Abstract:In the present study, Kolmogorov flow represents the stationary sinusoidal solution $(\sin y,0)$ to a two-dimensional spatially periodic Navier-Stokes system, driven by an external force. This system admits the additional non-stationary solution $(\sin y,0)+e^{-\nu t} (\sin y,0)$, which tends exponentially to the Kolmogorov flow at the minimum decay rate determined by the viscosity $\nu$. Enhanced damping or enhanced dissipation of the problem is obtained by presenting higher decay rate for the difference between a solution and the non-stationary basic solution. Moreover, for the understanding of the metastability problem in an explicit manner, a variety of exact solutions are presented to show enhanced and unenhanced dampings.

A hypocoercivity-exploiting stabilised finite element method for Kolmogorov equation

Abstract:We propose a new stabilised finite element method for the classical Kolmogorov equation. The latter serves as a basic model problem for large classes of kinetic-type equations and, crucially, is characterised by degenerate diffusion. The stabilisation is constructed so that the resulting method admits a \emph{numerical hypocoercivity} property, analogous to the corresponding property of the PDE problem. More specifically, the stabilisation is constructed so that spectral gap is possible in the resulting ``stronger-than-energy'' stabilisation norm, despite the degenerate nature of the diffusion in Kolmogorov, thereby the method has a provably robust behaviour as the ``time'' variable goes to infinity. We consider both a spatially discrete version of the stabilised finite element method and a fully discrete version, with the time discretisation realised by discontinuous Galerkin timestepping. Both stability and a priori error bounds are proven in all cases. Numerical experiments verify the theoretical findings.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the linearized Navier–Stokes system around monotone shear flows in a finite channel with non-slip boundary condition. We prove that if the flow is linearly stable for the Euler equations, then it is also linearly stable for the Navier–Stokes equations at high Reynolds number. More importantly, we establish the inviscid damping and enhanced dissipation estimates for the linearized Navier–Stokes system, which may be crucial for nonlinear stability. One of the key ingredients is the resolvent estimates of the linearized operator. For this, we develop the compactness method and establish some sharper estimates for the boundary layer corrector.

Abstract:We study the stability of the Couette flow under the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with full dissipation or only vertical dissipation. It was proved that if the initial velocity v(0) satisfies parallel to parallel to v(0)-(y,0)parallel to H-3 <= c nu(1/3) for some small c independent of the viscosity coefficient nu, then the solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations rapidly converges to some shear flow which is close to Couette flow for t >>nu(-1/3). Moreover, we prove the optimal enhanced dissipation estimate of the vorticity and inviscid damping estimate of the velocity. To this end, we introduce two new ideas: (1) we make the energy estimates in short time scale t <= nu(-1/6 )and long time scale t >= nu(-1/6) separately; (2) we construct a new multiplier to control the growth caused by echo cascades.

Abstract:In this article we extend the modern, powerful and simple abstract Hilbert space strategy for proving hypocoercivity that has been developed originally by Dolbeault, Mouhot and Schmeiser. As well-known, hypocoercivity methods imply an exponential decay to equilibrium with explicit computable rate of convergence. Our extension is now made for studying the long-time behavior of some strongly continuous semigroup generated by a (degenerate) Kolmogorov backward operator L. Additionally, we introduce several domain issues into the framework. Necessary conditions for proving hypocoercivity need then only to be verified on some fixed operator core of L. Furthermore, the setting is also suitable for covering existence and construction problems as required in many applications. The methods are applicable to various, different, Kolmogorov backward evolution problems. As a main part, we apply the extended framework to the (degenerate) spherical velocity Langevin equation. The latter can be seen as some kind of an analogue to the classical Langevin equation in case spherical velocities are required. This model is of important industrial relevance and describes the fiber lay-down in the production process of nonwovens. For the construction of the strongly continuous contraction semigroup we make use of modern hypoellipticity tools and pertubation theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pseudospectral bounds for the linearized operator of the Navier-Stokes equations around the 3D Kolmogorov flow. Using the pseudospectral bound and the wave operator method introduced in [22], we prove the sharp enhanced dissipation rate for the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. As an application, we prove that if the initial velocity satisfies parallel to U-0-k(f)(-2)sin(k(f)y), 0,0 parallel to(H2) <= c nu(7/4) (nu the viscosity coefficient) and k(f) is an element of (0, 1), then the solution does not transition away from the Kolmogorov flow. Abstract:The long-time behavior of solutions to different versions of Oseen equations of fluid flow on the 2D torus is analyzed using the concept of hypocoercivity. The considered models are isotropic Oseen equations where the viscosity acts uniformly in all directions and anisotropic Oseen-type equations with different viscosity directions. The hypocoercivity index is determined (if it exists) and it is shown that similar to the finite dimensional case of ordinary differential equations and differential-algebraic equations it characterizes its decay behavior.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the linear damping for the 2-D Euler equations around a class of shear flows under the assumption that the linearized operator has no embedding eigenvalues. For the symmetric flows, we obtain the same decay estimate of the velocity as the monotone shear flows. Moreover, we confirm a new dynamical phenomena found by Bouchet and Morita: the depletion of the vorticity at the stationary streamlines, which along with the vorticity mixing leads to the damping for the base flows with stationary streamlines.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of the inhomogeneous hyperdissipative Navier-Stokes equations on the whole space R-N, N >= 3. Compared with the classical inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes, the dissipative term -Delta u here is replaced by D(2)u, where D is a Fourier multiplier whose symbol is m(xi) = vertical bar xi vertical bar(N+2/4) For arbitrary small positive constants epsilon and delta, global well-posedness is showed for the data (rho(0), u(0)) such that (rho(0) - 1, u(0)) is an element of HN/2 + epsilon x H-delta with inf(x is an element of RN) rho(0) > 0. Dissipation enhancing properties for a class of Hamiltonian flows with closed streamlines

