Abstract:Variations of fluorescence intensity ratio of green (generated from Er3+ 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 levels) and red (generated from the sublevels of Er3+ 4F9/2 level) upconversion emissions in Er3+/Yb3+/Li+:ZrO2 nanocrystals have been studied as a function of temperature under 976nm laser diode excitation. In the temperature range of 323–673K, the maximum sensitivities of about 0.0134K−1 and 0.0104K−1 are obtained by using green and red emission, respectively. Er3+/Yb3+/Li+:ZrO2 nanocrystals show potential application value in nanoscale thermal sensor.

Abstract:Fluorescence thermometry manifests tremendous attention for their potential applications in the temperature sensing, especially for combining wide operating temperature range with high sensitivity. However, the use of thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) for temperature measurement has strict requirements for energy difference, which limits the sensitivity of detection. In order to satisfy higher sensitivity sensing, the pair of non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCLs) of 4S3/2 and 3H4 has been innovatively designed. Herein, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm co-doped LuScO3 single crystal fibers (SCFs) had been delicately grown by Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry was realized based on the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2 (545~593nm) and Tm3+:3H4→3H6 (750~850nm) NTCLs. Such an obvious FIR-temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high-sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.
Anomalous Thermal activating green upconversion luminescence in Yb/Er/ZnGdO self-assembled microflowers for high-sensitivity temperature detection

Abstract:Non-contact optical temperature detection has shown great promise in biological systems and microfluidics because of outstanding spatial resolution, superior accuracy, and its non-invasive nature. However, thermal quenching of photoluminescence significantly hinders the practical applications of optical temperature probes. Herein, we report a thermal enhanced green upconversion luminescence in Yb/Er/ZnGdO microflowers by defects-assisted thermal distribution mechanism. A 1.6-fold enhancement of green emission is implemented as the temperature increased from 298 K to 558 K. Experiment results and dynamic analysis demonstrate that this behavior of thermal activating green upconversion luminescence origins from emission losses compensation, which is ascribed by thermal-induced energy transfer from defects levels to green emitting level. In addition, the Yb/Er/ZnGdO microflowers can act as self-referenced radiometric optical thermometers. The ultrahigh absolute sensitivity of 1.61% K-1 and superb relative sensitivity of 15.5% K-1 based on the 4F9/2/2H11/2(2) level pair are synchronously achieved at room temperature. These finding provides a novel strategy to surmount thermal quenching luminescence, thereby greatly promoting the application of non-contact sensitive radiometric thermometer.

Engineering Visible to Near-Infrared Luminescence through a Selective Doping Strategy for High-Performance Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Luminescence nanothermometers have garnered considerable attention due to their noncontact measurement, high spatial resolution, and rapid response. However, many nanothermometers employing single-mode measurement encounter challenges regarding their relative sensitivity. Herein, a unique class of tunable upconversion (UC) and downshifting (DS) luminescence covering the visible to near-infrared range (400-1700 nm) is reported, characterized by the superior Tm3+, Ho3+, and Er3+ emissions induced by efficient energy transfer. The outstanding negative thermal expansion characteristic of ScF3 nanocrystals has been found to guide excitation energy toward the relevant emitting states in the Yb3+-Ho3+-Tm3+-codoped system, consequently resulting in remarkable near-infrared III (NIR-III) luminescence at ∼1625 nm (Tm3+:3F4 → 3H6 transition), which in turn presents numerous opportunities for designing multimode ratiometric luminescence thermometry. Furthermore, by facilitating phonon-assisted energy transfer in Er3+-Ho3+-codoped systems, the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) of 4I13/2 of Er3+ and 5I6 of Ho3+ in ScF3:Yb3+/Ho3+/Er3+ exhibits a strong temperature dependence, enabling NIR-II/III luminescence thermometry with superior thermal sensitivity and resolution (Sr = 0.78% K-1, δT = 0.64 K). These findings not only underscore the distinctive and ubiquitous attributes of lanthanide ion-doped nanomaterials but also hold significant implications for crafting luminescence thermometers with unparalleled sensitivity.

Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:Luminescence intensity ratio (LIR)-based thermometry has the advantages of high relative sensitivity, fast temperature response, and high spatial resolution. However, the current LIR-based systems are mainly based on thermally coupled energy levels, which have low sensitivity due to the intrinsic limitation of the Boltzmann distribution theory. Here, we report a design of a core-shell-shell nanostructure to improve the thermal sensitivity by using the nonthermally coupled upconversion emissions. Ho3+ and Tm3+ were selected as emitters and spatially separated by an inert interlayer. The upconverted Tm3+ emissions show a dramatical thermal enhancement while the Ho3+ emissions show a decline with increasing temperature, resulting in a huge LIR (695 nm/645 nm) contrast and thereafter a high relative sensitivity (9.78% K-1 at room temperature). In addition, this nanostructure design presents a color change from red to blue at different excitation powers and also from red to green by tuning the excitation laser pulse widths. These results hold great potential in the field of noncontact ultrasensitive temperature sensors and multimodel anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:Different from the popular H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2)-I-4(15/2) emission bands of Er3+, here we demonstrate for the first time the temperature detecting ability of the F-4(7/2)/S-4(3/2)- - I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ embedded in NaYF4 nanocrystals via luminescent ratiometric method. Following the NIR irradiation at 980 nm, the characteristic H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) - I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+, and the F-4(7/2)-I-4(15/2) emission line that is rarely studied are successfully detected. The F-4(7/2)/H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) excited states are found to own the same lifetime. By studying on the temperature dependent upconversion luminescence, the F-4(7/2)/S-4(3/2) states, and the H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) ones are both confirmed to be thermally coupled. The luminescence intensity ratio between each pair of states thus could be used for thermal sensing. Using the F-4(7/2)/(S3/2I15/2)-S-4-I-4 emission bands could achieve a larger relative sensitivity than the traditional H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2)-I-4(15/2) ones in the range of 332-483 K. Therefore, our work proposes a promising candidate for temperature measurement, which may find its application in the future.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase NaLuF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanorods were synthesized hydrothermally. An analysis of the intense green upconversion emissions at 525 nm and 550 nm in hexagonal phase NaLuF4:Yb-3/Er-+(3+) nanorods under excitation power density of 4.2 W/cm(2) available from a diode laser emitting at 976 nm, have been undertaken. Fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) variation of temperature-sensitive green upconversion emissions at 525 nm and 550 nm in this material was recorded in the physiological range from 295 to 343 K. The maximum sensitivity derived from the FIR technique of the green upconversion emissions is approximately 0.0044 K-1. Experimental results implied that hexagonal phase NaLuF4:Yb-3/Er-+(3+) nanorods was a potential candidate for optical temperature sensor.
Study on the Thermal Sensitivity of Β-Nayf4: Yb3+-Er3+ Nano-Thermometers Based on Luminescence Ratiometric Technology

Abstract:It is demonstrated here that relative sensitivity should gain more concern than absolute sensitivity when designing a new type of nano-thermometer based on luminescence ratiometric technology. Following the NIR excitation by a 980 nm laser diode, the 520/527 and 540/547 nm upconversion luminescence bands, which are respectively ascribed to the H-2(11/2)-I-4(15/2) and S-4(3/2)-I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ions embedded in NaYF4 nano-crystals, are investigated as a function of temperature between 303 and 483 K. It is found that the 520/540, 520/547, 527/540 and 527/547 nm emission lines can constitute four pairs of thermally coupled energy levels. These four pairs of lines own the different absolute sensitivities. However, the relative sensitivities for them are identical at the same temperature. A third parameter, that is, temperature resolution, is then introduced to identify the difference between the two sensitivities. It is found that these four pairs of lines own the same temperature resolution, suggesting that absolute sensitivity is an intermediate parameter and relative sensitivity reflects the fundamental nature of sensors.

