Abstract:The distribution of slip during an earthquake and how it propagates among faults in the subduction system play a major role in seismic and tsunami hazards, yet they are poorly understood because offshore observations are often lacking. Here we derive the slip distribution and rupture evolution during the 2016 Mw 7.9 Kaikōura (New Zealand) earthquake that reconcile the surface rupture, space geodetic measurements, seismological and tsunami waveform records. We use twelve fault segments, with eleven in the crust and one on the megathrust interface, to model the geodetic data and match the major features of the complex surface ruptures. Our modeling result indicates that a large portion of the moment is distributed on the subduction interface, making a significant contribution to the far field surface deformation and teleseismic body waves. The inclusion of local strong motion and teleseismic waveform data in the joint inversion reveals a unilateral rupture towards northeast with a relatively low averaged rupture speed of ∼1.5 km/s. The first 30 s of the rupture took place on the crustal faults with oblique slip motion and jumped between fault segments that have large differences in strike and dip. The peak moment release occurred at ∼65 s, corresponding to simultaneous rupture of both plate interface and the overlying splay faults with rake angle changes progressively from thrust to strike-slip. The slip on the Papatea fault produced more than 2 m of offshore uplift, making a major contribution to the tsunami at the Kaikōura station, while the northeastern end of the rupture can explain the main features at the Wellington station. Our inversions and simulations illuminate complex up-dip rupture behavior that should be taken into consideration in both seismic and tsunami hazard assessment. The extreme complex rupture behavior also brings new challenges to the earthquake dynamic simulations and understanding the physics of earthquakes.

Abstract:The propagation of the 2021 M(w)7.4 Maduo earthquake rupture from the central Jiangcuo fault (JCF) onto its eastern terminus, in the northern Tibetan Plateau, exhibits a complex surface geometry with conjugate faults, bends, and stepovers. About 50 km east of the 2021 earthquake epicenter, which is located at Maduo County within the Tibetan plateau, the surface rupture along the Jiangcuo eastern fault (JCEF), deviating <20 degrees anticlockwise from the general strike, provides a valuable chance for understanding rupture processes through a geometrically complex fault network where >= 4 interactional faults come together. Using orthophotos derived from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey with a ground resolution of 6 cm, complemented by field investigations, we mapped the surface rupture in detail and measured the coseismic slip distribution of the JCEF. Our mapping illuminates sporadic breaks of tectonic origin in the sand dune area immediately near the branching point and a more simple, linear rupture trace eastward of the junction. The high-resolution slip measurements along the JCEF follow approximately a dogtail shape to the eastern termination with a maximum left-lateral coseismic slip of 2.9 m at a fault bend. We found linear surface ruptures along the NW-strike geologic faults, indicating triggered coseismic slip on conjugate faults. The intersections with conjugate faults overlap with discontinuities in rupture geometry and interference of surface slip on the main fault. We propose that triggered slip on pre-mapped Quaternary faults impacted the rupture propagation onto the JCEF. The complexity in rupture geometry suggests fault interaction in the eastern tip zone of the Maduo rupture.

Abstract:On 14 November 2016, northeastern South Island of New Zealand was struck by a major moment magnitude (Mw) 7.8 earthquake. Field observations, in conjunction with interferometric synthetic aperture radar, Global Positioning System, and seismology data, reveal this to be one of the most complex earthquakes ever recorded. The rupture propagated northward for more than 170 kilometers along both mapped and unmapped faults before continuing offshore at the island's northeastern extent. Geodetic and field observations reveal surface ruptures along at least 12 major faults, including possible slip along the southern Hikurangi subduction interface; extensive uplift along much of the coastline; and widespread anelastic deformation, including the ~8-meter uplift of a fault-bounded block. This complex earthquake defies many conventional assumptions about the degree to which earthquake ruptures are controlled by fault segmentation and should motivate reevaluation of these issues in seismic hazard models.
Multi-fault rupture and successive triggering during the 2012 Mw 8.6 Sumatra offshore earthquake

