Abstract:The one-step conversion of cellulose to ethanol is particularly attractive but extremely challenging. Herein, we reported a multifunctional catalyst composed of Pt/WOx and hollow Pt@HZSM-5 for an efficient one-pot conversion of cellulose to ethanol with a high yield of 54.4 C mol %. In this study, the WOx catalyst mainly promoted the cleavage of C-C bonds for the hydrogenolysis of cellulose to glucose and intermediate glycolaldehyde, then quickly transferred to the Pt active sites to produce ethylene glycol (EG), followed by the dehydration of EG to ethanol over the acid sites of hollow HZSM-5 as well as WOx species. Specifically, the Pt nanoparticles encapsulated in the cavity of hollow HZSM-5, which enhanced the activity for C-O cleavage of EG, led to an excellent yield of ethanol. The highly efficient cooperation of the three components of Pt, WOx, and hollow HZSM-5 realized the one-pot production of cellulosic ethanol in complex consecutive reactions.

Abstract:Efficient utilization of renewable biomass plays a vital role in CO2 mitigation. Direct conversion of cellulose, the most abundant fraction in lignocellulosic biomass, into ethylene glycol is a promising route. In this work, by using the biowaste pomelo peel as the carbon precursor, the Ru–WOX/biochar (BC) bifunctional catalyst was prepared via pyrolysis in a nitrogen atmosphere without further reduction. Cellulose could be efficiently converted into ethylene glycol with a yield of 68.8% after 10 h using Ru–WOX/BC at the temperature of 220 °C and 3 MPa H2. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, H2 pressure and catalysts obtained from different pyrolysis temperatures on the yield of ethylene glycol were investigated. The characterization and reaction results showed that the gas generated from pyrolysis of pomelo peel could partially reduce ruthenium precursor to metallic form. Metallic Ru can not only promote the reduction of W6+ to W5+, but also work on hydrogenation reaction. The catalyst and preparation method have a promising application in cellulose conversion.

Abstract:Ru-WO X composites are usually bi-functional catalysts for cellulose hydrogenolysis, but the proportion/synergism of Ru (metal) and WO X (acidity) are mismatched/unclear, this leads to low ethylene glycol (EG) yield. In this work, we doped Ru‐WO X on low-costed biochar for cellulose hydrogenolysis. The acid-metal balance was adjusted by change the WO X load, and our results show that the activity and EG yield have the order of Ru-30WO X -C > Ru-40WO X -C > Ru-20WO X -C > Ru-10WO X -C, and it is interesting found that a linear relationship between acid/metal ratio and EG yield. Under the optimum conditions (240 °C, 3 MPa and 3 h), Ru-30WO X -C catalyst can achieve 100% cellulose conversion and 61.3% EG yield. 30%WO X facilitates Ru dispersion/reduction, and provides rich acid sites, accompanied by a large number of acid centers (oxygen vacancies), this more easily adsorbed cellulose monomer and activated glucose to glycolaldehyde, and benefit to EG productive. This work provides a guidance to design new bio-functional catalysts for biomass conversion.

Kinetic Insight into the Effect of the Catalytic Functions on Selective Conversion of Cellulose to Polyols on Carbon-Supported WO 3 and Ru Catalysts

Abstract:Efficient conversion of cellulose, the most abundant biomass on Earth, to chemicals in high yields remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report the marked change in the distribution of polyol products in the cellulose reaction on Ru/C and WO3/C, strongly depending on the competitive reactions of the glucose intermediate. WO3 crystallites not only promote, as a solid acid, the efficient hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, but also catalyze the selective cleavage of the C-C bonds in glucose and other C-6 sugar intermediates, leading to the formation of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, in competition with the sugar hydrogenation to the corresponding C-6 polyols (e.g. sorbitol) on Ru/C. The basic C support, behaving similar to other solid bases (i.e. MgO), catalyzes the isomerization of glucose into fructose, leading to the favored formation of propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol. Such strong dependence of the product distribution on the catalytic functions is clarified by the kinetic analysis of the three competitive reactions of glucose, including its hydrogenation, isomerization and C-C bond cleavage. Importantly, such kinetic analysis can predict the maximum selectivity ratio of propylene glycol to ethylene glycol, which is 2.5, for example, at 478 K under the reaction conditions in this work, corresponding to a maximum yield of propylene glycol of similar to 71%. These understandings shed new insights into the selective conversion of cellulose, which provides guidance for the rational design of catalyst functions and tuning of reaction parameters towards the controllable synthesis of specific products from cellulose. Abstract:Converting cellulose to ethylene glycol has been widely reported, while glucose is seldomly used to produce ethylene glycol. This is challenging due to side reactions such as glucose hydrogenation and isomerization, which have lower activation barriers than retro-aldol condensation. Moreover, cellobiose, rather than glucose, is main intermediates in obtaining ethylene glycol from cellulose. In this study, we found that the in situ synthesized RuxWy/biochar catalyst exhibited high activity for converting glucose to EG. The Ru3.5W35/biochar catalyst achieved the highest EG yield of 61.61