Abstract:We study the evolution of a passive scalar subject to molecular diffusion and advected by an incompressible velocity field on a 2D bounded domain. The velocity field is $u = \nabla^\perp H$, where H is an autonomous Hamiltonian whose level sets are Jordan curves foliating the domain. We focus on the high Péclet number regime ($Pe := \nu^{-1} \gg 1$), where two distinct processes unfold on well separated time-scales: streamline averaging and standard diffusion. For a specific class of Hamiltonians with one non-degenerate elliptic point (including perturbed radial flows), we prove exponential convergence of the solution to its streamline average on a subdiffusive time-scale $T_\nu \ll \nu^{-1}$ ,up to a small correction related to the shape of the streamlines. The time-scale $T_\nu$ is determined by the behavior of the period function around the elliptic point. To establish this result, we introduce a model problem arising naturally from the difference between the solution and its streamline average. We use pseudospectral estimates to infer decay in the model problem, and, in fact, this analysis extends to a broader class of Hamiltonian flows. Finally, we perform an asymptotic expansion of the full solution, revealing that the leading terms consist of the streamline average and the solution of the model problem.

Optimal enhanced dissipation for contact Anosov flows

Abstract:We show that for a contact Anosov flow on a compact manifold $ M $, the solutions to $ \partial_t u + X u = \nu \Delta u $, $ \nu > 0 $, where $ X $ is the generator of the flow and $ \Delta $, a (negative) Laplacian for some Riemannian metric on $ M $, satisfy \[ \| u ( t ) - \underline u \|_{L^2 ( M) } \leq C \nu^{-K} e^{ - \beta t } \| u( 0 ) \|_{L^2 ( M) }, \] where $ \underline u $ is the (conserved) average of $ u (0) $ with respect to the contact volume form, and $K$, $\beta$ are fixed positive constants. Since our class of flows includes geodesic flows on manifolds of negative curvature, this provides many examples of very precise optimal enhanced dissipation in the sense of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1911.01561" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1911.01561">arXiv:1911.01561</a>] and [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2304.05374" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.05374">arXiv:2304.05374</a>]. The proof is based on results about stochastic stability of Pollicott--Ruelle resonances [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1407.8531" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1407.8531">arXiv:1407.8531</a>].

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the global well-posedness and large-time behavior of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with hyperbolic heat conduction, where the heat flux is assumed to satisfy Cattaneo's law. When the initial perturbation is small and regular, we establish the global existence of the classical solution without any additional assumption on the relaxation time τ. Furthermore, assuming the initial perturbation belongs to a negative Sobolev space, we obtain the optimal time-decay rates of the high-order spatial derivatives of solutions by using a pure energy method instead of complicated spectral analysis. It is also observed that the heat flux, due to its damping structure, decays to the motionless state at a faster time-decay rate compared to density, velocity, and temperature.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new kind of hyperbolic geometric flows - dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow. This kind of flow is defined by a system of quasilinear wave equations with dissipative terms. Some interesting exact solutions are given, in particular, a new concept hyperbolic Ricci soliton is introduced and some of its geometric properties are described. We also establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for the dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of the flow defined on the Euclidean space of dimension larger than 2. Wave character of the evolving metrics and curvatures is illustrated and the nonlinear wave equations satisfied by the curvatures are derived.

