Abstract:Topological semimetals have attracted significant attentions owing to their potential applications in numerous fields such as low-power electron devices and quantum computation, which are closely related to their thermal transport properties. In this work, the phonon transport properties of topological Dirac nodal-line semimetals ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te) with the PbClF-type structures are systematically studied using the first-principles calculations combined with the Boltzmann transport theory. The obtained lattice thermal conductivities show an obvious anisotropy, which is caused by the layer structures of ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te). The room-temperature lattice conductivity of ZrGeTe along c direction is found to be as low as 0.24 W m(-1) K-1, indicating that it could be of great significance in the fields of thermal coating materials and solar cell absorber. In addition, we extract each phonon branch from group velocities, phonon scattering rates, Gruneisen parameters, and phase space volumes to investigate the mechanism underlying the low thermal conductivity. It is concluded that the difference of thermal conductivities of three materials may be caused by the number of scattering channels and the effect of anharmonic. Furthermore, the phonon mean free path along a direction is relatively longer. Nanostructures or polycrystalline structures may be effective to reduce the thermal conductivity and improve the thermoelectric properties.
Modulating Thermal Conduction by the Axial Strain

Abstract:Recent studies have revealed that the symmetry of interparticle potential plays an important role in the one-dimensional thermal conduction problem. Here we demonstrate that, by introducing strain into the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-beta lattice, the interparticle potential can be converted from symmetric to asymmetric, which leads to a change of the asymptotic decaying behavior of the heat current autocorrelation function. More specifically, such a change in the symmetry of the potential induces a fast decaying stage, in which the heat current autocorrelation function decays faster than power-law manners or in a power-law manner but faster than similar to t(-1), in the transient stage. The duration of the fast decaying stage increases with increasing strain ratio and decreasing of the temperature. As a result, the thermal conductivity calculated following the Green-Kubo formula may show a truncation-time independent behavior, suggesting a system-size independent thermal conductivity.
Anharmonicity Induced Thermal Modulation in Stressed Graphene

Abstract:Thermal properties are essentially decided by atomic geometry and thus stress is the most direct way for manipulating. In this paper, we investigate stress modulation of thermal conductivity of graphene by molecular dynamics simulations and discuss the underlying microscopic mechanism. It is found that thermal conductivity of flexural-free graphene increases with compression and decreases with strain, while thermal conductivity of flexural-included graphene decreases with both compression and strain. Such difference in thermal behavior originates from the changes in the anharmonicity of the interatomic potential, where the wrinkle scattering is responsible for the thermal conductivity diminishment in flexural-included graphene under strain. By comparing the results obtained from the Tersoff and AIREBO potentials, it is revealed that the degree of the symmetry of interatomic potential determines the thermal conductivity variation of graphene. Our results indicate that the symmetry of interatomic potential should be taken into careful consideration in constructing the lattice model of graphene.

Abstract:Metal -organic frameworks (MOFs) have often been used for gas storage owing to their high surface areas and nanoscale pores, where they are packed in the tank. The concomitant exothermicity and endothermicity during the gas storage process strongly affect their storage capacity. Understanding the thermal transport in MOFs under mechanical strain is critical to maximizing the gas uptake capacity of MOFs. Here, we systematically investigate the thermal transport in a typical MOF (i.e., HKUST-1 or equivalently MOF-199) considering the external mechanical strain using molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the thermal conductivity of HKUST-1 decreases with compressive strain and increases with tensile strain, which is contradictory to the classical Liebfried and Schlomann theory, i.e., the thermal conductivity of crystals should increase with applied compression. Our spectral analysis further shows that the abnormal strain -dependent thermal conductivity can be well explained by the phonon -gas theory. We find that the relaxation time of vibrations in HKUST-1 decreases when compressive strain is applied. This is because the anharmonicity of compressed HKUST-1 increases compared with that of pristine HKUST-1. The anharmonicity of HKUST-1 decreases when tensile strain is applied, and thus, the corresponding vibrational relaxation time increases. Meanwhile, the vibrational group velocity decreases or increases for compressed or tensile HKUST-1, respectively. This is due to the compressionor stretch -induced shift of vibrational branches caused by the structural softening and hardening. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of HKUST-1 decreases with compressive strain even though the volumetric heat capacity of compressed HKUST-1 increases. The thermal conductivity of HKUST-1 increases with tensile strain, though the corresponding volumetric heat capacity decreases. Here, we provide a fundamental understanding of the thermal transport mechanisms in MOFs considering mechanical strain, which offers guidance for the thermal management design in these corresponding gas storage applications.
Abnormal In-Plane Thermal Conductivity Anisotropy in Bilayer Α-Phase Tellurene