Abstract:On April 11, 2012 a Mw 8.6 strike-slip earthquake struck the northern Sumatra offshore region, and became the largest intraplate event ever recorded there. Preliminary study results show a remarkably complex rupture pattern, on a fault system manifested by north-south trending paleo-transform faults and east-west striking abyssal hill fabric. To image the rupture pattern of the earthquake, we back-projected teleseismic P wave recordings observed at three regional seismic networks (EU, AU, and F-net). Our results indicate that the earthquake ruptured on a conjugate fault system, composed of two subparallel WNW-ESE trending faults, and a NNE-SSW striking fault in between, for a duration of at least 120 s. The rupture started at the WNW end of the first WNW-ESE trending fault located at the east of the conjugate fault system, and propagated toward ESE. It then jumped to the second NNE-SSW trending fault located west of the first fault, and first extended SSWward and 15 s later NNEward. After its end on the second fault, the rupture jumped onto the third WNW-ESE trending fault and continued WNWward. The static Coulomb stress changes calculated from the rupture of the first and then the second faults, based on simplified uniform slip models, suggest that initiation of the rupture on the second fault could be statically and dynamically triggered by the first fault. Rupture segmentation on the East Anatolian fault (Turkey) controlled by along-strike variations in long-term slip rates in a structurally complex fault system

Abstract:The East Anatolian fault in Turkey exhibits along-strike rupture segmentation, typically resulting in earthquakes with moment magnitude (Mw) up to 7.5 that are confined to individual segments. However, on 6 February 2023, a catastrophic Mw 7.8 earthquake struck near Kahramanmaraş (southeastern Turkey), defying previous expectations by rupturing multiple segments spanning over 300 km and overcoming multiple geometric complexities. We explore the mechanics of successive single- and multi-segment ruptures using numerical models of the seismic cycle calibrated to historical earthquake records and geodetic observations of the 2023 doublet. Our model successfully reproduces the observed historical rupture segmentation and the rare occurrence of multi-segment earthquakes. The segmentation pattern is influenced by variations in long-term slip rate along strike across the kinematically complex fault network between the Arabian and Anatolian plates. Our physics-based seismic cycle simulations shed light on the long-term variability of earthquake size that shapes seismic hazards.

Abstract:The speed at which an earthquake rupture propagates affects its energy balance and ground shaking impact. Dynamic models of supershear earthquakes, which are faster than the speed of shear waves, often start at subshear speed and later run faster than Eshelby’s speed. Here we present robust evidence of an early and persistent supershear rupture at the sub-Eshelby speed of the 2018 magnitude 7.5 Palu, Indonesia, earthquake. Slowness-enhanced back-projection of teleseismic data provides a sharp image of the rupture process, along a path consistent with the surface rupture trace inferred by subpixel correlation of synthetic-aperture radar and satellite optical images. The rupture propagated at a sustained velocity of 4.1 km s–1 from its initiation to its end, despite large fault bends. The persistent supershear speed is further validated by seismological evidence of far-field Rayleigh Mach waves. The unusual features of this earthquake probe the connections between the rupture dynamics and fault structure. An early supershear transition could be promoted by fault roughness near the hypocentre. Steady rupture propagation at a speed unexpected in homogeneous media could result from the presence of a low-velocity damaged fault zone.

Abstract:Previous geodetic and teleseismic observations of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake imply surprising but difficult‐to‐constrain complexity, including rupture across multiple fault segments and supershear rupture. Here, we present an integrated analysis of multi‐fault 3D dynamic rupture models, high‐resolution optical correlation analysis, and joint optical‐InSAR slip inversion. Our preferred model, validated by the teleseismic multi‐peak moment rate release, includes unilateral eastward double‐onset supershear speeds and cascading rupture dynamically triggering two adjacent fault branches. We propose that pronounced along‐strike variation in fracture energy, complex fault geometries, and multi‐scale variable prestress drives this event's complex rupture dynamics. We illustrate how supershear transition has signatures in modeled and observed off‐fault deformation. Our study opens new avenues to combine observations and models to better understand complex earthquake dynamics, including local and potentially repeating supershear episodes across immature faults or under heterogeneous stress and strength conditions, which are potentially not unusual.

