Abstract:The contrast sensitivity function (CSF), delineating contrast sensitivity over a wide range of spatial frequencies, provides a comprehensive characterization of spatial vision and a sensitive test for many physiological and pathological processes. A precise CSF measurement tool for the aging population is of great theoretical and practical importance. In the current study, we tested whether the assumptions of the newly developed quick CSF method were valid and whether it can rapidly, reliably, and effectively evaluate CSFs in the aging population. The quick CSF method combines Bayesian adaptive inference with an information gain strategy to directly estimate four parameters that define the observer’s CSF. Eighteen young and twenty-five old observers participated in the evaluation of the quick CSF method. All observers were screened for ophthalmological and mental diseases. Our results showed that the CSFs derived from the quick CSF method well matched with those from the traditional Ψ method, with excellent test-retest reliability. More importantly, the quick CSF method can accurately detect the difference of CSFs between the young and old groups. Aging significantly degrades contrast sensitivity. The quick CSF method demonstrates great potentials for both laboratory research and clinical applications in the aging population.

Abstract:Visual functions decline with age, but how aging degrades visual functions remains controversial. In the current study, the mechanisms underlying age-related visual declines were examined psychophysically. We developed an efficient method to quickly explore contrast sensitivity as a function of nine spatial frequencies at three levels of external noise in both young and old subjects. Fifty-two young and twenty-six old subjects have been screened for ophthalmological and mental diseases and participated in the experiment. Contrast sensitivity varied significantly with spatial frequency, age, and level of external noise. By adopting a nonlinear observer model, we decomposed contrast sensitivity into inefficiencies in internal additive noise, internal multiplicative noise, perceptual template gain, and/ or system non-linearity. Model analysis revealed that aging impacts both internal additive noise and perceptual template gain, and such age-related degradation is tuned to spatial frequency, which is also a good predictor to discriminate old from young. The quick characterization of contrast sensitivity functions at different noise levels and the accompanying analysis developed in the current study may have profound application in other clinical populations.

Abstract:Background and Objective: We sought to establish normative quantitative contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) values in healthy adult eyes and investigate the effect of age on qCSF. Patients and Methods: Healthy eyes underwent qCSF testing (adaptive sensory technology) and Snellen's visual acuity (VA). Descriptive statistics and mixed-effects multivariable linear regressions were evaluated. Results: A total of 334 eyes (290 patients) with median age 61 years (range 21 to 88) had qCSF values as follows: area under the log contrast sensitivity function curve: 1.18; contrast acuity: 1.32; contrast sensitivity (CS) at 1 cycle per degree (cpd): 1.32; CS at 1.5 cpd: 1.37; CS at 3 cpd: 1.38; CS at 6 cpd: 1.20; CS at 12 cpd: 0.69; CS at 18 cpd: 0.22. Linear reductions in qCSF values per decade of age ranged from −0.02 to −0.07 vs 0.01 for visual acuity (VA). Age had a greater effect on the majority of qCSF values than VA (beta standardized regression coefficient ranged from −0.309 to −0.141 for qCSF values vs 0.177 for VA). Conclusions: We herein establish a normative database for qCSF and quantify the effect of age on qCSF values, adding evidence towards the validation of qCSF as a clinical endpoint. The Temporal Window of Visual Processing in Aging

Abstract:PURPOSE. Aging affects a variety of visual functions. In this study, we aim to quantitatively investigate the temporal characteristics of visual processing in aging. METHODS. Twelve younger (24.1 +/- 1.6 years) and 12 older observers (58.4 +/- 3.6 years) participated in the study. All participants had normal or corrected-to-normal vision. The contrast thresholds of the participants were measured using an orientation discrimination task with white external noise masks. The target-mask stimulus onset asynchronies were 16.7 ms, 33.4 ms, 50.0 ms, 83.4 ms, and 8 (no external noise masks) in separate conditions. The signal stimulus was carefully chosen such that it was equally visible for the younger and older participants. An elaborated perceptual template model (ePTM) was fit to the data of each participant. RESULTS. Without masks, there was no difference in contrast thresholds between the younger and older groups (P = 0.707). With masks, contrast thresholds in the older group elevated more than those in the younger group, and the pattern of threshold elevation differed in the two groups. The ePTM fitted the data well, with the older observers having lower template gains than the younger observers (P = 3.58 x 10(-6)). A further analysis of the weight parameters of the temporal window revealed that the older observers had a flatter temporal window than the younger observers (P = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS. Age-related temporal processing deficits were found in older observers with normal contrast sensitivity to the signal stimuli. The deficits were accounted for by the inferior temporal processing window of the visual system in aging.
What Determines Contrast Sensitivity: an External Noise Study Across Spatial Frequencies?

