Abstract:Photocatalytic H2 evolution has been regarded as a promising technology to alleviate the energy crisis. Designing graphitic carbon nitride materials with a large surface area, short diffusion paths for electrons, and more exposed reactive sites are beneficial for hydrogen evolution. In this study, a facile method was proposed to dope P into a graphitic carbon nitride framework by calcining melamine with 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid. Meanwhile, PCN nanosheets (PCNSs) were obtained through a thermal exfoliation strategy. Under visible light, the PCNS sample displayed a hydrogen evolution rate of 700 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 43.8-fold higher than that of pure g-C3N4. In addition, the PCNS photocatalyst also displayed good photostability for four consecutive cycles, with a total reaction time of 12 h. Its outstanding photocatalytic performance was attributed to the higher surface area exposing more reactive sites and the enlarged band edge for photoreduction potentials. This work provides a facile strategy to regulate catalytic structures, which may attract great research interest in the field of catalysis.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H 2 ) production plays a crucial role in our pursuit of sustainable future energy solutions. Utilizing durable and affordable materials like graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) holds promise for competent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Optimizing the activity of g‐CN includes atomic‐level structural alterations by nonmetal doping, which offers active sites within the lattice and modifies the band-gap. In this study, we synthesized a phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride (P@g‐CN) photocatalyst using simple strategies, demonstrating its efficacy in water splitting. Our experiments confirm that P@g‐CN significantly outperforms pure g‐CN in terms of H 2 production rate. P-N bonds are introduced to the doped material, which serves as a bridge to transmit electrons, allowing photogenerated electrons to flow more easily and improving charge separation. In addition, the band gap of P@g-CN improves its potential for light absorption and reduction. The capacity of the sample for photocatalytic H 2 production rate achieved up to 1302.8 μmol/g/h, significantly surpassing that of pure g-CN. These results show that atomic-level structure engineering may effectively increase HER activity and provide direction for the development of possible photocatalysts.

Abstract:A simple method is developed to fabricate protonated porous graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (P‐PCNNS) by protonation–exfoliation of bulk graphitic carbon nitride (BCN) with phosphoric acid (H3PO4). The H3PO4 treatment not only helps to exfoliate the BCN into 2D ultrathin nanosheets with abundant micro‐ and mesopores, endowing P‐PCNNS with more exposed active catalytic sites and cross‐plane diffusion channels to facilitate the mass and charge transport, but also induces the protonation of carbon nitride polymer, leading to the moderate removal of the impurities of carbon species in BCN for the optimization of the aromatic π‐conjugated system for better charge separation without changing its chemical structure. As a result, the P‐PCNNS show much higher photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution and CO2 conversion than bare BCN and graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets.

