Abstract:As reversible fluorescent probes, HTP-1 and HTP-2 have favourable applications for the detection of Zn2+ and H2S. Herein, the impact of solvent on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of HTP-1 and HTP-2 was comprehensively investigated. The obtained geometric parameters and infrared (IR) vibrational analysis associated with the intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) indicated that the strength of IHB for HTP-1 was weakened in the excited state. Moreover, structural torsion and almost no ICT behaviour indicated that the ESIPT process did not occur in HTP-1. Nevertheless, when the 7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD) group replaced the H atom, the IHB strength of HTP-2 was enhanced after photoexcitation, which inhibited the twisting of tetraphenylethylene, thereby opening the ESIPT channel. Notably, hole-electron analysis and frontier molecular orbitals revealed that the charge decoupling effect was the reason for the fluorescence quenching of HTP-2. Furthermore, the potential energy curves (PECs) revealed that HTP-2 was more inclined to the ESIPT process in polar solvents than in nonpolar solvents. With a decrease in solvent polarity, it was more conducive to the ESIPT process. Our study systematically presents the ESIPT process and different detection mechanisms of the two reversible probe molecules regulated by solvent polarity, providing new insights into the design and development of novel fluorescent probes.

Abstract:<p>The solvatochromic effect and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of N-(2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-3-hydroxy-4-oxo-4H-chromen-6-yl)butyramide (NDHB) molecules in different kinds of solvents were studied using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. Hydrogen bonding is the driving force in proton transfer (PT). Functional analysis of reduced density gradient confirms that the intramolecular hydrogen bond is strongly reinforced and thus has facilitated the PT in the first excited state (S<sub>1</sub>). In addition, the dielectric constant of the solvent can influence this process. These results are also confirmed by the comparison of relevant structural parameters and analysis of infrared vibration spectrum. Frontier molecular orbitals are analyzed in different kinds of solvents, illuminating the solvatochromic effect on spectral properties. Quantitative analyses of NBO and Mulliken's charge reveal that charge redistribution upon photoexcitation enhances the hydrogen bond. Potential energy curves are also scanned to clarify the effect of solvents on ESIPT. Compared with the energy barriers of PT in different kinds of solvents, ESIPT becomes highly favorable when the solvent dielectric constant decreases.</p>

Abstract:Recently, a fluorescence probe 1′-hydroxy-2′-acetonaphthone (HAN) detecting of metal ions is synthesized and characterized experimentally (Malini J, J. Photochem. Photobiol. A Chem., 2021, 418: 113431.). However, comprehensive research on its excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism and photophysical property is required. In the present work, we select four solvents with different dielectric constant to investigate the effect on ESIPT process and photophysical property of HAN molecule. By means of the density functional theory (DFT) and time-density functional theory (TDDFT) methods, all theoretical calculations are accomplished. Through insights into the hydrogen bond geometrical parameters, infrared (IR) vibrational spectra, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces, intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) strengthening mechanism can be verified, which providing powerful contribution to the occurrence of ESIPT reaction. Based on the analysis of frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and Mulliken’s charges and hole–electron, the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character is explained. Potential energy curves (PECs) reveal the proton transfer reaction take place more favorably in the S1 state under all solvent conditions. In addition, the energy barriers of QS molecule have ascended higher and higher from toluene (TOL) to sulfoxide (DMSO). The ESIPT behavior is preferred to proceed in the solvent with high dielectric constant instead of solvent with low dielectric constant.

Abstract:As is known, novel organic molecules with amazing characteristics of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) have become a hot and fascinating topic. Herein, our main attention is to investigate the dynamic behaviour of 2-benzoxazol-2-yl-6-triethylsilanylethynyl-phenol (BYTP), an intriguing derivative derived from 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HBO). Dependent on examining four different aprotic solvents with varying levels of polarity, we can confirm without a doubt that solvent polarity has a big impact on the way hydrogen bonding interactions, redistribution as well as reorganisation of charge, and associated ESIPT phenomena occur when light is involved. After carefully comparing and accurately measuring reaction barriers in different solvent environments, our groundbreaking findings strongly suggest that highly polar solvents are good at helping the ESIPT reaction for BYTP fluorophore happen. We really hope that this study can give us some insight into how BYTP behaves when it's excited and influenced by solvent polarity, while also opens up possibilities for future research and applications involving other new HBO derivatives.

