Abstract:A new type of core-shell upconversion nanoparticles which can be effectively excited at 795 nm has been designed and synthesized through spatially confined doping of neodymium (Nd(3+)) ions. The use of Nd(3+) ions as sensitizers facilitates the energy transfer and photon upconversion of a series of lanthanide activators (Er(3+), Tm(3+), and Ho(3+)) at a biocompatible excitation wavelength (795 nm) and also significantly minimizes the overheating problem associated with conventional 980 nm excitation. Importantly, the core-shell design enabled high-concentration doping of Nd(3+) (~0 mol %) in the shell layer and thus markedly enhanced the upconversion emission from the activators, providing highly attractive luminescent biomarkers for bioimaging without autofluorescence and concern of overheating.

Abstract:The enthusiasm for research on lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles is driven by both a fundamental interest in the optical properties of lanthanides embedded in different host lattices and their promise for broad applications ranging from biological imaging to photodynamic therapy. Despite the considerable progress made in the past decade, the field of upconversion nanoparticles has been hindered by significant experimental challenges associated with low upconversion conversion efficiencies. Recent experimental and theoretical studies on upconversion nanoparticles have, however, led to the development of several effective approaches to enhancing upconversion luminescence, which could have profound implications for a range of applications. Herein we present the underlying principles of controlling energy transfer through lanthanide doping, overview the major advances and key challenging issues in improving upconversion luminescence, and consider the likely directions of future research in the field.

Abstract:Optical tuning of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention over the past decade because this development allows the advance of new frontiers in energy conversion, materials science, and biological imaging. Here we present a rational approach to manipulating the spectral profile and lifetime of lanthanide emission in upconversion nanoparticles by tailoring their nonlinear optical properties. We demonstrate that the incorporation of energy distributors, such as surface defects or an extra amount of dopants, into a rare-earth-based host lattice alters the decay behavior of excited sensitizers, thus markedly improving the emitters' sensitivity to excitation power. This work provides insight into mechanistic understanding of upconversion phenomena in nanoparticles and also enables exciting new opportunities of using these nanomaterials for photonic applications.

Abstract:Hydrothermal synthesis process and luminescence properties of rare earth doped double tungstates NaRe(WO_4)_2 nanocrystals have been investigated.The hydrothermal synthesis temperatures changed with different Re~(3+) ions.The rare earth ions were found to be located at anti-inversion symmetry in the NaRe(WO_4)_2 crystals.The strong green upconversion luminescence of Er~(3+) and Yb~(3+) co-doped NaRe(WO_4)_2 nanocrystals under 980 nm excitation could be observed,mechanism of luminescence was also discussed.

Abstract:The upconversion emission of rare-earth nanocrystals, with the advantages of near-infrared excitation, visible/ultraviolet or short-wavelength near-infrared emission, has the great potential for applications in the fields of microlasers, super-resolution imaging, optogenetics, local temperature detection, and multi-channel imaging. Aiming at addressing the low quantum efficiency and the tedious upconversion emission studies, the correlation of the composition and structure of rare-earth nanocrystals with the upconversion emissions was introduced, and the influences from electricitic and magnetic field, pressure and temperature on the upconversion emission were discussed in this review.

Abstract:The rare-earth nanocrystals containing Er3+ emitters offer very promising tools for imaging applications, as they can not only exhibit up-conversion luminescence but also down-conversion luminescence in the second near-infrared window (NIR II). Doping non-lanthanide cations into host matrix was demonstrated to be an effective measure for improving the luminescence efficiency of Er3+ ions, while still awaiting in-depth investigations on the effects of dopants especially those with high valence states on the optical properties of lanthanide nanocrystals. To address this issue, tetravalent Zr4+ doped hexagonal NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals were prepared, and the enhancement effects of the Zr4+ doping level on both up-conversion luminescence in the visible window and down-conversion luminescence in NIR II window were investigated, with steady-state and transient luminescence spectroscopies. The key role of the local crystal field distortions around Er3+ emitters was elucidated in combination with the results based on both of Zr4+ and its lower valence counterparts, e.g., Sc3+, Mg2+, Mn2+. Univalent ions such as Li+ was utilized to substitute Na+ ion rather than Gd3+, and the synergistic effects of Zr4+ and Li+ ions by co-doping them into NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals were investigated toward optimal enhancement. Upon optimization, the up-conversion emission of co-doped NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals was enhanced by more than one order of magnitude compared with undoped nanocrystals. The current studies thus demonstrate that the local crystal field surrounding emitters is an effective parameter for manipulating the luminescence of lanthanide emitters.