Abstract:Although it has greatly improved our understanding of a variety of sensory inefficiencies, pathological degradation, and system state changes (Ahumada & Lovell, 1971; Lu & Dosher, 2008; Ahumada, 1987; Geisler, 1989; Legge, Kersten, & Burgess, 1987; Lu & Dosher, 1999, 2001; Pelli, 1981, 1990; Huang, Tao, Zhou, & Lu. 2007), application of the external noise paradigm and observer models is usually implemented in a single spatial frequency condition. It is not clear how the various efficiencies vary across spatial frequencies and how they are related to the contrast sensitivity function (CSF). In the current study, we applied the external noise method and perceptual template model to stimulus conditions over a wide range of spatial frequencies. We evaluated how the various sources of observer inefficiency change with spatial frequency and determined the limiting factors underlying the contrast sensitivity function. The method of constant stimuli was used to measure contrast psychometric functions for a 2-AFC grating detection task at five spatial frequencies (0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 8 cpd) and eight external noise levels in four subjects. Each psychometric function was sampled at five contrast levels, based on pilot tests for each subject. There were a total of 200 combinations of spatial frequency, external noise and contrast levels (5*8*5), and 18,000 trials (200 conditions*90 trails/condition). We found that only internal additive noise (by more than 1000 times) and gain of the perceptual template (less than 2 times) changed significantly with spatial frequency, while transducer non-linearity and coefficient for multiplicative noise were constant. The 12-parameter model provided a very good account of all the data in the 200 conditions (87.5%, 86.0%, 90.0% and 96.4% for the four subjects, respectively). Evaluating the Performance of the Quick CSF Method in Detecting Contrast Sensitivity Function Changes

Abstract:The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) has shown promise as a functional vision endpoint for monitoring the changes in functional vision that accompany eye disease or its treatment. However, detecting CSF changes with precision and efficiency at both the individual and group levels is very challenging. By exploiting the Bayesian foundation of the quick CSF method (Lesmes, Lu, Baek, & Albright, 2010), we developed and evaluated metrics for detecting CSF changes at both the individual and group levels. A 10-letter identification task was used to assess the systematic changes in the CSF measured in three luminance conditions in 112 naïve normal observers. The data from the large sample allowed us to estimate the test-retest reliability of the quick CSF procedure and evaluate its performance in detecting CSF changes at both the individual and group levels. The test-retest reliability reached 0.974 with 50 trials. In 50 trials, the quick CSF method can detect a medium 0.30 log unit area under log CSF change with 94.0% accuracy at the individual observer level. At the group level, a power analysis based on the empirical distribution of CSF changes from the large sample showed that a very small area under log CSF change (0.025 log unit) could be detected by the quick CSF method with 112 observers and 50 trials. These results make it plausible to apply the method to monitor the progression of visual diseases or treatment effects on individual patients and greatly reduce the time, sample size, and costs in clinical trials at the group level.
A Study of Spatial Chromatic Contrast Sensitivity Based on Different Colors, Luminance, and Stimulus Patterns