Abstract:It is necessary to study the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer of complex molecular systems in solvents, which play important roles in photochemistry, photobiology, and optoelectronic materials. In this work, we have worked on the effect of solvent polarity on the ESIPT behaviour of 3-(4,5-Diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-9-phenyl-9,9a-dihydro-4aH-carbazol-4-ol (CHPI). Specifically, an in-depth study of hydrogen bonding behavior and charge complexation in different polar solvents has confirmed the excited state hydrogen bonding enhancement mechanism, which is the primary prerequisite to facilitate the ESIPT process. It is noteworthy that the intramolecular hydrogen bonding of CHPI compound is enhanced more significantly in nonpolar solvents. To further elaborate the ESIPT process, we analyzed the potential energy curves of the S0 and S1 states, and the comparison shows that the potential barrier decreases as the solvent polarity decreases. Therefore, the nonpolar solvent environment is more favorable for CHPI molecule to undergo the ESIPT process.

Abstract:Solvent‐polarity‐dependent ESIPT behavior for HBT‐TMS fluorophore. Inspired by the design of distinguished optical materials, novel organic molecules exhibiting excited state intramolecular proton‐transfer (ESIPT) characteristics have emerged as a prominent research topic. In this study, we focus on investigating the excited state dynamics of 2‐(5‐trifluoromethyl‐benzothiazol‐2‐yl)‐4,6‐bis‐trimethylsilanylethynyl‐phenol (HBT‐TMS), a novel color‐tunable multifunctional ESIPT emitter. By considering four different aprotic solvents with varying polarities, we confirm the influence of solvent polarity on photo‐induced hydrogen bonding interactions, charge redistribution, and associated ESIPT phenomena. Through comparison and quantification of the magnitudes of excited state reaction barriers in different solvents, our findings suggest that highly polar solvents facilitate the ESIPT reaction for HBT‐TMS fluorophore.

Concerning for the solvent-polarity-dependent conformational equilibrium and ESIPT mechanism in Pz3HC system: A novel insight

Abstract:In this report, we propose a new insight into the interaction between the solvent-polarity-dependent conformational equilibrium and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior of Pz3HC system in four different polar solvents (polarity order: ACN > THF > TOL > CYC). Using quantum chemistry method, we first announce a coexistence mechanism between Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3 in the ground state in four solvents based on the Boltzmann distribution. In particular, Pz3HC-1 is the principal configuration in non-polar solvent, but Pz3HC-3 is the principal configuration in polar solvent. In addition, the simulated fluorescence spectra interprets the negative solvatochromism effect of Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3 in four solvents. The evidence from intramolecular hydrogen bonding (IHB) parameters and electronic perspective collectively confirms the light-induced IHB enhancement and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties in Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3, which raises the likelihood of the ESIPT process. Combining the calculation of potential energy curve (PEC) and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC), we demonstrate that the ESIPT ease of Pz3HC-1 in different polar solvents obeys the order of CYC > TOL > THF > ACN, while the order of ESIPT ease in Pz3HC-3 is opposite. Notably, the ESIPT process of Pz3HC-3 in CYC solvent is accompanied by the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process. In addition, we also reveal that the enol* and keto* fluorescence peaks of Pz3HC-3 in CYC solvent are quenched by ISC and TICT process, respectively. Our work not only provides a satisfactory explanation of the novel dynamics mechanism for Pz3HC system, but also brings light to the design and application of new sensing molecules in the future.

Abstract:Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process based on 'naked' diazaborepins (NDABs) by modification on the parent structure (NDAB-H) is confirmed by experiment and theory calculation. An emission peak is detected at longer wavelength with large Stokes shift in toluene, and a new emission shoulder gradually appeared at short wavelength as the increase of solvent polarity, indicating the ESIPT process is tuned by solvent. Herein, the solvent effect and the mechanism of the ESIPT reaction are further investigated by DFT calculation. Without considering the effect of proton in solvent, seven aprotic solvents with different dielectric constant from DMSO (46.8) to cyclohexane (1.18) are chosen. Typical bond lengths, angles, electron distribution and transfer on frontier molecular orbital and thermodynamics analysis are discussed in different solvents for comparison. This work proved that the ESIPT process is inhibited as the increase of the solvent polarity that is in good agreement with the experimental date.