Abstract:In layered materials, it is well known that the cross-plane or cross-chain (CC) thermal conductivity is lower than that of the in-plane or along-chain direction due to weaker bonding in the cross-plane or CC directions. In this work, surprisingly, we predict using first-principles that the CC thermal conductivity κ⊥ is higher than the along-chain thermal conductivity κ∥ with a κ⊥/κ∥ ratio of 1.174 in bilayer α-phase tellurene (2L-αTe), an emerging 2D material that has recently drawn extensive interest due to its intriguing electronic, thermoelectronic, and piezoelectronic properties. Also, the room-temperature κ⊥ and κ∥ of 2L-αTe are 5.69 W/mK and 4.85 W/mK, which are 251% and 31% enhanced from that of bulk Te, respectively. A detailed analysis of lattice structure, phonon spectra, and electron properties of 2L-αTe and bulk Te is provided. We find that the larger lattice shrink in CC direction and the change in band angle lead to stiffened phonons and weaker anharmonicity, which in turn yield higher phonon group velocity and longer phonon lifetime in CC direction for 2L-αTe, resulting in the enhanced thermal conductivity and the anomolus thermal anisotropy. Crystal orbital Hamiltan population (COHP) and electron localization function (ELF) analysis demonstrate the enhancement of the strength of “covalent-like quasi-bonding” (CLQB) in CC direction of 2L-αTe, which is accompanied by the lattice shrink in CC direction and the change of band angle. Our study identifies a case of unexpected anisotropic thermal transport in 2D materials, and sheds light on the improvement of thermal conductivity isotropy in 2D materials for the thermal management of electronic devices.

Abstract:PbTe, one of the most promising thermoelectric materials, has recently demonstrated a thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of above 2.0 when alloyed with group II elements. The improvements are due mainly to significant reduction of lattice thermal conductivity (κl), which was in turn attributed to nanoparticle precipitates. However, a fundamental understanding of various phonon scattering mechanisms within the bulk alloy is still lacking. In this work, we apply the newly-developed density-functional-theory-based compressive sensing lattice dynamics approach to model lattice heat transport in PbTe, MTe, and Pb0.94M0.06Te (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) and compare our results with experimental measurements, with focus on the strain effect and mass disorder scattering. We find that (1) CaTe, SrTe, and BaTe in the rock-salt structure exhibit much higher κl than PbTe, while MgTe in the same structure shows anomalously low κl; (2) lattice heat transport of PbTe is extremely sensitive to static strain induced by alloying atoms in solid solution form; (3) mass disorder scattering plays a major role in reducing κl for Mg/Ca/Sr-alloyed PbTe through strongly suppressing the lifetimes of intermediate- and high-frequency phonons, while for Ba-alloyed PbTe, precipitated nanoparticles are also important.

Abstract: Strain engineering is one of the most promising and effective routes toward continuously tuning the electronic and optic properties of materials, while thermal properties are generally believed to be insensitive to mechanical strain. In this paper, the strain-dependent thermal conductivity of monolayer silicene under uniform bi-axial tension is computed by solving the phonon Boltzmann transport equation with force constants extracted from first-principles calculations. Unlike the commonly believed understanding that thermal conductivity only slightly decreases with increased tensile strain for bulk materials, it is found that the thermal conductivity of silicene first increases dramatically with strain and then slightly decreases when the applied strain increases further. At a tensile strain of 4%, the highest thermal conductivity is found to be about 7.5 times that of unstrained one. Such an unusual strain dependence is mainly attributed to the dramatic enhancement in the acoustic phonon lifetime. Such enhancement plausibly originates from the flattening of the buckling of the silicene structure upon stretching, which is unique for silicene as compared with other common two-dimensional materials. Our findings offer perspectives of modulating the thermal properties of low-dimensional structures for applications such as thermoelectrics, thermal circuits, and nanoelectronics.

