a self-assembled precursor. The optimized catalyst Cu@C-800 showed excellent ORR performance (i.e., the onset potential was 1.00 V vs. RHE, and half-wave potential of 0.81 V vs. RHE), high stability, resistance to methanol, and high four-electron selectivity. The enhancement is attributed to the synergy between the carbon matrix and a high explicit surface region and rich Cu nano-species.

Abstract:Abstract Efficient, durable and inexpensive electrocatalysts that accelerate sluggish oxygen reduction reaction kinetics and achieve high-performance are highly desirable. Here we develop a strategy to fabricate a catalyst comprised of single iron atomic sites supported on a nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur co-doped hollow carbon polyhedron from a metal-organic framework@polymer composite. The polymer-based coating facilitates the construction of a hollow structure via the Kirkendall effect and electronic modulation of an active metal center by long-range interaction with sulfur and phosphorus. Benefiting from structure functionalities and electronic control of a single-atom iron active center, the catalyst shows a remarkable performance with enhanced kinetics and activity for oxygen reduction in both alkaline and acid media. Moreover, the catalyst shows promise for substitution of expensive platinum to drive the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction in zinc-air batteries and hydrogen-air fuel cells.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed transition metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts are emerging as low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. However, a cost-effective and scalable synthesis strategy for these catalysts is still required, as well as a greater understanding of their mechanisms. Herein, iron, nitrogen co-doped carbon spheres (Fe@NCS) have been prepared via hydrothermal carbonization and high-temperature post carbonization. It is determined that FeN4 is the main form of iron existing in the obtained Fe@NCS. Two different precursors containing Fe2+ and Fe3+ are compared. Both chemical and structural differences have been observed in catalysts starting from Fe2+ and Fe3+ precursors. Fe2+@NCS-A (starting with Fe2+ precursor) shows better catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. This catalyst is studied in an anion exchange membrane fuel cell. The high open-circuit voltage demonstrates the potential approach for developing high-performance, low-cost fuel cell catalysts.

Abstract:The development of cost-effective and highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is an essential component of renewable clean energy technologies, such as fuel cells and metal/air cells, but remains a huge and long-term challenge. Here, novel heterogeneous Cu/CuO nanoparticles embedded within N-doped carbon nanosheets (Cu/CuO@NC-900) are successfully synthesized by combining a facile hydrothermal route with a solid calcination technique. Benefitting from the electronic interaction between Cu and CuO, the generated abundant highly active Cu-Nx active sites and the high conductivity of the N-doped carbon nanosheets, the resulting Cu/CuO@NC-900 material shows superior ORR performance in alkaline media, exhibiting a high half-wave potential of ~0.868 V, and a robust stability and methanol tolerance, even outperforming commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. Our study opens up a new avenue for the rational design and fabrication of efficient and durable noble-metal-free Cu-based electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Au-segregated intermetallic AuCu3/C nanoparticles with uniform dispersion and narrow size distribution around 3 nm are reported by D. Xia, J. Li, and colleagues on page 2662. These nanoparticles have excellent catalytic performance for ORR in alkaline solution, excellent durability, as well as methanol tolerance activities. The enhanced activities mainly result from the synergetic effects between electroactive Au and Cu atoms on the particle surface: Cu activates O2 adsorption, and Au promotes OH–desorption.

Abstract:In situ growth of intertwined trinuclear copper complexes (nCu3) on a cellulose-derived carbon support (CMC) produced a high-performance electrocatalyst (CMC-nCu3) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which demonstrated superior performance in zinc-air batteries compared to a commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work highlights the importance of copper-based molecular catalysts with rich and intertwined tricopper structures for boosting both ORR activity and stability.