Abstract:The effects on the optical properties of an organic tricarbocyanine dye, IR-140 (5,5'-dichloro-11-diphenylamine-3,3'-diethyl-10,12-ethylenethiatricarbocyanine-perchlorate), in different polar solvents, have been investigated using the pump supercontinuum-probing technique. Solvent-induced spectral shifts of the absorption and emission spectra of IR-140 have also been observed in a variety of solvents. The dependence of the spectral features on the nature of the solvent has been explained by the conformational change because of different interactions between the dye molecule and the solvent.

Abstract:The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process involving dual hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) is of great interest in research and has significant potential for applications due to its flexible adjustability. In this work, the solvent polarity-dependent changes in structures, photophysical properties and ESIPT processes of 2-(2-hydroxy-3-hydroxyiminomethyl-5-methylphenyl)-benzimidazole (HHMB) with two asymmetric HBAs are investigated. Firstly, the orientation of intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) under different solvent polarities are explored. The computational results indicate that in non-polar solvents, the central hydroxyl group predominantly forms an IHB with the imine of the oxime group, resulting in large Stokes and near-infrared emission peaks. Conversely, in polar solvents, the central hydroxyl group links the imidazole group to form a stronger IHB with improved fluorescence efficiency. Additionally, the quantum chemical calculations are used to simulate the absorption–emission spectra and plot the frontier molecular orbitals, as well as the potential energy curves about ESIPT in different solvents. In conclusion, we elucidate the rationale behind the preferential formation of the biased IHBs and examine its impact on the ESIPT process by manipulating the solvent polarity. Theoretical studies on the dual HBAs molecule, exhibiting specific selectivity, pave the way for the development of higher-performance fluorescence probes and luminescent materials.

Abstract:Influence of solvation effects on intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state of probe PBQ and its reaction product PBQ‐1. Hydroxy‐2‐(4‐(pyrrolidin‐1‐yl)phenyl)benzo[g]quinolin‐4(1H)‐one (PBQ) is a ratiometric fluorescent probe based on excited‐state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). PBQ‐1 is the reaction product following its exposure to phosgene. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (DFT) have been used to study the excited state dynamics of PBQ and PBQ‐1 in different solvents. The results show that the reaction of PBQ with a transition from charge‐transfer excitation to local excitation before and after the reaction. It becomes more difficult for PBQ in the excited state to transfer proton with increasing solvent polarity. The product PBQ‐1 undergoes a molecular structure twist, and the angle of twisting decreases with increasing solvent polarity, resulting in a lower degree of rotational freedom of the hydroxyl group (5‐OH) at the 5th carbon position, which makes it more susceptible to ESIPT reactions. Therefore, PBQ‐1 is more susceptible to ESIPT as solvent polarity increases. Our theoretical calculations also elucidate the cause of the blue shift of PBQ fluorescence and the impact of the twisting intramolecular charge transfer phenomenon on the solvent effect. Furthermore, our study provides the theoretical guidance for the designing probe based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer.

ESIPT mechanism of triple emission with hydroxy-oxadiazole compound in DMSO: A theoretical reconsideration

Abstract:The compound in solvents with triple fluorescence feature of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) has a broad prospect in fluorescent probes, dye sensors and molecular synthesis of photosensitive dyes. An ESIPT molecule hydroxy-bis-2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazoles (compound 1a) emits two fluorescence peaks in dichloromethane (DCM) and three fluorescence peaks in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). [Dyes and Pigments 197 (2022) 109927]. Two longer peaks were attributed to enol and keto emission in both solvents and the shortest third peak in DMSO was just attributed simply. However, there is a significant difference in proton affinity between DCM and DMSO solvents which has influence on the position of emission peaks. Therefore, the correctness of this conclusion needs to be further verified. In this research, density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory method are used to explore ESIPT process. Optimized structures indicate ESIPT occurs through molecular bridge assisted by DMSO. The calculated fluorescence spectra demonstrate two peaks indeed originated from enol and keto in DCM, while interestingly three peaks are originated from enol, keto and intermediate in DMSO. Infrared spectrum, electrostatic potential and potential energy curves further prove existence of three structures. We reveal the mechanisms that compound 1a molecule occurs ESIPT in DCM solvent and undergoes an ESIPT through assisted by DMSO molecular bridge. Additionally, three fluorescence peaks in DMSO are reattributed. Our work is expected to provide an insight for understanding intra- and intermolecular interactions and synthesis of efficient organic lighting-emitting molecule.