Abstract: We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, this is the first global well-posedness result for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations.

Abstract:We study some dyadic models for incompressible magnetohydrodynamics and Navier–Stokes equation. The existence of fixed point and stability of the fixed point are established. The scaling law of Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber arises from heuristic analysis. In addition, a time-dependent determining wavenumber is shown to exist; moreover, the time average of the determining wavenumber is proved to be bounded above by Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber. Additionally, based on the knowledge of the fixed point and stability of the fixed point, numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the energy spectrum in the inertial range below Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber.

Nonlinear stability threshold for compressible Couette flow

Abstract:This paper concerns the Couette flow for 2-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations (N-S) in an infinitely long flat torus $\Torus\times\R$. Compared to the incompressible flow, the compressible Couette flow has a stronger lift-up effect and weaker dissipation. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no work on the nonlinear stability in the cases of high Reynolds number until now and only linear stability was known in \cite{ADM2021,ZZZ2022}.In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability of 2-D compressible Couette flow in Sobolev space at high Reynolds numbers. Moreover, we also show the enhanced dissipation phenomenon and stability threshold for the compressible Couette flow. First, We decompose the perturbation into zero and non-zero modes and obtain two systems for these components, respectively. Different from \cite{ADM2021,ZZZ2022}, we use the anti-derivative technique to study the zero-mode system. We introduce a kind of diffusion wave to remove the excessive mass of the zero-modes and construct coupled diffusion waves along characteristics to improve the resulting time decay rates of error terms and derive a new integrated system \cref{anti}. Secondly, we observe a cancellation with the new system \cref{anti} so that the lift-up effect is weakened. Thirdly, the large time behavior of the zero-modes is obtained by the weighted energy method and a weighted inequality on the heat kernel \cite{HLM2010}.In addition, with the help of the Fourier multipliers method, we can show the enhanced dissipation phenomenon for the non-zero modes by commutator estimates to avoid loss of derivatives. Finally, we complete the higher-order derivative estimates to close the a priori assumptions by the energy method and show the stability threshold.

Enhanced dissipation and temporal decay in the Euler-Poisson-Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:This paper investigates the global well-posedness and large-time behavior of solutions for a coupled fluid model in $\mathbb{R}^3$ consisting of the isothermal compressible Euler-Poisson system and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through the drag force. Notably, we exploit the dissipation effects inherent in the Poisson equation to achieve a faster decay of fluid density compared to velocities. This strategic utilization of dissipation, together with the influence of the electric field and the damping structure induced by the drag force, leads to a remarkable decay behavior: the fluid density converges to equilibrium at a rate of $(1+t)^{-11/4}$, significantly faster than the decay rates of velocity differences $(1+t)^{-7/4}$ and velocities themselves $(1+t)^{-3/4}$ in the $L^2$ norm. Furthermore, under the condition of vanishing coupled incompressible flow, we demonstrate an exponential decay to a constant state for the solution of the corresponding system, the damped Euler-Poisson system.

Abstract:In this article we develop a new abstract strategy for proving ergodicity with explicit computable rate of convergence for diffusions associated with a degenerate Kolmogorov operator L. A crucial point is that the evolution operator L may have singular and nonsmooth coefficients. This allows the application of the method e.g. to degenerate and singular particle systems arising in Mathematical Physics. As far as we know in such singular cases the relaxation to equilibrium can't be discussed with the help of existing approaches using hypoellipticity, hypocoercivity or stochastic Lyapunov type techniques. The method is formulated in an L2-Hilbert space setting and is based on an interplay between Functional Analysis and Stochastics. Moreover, it implies an ergodicity rate which can be related to L2-exponential convergence of the semigroup. Furthermore, the ergodicity method shows up an interesting analogy with existing hypocoercivity approaches. In the first application we discuss ergodicity of the N-particle degenerate Langevin dynamics with singular potentials. The dual to this equation is also called the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation with an external confining potential. In the second example we apply the method to the so-called (degenerate) spherical velocity Langevin equation which is also known as the fiber lay-down process arising in industrial mathematics.