Abstract:The disastrous 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in China took the local population as well as scientists by surprise. Although the Longmen Shan fault zone—which includes the fault segments along which this earthquake nucleated—was well known, geologic and geodetic data indicate relatively low (<3 mm yr −1 ) deformation rates. Here we invert Global Positioning System and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data to infer fault geometry and slip distribution associated with the earthquake. Our analysis shows that the geometry of the fault changes along its length: in the southwest, the fault plane dips moderately to the northwest but becomes nearly vertical in the northeast. Associated with this is a change in the motion along the fault from predominantly thrusting to strike-slip. Peak slip along the fault occurs at the intersections of fault segments located near the towns of Yingxiu, Beichuan and Nanba, where fatalities and damage were concentrated. We suggest that these locations represent barriers that failed in a single event, enabling the rupture to cascade through several fault segments and cause a major moment magnitude ( M w ) 7.9 earthquake. Using coseismic slip distribution and geodetic and geological slip rates, we estimate that the failure of barriers and rupture along multiple segments takes place approximately once in 4,000 years.

Abstract:Three strong earthquakes with magnitudes of M W 8.4, M W 7.9 and M W 7.0 occurred in the sea west of Sumatra Island on September 12 and 13, 2007. We relocated the epicenters and focal depths of the three events by means of the reversal-time imaging technique using broadband digital seismic data from worldwide stations ranging from 30° to 90°, imaged the spatiotemporal variation of the energy radiation sources by means of the nonplane wave array technique using the broadband digital seismic data from a generalized array made up of 33 stations of the Capital Region Digital Seismograph Network (CRDSN), and obtained the rupture duration times, extents and rupture velocities. Also, we discussed the correlations between the locations of the energy radiation sources of the three events.

Rupture of the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake Inferred from Direct P-wave Imaging

Abstract:The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake on December 26, 2004 is the first well recorded gigantic earthquake (moment magnitude Mw 9.3) by modern broadband seismic and Global Positioning System networks. The rich seismic and geodetic recordings have documented unprecedented details about the earthquake rupture, coseismic and postseismic deformations. This is a report of detailed images of the rupture process using the first-arriving compressional waves recorded by the China National Digital Seismic Network (CNDSN). An improved imaging condition was employed to account for the sparse distribution of the CNDSN stations. The resulting images are consistent with the major rupture features reported by previous seismic and geodetic studies. It is found that the earthquake rupture initiated at offshore of northwestern Sumatra and propagated in the north northwest direction at a speed of 2.7 ± 0.2 km/s. The rupture continued for at least 420 s and extended about 1200–1300 km along the Andaman trough with two bursts of seismic energy.
Rupture Process and Aftershock Focal Mechanisms of the 2022 M6.8 Luding Earthquake in Sichuan

Abstract:According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a strong earthquake of M6.8 occurred in Luding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China (102.08°E, 29.59°N), on September 5, 2022, with a focal depth of 16 km. Rapid determination of the source parameters of the earthquake sequence is vital for post-earthquake rescue, disaster assessment, and scientific research. Near-field seismic observations play a key role in the fast and reliable determination of earthquake source parameters. The numerous broadband seismic stations and strong-motion stations recently deployed by the National Earthquake Intensity Rapid Report and Early Warning project have provided valuable real-time near-field observation data. Using these near-field observations and conventional mid- and far-field seismic waveform records, we obtained the focal mechanism solutions of the mainshock and M ≥ 3.0 aftershocks through the waveform fitting method. We were further able to rapidly invert the rupture process of the mainshock. Based on the evaluation of the focal mechanism solution of the mainshock and the regional tectonic setting, we speculate that the Xianshuihe fault formed the seismogenic structure of the M6.8 strong earthquake. The aftershocks formed three spatially separated clusters with distinctly different focal mechanisms, reflecting the segmented nature of the Xianshuihe fault. As more high-frequency information has been applied in this study, the absolute location of the fault rupture is better constrained by the near-field strong-motion data. The rupture process of the mainshock correlates well with the spatial distribution of aftershocks, i.e., aftershock activities were relatively weak in the maximum slip area, and strong aftershock activities were distributed in the peripheral regions.