Abstract:The solvent effect on absorption spectra and laser induced emission fluorescence spectra of 16 cyanine dyes in 18 solvents has been studied. The resutls show that the shift of absorption peak Delta nu(A) and the energy difference (nu(A-)nu(F)) depend not only on the refractive index of the solvent used, but also on its dielectric constant. Therefore, inc new functions f(n, epsilon) = n(2)-1/2n(1) + 1 + alpha epsilon-1/epsilon + 2 and F(n, epsilon) = epsilon-1/2 epsilon + 1 - n(2)-1/2n(2) + 1 are used instead of the Bayliss function f(n) = n(2)-1/2n(2) + 1 for absorption and fluorescence respectively. The effect of sovlent polarity on the position and intensity of the fluorescence peak and the order of (1)(n, pi*) and (1)(pi, pi*) states of these dyes has also been studied in this work.

Abstract:Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) has been well investigated in recent years, whereas we investigated the system containing double hydrogen bonds. We explore the influence of solvent polarity on the proton transfer mechanism for 9,9-dimethyl-3,6-dihydroxy-2,7-bis(4,5-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolyl)fluorene compound ((Oxa-OH)2). We consider three solvents with different polarities: cyclohexane, chloroform and acetonitrile. Various analytical methods indicate that hydrogen bonding is enhanced in the first excited state, which facilitates the proton transfer within the excited-state molecule. The frontier molecular orbital theory is employed to demonstrate that the system is subjected to photoexcitation to generate charge density redistribution. Three-dimensional potential energy surfaces are also constructed along the direction of hydrogen bond elongated, and their corresponding projection in the X-axis and Y-axis planes are plotted. The comparison of the potential barriers and the transition state structures of each proton transfer path reveals the excited-state intramolecular single proton transfer mechanism of the system. By comparing the potential barriers in different solvents, we also propose a mechanism that can modulate the excited-state proton transfer by changing the solvent polarity.

Abstract:As widely acknowledged, the realm of novel organic molecules boasting extraordinary attributes pertaining to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) has emerged as a captivating subject matter. In this context, our primary focus lies in delving into the excited-state behaviour exhibited by 2-benzoxazol-2-yl-4-triethylsilanylethynyl-phenol (BY4TP), an alluring derivative derived from 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HBO). Relying on the examination of four distinct aprotic solvents with varying degrees of polarities, we can unequivocally affirm that solvent polarity exerts a profound influence on the intricate interplay of hydrogen bonding interactions, charge redistribution and reorganisation, as well as associated ESIPT phenomena by light. Through meticulous comparison and precise measurement of reaction barriers across diverse solvent environments, our groundbreaking findings indicate that lowly polar solvents serve as efficacious facilitators for promoting the occurrence of the ESIPT reaction in BY4TP fluorophore. By considering atomic-electronegativity-regulated hydrogen bonding effects and excited state behaviours for BY4TP-S and BY4TP-Se, we also present low atomic electronegativity with Se substation promotes ESIPT reaction. We ardently anticipate that this study will provide invaluable insights into the behaviour exhibited by BY4TP upon excitation and under the influence of solvent polarity and atomic electronegativity, while simultaneously paving new avenues for future research endeavours and applications encompassing novel HBO derivatives.