Abstract:Rational design of oxygen electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term durability is currently a severe challenge for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Here, we highlighted an electronic structure engineering on Cu-based catalyst with atomically dispersed Cu-N3S1 active sites, representing as highly active electrode material for oxygen reduction. The structurally-new Cu-N3S1 species shows unique electron interactions with both phosphorus atoms/carbon support, which not only activate the electron transfer around the Cu-N3S7 sites but also enhance the interaction with oxygenated species, resulting in a promoting reaction kinetics process. As expected, this catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity for oxygen reduction and evolution. A rechargeable flexible solid Zn-air battery based on this catalyst behaves superior performance of a high open-circuit voltage (1.41 V), a large power density (138.2 mW/cm(2)), and a small charge/discharge voltage gap (0.72 V at 2.0 mA cm(-2)) even under different bending angles. Specifically, this strategy is general and can be extended to other metal single atom catalyst systems (such as Fe-N3S1 species). This work will open a new avenue to design structurally-new single atom catalysts for energy-related field.

Abstract:Replacing expensive platinum oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts is an effective way to improve the energy conversion efficiency of fuel cells. Herein, a series of single-atom catalysts, TM-N2O2Cx (TM=Sc-Zn) with TM-N2O2 active units, were designed, and their catalytic performance for electrocatalytic O2 reduction was investigated based on density functional theory. The results show that TM-N2O2Cx exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability in acidic media. The eight catalysts (TM=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) are all 4e- reaction paths, among which Sc-N2O2Cx, Ti-N2O2Cx, and V-N2O2Cx follow dissociative mechanisms and the rest are consistent with associative mechanisms. In particular, Co-N2O2Cx and Ni-N2O2Cx enable a smooth reduction in O2 at small overpotentials (0.44 V and 0.49 V, respectively). Furthermore, a linear relationship between the adsorption free energies of the ORR oxygen-containing intermediates was evident, leading to the development of a volcano plot for the purpose of screening exceptional catalysts for ORR. This research will offer a novel strategy for the design and fabrication of exceptionally efficient non-precious metal catalysts on an atomic scale.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts to replace the precious Pt/C is very important for the industrial application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, using bismuth-based metal–organic frameworks as the substrate to disperse copper ions, we prepared a catalyst containing both Cu single atoms and Cu nanoparticles (Cu SA Cu NP /BiCN) by a pyrolysis method. In 0.1 M KOH electrolyte, the electrocatalytic ORR performance of Cu SA Cu NP /BiCN was superior to that of commercial Pt/C. With a hierarchical porous architecture, Cu SA Cu NP /BiCN displayed a half-wave potential of 0.86 V vs. RHE and a diffusion-limiting current density of 5.82 mA cm −2 with a four-electron transfer process. In addition, it was stable during a 12-hour durability test. This study provides guidance for the synthesis of advanced Cu-based nano-single-atom catalytic materials for ORR applications.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 could play an important role in addressing climate-change issues and global energy demands as part of a carbon-neutral energy cycle. Single-atom catalysts can display outstanding electrocatalytic performance; however, given their single-site nature they are usually only amenable to reactions that involve single molecules. For processes that involve multiple molecules, improved catalytic properties could be achieved through the development of atomically dispersed catalysts with higher complexities. Here we report a catalyst that features two adjacent copper atoms, which we call an ‘atom-pair catalyst’, that work together to carry out the critical bimolecular step in CO2 reduction. The atom-pair catalyst features stable Cu10–Cu1x+ pair structures, with Cu1x+ adsorbing H2O and the neighbouring Cu10 adsorbing CO2, which thereby promotes CO2 activation. This results in a Faradaic efficiency for CO generation above 92%, with the competing hydrogen evolution reaction almost completely suppressed. Experimental characterization and density functional theory revealed that the adsorption configuration reduces the activation energy, which generates high selectivity, activity and stability under relatively low potentials.