Abstract:The one-step conversion of cellulose to C6-alcohols via green and energy efficient approaches has, as far as we are aware, not been reported. Such a process presents a considerable challenge, the two key problems being (1) finding a suitable solvent that dissolves the cellulose, and (2) the development of advanced catalytic chemistry for selective cleavage of the C-O-C bonds (glycosidic bonds) connecting glucose residues. The dissolution of cellulose has been recently realized by using ionic liquids as green solvents; there is still no efficient method, such as selective hydrogenation, for the precise C-O-C cleavage under mild conditions, however. Cellobiose is a glucose dimer connected by a glycosidic bond and represents the simplest model molecule for cellulose. We disclose in this communication that the one-step conversion of cellobiose to C6-alcohols can be realized by selectively breaking the C-O-C bonds via selective hydrogenation using a water-soluble ruthenium nanocluster catalyst under 40 bar H2 pressure.
Cellulose Conversion to Polyols on Supported Ru Catalysts in Aqueous Basic Solution

Abstract:It is of great significance and challenge to achieve direct conversion of cellulose to specific polyols, e.g., ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. For such selective conversion, a novel one-pot approach was studied by combination of alkaline hydrolysis and hydrogenation on supported Ru catalysts. A wide range of bases including solid bases, e.g., Ca(OH)2 and La2O3, and phosphate buffers were examined in the cellulose reaction in water, and the cellulose conversions and polyol products depended largely on the basicity or pH values in the aqueous solutions. Ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, and especially 1,2,5-pentanetriol were obtained with selectivities of 15%, 14% and 22%, respectively, at 38% cellulose conversion at pH 8 in phosphate buffer solution. These preliminary results provide potentials for efficient conversion of cellulose to targeted polyols by using the advantages of bases.

Abstract:The conversion of fructose, derived from biomass, into 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) offers a promising approach for reducing the carbon footprint and achieving high atom economy. However, effective regulation of this transformation to minimize side reactions remains a challenge. In this study, a biochar supported RuWCu catalyst was developed demonstrating high activity of converting fructose to 1,2-propanediol with a favorable yield of 48.1% under optimized reaction conditions of 4 MPa H2, 210 degrees C, and 3 h. The calcination temperature and reduction temperature affected the states of Ru, W, and Cu, which in turn affected the metal-acid sites. Optimal results were obtained with a calcination temperature of 400 degrees C and a reduction temperature of 300 degrees C, resulting in a high yield of 1,2-PDO. The Ru0.5W36Cu7/biochar showed a good reuse potential with negligible activity loss after the fifth run. These findings contribute to the development of efficient catalysts for biomass conversion and highlight the potential of biochar-supported catalysts in sustainable chemical transformations. A pomelo peel-derived biochar supported RuWCu catalyst was synthesized for the production of 1,2-propanediol from fructose hydrodeoxygenation.
Efficient hydrothermal conversion of cellulose into methane over porous Ni catalyst

Abstract:An efficient conversion of cellulose to CH4 over porous Ni catalyst under hydrothermal conditions has been investigated. The results indicated that porous Ni catalyst showed significant catalytic activity and selectivity for the cellulose conversion to methane. Porous Ni catalyst still remained good activity with gaseous hydrogen after three runs for the transformation. The maximum CH4 yield of 73.8% from cellulose was achieved in the presence of Zn as a reductant over porous Ni at 325°C for 2h. This value obtained is the highest yield for the formation of CH4 from cellulose to date. The mechanistic studies for this transformation proposed three possible pathways for the formation of CH4 from cellulose: (1) pyrolysis, (2) hydrogenation of intermediates, and (3) methanation. The present work provides an environmentally benign and efficient route for the conversion of cellulose to CH4 with high efficiency and high selectivity and has great significance for both academia and industry.

Abstract:Cellulosic ethanol produced from lignocellulose biomass can alleviate the shortage of conventional fossil energy supply and reduce global CO2 emissions. Wherein, hydrogenolysis of cellulose to ethanol is a new method for the synthesis of fuel ethanol, which could theoretically utilizes all carbon atoms in glucose in the direct retro-aldol condensation (RAC) reaction to produce ethanol, and can potentially break through the technical bottleneck of biological methods. Herein, we show that the benefits of the mesoporous structure of tungsten-based catalysts can be leveraged to influence the selective hydrogenolysis of cellulose into C2 products. Comparing the performance of different pore size SiO2 supported tungsten catalysts and detailed characterizations revealed that the mesoporous structure of supports can affect the morphology, crystal sizes, and surface chemistry of the catalysts, which presented a combined effect on the hydrogenolysis reaction. Whereby, 51.5 wt% ethylene glycol (EG) was obtained from the direct hydrogenolysis of cellulose over Ru-WOx/SiO2 (500 Ȧ) catalyst under 513 K, and 40.5 wt% ethanol (EtOH) was obtained from the direct hydrogenolysis of cellulose over Ir-WOx/SiO2 (500 Ȧ) catalyst under 553 K, respectively.