Abstract:It is well known that the lattice thermal conductivity of the vast majority of bulk materials increases under compressive strain and decreases under tensile strain. In this paper, taking the typical negative thermal expansion material ScF3 as an example, we systematically investigate the effect of strain on the phonon transport properties by means of first-principles calculation combined with the Boltzmann transport equation. The results show that the thermal conductivity of ScF3 exhibits an anomalous strain dependence, where the thermal conductivity decreases under compressive strain while increasing as the tensile strain is smaller than −4.2 GPa. When the tensile strain increases further (larger than −4.2 GPa), however, the thermal conductivity of ScF3 decreases with tensile strain, presenting a non-monotonic behavior. Through analyzing the phonon mode information, we demonstrate that such anomalous and non-monotonic strain dependent thermal transport in ScF3 mainly originated from the intrinsic character of the negative Grüneisen parameter (negative thermal expansion). Moreover, the root mean square displacement is also utilized to further demonstrate the variation of phonon anharmonicity and thermal conductivity of ScF3 with strain. The findings shed light on the underlying association between thermal expansion and thermal conductivity and provide a feasible strategy for searching for materials with anomalous strain dependent thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Engineering nanostructured superlattices provides an effective solution toward the realization of high-performance thermoelectric device and thermal management materials, where the anisotropic thermal conductivity is critical for designing orientation-dependent thermal devices. Herein, the lattice thermal conductivity anisotropy of Al/Ag superlattices as one typical example of superlattice materials is investigated utilizing non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The cross-plane and in-plane lattice thermal conductivities of one-dimensional superlattices are in the ranges of 0.5–3.2 W/(m·K) and 1.8–5.1 W/(m·K) at different period lengths, respectively, both of which are smaller than those of bulk materials. More specifically, the cross-plane lattice thermal conductivity of superlattices increases with the period length, while the in-plane phonon thermal conductivity first increases and then trends to convergence, resulting in the non-monotonic thermal anisotropy value. To further reveal the microscopic phonon transport mechanism, the interfacial phonon thermal resistance, density of states and spectral phonon transmission coefficient including anharmonic phonon properties under different period lengths are calculated. Our results can be helpful for understanding phonon transport in low-dimensional materials and provide guidance for optimizing the thermal conductivity anisotropy of superlattice materials in the application ranging from thermoelectric devices to thermal management in micro/nano systems.
Thermal conductivity in one-dimensional nonlinear disordered lattices: two kinds of scattering effects of hard-type and soft-type anharmonicities

Abstract:Amorphous solids can be theoretically modeled by anharmonic disordered lattices, but most of the theoretical studies on thermal conductivity in such lattices only consider hard-type (HT) anharmonicity. In this study, we investigate the thermal conductivity κ of one-dimensional disordered lattices with both HT and soft-type (ST) anharmonic on-site potentials. Our results from molecular dynamics simulations and the quasi-harmonic Green–Kubo (QHGK) method show that while the HT model exhibits non-monotonic dependence of κ on anharmonicity, the ST model shows a monotonically increasing trend. This trend provides a novel approach to enhancing thermal conductivity in disordered systems. Additionally, the QHGK predictions for κ in the HT model are consistent with simulation results over a wide range of anharmonicity values; however, for the ST model, deviations appear as the anharmonicity becomes softer. This peculiar feature may be attributed to delocalization effects being dominant in contrast to the competing roles played by both delocalization and localization effects observed in the HT model.

Abstract:Strain engineering has been used as a versatile tool for regulating the thermal transport in various materials as a result of the phonon frequency shift. On the other hand, the phononic bandgap can be simultaneously tuned by the strain, which can play a critical role in wide phononic bandgap materials due to the high-order phonon anharmonicity. In this work, we investigate the complex role of uniaxial tensile strain on the lattice thermal conductivity of hydrogenated graphene-like borophene, by using molecular dynamics simulations with a machine learning potential. Our findings highlight a novel and intriguing phenomenon that the thermal conductivity in the armchair direction is non-monotonically dependent on the uniaxial armchair strain. Specifically, we uncover that the increase of phonon group velocity and the decrease of three-phonon scattering compete with the enhancement of four-phonon scattering under armchair strain, leading to the non-monotonic dependence. The enhanced four-phonon scattering originates from the unique bridged B-H bond that can sensitively control the phononic bandgap under armchair strain. This anomalous non-monotonic strain-dependence highlights the complex interplay between different mechanisms governing thermal transport in 2D materials with large phononic bandgaps. Our study offers valuable insights for designing innovative thermal management strategies based on strain.

