Abstract:In this study, lead ion was combined with water glass to separate scheelite from calcite using flotation. The effects and underlying mechanisms of the liquid and solid phases generated in this combined depressant (Pb-water glass, a mixture of lead ion and water glass) on the flotation performance of scheelite and calcite were investigated through micro-flotation experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer measurements, fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis, zeta potential measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests. The flotation results indicate that the selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite results from the liquid phase, not the solid phase. The XRD and FTIR results indicate that under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass, the solid phases are the leadsilicate with amorphous structures, while the UV-Vis results reveal significant absorption differences in the liquid phases under different mass ratios of lead ion to water glass. The zeta potential and XPS results indicate that less metal silicate polymers are adsorbed on the scheelite surface than on the calcite surface, allowing NaOL to be adsorbed on the scheelite surface, but not on the calcite surface, and selective flotation separation of scheelite from calcite is therefore achieved. XPS results further reveal that the metal silicate polymers in the liquid phase are adsorbed on both mineral surfaces by firstly breaking the Ca-O group and then reacting with the Ca active sites.
Flotation Separation of Smithsonite from Calcite Using 2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic Acid As a Depressant

Abstract:In this study, 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA) was introduced as a depressant for the flotation separation of apatite from calcite. The micro-flotation test results showed that good floatability of both apatite and calcite were obtained at around pH 8.5 when using sodium oleate (NaOl) as collector. Mixed minerals flotation test results showed that an efficient separation of apatite from calcite was achieved using PBTCA as depressant, which presented a selective depression for the calcite. Zeta potential measurements indicated that the addition of PBTCA prior to NaOl did not interfere the interaction between NaOl and apatite while it decreased NaOl adsorption on calcite surface.

Abstract:Desulfurization of high sulfur bauxite is an important issue in Bayer alumina production. In this study, by using two anionic sulphydryl collectors (HX, HD) as mixed collectors (PYDH), the selectivity of flotation separation between pyrite and diaspore was improved, thereby reducing the sulfur content of high sulfur bauxite and ultimately meeting the production requirements of Bayer alumina. The findings showed that under the optimized conditions of 500 g/Mg collector, 150 g/Mg inhibitor, 200 g/Mg activator, 100 g/Mg foaming agent, and a slurry pH of 9, the sulfur content of bauxite can be reduced from 3.35% to 0.33% through one rough selection, one fine selection, and one scavenging flotation. Moreover, the interaction mechanism between mixed collectors and pyrite was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Zeta potential analysis, and contact angle testing. SEM-EDS research confirmed that PYDH adsorbed on the surface of pyrite. The contact angle measurement analysis showed that compared to individual collectors, pretreated pyrite with mixed collectors had better hydrophobicity. Zeta potential, FTIR, and XPS results indicated that PYDH selectively adsorbed pyrite through chemical adsorption. The mixed collector PYDH is an effective collector for pyrite in high sulfur bauxite flotation desulfurization.

Abstract:At present, it is still a difficulty to separate chalcopyrite from pyrite due to the similar electrochemical properties of the two minerals, which would dilute the grade of copper concentrates and affect the follow process. In this paper, polypropylene carboxylic acid (PCA) was used as an environmentally friendly depressant to efficiently separate pyrite from chalcopyrite, and the separation performance was evaluated by micro-flotation experiments. The results of the flotation experiments showed that PCA could selectively depress the flotation of pyrite rather than that of chalcopyrite when using SBX as the collector, and the optimum separation performance was realized at the reagent scheme of 60 mg/L PCA and 15 mg/L SBX when pH was 8.16. Meanwhile, the selective depression mechanism of PCA on the two minerals was also investigated via a series of surface analyses. The analyzed results indicated that PCA could be chemisorbed on pyrite surface via the Fe sites and impede the further adsorption of SBX, which would intensively enhance the hydrophilicity of pyrite and make it sink into the tailing products even in the presence of SBX. However, the adsorption of PCA on chalcopyrite surface was very weak and SBX could still be chemisorbed on chalcopyrite surface even the chalcopyrite was pre-conditioned with PCA. Therefore, PCA could be selected as the potential depressant for the efficient separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite.

Abstract:Lowering lime consumption in froth flotation is one of the important aspects for carbon emission reduction. Herein, 6-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine-2(1H)-thione-4-thiol sodium (BN) was pioneeringly designed as a high-selective collector for copper sulfide flotation. The micro-flotation findings indicated that BN realized an effective separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite under pH ∼ 8.0. The further mechanism investigations through adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics, density functional theory (DFT) calculation, FTIR, UV and XPS suggested that BN self-assembled on chalcopyrite to generate the surface Cu-BN complexes where the CuS bonds were formed. Meanwhile, BN's butyl group oriented outward for attaching bubbles to improve the floatability of chalcopyrite. In comparison to isobutyl xanthate anion (IBX − ), BN anion (BN − ) possesses the big conjugated configuration of amino-triazine dithiol group and strong electron delocalization ability. Moreover, BN − exhibited the stronger electron-accepting and weaker electron-donating ability than IBX − , which made BN − exhibit a strong affinity towards Cu(I)/Cu(II) atom(s) on chalcopyrite surface and weak interaction to Fe(II)/Fe(III) atom(s) on pyrite surface. Therefore, the pH for flotation separation of chalcopyrite against pyrite with BN was much lower than that with sodium isobutyl xanthate, reducing lime consumption and carbon emission.