Abstract:Variations of fluorescence intensity ratio of green upconversion emissions in Er3+:Y2O3 nanocrystals and their bulk counterpart have been studied as a function of temperature. In the temperature range of 323–773K, the maximum sensitivity of about 0.003K−1 is obtained in the samples synthesized by the conventional sol–gel method at 800°C. It is found that the upconversion emission is enhanced by a factor of about 56 after re-calcining the conventional samples at 1300°C. Besides that, the sensitivity is increased to the value of about 0.004K−1, and the sensing accuracy is also improved. With efficient upconversion luminescence, high degree of sensitivity and accuracy, Er3+ doped Y2O3 bulk counterpart show promising application in nanoscale thermal sensor.
A New Strategy for Circumventing the Limitation of Thermally Linked States and Boosting the Relative Thermal Sensitivity of Luminescence Ratiometric Thermometry

Abstract:Optical ratiometric thermometry, based on the luminescence of trivalent rare-earth ions, has attracted considerable attention because of its noncontact working pattern, short response time, and strong antidisturbance ability. However, conventional optical thermal detection, on the basis of thermally linked states, has a relatively low relative sensitivity. To circumvent the limitation, here, a new strategy for boosting the relative thermal sensitivity, especially at relatively high temperatures, is introduced. It depends on two totally different mechanisms which own the contrary temperature dependences. For one thing, when excited at 310 nm, the green luminescence originating from CaWO4:Tb3+ phosphors increases monotonously because of the red shift of the charge-transfer band of the WO42- group. For another, this luminescence shows decreasing tendency gradually upon being directly excited at 380 nm. Thus, the intensity ratio between the luminescence obtained at two different excitation conditions is exploited for optical thermometry with success. By using this strategy, the relative thermal sensitivity is as high as 0.71% K-1 at 783 K, which is increased by more than fourfold compared with the conventional method that depends on the thermally coupled states of the Er3+ ion, which are the H-2(11/2) and S-4(3/2) states. Moreover, this value is also among the highest sensitivities reported so far for ratiometric thermal sensing. What is more, it has been demonstrated that the sensitivity can be adjusted easily by changing the excitation wavelength. Therefore, the work provides an effective strategy for boosting the thermal sensitivity for optical ratiometric thermometry, which contributes to highly sensitive thermal detection in the future.

Abstract:Upconversion nanoparticle based ratiometric nanothermometry has shown many advantages including high relative sensitivity, fast temperature response, and high spatial resolution. However, most of the existing designs are on the basis of thermally coupled upconversion emissions, and it remains a challenge to improve the thermo-sensitivity. Here, we report a new nanoplatform of NaYF4:Yb/Er/Ce@NaYF4@NaYF4:Yb/Tm core-shell-shell nanostructure to improve the thermal sensitivity through the nonthermally coupled upconversion emissions. With the increase of temperature, the green upconversion of Er3+ shows a decline while the blue upconversion of Tm3+ exhibits a rapid increase, leading to a huge contrast in both intensity ratio and emission colors. The maximum relative sensitivity can reach up to 9.86% K-1 at 303 K. It is further found that introducing Ce3+ is able to improve the sensitivity and expand the thermochromic green-to-blue gamut greatly. These results show great potential in ultrasensitive lanthanide-based nanothermometry and anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:Recently, luminescence ratiometric thermometry has gained ever-increasing attention due to its merits of rapid response, non-invasiveness, high spatial resolution, and so forth. For research fields relying on temperature measurements, achieving a higher relative sensitivity of this measurement is still an important task. In this work, we developed a strategy for achieving a more sensitive temperature measurement, one merely depending on the photoluminescence of Eu3+. We showed that using the 5D1-7F1 transition and the hypersensitive 5D0-7F2 transition of Eu3+ can boost the relative sensitivity compared with the method relying on the 5D1-7F1 and 5D0-7F1 transitions of Eu3+. The difference between these two strategies was studied and was explained by the hypersensitive 5D0-7F2 transition more steeply decreasing than the 5D0-7F1 transition with a rise in temperature. Our work is expected to help researchers design sensitive optical thermometers via proper use of this hypersensitive transition.
Three-energy-level-cascaded Strategy for a More Sensitive Luminescence Ratiometric Thermometry