Abstract:As an amorphous or semicrystalline material, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) displays poor photocatalytic activity owing to rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers, which is mainly caused by a high density of defects in the graphitic structure. In this work, a porous O-doped g-C3 N4 (P-CNO) nanosheet with a highly ordered architecture is fabricated by introducing a novel hydrothermal treatment to the precursor before the final thermal condensation. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (HER) and HER per surface area of P-CNO are 13.9 and 1.7 times higher than that of bulk g-C3 N4 . The improved photocatalytic activity is ascribed to a synergistic effect of O doping, a porous sheet-like morphology, and increased crystallinity. This work also provides a new approach for the synthesis of other polymer-based photocatalysts with high crystallinity and excellent performance.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production by water splitting is one of the most effective strategies for solar energy conversion and utilization. The metal-free polymeric carbon nitride (CN) has been widely used as an efficient photocatalyst for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, to date, the solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency of the CN-based photocatalysts is still low. Herein, to boost the photocatalytic activity of CN, controllable phosphorus atoms were introduced to form P-doped CN (PCN) via an evacuated ampoule calcination strategy. Compared with bare CN, the optimized PCN exhibits remarkably enhanced photocatalytic HER activity, with the HER rate up to 261.2 µmol h−1 and 171.6 µmol h−1 under the simulated solar light and visible-light illumination, respectively. It was revealed that the boosted photocatalysis for HER is mainly ascribed to the P dopants that can synergetically increase the visible-light absorption and facilitate the charge transfer process. This present work highlights improving the photocatalytic energy conversion efficiency by controllable tuning of the heteroatom doping degree in photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalytic H2 generation has been believed to be a hopeful technology to deal with the current energy shortage issue. Among multifarious photocatalysts, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has acquired enormous interests in virtue of its numerous advantages, such as peculiar physicochemical stability, favorable energy band structure and easy preparation. However, the insufficient light response range, low specific surface area, and inferior charge separation efficiency make its photocatalytic activity still unsatisfactory. In this work, the thermal exfoliation method was taken to prepare the thin g-C3N4 nanosheets with significantly improved specific surface area, which can afford more reaction sites and shorten the charge migration distance. Moreover, phosphorus (P) doping in g-C3N4 nanosheets can greatly expand its light absorption, improve the conductivity and charge-transfer capability. Due to the synergistic effect of these two strategies, the optimal H2 generation performance of P-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets came up to 1146.8 μmol g−1 h−1, which improved 15, 2.94 and 2.62 times compared to those of original bulk g-C3N4, thermally exfoliated g-C3N4 and P-doped bulk g-C3N4, respectively. The synergistic effect will inspire the design of other photocatalytic systems to achieve the efficient photocatalytic H2 generation activity.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) is a promising candidate for visible-light CO2 photoreduction, but suffers severe charge recombination due to its intrinsic π-conjugated skeleton. Herein, exogenous phosphorous (P) and carbon (C) are co-doped into the polymeric structure of CN to modulate the electronic structure. In virtue of the different electronegativity and valence electron structure of the co-dopants, an internal driving force is formed within the π-conjugated framework, which greatly accelerates the charge transfer and separation. The P and C co-doped CN (PCCN) exhibits a significantly improved CH4 evolution rate (41.85 μmol g−1h−1) under visible light irradiation, which is 12.5 times higher than the pristine CN. The P and C co-doping causes enhanced light absorption, promoted CO2 adsorption as well as inbuilt charge centers for efficient charge separation. This work offers new insights into the mutual effect of co-dopants on electronic structure rearrangement of novel photocatalysts for elevated photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is a tactic for solving the environmental pollution caused by greenhouse gases. Herein, NH4H2PO4 was added as a phosphorus source in the process of the hydrothermal treatment of melamine for the first time, and phosphorus-doped hollow tubular g-C3N4 (x-P-HCN) was fabricated and used for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Here, 1.0-P-HCN exhibited the largest CO production rate of 9.00 μmol·g−1·h−1, which was 10.22 times higher than that of bulk g-C3N4. After doping with phosphorus, the light absorption range, the CO2 adsorption capacity, and the specific surface area of the 1.0-P-HCN sample were greatly improved. In addition, the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs was enhanced. Furthermore, the phosphorus-doped g-C3N4 effectively activated the CO2 adsorbed on the surface of phosphorus-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts, which greatly enhanced the CO production rate of photocatalytic CO2 reduction over that of g-C3N4.

Abstract:Advances demonstrate that the incorporation of phosphorous into the network of nitrogen, sulfur, or fluorine‐doped carbon materials can remarkably enhance their oxygen and hydrogen evolution activities. However, the electrocatalytic behaviors of pristine phosphorous single‐doped carbon catalysts toward the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER) are rarely investigated and their corresponding active species are not yet explored. To clearly ascertain the effects of phosphorous doping on the OER and HER and identify the active sites, herein, phosphorous unitary‐doped graphite layers with different phosphorous species distributions are prepared and the correlations between the oxygen or hydrogen evolution activity and different phosphorous species are investigated, respectively. Results indicate that phosphorous single‐doped graphite layers show a superior oxygen evolution activity to most of the reported OER catalysts and the commercial IrO2 in alkaline medium, and comparable hydrogen evolution activity to most reported carbon catalysts in acidic medium. Moreover, the relevancies unveil that the COP species are the main OER active species, and the defects derived from the decomposition of C3P = O species are the main active sites for HER, as evidenced by density functional theory calculations, showing a new perspective for the design of more effective phosphorous‐containing water‐splitting catalysts.