Abstract:The goals of this work are to accumulate experimental data on contrast sensitivity functions and to establish a visual model that incorporates spatial frequency dependence. In the experimental design, two patterns were compared: fixed-size and fixed-cycle stimuli from different luminance levels. The detection thresholds have been measured for chromatic contrast patterns at different spatial frequencies. The present experiment was conducted with the aim to form a most comprehensive data by combining with our data. The experimental parameters including (1) five colour centres (white, red, yellow, green and blue), which were recommended by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), at two different luminance levels for each colour centre; (2) three colour directions for each colour centre, namely luminance, red-green and yellow-blue and (3) five spatial frequencies, 0.06, 0.24, 0.96, 3.84 and 6.00 cycles per degree (cpd). The present and our earlier data were combined to form a complete set data to develop and test different models. A 10-bit display characterized by GOG model was used to obtain contrast thresholds of different color centers by the 2-alternative forced choice method and stair-case method. The experimental results revealed different parametric effects and also confirmed the McCann's finding that the number of cycles affects the comparative sensitivity. Finally, a cone contrast model and a postreceptoral contrast model proposed by Mantiuk et al was developed by fitting the visual test data (fixed number of cycles and fixed size). The models could accurately predict the contrast sensitivity of different color centers, spatial frequencies and stimulus.
The Age Effect on Observer Colour Matching and Individual Colour Matching Functions

Abstract:The visual changes caused by aging have an important effect on human vision. In this study, a series of color matching experiments were conducted to explore the differences in color matching results between observers of different age groups. The experiments were conducted using a visual trichromator, which could be illuminated by 18 LEDs with different peak wavelengths as light sources that formed 11 different triplets of RGB primaries. The matched and reference fields observed by the observers in the experiment were equally sized semicircular fields that together formed a circular field. A fixed triplet of RGB primaries produced the white reference field on the right side. It was matched on the left-side by adjusting the primary intensities of each of the 11 triplets of RGB primaries. The white reference stimulus was fixed at 120 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐/𝑚𝑚2 luminance level. One hundred Chinese observers with normal colour vision were divided by decades into 7 groups from 10 to 80 years old. The matches were analysed to estimate their cone spectral sensitivities and photopigment, macular and lens optical densities. The experimental results show relatively little variability with age, except as expected increases in lens density with age, and older observers showed more inter-observer variability. The analysis suggests that some of the mean colour matching parameters assumed by the CIE, such as the macular pigment optical density, do not apply for these observers.

Abstract:Objective:To study analyze sthe contrast sensitivity of high myopia.Methods:The contrast sensitivity function(CSF) in 60 eyes of 30 patients with high myopia was studied with normal subjects as control.Those with other ocular disease or systemic disease were excluded to avoid any possible affection.The patients were aged from 12 to 62 years.Corrected vision were all over 0.8 in high myopia,and the control was more than 1.0.The contrast sensitivity function was measured with CSV-1000E Vision Testing Instrument(provided by VECTOR VISION company).Results:The results revealed that the CSF of high myopia in each space-frequency range was decreased.The difference between high myopia group and control group was significant(P0.05).Conclusion:The CSF can be used as a criterion for the evaluation of high myopia.
Measuring the effects of age on contrast suppression

Abstract:The apparent contrast of a suprathreshold central stimulus can be reduced by a surrounding stimulus - a phenomenon known as surround suppression. When stimuli are presented at the fovea, this effect reportedly increases in strength with age. The underlying mechanism proposed for this age dependence, a change in the balance of inhibition and excitation in cortex, makes this phenomenon potentially interesting as a biomarker of neurological dysfunction. Here, we attempt to repeat these measurements, but we use stimuli designed to control for untuned overlay masking, a different form of suppression thought to be of pre-cortical origin. We measured contrast matching thresholds in twenty younger (< 30) and seventeen older (>60) observers. Across all observers, we find weak suppression that has little or no orientation tuning and, importantly, no dependence on age. Our findings contradict those from earlier studies and suggest that effects relating to age may be dependent on the temporal parameters of this stimulus, and could arise from effects on other pre-cortical mechanisms.

Characteristics and Related Parameters of Quick Contrast Sensitivity Function in Chinese Ametropia Children.