Abstract:Proton transfer plays a crucial role in physical, chemical, and biological macromolecular systems, and the Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) effect is widely studied in the field of fluorescent materials. Fluorophores exhibiting the ESIPT effect, such as 2- (2′-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole (HBT) and salicylaldehyde, possess significant advantages over other types of fluorophores, including a large Stokes shift, long fluorescence lifetime, high fluorescence quantum yield, and ease of synthesis. Additionally, the dual-channel fluorescence emission of ESIPT fluorophores provides more opportunities for the development of "turn-on," "turn-off," and "ratio-type" fluorescence probes. Over the past three years (2020–2023), the number of publications on ESIPT fluorescent probes has steadily increased, indicating continued research value in this field. However, there have been few comprehensive reviews in this area, and the ESIPT effect is influenced by factors such as hydrogen bonding, microenvironment, and substituents, posing challenges to the development of efficient fluorescent probes. Therefore, herein, we systematically summarize ESIPT probes with excellent fluorescence properties and outstanding recognition abilities over the past three years, based on different ESIPT fluorophores. Subsequently, we provide an overview of prevalent recognition mechanisms employed by ESIPT fluorescence probes, including ion chelation, modification of active protons, modulation of electron cloud density, specificity achieved through enzymatic interactions, etc. Finally, a summary and prospects for future research are provided.

Abstract:In this work, we were devoted to explore the effect of solvent polarities on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process of 1-acetamido-4-hydroxyanthraquinone (AcHAQ) in three different polarity solvents (acetonitrile, chloroform, and cyclohexane) based on the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods, and thereby regulating the distribution ratio between the dual excited-state isomers (enol and keto). The calculated geometrical parameters and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra have confirmed the excited-state intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) strengthening mechanism. Natural bond orbital (NBO) population analysis indicates that the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) around IHBs has enhanced IHB, thereby triggering the ESIPT reaction. In addition, results obtained from the scanned potential energy curve (PEC) manifest that ESIPT process prefers to occur along the O 3 -H 2 ... O 1 IHB and energy barriers corresponding to the proton transfer in ACN are the lowest among all the studied solvents.

Solvent Effects on Electronic Transitions of Highly Dipolar Dyes: A Comparison of Three Approaches

Abstract:The solvatochromism of several polar solutes, including some that contain both hydrogen bond-donating and -accepting properties (coumarins 1, 102, 120, 151, 152, and 153; nile red; and 4-aminofluorenone), is analyzed in terms of three models: the Reichardt single parameter E T N polarity scale, the multiparameter Kamlet−Taft equation, and the reaction field model. We use a “step-forward” procedure to determine which terms of the Kamlet−Taft equation are statistically significant in fitting the data. These equations provide the best fits to the data in almost all cases. We also find a correlation between the parameters s and a, which quantify the effects on the transition energy related to the solvatochromic parameters π* and α, respectively. This relationship suggests that the magnitude of a is not indicative of the strength of the hydrogen-bonding interaction, but rather reflects the additional field produced from the dipole moment of a hydrogen bond-donating molecule that is held in an orientation that roughly parallels the solute dipole.
Theoretical Analysis of Solvent Effect on NAPBr Dye's Two-photon Absorption Ability and Non-Radiative Transition in Lipid Droplets Detection

Abstract:Two-photon fluorescence imaging has shown a promising application in biomedical imaging due to its outstanding advantages such as large penetration depth, low photo-damage, and photo-bleaching, etc. Among them, the two-photon fluorescent dye NAPBr, which can effectively select and monitor lipid droplets in living cells and biological tissues, has attracted extensive attention because of its excellent fluorescent properties. However, the research on the fluorescent abilities of two-photon fluorescent dyes in solvent environment is not sufficient. In our work, theoretical analysis reveals the internal mechanism of the solvent effect on geometric structure and photophysical properties of two-photon fluorescent dyes, especially non-radiative transition process, and holes-electrons distribution and transfer. This can provide a reference for the development of efficient two-photon absorption (TPA) molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. Related data also showed good regularity. Moreover, dye in four solvents have excellent photophysical properties: high fluorescence quantum efficiency (up to 66.60%), large Stokes shift (up to 108696 cm-1), and two-photon absorption cross section (up to 3658 GM). The medium dielectric constant solution environment can achieve a balance between two-photon absorption and fluorescence emission capabilities better, which lays a solid foundation for the study of TPA molecules with AIE functions in terms of solvent effects.