Tensile Strain Induced Anomalous Enhancement in the Lattice Thermal Transport of Monolayer ZnO: A First Principles Study

Abstract:Density functional theory based calculations have been performed for solving the phonon Boltzmann transport equation to investigate the thermal transport properties of monolayer (ML) ZnO under in-plane isotropic biaxial tensile strain. The in-plane lattice thermal conductivity ($\kappa_{\text{L}}$) of ML-ZnO increases dramatically in response to the biaxial tensile strain ranging from 0% to 10%, conflicting with the general belief. The strain-induced stiffening of the ZA phonon mode and the resulting concomitant increase in group velocity and decrease in phonon population is found to play a significant role behind the unusual enhancement of $\kappa_{\text{L}}$. The mode resolved analysis shows the tensile strain driven competitive behavior between different phonon properties, mainly the group velocity and phonon lifetimes, being responsible for the observed unusual enhancement in $\kappa_{\text{L}}$. Additionally, the phonon scattering calculations show the importance of inclusion of 4-phonon scattering in the thermal transport calculations suggesting the significance of higher-order anharmonicity in ML-ZnO. A strikingly high 4-phonon scattering strength in ML-ZnO primarily results from the strong anharmonicity, quadratic ZA mode dispersion, large frequency gap in phonon dispersion, and reflection symmetry induced selection rule. The incorporation of 4-phonon scattering significantly alters the transport characteristics of all the phonon modes, in general and ZA phonons, in particular. At large strains, a linear dispersion of the ZA mode and closure of the frequency gap is observed, which results in a significant reduction of 4-phonon scattering strength in ML-ZnO.

Abstract:The influence of micro/nanostructure on thermal conductivity is a topic of great scientific interest, particularly to thermoelectrics. The current understanding is that structural defects decrease thermal conductivity through phonon scattering where the phonon dispersion and speed of sound are assumed to remain constant. Experimental work on a PbTe model system is presented, which shows that the speed of sound linearly decreases with increased internal strain. This softening of the materials lattice completely accounts for the reduction in lattice thermal conductivity, without the introduction of additional phonon scattering mechanisms. Additionally, it is shown that a major contribution to the improvement in the thermoelectric figure of merit (zT > 2) of high-efficiency Na-doped PbTe can be attributed to lattice softening. While inhomogeneous internal strain fields are known to introduce phonon scattering centers, this study demonstrates that internal strain can modify phonon propagation speed as well. This presents new avenues to control lattice thermal conductivity, beyond phonon scattering. In practice, many engineering materials will exhibit both softening and scattering effects, as is shown in silicon. This work shines new light on studies of thermal conductivity in fields of energy materials, microelectronics, and nanoscale heat transfer.

Abstract:It remains a daunting task to quantify the configurational entropy of a material from atom‐revolved electron microscopy images and correlate the results with the material's lattice thermal conductivity, which strides across statics, dynamics, and thermal transport of crystal lattice over orders of magnitudes in length and time. Here, a proof‐of‐principle study of atomic‐scale visualization and quantification of configurational entropy in relation to thermal conductivity in single crystalline trigonal GeSb2Te4 (aka t‐GeSb2Te4) with native atomic site disorder is reported. A concerted effort of large t‐GeSb2Te4 single crystal growth, in‐lab developed analysis procedure of atomic column intensity, the visualization and quantification of configurational entropy including corresponding modulation, and thermal transport measurements enable an entropic "bottom‐up" perspective to the lattice thermal conductivity of t‐GeSb2Te4. It is uncovered that the configurational entropy increases phonon scattering and reduces phonon mean free path as well as promotes anharmonicity, thereby giving rise to low lattice thermal conductivity and promising thermoelectric performance. The current study sheds lights on an atomic scale bottom‐up configurational entropy design in diverse regimes of structural and functional materials research and applications.