Abstract:The Flores Thrust is a southward-dipping, low-to-moderate angle submarine active fault in the eastern Sunda-Banda back-arc (Indonesia). Significant shallow-depth destructive earthquakes have been reported along this fault zone. From 2002 to 2009, one of its fault segments, called the Sumbawa segment, experienced five earthquakes with moment magnitude (MW) values of 6.2–6.6. In this study, we performed finite-fault rupture inversions for these earthquakes, constrained with teleseismic body and surface waveforms, to investigate the characteristics of earthquake ruptures along this fault zone. We obtained the source-time-functions and finite-fault rupture models for these five earthquakes. Results indicated that ruptures often propagated along-strike or down-dip. The ruptures were initiated from the middle crust (depth of approximately 12–17 km) and exhibited a comparable initiation behavior to their entire rupture. The rupture speeds and stress drops were approximately 2.0–2.5 km/s and 1.0–2.0 MPa, respectively. Five cascading asperities ruptured neighboring fault patches and did not overlap each other. The characteristics of earthquake source parameters and rupture processes obtained in this study are robust and helpful for future regional seismic hazard assessment and earthquake early warning studies. These cascading asperities might be related to the fault immaturity of the western Flores Thrust. Alternatively, these earthquakes may act as asperities located at the down-dip patches of the Sumbawa segment, and its shallower section still has a potential of ruptures with MW>7.0.

The 2019 Ms 4.2 and 5.2 Beiliu Earthquake Sequence in South China: Complex Conjugate Strike-Slip Faulting Revealed by Rupture Directivity Analysis

Abstract:The South China block has been one of the most seismically quiescent regions in China, and the geometries and activities of the Quaternary faults have remained less studied due to the limited outcrops. Thus, source parameters of small-to-moderate earthquakes are important to help reveal the location, geometry distribution, and mechanical properties of the subsurface faults and thus improve the seismic risk assessment. On 12 October 2019, two earthquakes (the M-s 4.2 foreshock and the M-s 5.2 mainshock) occurred within 2 s and are located in southern South China block, near the junction region of the large-scale northeast-trending fault zones and the less continuous north-west-trending fault zones. We determined the point-source parameters of the two events via P-wave polarity analysis and regional waveform modeling, and the resolved focal mechanisms are significantly different with the minimum 3D rotation angle of 52 degrees. We then resolved the rupture directivity of the two events by analyzing the azimuth variation of the source time duration and found the M-s 4.2 foreshock ruptured toward north-northwest for similar to 1.0 km, and the M-s 5.2 mainshock ruptured toward east-southeast (ESE) for similar to 1.5 km, implying conjugate strike-slip faulting. The conjugate causative faults have not been mapped on the regional geological map, and we infer that the two faults may be associated with the northwest-trending Bama-Bobai fault zone (the Shiwo section). These active faults are optimally oriented in the present-day stress field (northwest-southeast) and thus may now be potentially accumulating elastic strain to be released in a future large earthquake.
Rupture Pattern of the 2015 Alor Earthquake Sequence, Indonesia

Abstract:Abstract A sequence of earthquakes occurred on Alor Island, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia, beginning in November 2015 with the mainshock (Mw 6.2) on 4 November 2015. We calculate the centroid moment tensor (CMT) solutions for nine of the earthquakes with Mw≥3.9, which occurred between November 2015 and March 2016 using records from a temporary array of 30 broadband instruments in eastern Indonesia and Timor Leste (YS network). Our CMT results reveal an interesting pattern of ruptures in this order: (a) three foreshocks of Mw 4–5.3 all with strike-slip mechanisms that occurred with a centroid depth of ∼13 km in the three days prior to the mainshock, (b) the mainshock on 4 November 2015, with Mw 6.2 that occurred with a deeper centroid (∼25 km) and a strike-slip mechanism similar to the foreshocks, (c) followed by five aftershocks with Mw>3.9 at depth ∼3–15km. We further determine the fault plane and rupture direction of the mainshock and the largest foreshock (Mw 5.3) by relocating the hypocenter and examining its geometrical location with respect to the centroid. We find that the fault plane strikes 97°±9° from north and that the fault ruptures westward. We propose that the rupture of this sequence of events initiated at depth ∼10 km, propagating westward and triggering the mainshock to rupture at a deeper depth (within lower crust) on a similar faulting system. The aftershocks migrate back to shallower depths and occur mainly at depth <10 km.