Abstract:Purpose:To investigate the characteristics of quick contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) and its related parameters in Chinese ametropia children.Methods:This case series study enrolled 106 eyes of 53 children (male/female=29/24, age: 9.04 +/- 2.06 years). Examinations included manifest refraction, axial length, corneal curvature, and monocular and binocular qCSF readings without refractive correction (area under log CSF [AULCSF], CSF acuity, and contrast sensitivity [CS] at 1.0 to 18.0 cpd). The subjects were divided into groups according to age and refractive parameters for analysis.Results:The mean spherical equivalent (SE), AULCSF, and CSF acuity of the test eyes were -0.94 +/- 1.53 D, 0.44 +/- 0.33, and 8.50 +/- 5.97 cpd, respectively. In the monocular qCSF comparison, the refraction sphere (RS) was the major factor correlated with qCSF readings (B=0.186, P=0.009 for AULCSF; B=0.543, P=0.019 for CSF acuity; generalized linear model). The three groups stratified by RS/SE (<-1.00D, -1.00D to 0D, and >0D) showed significant differences in CS at medium spatial frequencies (3.0 and 6.0 cpd; all P<0.05). In the low RS/SE group (within -1 to 0 D), the CS at 12.0 cpd was significantly lower than that in the hyperopia group (all P<0.05). Binocular qCSF readings were significantly correlated with those of the eyes with lower RS (all P<0.05).Conclusion:RS and SE are the major contributing factors of qCSF without refractive correction in children. The CS at medium spatial frequencies decrease significantly as the RS/SE increase. In low myopia children, the CS at medium and high spatial frequencies are significantly decreased, providing practical value in visual function screening in children.
Effect of Observer Age and Stimulus Size on the Performance of CIE Color Matching Functions

Abstract:Both observer age and size of stimulus as characterized using the field of view (FOV) are two important parameters to affect the color matching functions (CMFs) of human observers. They are also included in the cone fundamental and CMFs models that were recently proposed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) in 2006. In contrast to the great number of studies investigating the performance of CMFs in characterizing color matches and mismatches using different primary sets, few study investigated the effect of CMFs in characterizing these two factors. In this study, we carefully designed a series of test stimuli in five colors, which had different magnitudes of calculated color difference to the corresponding reference stimulus using the CIE 2006 CMFs model. The stimuli were presented in two FOVs (i.e., 8.6° and 2.9°). A group of young and senior observers were asked to judge which of the two test stimuli appeared to be similar to the reference stimulus, which was a forced choice. The color differences calculated using the CIE 1931 2° and 1964 10° CMFs were found to have higher correlations to the visual color differences judged by the senior and young observers respectively, regardless of the actual FOVs used in the experiment. In addition, though the CIE 2006 CMFs with the different parameter settings always had better performance in predicting the perceived color differences, they failed to characterize the effect of observer age and stimulus size. Also, the experiment results did not support the CIE's recommendation of using the 10° CMFs for stimuli with an FOV greater than 4° and the 2° CMFs for those smaller than 4°.

Abstract:Sensitivity to luminance difference, or contrast sensitivity, is critical for animals to survive in and interact with the external world. The contrast sensitivity function (CSF), which measures visual sensitivity to spatial patterns over a wide range of spatial frequencies, provides a comprehensive characterization of the visual system. Despite its popularity and significance in both basic research and clinical practice, it hasn't been clear what determines the CSF and how the factors underlying the CSF change in different conditions. In the current study, we applied the external noise method and perceptual template model to a wide range of external noise and spatial frequency (SF) conditions, and evaluated how the various sources of observer inefficiency changed with SF and determined the limiting factors underlying the CSF. We found that only internal additive noise and template gain changed significantly with SF, while the transducer non-linearity and coefficient for multiplicative noise were constant. The 12-parameter model provided a very good account of all the data in the 200 tested conditions (86.5%, 86.2%, 89.5%, and 96.4% for the four subjects, respectively). Our results suggest a re-consideration of the popular spatial vision model that employs the CSF as the front-end filter and constant internal additive noise across spatial frequencies.