Abstract:Luminescence ratiometric thermometry has gained increasing attention in recent years because of its several merits, such as non-invasive operating mode, fast response time, excellent spatial resolution, and so forth. It can be realized by using the thermally coupled energy levels (TCELs) of rare earth ions. The maximum thermal sensitivity for the TCELs-based luminescence ratiometric thermometry has been found to be similar to 2000/kT(2). Here we show that using a three-energy-level-cascaded strategy can surpass this maximum value. In scheelite host material, the (4)G(11/2)-H-6(15/2) transition of Dy3+ ion was observed successfully upon UV excitation. Moreover, the Dy3+ ion's (4)G(11/2)/I-4(15/2)/F-4(9/2) excited states were confirmed to be thermally linked with each other by studying on the photoluminescence of the as-prepared Dy3+-embedded phosphors at different temperatures. By utilizing the (4)G(11/2)/F-4(9/2) states, rather than the commonly investigated I-4(15/2)/(4)F(9/2)( )ones in the previous literatures, the relative sensitivity was found to as high as 2414/kT(2) over the experimental temperature range. It surpasses the theoretical maximum value 2000/kT(2). In the end, we study the relationship between the relative sensitivity and temperature resolution, and find that a higher relative sensitivity cannot always ensure a better temperature resolution. In order to achieve a better temperature resolution in practice, both the relative sensitivity and the relative uncertainty of the luminescence intensity ratio that is used for indicating temperature should be considered simultaneously. Abstract:In recent years, lanthanide doped materials have been extensively studied in the field of fluorescence temperature sensing due to their abundant emission levels and sensitive thermal response. Temperature sensing based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of upconversion nanoparticles has the advantages of fast temperature response, non-aggressiveness, and high spatial resolution. However, the most reported FIR sensing has limited sensitivity, probably due to the use of thermal coupling levels. Herein, we report a novel FIR temperature measurement based on non-thermal coupling levels of NaGdF4:Yb3+/Er3+@NaGdF4@NaGdF4:Yb3+/Tm3+ core-shell-shell nanostructure, which has high sensitivity and robustness simultaneously. The relative sensitivity based on I 801/I 654 and I 801/I 841 of Tm3+ to Er3+ can reach up to 4.56 (303 K) and 3.82% K−1 (313 K), respectively. Between them, FIR of I 801/I 841 is independent of excitation power and time. These results show the great potential of FIR based on non-thermal coupling levels in high-sensitive and robust temperature sensors.

Abstract:Different from the popular H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2)-I-4(15/2) emission bands of Er3+, here we demonstrate for the first time the temperature detecting ability of the F-4(7/2)/S-4(3/2)- - I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ embedded in NaYF4 nanocrystals via luminescent ratiometric method. Following the NIR irradiation at 980 nm, the characteristic H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) - I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+, and the F-4(7/2)-I-4(15/2) emission line that is rarely studied are successfully detected. The F-4(7/2)/H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) excited states are found to own the same lifetime. By studying on the temperature dependent upconversion luminescence, the F-4(7/2)/S-4(3/2) states, and the H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) ones are both confirmed to be thermally coupled. The luminescence intensity ratio between each pair of states thus could be used for thermal sensing. Using the F-4(7/2)/(S3/2I15/2)-S-4-I-4 emission bands could achieve a larger relative sensitivity than the traditional H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2)-I-4(15/2) ones in the range of 332-483 K. Therefore, our work proposes a promising candidate for temperature measurement, which may find its application in the future.

Abstract:Temperature sensors based on upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity ratio have attracted great attention due to the high sensitivity. The enhancement of UCL is helpful to improve the sensitivity of temperature sensor. Doping is an effective way to achieve the UCL enhancement. Ga3+ ions doped NaYF4:18%Yb,2%Er have been prepared through a facile one-pot solvothermal method. Upconversion (UC) emission intensity was significantly enhanced by introducing Ga(3+ )ions into the lattice of NaYF4:Yb,Er, especially the green UC emission. With Ga3+ concentration increasing, the size of the resulting NaYF4:Yb,Er,x%Ga particles decreases gradually. By doping 25% Ga3+, the green UC emission is increased by 30 times, while the red emission is enhanced by only 8 times. The morphology of particles and local symmetry around Er3+ ions have been changed, resulting in the selective enhancement of green UC emission. In addition, the temperature-dependent UCL properties of NaYF4:Yb,Er,25%Ga and NaYF4:Yb,Er were investigated. The maximum thermal sensitivity of NaYF4:Yb,Er,25%Ga could reach 0.0046 K-1 at 498 K. Therefore, NaYF4:Yb,Er,25%Ga with strong green UCL could be served as a potential candidate for sensitive temperature sensing.