Abstract:Using molecular dynamic calculations, we studied the strain effects on the thermal conductivity and local heat flux distribution in thermoelectric Bi2Te3 nanofilm. It is found that the thermal conductivity of Bi2Te3 nanofilm can be effectively tuned by strain. Remarkably, a 6% tensile strain is able to reduce the thermal conductivity by 50% while a 4% compressive strain is able to increase the thermal conductivity by 60%. Interestingly, the local heat flux in individual atomic layer responds quite differently to tensile and compressive strain: Tensile strain leads to a more uniform heat flux distribution while compressive strain leads to an opposite trend. Through analyzing the phonon vibrational spectrum, we reveal the underlying physical insights into the relationship among strain, thermal conductivity and heat flux distribution. The present work provides a possible route to effectively tune the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric Bi2Te3 nanofilm through strain engineering.

Abstract:The size, temperature and strain effect on thermal conduction of amorphous/crystalline silicon superlattices were discussed by using atomic simulation. The addition of amorphous phase layer would greatly reduce the thermal conductivity of superlattices. When the temperature increases, the thermal conductivity will increase and the Kapitza resistance will decrease. As the strain change from compression to tension, the Kapitza resistance increases and the thermal conductivity decreases at both compression and tension. The overlap factors of vibration spectra at the interface are used to explain the effect of strain on the interfacial heat transfer. Our work exhibits the potential for modulating the thermal properties of the amorphous/crystalline silicon superlattices by introducing external factors like strain and temperature.

Abstract:Here, a new route is proposed for the minimization of lattice thermal conductivity in MnTe through considerable increasing phonon scattering by introducing dense lattice distortions. Dense lattice distortions can be induced by Cu and Ag dopants possessing large differences in atom radius with host elements, which causes strong phonon scattering and results in extremely low lattice thermal conductivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Cu and Ag codoping enables multiple valence band convergence and produces a high density of state values in the electronic structure of MnTe, contributing to the large Seebeck coefficient. Cu and Ag codoping not only optimizes the Seebeck coefficient but also substantially increases the carrier concentration and electrical conductivity, resulting in the significant enhancement of power factor. The maximum power factor reaches 11.36 µW cm-1 K-2 in Mn0.98 Cu0.04 Ag0.04 Te. Consequently, an outstanding ZT of 1.3 is achieved for Mn0.98 Cu0.04 Ag0.04 Te by these synergistic effects. This study provides guidelines for developing high-performance thermoelectric materials through the rational design of effective dopants.

Abstract:The origin of the anomalous anharmonic lattice dynamics of lead telluride is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations with interatomic force constants (IFCs) up to quartic terms obtained from first principles. The calculations reproduce the peak asymmetry of the radial distribution functions and the double peaks of transverse optical phonon previously observed with neutron diffraction and scattering experiments. They are identified to be due to the extremely large nearest-neighbor cubic IFCs in the [100] direction. The outstanding strength of the nearest-neighbor cubic IFCs relative to the longer-range ones explains the reason why the distortion in the radial distribution function is local.
Lattice Strain Enhances Thermoelectric Properties in Sb2Te3/Te Heterostructure

Abstract:An efficient way to improve thermoelectric (TE) performance of a system by adjusting the lattice strain (e.g., dislocation and nano-interface) without changing its composition is reported in this study. By controlling the crystallization and growth of Te nanoparticles, a Sb2Te3/Te heterostructure with enhanced TE properties is obtained. The growth of Te nanoparticles as well as the introduced lattice strain is characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in details. In addition to the low thermal conductivity (kappa ) caused by lattice strain, the resulting stress on the heterostructure may lead to a state near electronic topological transition that enhances the power factor (PF ). As a result, the optimized figure-of-merit of the Sb2Te3/Te heterojunction reaches up to 0.61 at 300 K with PF and kappa of 11.2 mu W cm(-1) K-2 and 0.55 W m(-1) K-1, respectively. This method can also be applied in other heterojunction systems to improve TE properties.