Abstract:Tungsten-based catalysts, including crystalline WO3 and H2WO4, have been reported to be efficient for the selective cleavage of C−C bonds of sugar intermediates involved in the conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol and propylene glycol in combination with hydrogenation catalysts under H2 atmosphere. However, there is still not a consensus on the actual states of these catalysts during the reaction. Herein, we demonstrate that both WO3 and H2WO4 tended to undergo reduction to hydrogen tungsten bronze (HxWO3) species in the cellulose reaction, consisting of H0.23WO3 and H0.33WO3, which were then re-oxidized to WO3 upon exposure to ambient air after the reaction. Both WO3 and HxWO3 were insoluble in water and acted as the heterogeneous catalysts in the cellulose reaction, as further validated by the strong dependence of the catalytic activity of WO3 on its crystallite size and surface area. Such identification of the heterogeneous HxWO3 species, albeit exemplified here only from the in situ reduction of WO3 and H2WO4 in the cellulose reaction, unravels the active state of the tungsten-based catalysts under reductive reaction conditions.

Abstract:Direct converting Kraft lignin into valuable chemicals by catalytic hydrogenolysis is a promising method to develop biomass valorization. In our research, the multifunctional porous carbon material catalyst was prepared for lignin depolymerization reaction. Through the introduction of ammonium oxalate as both foaming agent and nitrogen source increased the carbon materials surface area (608.74 m2/g), which improved the stability and dispersion of Ru and WOx nanoparticles. Based on the catalyst characterization and liquid product composition analysis, the lignin could quickly achieve hydrodeoxygenation process over the connected multi-stage pore structure assisted with Ru metal center and WOx oxophilic sites. Especially, the 96.89 wt% bio-oil yield, 36.85 wt% monomer yield and 20.85 wt% arenes yield were achieved over a porous 5Ru/30WOx/N-C catalyst. Under the optimal reaction condition, the higher heating values of bio-oil could increase to 35.68 MJ/kg. This research provided a new method for catalyst design towards highly efficient and selective hydrogenolysis of lignin to useful aromatic chemicals.

Abstract:A controlled, weakly basic Co/CeOx catalyst was designed for one-pot conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,2-propylene glycol (1,2-PG) to achieve near-equivalent yield. Abstract:The reaction pathway and kinetics of cellulose hydrogenolysis to ethylene glycol (EG) catalyzed by nickel and tungsten combined with copper supported on magnesium aluminum spinel (NiOx-WOy-Cu/MgAl2O4) were studied. Cellulose was hydrolyzed to glucose, which followed either the retro-aldol condensation to glycolaldehyde and erythrose or isomerized to fructose followed by retro-aldol reaction to dihydroxyacetone and glyceraldehydes. The derived glucose can also be hydrogenated to sorbitol. The intermediate products were subsequently converted to EG, erythritol, glycerol and 1,2-propanediol. The cellulose conversion, yields of EG and C2,3 polyols were achieved 100, 53.1 and 62.7%, respectively. The simplified kinetic models were proposed and validated with the experimental results, indicating that the simpler first-order model could perfectly describe the hydrogenolysis of cellulose in the catalytic system. Hydrolysis of cellulose was demonstrated as the rate determining step independent of the reaction pathway, and high temperatures were favorable to the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose. Activation energies results showed that high temperatures were favorable to the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose.

Efficient one-pot transformation of furfural to pentanediol over Cu-modified cobalt-based catalysts

Abstract:Pentanediols are substances with significant market potential as the key monomers for advanced polymeric materials. In this study, we successfully achieved directly hydrogenolysis of biomass-based furfural to 1,5-pentanediol with a remarkable yield of 53.4 % using Cu-modified cobalt supported on cerium dioxide catalysts. Through comprehensive characterization techniques, including H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, EPR and Raman analysis, the study revealed that the introduction of Cu altered the dispersion of Co species, attenuated the interaction between Co species and cerium dioxide, enhanced its reduction extent, and fostered the formation of plentiful cobalt oxide species and oxygen vacancies on the catalyst's surface. The cooperative influence of Cu and Co heightened the selectivity of the hydrogenolysis reaction. This work provides a novel strategy for the development of greener and more efficient catalytic processes based on non-precious metals that for the selective conversion of biomass-derived furfural to high-value pentanediols.