Abstract:Rational design of cost‐effective and active electrocatalysts is an essential step toward the large‐scale realization of hydrogen fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Its success requires a drastic improvement in the kinetics of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a novel ORR catalyst formed by encapsulating thin Cu layer decorated Co nanoparticles inside graphitic carbon layers that are embedded with abundant CoNx and CuNx atomic sites (denoted as SA‐CoCu@Cu/CoNP), is reported. The multicomponent SA‐CoCu@Cu/CoNP composite exhibits a remarkable ORR catalytic activity, exceptional stability, and excellent methanol tolerance in alkaline media, outperforming the commercial platinum carbon under identical testing conditions and also being active in acidic media. The excellent ORR catalytic performance is ascribed to the modified electronic structure of the CoNx active sites due to an electron donating effect from the embedded nanoparticles and the nearby CuNx species, as revealed by X‐ray spectroscopic results and density functional theory computations. Moreover, the effective role of CuNx sites in suppressing the peroxide formation during ORR is also identified, endowing the resultant catalyst a prolonged stability and enhanced efficiency that are beneficial for practical applications.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed M-N-C (M refers to transition metals) materials represent the most promising catalyst alternatives to the precious metal Pt for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen (ORR), yet the genuine active sites in M-N-C remain elusive. Here, we develop a two-step approach to fabricate Cu-N-C single-atom catalysts with a uniform and well-defined Cu2+-N4 structure that exhibits comparable activity and superior durability in comparison to Pt/C. By combining operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy with theoretical calculations, we unambiguously identify the dynamic evolution of Cu-N4 to Cu-N3 and further to HO-Cu-N2 under ORR working conditions, which concurrently occurs with reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+ and is driven by the applied potential. The increase in the Cu+/Cu2+ ratio with the reduced potential indicates that the low-coordinated Cu+-N3 is the real active site, which is further supported by DFT calculations showing the lower free energy in each elemental step of the ORR on Cu+-N3 than on Cu2+-N4. Abstract:At present, fuel cell is considered to be one of the most ideal application technologies of hydrogen energy. In order to develop fuel cells on a large scale and in a sustainable way, low platinum or non-platinum oxygen reduction catalyst has become a research hotspot. In this work, a kind of doped carbon-based catalyst MPFe1Cu1-850 is prepared by high temperature synthesis. The catalyst has an ultra-thin lamellar porous structure. In an acidic medium, the MPFe1Cu1-850 displays good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (ΔE1/2 = 0.725 V). In addition, it shows better stability (91%) and higher methanol tolerance than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst. In our catalyst MPFe1Cu1-850, the contents of nitrogen, iron and copper are 10.31 at.%, 0.51 at.%, and 0.50 at.%, respectively. Abstract:Single-atom catalysts have drawn great attention, especially in electrocatalysis. However, most of previous works focus on the enhanced catalytic properties via improving metal loading. Engineering morphologies of catalysts to facilitate mass transport through catalyst layers, thus increasing the utilization of each active site, is regarded as an appealing way for enhanced performance. Herein, we design an overhang-eave structure decorated with isolated single-atom iron sites via a silica-mediated MOF-templated approach for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis. This catalyst demonstrates superior ORR performance in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes, comparable to the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst and superior to most precious-metal-free catalysts reported to date. This activity originates from its edge-rich structure, having more three-phase boundaries with enhanced mass transport of reactants to accessible single-atom iron sites (increasing the utilization of active sites), which verifies the practicability of such a synthetic approach.

Abstract:The exploration of direct and effective strategies to construct catalysts with targeted active sites is highly desired. Herein, we report a self-template strategy to fabricate Cu/Fe dual-metal-atoms active sites anchored on MOF-derived porous carbon nanosheets (Cu/Fe/N–CNS). Well-defined Cu/Fe/N–CNS performs outstanding electrocatalytic ORR activity with half-wave potential (0.91 V) in alkaline solution, which outperforms commercial Pt/C catalyst. DFT computational studies indicate that Fe–N active sites on Cu/Fe/N–CNS are more favored than Cu–N active sites for the activation of O–O-containing intermediate products to further boost electrocatalytic activity. Furthermore, Cu/Fe/N–CNS exhibits superior discharge stability with negligible voltage fading over 20 cycles (∼150 h) at 15 mA cm−2 in primary Zn-air batteries. This strategy can open new avenues for the construction of superb dual-metal catalysts.