Abstract:In addressing the industrial need for a simple, equipment-minimal, and non-toxic method of in-situ hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, this paper presents a cost-effective, environmentally friendly photocatalyst. Our design strategy focuses on the dual-element doping of phosphorus and sodium into graphitic carbon nitride (gC(3)N(4)), chosen to synergistically enhance photocatalytic performance. This approach yields a notable H2O2 production concentration of 3001.64 mu mol center dot g(-1) center dot L-1 within 100 min, using isopropanol as a sacrificial agent, which was 61-fold increase compared to bulk g-C3N4. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to elucidate the alterations in the band structure of the catalyst induced by dual-element doping, which consequentially engendered an asymmetric intrinsic electric field. Additionally, oxygen's transition state affinity due to phosphorus doping was also investigated to reveal the mechanisms of synergistic catalysis. This development contributes to meeting industrial demands for pollutant degradation via Fenton processes and presents a sustainable alternative to traditional H2O2 production methods.
Phosphorus and Sulphur Co-Doping of G-C3n4 Nanotubes with Tunable Architectures for Superior Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Abstract:Non-metal doping not only optimizes the energy band structure of g-C3N4 to improve the absorption of visible light, but also exacerbates the distortion of lowest and highest unoccupied molecular orbital plane, causing polarization, thereby improving photocatalytic activity. For the first time, S and P are co-introduced into g-C3N4 network to enhance photocatalytic performance and create various tubular morphologies. The ratio of S to P is crucial to control the tubular morphology and property. In the photocatalytic process, the separation of electrons and holes causes by the polarization of the S and P elements and the synergy of the tubular morphology results in new migration paths for photogenerated electrons and holes. Using optimized preparation conditions, g-C3N4 tubes co-doped with S and P (CNSP) reveal very high H-2 generation efficiency (163.27 umol/h), which is two orders of magnitude higher compared to that of pure g-C3N4 and apparent quantum yield is 18.93% at 420 nm. Fast degradation of Rhodamine B by using CNSP occurs within 5 min under visible light irradiation. Because of the reproducible process, the synthetic strategy provides a novel method for controlling the morphology of g-C3N4-based materials with super activity. Abstract:The ideal photocatalyst used for photocatalytic water splitting requires strong light absorption, fast charge separation/transfer ability and abundant active sites. Heteroatom doping offers a promising and rational approach to optimize the photocatalytic activity. However, achieving high photocatalytic performance remains challenging if just relying on single-element doping. Herein, Boron (B) and sulfur (S) dopants are simultaneously introduced into graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanotubes by supramolecular selfassembly strategy. The developed B and S co-doped g-C 3 N 4 nanotubes (B,S-TCN) exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic in the conversion of H 2 O into H 2 (9.321 mmol g -1 h -1 ), and the corresponding external quantum efficiency (EQE) reached 5.3% under the irradiation of λ = 420 nm. It is well evidenced by the closely combined experimental and (density functional theory) DFT calculations: (1) the introduction of B dopants can facilitate H 2 O adsorption and drive interatomic electron transfer, leading to efficient water splitting reaction. (2) S dopants can stretch the VB position to promote the oxidation ability of g-C 3 N 4 , which can accelerate the consumption of holes and thus inhibit the recombination with electrons. (3) the simultaneous introduction of B and S can engineer the electronic and energy level structural of g-C 3 N 4 for optimizing interior charge transfer. Finally, the purpose of maximizing photocatalytic performance is achieved.

