Abstract:The authors suggest a regularization method for determining scales for edge detection adaptively for each site in the image plane. Specifically, they extend the optimal filter concept of T. Poggio et al. (1984) and the scale-space concept of A. Witkin (1983) to an adaptive scale parameter. To avoid an ill-posed feature synthesis problem, the scheme automatically finds optimal scales adaptively for each pixel before detecting final edge maps. The authors introduce an energy function defined as a functional over continuous scale space. Natural constraints for edge detection are incorporated into the energy function. To obtain a set of optimal scales that can minimize the energy function, a parallel relaxation algorithm is introduced. Experiments for synthetic and natural scenes show the advantages of the algorithm. In particular, it is shown that this system can detect both step and diffuse edges while drastically filtering out the random noise. >

Abstract:Valproate (VPA) prevents attacks of migraine (1, 2) and persistent daily headache (3), yet its mechanism of action is not fully understood. Sorensen hypothesized that the prophylactic efficacy of VPA is related to its GABA-ergic activity (1). Hering and Steiner (4) gave four reasons for supporting this hypothesis: (i) the high GABA concentration in the hypothalamus suggests an important role for GABA in the neural control of endogenous circadian rhythms, which can be modulated by VPA administration; (ii) GABA and VPA inhibit the release of prolactin, which is occasionally elevated during the migraine attacks; (iii) GABA, and perhaps VPA, inhibits the Leao's cortical spreading depression, which has been implicated in the genesis of the migraine aura; (iv) the GABA level in the brain is increased during ischaemia, which sometimes occurs during the aura, and that may be evidence for a protective inhibitory activity of GABA (and possibly of VPA) in the brain. On the other hand, platelet levels of glutamate may be elevated in migraine with aura (5). Welch suggests that neuronal hyperexcitability caused by increased activity of excitatory amino acids such as glutamate is important in the pathogenesis of migraine. VPA may act in migraine by counterbalancing the neuronal hyperexcitability caused by heightened activity of glutamate (3).

Abstract:Sources of high propagation loss in holographic gratings on planar waveguides have been identified by viewing the gratings as holograms of the optical exposure apparatus. In order to simplify the optical system and increase the large-area uniformity of the beams, collimating lenses were eliminated and the gratings were formed by interference of spherical wave fronts. In order to define the grating shape without causing mask diffraction patterns, the desired grating region was outlined by negative photoresist over the surface of the exposed and developed grating pattern.