Abstract:Large and shallow strike-slip earthquakes produce striking ground ruptures, damaging roads and infrastructure but providing great opportunities for examining the fault's structure. After the 2022 Mw 6.7 Menyuan earthquake, we observed abundant surface fractures by a combination of optical remote sensing, radar offset and unmanned aerial vehicle measurements. These fractures reveal a complex fault structure including apparent bending geometries and bifurcating branches, which are essential to understanding the mechanisms of faulting. In this paper, we used triangular dislocations to construct the fault geometry that reflected the distribution of measured strike changes but avoided unexcepted discontinuities and overlaps where the fault bent. The modeled fault geometry revealed an extensional releasing bend which was responsible for the southward branching of the fault rupture at its western edge. Our results also demonstrated the potential to explain the occurrence of aftershock clusters and to infer their fault geometries through the correlation analysis of the aftershock distribution and the slip induced stress field. The triangular dislocation model also enabled the calculation of the fault plane roughness and its spatial variation which directly controlled the fault slip magnitude and rupture termination. These analyses reveal an unprecedented level of detail of the fault structure and slip mechanics and, to some extent, offer insights into the physical processes and structural properties of crustal faults in the Earth's shallow crust.

Cascading Multi-Segment Rupture Process of the 2023 Turkish Earthquake Doublet on a Complex Fault System Revealed by Tele-Seismic P-Wave Back-Projection Method

Abstract:In this study, the vertical components of broadband teleseismic P wave data recorded by China Earthquake Network are used to image the rupture processes of the February 6th, 2023 Turkish earthquake doublet via back projection analysis. Data in two frequency bands (0.5–2 Hz and 1–3 Hz) are used in the imaging processes. The results show that the rupture of the first event extends about 200 km to the northeast and about 150 km to the southwest, lasting ∼90 s in total. The southwestern rupture is triggered by the northeastern rupture, demonstrating a sequential bidirectional unilateral rupture pattern. The rupture of the second event extends approximately 80 km in both northeast and west directions, lasting ∼35 s in total and demonstrates a typical bilateral rupture feature. The cascading ruptures on both sides also reflect the occurrence of selective rupture behaviors on bifurcated faults. In addition, we observe super-shear ruptures on certain fault sections with relatively straight fault structures and sparse aftershocks.

Abstract:The 3 August 2014 Ludian earthquake (M(w)6. 1, M(s)6. 5) is a disastrous strike-slip but not a large-scale event. Influenced by the radiation pattern, the signal-to-noise ratios of teleseismic data are low at certain azimuths, causing some difficulties in distinguishing the causative fault. This paper reviews the fast rupture process inversion of the Ludian earthquake for rapid earthquake emergency response, which was completed 2.4 hours after the earthquake occurrence, and introduces the following revision works. From the revised rupture models, results of two nodal planes of double couple both indicate rupture propagations toward the ground surface and strike directions. Based on the consistencies between rupture area and intensities and aftershock distributions, it can be concluded that the-Ludian earthquake was a left lateral strikeslip event ruptured on a nearly vertical fault with strike 162 degrees and dip 86 degrees. From the source time function determined in rupture process inversion, a large part of the seismic moment was released between 2 s and 5 s after the rupture initiation. The intensive moment release history may be associated with the relatively high surface wave magnitude and the serious disaster of this earthquake.

Abstract:The 25 October 2010 Mentawai tsunami earthquake (Mw 7.8) ruptured the shallow portion of the Sunda megathrust seaward of the Mentawai Islands, offshore of Sumatra, Indonesia, generating a strong tsunami that took 509 lives. The rupture zone was updip of those of the 12 September 2007 Mw 8.5 and 7.9 underthrusting earthquakes. High-rate (1 s sampling) GPS instruments of the Sumatra GPS Array network deployed on the Mentawai Islands and Sumatra mainland recorded time-varying and static ground displacements at epicentral distances from 49 to 322 km. Azimuthally distributed tsunami recordings from two deepwater sensors and two tide gauges that have local high-resolution bathymetric information provide additional constraints on the source process. Finite-fault rupture models, obtained by joint inversion of the high-rate (hr)-GPS time series and numerous teleseismic broadband P and S wave seismograms together with iterative forward modeling of the tsunami recordings, indicate rupture propagation ~50 km up dip and ~100 km northwest along strike from the hypocenter, with a rupture velocity of ~1.8 km/s. Subregions with large slip extend from 7 to 10 km depth ~80 km northwest from the hypocenter with a maximum slip of 8 m and from ~5 km depth to beneath thin horizontal sedimentary layers beyond the prism deformation front for ~100 km along strike, with a localized region having >15 m of slip. The seismic moment is 7.2 × 1020 N m. The rupture model indicates that local heterogeneities in the shallow megathrust can accumulate strain that allows some regions near the toe of accretionary prisms to fail in tsunami earthquakes.