Abstract:Electronic structure greatly determines the band structures and the charge carrier transport properties of semiconducting photocatalysts and consequently their photocatalytic activities. Here, by simply calcining the mixture of graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) and sodium borohydride in an inert atmosphere, boron dopants and nitrogen defects are simultaneously introduced into g‐C3N4. The resultant boron‐doped and nitrogen‐deficient g‐C3N4 exhibits excellent activity for photocatalytic oxygen evolution, with highest oxygen evolution rate reaching 561.2 µmol h−1 g−1, much higher than previously reported g‐C3N4. It is well evidenced that with conduction and valence band positions substantially and continuously tuned by the simultaneous introduction of boron dopants and nitrogen defects into g‐C3N4, the band structures are exceptionally modulated for both effective optical absorption in visible light and much increased driving force for water oxidation. Moreover, the engineered electronic structure creates abundant unsaturated sites and induces strong interlayer C–N interaction, leading to efficient electron excitation and accelerated charge transport. In the present work, a facile approach is successfully demonstrated to engineer the electronic structures and the band structures of g‐C3N4 with simultaneous introduction of dopants and defects for high‐performance photocatalytic oxygen evolution, which can provide informative principles for the design of efficient photocatalysis systems for solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) is regarded as a most promising photocatalyst, but the severe recombination of electron-hole pairs restrains its photocatalytic performance. Herein, a carbon nitride gradient homojunction with donor–acceptor (D-A) structure was successfully synthesized. The D-A structure promoted the electron delocalization, while gradient K intercalation helped establish a strong internal electric field from the interior to the surface. They synergistically inhibited the recombination of electron-hole pairs and led to fast charge transfer and much enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) performance. This work developed a novel method to promote the charge carrier transfer in carbon nitrides, which could provide a new perspective for the design and development of carbon nitride-based homojunctions in the application of PHE.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is considered a potential photoactive semiconductor for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). Although being active in producing hydrogen, it is in general suffering from severe charge recombination rate, low mobility of charge and narrow visible light response range largely, which has restricted its greater application. Existing reviews on g-C3N4 are lacking of systematic and summative view on the effects of the physical-chemical structure-activity relationship between g-C3N4 and the modification involving phosphorus (P). Many studies indicate that adding P into g-C3N4 could effectively elevate the photo-activity. Underlying reasons for the observed improved photo-activity are discussed in this review. Here, P-containing g-C3N4 photocatalysts are grouped into the categories of P elemental doping, composite with elemental P, as well as the addition of metal phosphide as cocatalysts. These P-containing g-C3N4 possess novel properties demonstrating favorable photocatalytic activities as compared with the other elemental (such as O, S, B)-based materials. Therefore, in this mini review, we summarize and discuss the advances on the P-containing g-C3N4 photocatalysts, including the preparation strategies, physicochemical properties, the application for hydrogen production as well as the related reaction mechanism. Importantly, the physical-chemical structure-activity relationship between g-C3N4 and the integrated P is revealed. Finally, an overview of the current research status and challenges on future is presented, which would be helpful in designing and developing other P-containing photocatalysts for various photocatalytic applications.

Phosphorus-Mo2C@carbon nanowires toward efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution: composition, structural and electronic regulation

Abstract:To explore high-performance electrocatalysts, electronic regulation on active sites is essentially demanded. Herein, we propose controlled phosphorus doping to effectively modify the electronic configuration of nanostructured Mo2C, accomplishing a benchmark performance of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Employing MoOx-phytic acid-polyaniline hybrids with tunable composition as precursors, a series of hierarchical nanowires composed of phosphorus-doped Mo2C nanoparticles evenly integrated within conducting carbon (denoted as P-Mo2C@C) are successfully obtained via facile pyrolysis under inert flow. Remarkably, P-doping into Mo2C can increase the electron density around the Fermi level of Mo2C, leading to weakened Mo-H bonding toward promoted HER kinetics. Further density functional theory calculations show that the negative hydrogen-binding free energy (Delta G(H)*) on pristine Mo2C gradually increases with P-doping due to electron transfer and steric hindrance by P on the Mo2C surface, indicating the effectively weakened strength of Mo-H. With optimal doping, a Delta G(H)* approaching 0 eV suggests a good balance between the Volmer and Heyrovsky/Tafel steps in HER kinetics. As expected, the P-Mo2C@C nanowires with controlled P-doping (P: 2.9 wt%) deliver a low overpotential of 89 mV at a current density of -10 mA cm(-2) and striking kinetic metrics (onset overpotential: 35 mV, Tafel slope: 42 mV dec(-1)) in acidic electrolytes, outperforming most of the current noble-metal-free electrocatalysts. Elucidating feasible electronic regulation and the remarkably enhanced catalysis associated with controlled P-doping, our work will pave the way for developing efficient noble-metal-free catalysts via rational surface engineering.

Abstract:Heteroatoms doping and morphology designing have been considered as effective approaches to enhancing the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), while few of them have focus on the synergistic effect of co-doping and the optical property of porous structure during the catalytic process. Herein, porous g-C3N4 sphere co-doped with K and I was designed and prepared to investigate the different role played during the reaction. Comparing with the pristine carbon nitride, the activity of prepared catalyst increased by 7.9 times to 75.2 μmol·h-1. Experiment results with density function theory calculation indicated the different roles of two elements played during the photocatalysis process and optical simulations were given to prove the enhancement of porous structure in light absorption ability. While the pore structure improved the light absorption and mass transfer capabilities of the catalyst, the co-doping of metal and non-metal developed the separation capabilities of the carriers and optimized the energy band structure respectively, which synergistically leaded to an enhanced performance of the photocatalysis.This article is protected by copyright.