Abstract:Rare earth nanomaterials, which feature long-lived intermediate energy levels and intraconfigurational 4f-4f transitions, are promising supporters for photon upconversion. Owing to their unique optical properties, rare earth upconversion nanomaterials have found applications in bioimaging, theranostics, photovoltaic devices, and photochemical reactions. Here, we review recent advances in the photon upconversion processes of these nanomaterials. We start by considering energy transfer models involved in the study of upconversion emissions, as well as well-established synthesis strategies to control the size and shape of rare earth upconversion nanomaterials. Progress in engineering energy transfer pathways, which play a dominant role in determining upconversion emission outputs, is then discussed. Lastly, representative optical applications of these materials are considered. The aim of this review is to provide inspiration for researchers to explore novel upconversion nanomaterials and extended optical applications.

Abstract:Rare-earth-doped upconversion nanoparticles are attracting considerable attention because of their stable, coherent, narrowband and multi-colour luminescence, which features less dephasing effects, crosstalk, photo-blinking and photo-bleaching compared with quantum dots and organic dyes. However, due to the 4 f –4 f forbidden transitions of rare-earth ions, upconversion nanoparticles exhibit long luminescence decay times, ranging from microseconds to milliseconds, restricting their application in time-dependent nanophotonic devices. Here we fabricate a tilted plasmonic nanocavity to shorten the luminescence decay time of a rare-earth-doped nanoparticle to sub-50 ns while maintaining high quantum efficiency enhancement, tunable polarization-dependent and far-field directional emissions and selective polychromatic chirality. We expect this new type of ultrafast, directional and polarized luminescence of a rare-earth-doped nanoparticle to vigorously promote the development of coherent single-photon sources, quantum communications and nanolasers.

Abstract:The low efficiency of upconversion luminescence hinders the pratical applications in many optical fields. During the past years, much attention have focused on the fluorides, reports of lanthanum vanadate (LaVO4) in oxides are scarce. Herein, a series of LaVO4:Yb3+/Er3+ crystals codoping with Ba2+ ions are synthesized through one-pot facile hydrothermal route. Many instruments, such as XRD, ICP, TEM equipped with EDS, luminescence spectroscopy are applied to characterize the products. By optimizing the impurity doping content to 15 mol%, the upconversion luminescence intensities of the green and red emissions are enhanced by 23 and 25 times, respectively. A formation mechanism for morphology evolution is proposed. The enhancement of upconversion performance are systematacially investigated upon the grain size, crystal structure symmetry and doping concentration. Moreover, additional operations are carried out by DFT calculations to confirm the experimental result. This work will guide to enhance upconversion performance based on lanthanum vanadate nanocrystals through impurity doping, which may realize the prospective applications in many fields.

Significant Enhancement of the Upconversion Emission in Highly Er 3+ ‐doped Nanoparticles at Cryogenic Temperatures

Abstract:Relatively low efficiency is the bottleneck for the application of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). The high-level doping strategy realized in recent years has not improved the efficiency as much as expected. It is argued that cross relaxation (CR) is not detrimental to upconversion. Here we combine theoretical simulation and spectroscopy to elucidate the role of CR in upconversion process of Er3+ highly doped (HD) UCNPs. It is found that if CR is purposively suppressed, upconversion efficiency can be significantly improved. Specifically, we demonstrate experimentally that inhibition of CR by introducing cryogenic environment (40 K) enhances upconversion emission by more than two orders of magnitude. This work not only elucidates the nature of CR and its non-negligible adverse effects, but also provides a new perspective for improving upconversion efficiency. The result can be directly applied to cryogenic imaging and wide range temperature sensing.

Abstract:Rare-earth doped upconversion luminescence is important for display and imaging field due to its narrow band, multicolor, long lifetime and high stability. However, low quantum yield of upconversion energy transfer, weak excited states absorption and slow spontaneous radiation rates lead to weak upconversion luminescence, which may dramatically limit the practical application of upconversion nanoparticles. Here, we report a metal-sheet-shaped plasmonic nanocavity consisting of gold and silver micro-sheets. It is found that the upconversion processes (including quantum yield of energy transfer, excited states absorption and spontaneous radiation rates) were enhanced by strong local electromagnetic field of the plasmonic nanocavity when RE3+ nanoparticles were filled in the plasmonic nanocavity. The significant enhancement of the luminescence and clear directional radiation were observed under 980 nm laser excitation. By adjusting the nanogap distance of the plasmonic nanocavity, we achieved a 75-fold enhancement in 654 nm emission. Benefiting from the plasmonic nanocavity, the upconversion luminescence exhibited a directional emission, which indicates the plasmonic near-field excitation contributed to the luminescence enhancement. These findings provide a candidate for ring light source and bio-imaging application.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles capable of converting near-infrared excitation into UV and visible emissions have attracted considerable research interests in recent years. Low-density near-infrared light needed for excitation of these nanoparticles is nondestructive and highly penetrating, offering significant technological advantages for biological and photonic applications such as remote neuron modulation, super-resolution imaging, and short-wavelength lasing. In this review, we describe several emerging classes of upconversion nanoparticles that have been developed to promote these technological applications by providing boosted emission intensities. We explain how heavy doping, thermal stimulating, and hybridizing can be harnessed to maximize absorption of excitation light and minimize quenching processes in these nanomaterials.

Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln3+) ions doped upconversion (UC) nanosheets have attracted tremendous attention such as displays, sensing, bioimaging and lasers etc, which was benefitting from the intriguing optical characters of Ln3+. However, the field of UC nanosheets has been hindered by low UC conversion efficiencies associate with nonradiative relation (NR) occurring by defect, the existence and influence of defects still cannot be eliminated completely. In this work, we design introduce the impurity energy level by doping Er3+in Bi3O4Br:Er3+ nanocrystal materials, which was closed with the intermediate band (IB) formed by oxygen vacancies defects. The density functional theory calculations confirm the IB energy level was closed with the intermediate excited states of Er3+, which provided the potential to tailored the ground state carriers transition from matrix semiconductor to Er3+ and thus tool to counteract the effect of NR and even enhance the UC luminescence performance. The photo-current results evidenced that the photocarrier success transition from IB to Er3+ intermediate excited states energy level leads to a sharp decrease in the surface carrier, on the contrary, the electron population on the excited state energy level of Er3+ have increased. As a result, compared with unmodified sample the UC emission intensity under excited by 980 nm of green and red is enhanced by 7 and 4 times respectively. This work paves the way to design efficient UC nanosheets through by energy transfer (ET) combine matrix semiconductor with RE and greatly enriches the understanding about the ET behavior of RE.

Abstract:Up-conversion is an anti-Stokes optical process that can emit ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared light by converting low-energy near-infrared excitation photon radiation. With the advent of nanotechnology and the inexpensive high-power infrared diode lasers, the rare earth-doped up-conversion luminescent nanoparticles have been extensively studied for its potential applications in various fields. In recent years, rare earth-doped up-conversion nanoparticles have been developed as a promising alternatives luminescent optical labels to organic fluorophores and quantum dots for applications in biological assays and medical imaging. The unique optical property of rare earth-doped up-conversion nanoparticles offers low autofluorescence, less scattering and absorption, and deep penetration in biological samples. In this chapter, we give a general introduction to rare earth up-conversion nanoparticles, including the rare earth up-conversion materials, up-conversion mechanisms, synthesis methods, surface modifications, optical properties tuning and so on.

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals that converted near-infrared radiation into emission in the ultraviolet spectral region offer many exciting opportunities for drug release, photocatalysis, photodynamic therapy, and solid-state lasing. However, a key challenge is the development of lanthanide-doped nanocrystals with efficient ultraviolet emission, due to low conversion efficiency. Here, we develop a dye-sensitized, heterogeneous core–multishelled lanthanide nanoparticle for ultraviolet upconversion enhancement. We systematically study the main influencing factors on ultraviolet upconversion emission, including dye concentration, excitation wavelength, and dye-sensitizer distance. Interestingly, our experimental results demonstrate a largely promoted multiphoton upconversion. The underlying mechanism and detailed energy transfer pathway are illustrated. These findings offer insights into future developments of highly ultraviolet-emissive nanohybrids and provide more opportunities for applications in photo-catalysis, biomedicine, and environmental science.

Abstract:The inherent low-efficiency for upconversion fluorescence materials constricts their further applications in many research domains. Over the last decades, considerable efforts have been paid to the fluorides, less works concering LaVO4 are reported. Based on series of impurity content-dependent experiments, Ti4+ ions doped LaVO4:Yb3+/Er3+ crystals are hydrothermally fabricated. The products are characterized by XRD, ICP, TEM and luminescence spectroscopy. Through modulating the Ti4+ ions doping concentration, the UCL intensity of 533 nm and 664 nm emissions are greatly intensified. The reasons are analyzed on the basis of three major factors. Meanwhile, extra DFT calculations are performed to support the experimental result. This report paves a new way for enhancing upconversion luminescence intensity of LaVO4 nanocrystals based on impurity doping.