Abstract:The surface properties of fluorite and barite are similar, which results in agent action behaviour that is also similar. it is essential to use a highly selective agent in order to achieve effective separation of the two minerals. In this study, an environmentally friendly surfactant, caprylhydroxamic acid (CHA), was found as an effective collector for flotation separation of fluorite and barite. The results of microflotation experiments show that CHA can achieve effective separation of fluorite and barite with excellent selectivity without the addition of depressants. FT-IR, contact angle measurement, XPS, SEM-EDS measurement and AFM measurement results indicated that the interaction between CHA and fluorite was strong, whereas the adsorption of CHA on barite was weak. CHA is chemically acted on the surface of fluorite mainly through the Ca-O bond. DFT calculations show that the adsorption model of CHA on fluorite surface has lower adsorption energy compared to the adsorption model on barite surface. In the fluorite adsorption model, the electron density surrounding the O atoms is higher, indicating that the CHA adsorption effect is more obvious.

Abstract:Sphalerite flotation is conducted under Cu2+ activation system, whereas the selective separation of pyrrhotite is difficult due to the inevitable activation effect of Cu2+, which requires a large amount of lime to depress pyrrhotite flotation. In this study, the conventional collector butyl xanthate and a novel collector ML8 were compared to the selectivity of the flotation separation of sphalerite and pyrrhotite. The ML8 was investigated as an effective sphalerite collector to achieve the lime-free separation of sphalerite and pyrrhotite. Single mineral flotation indicated that sphalerite exhibited good floatability under low-alkaline conditions, whereas pyrrhotite was almost non-floatable, and their selective separation could be achieved using a low dosage of ML8. Mixed mineral flotation further confirmed that the ZnS separation could be achieved under low-alkaline conditions (pH = 9) using ML8 as a sphalerite collector. Reagents adsorption measurements demonstrated that ML8 possessed greater affinity to sphalerite than pyrrhotite, thus the contact angle of sphalerite increased from 51° to 76° after treatment with ML8 while that of pyrrhotite only increased from 67° to 70°. XPS detection results illustrated that the adsorption sites of ML8 on sphalerite were the adsorbed Cu site on the mineral surface rather than the Zn site of sphalerite crystal. The amount of Cu sites located on sphalerite was much greater than on pyrrhotite after the activation with copper sulfate.

Abstract:Despite that the negative effects of lizardite on pentlandite flotation have been realized, the lizardite effects under different slurry pH have not been sufficiently investigated. Micro-flotation test results showed that pentlandite recovery gradually decreased with the increase in slurry pH when lizardite slime existed. Both electro-kinetic tests and turbidity measurements indicated that hetero-coagulation between the pentlandite and lizardite particles occurred in the entire pH range, which failed to explain the lower recovery at high slurry pH. Zeta potential distribution measurements and sedimentation tests suggested that self-coagulation among lizardite particles occurred at higher pH, which increased the amount of lizardite slime coated on the pentlandite surfaces and thus reducing collector adsorption and flotation recovery. The particle interaction in the pentlandite/lizardite flotation system was investigated using DLVO theory and microscope observation. The findings of the study will contribute to the improvement in pentlandite flotation by regulating the particle interactions.

Abstract:Cassiterite is the most purist tin-containing mineral and plays a dominative role in the tin resources. Owing to the limited selectivity of conventional collectors, the efficient separation of cassiterite from fluorite is normally difficult. Herein, 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA) was employed as an eco-friendly depressant to selectively depress the flotation of fluorite. The flotation experiments were conducted to evaluate the separation efficiency of the two minerals, and the results showed that cassiterite and fluorite could be efficiently separated at the flotation reagent scheme of 15 mg/L PBTCA and 20 mg/L NaOL when pH was 8.04. Furthermore, a series of detection and simulation technologies including wettability analysis, zeta potential measurement, FTIR analysis, XPS analysis and DFT calculation were performed to uncover the underlying adsorption and depression mechanism of PBTCA on cassiterite and fluorite. These further analyses indicated that PBTCA could be chemisorbed on the fluorite surface through the interaction between the phosphate group in PBTCA and the calcium sites in fluorite. Moreover, the adsorption of PBTCA on fluorite surface would intensively inhibit the adsorption of NaOL. However, PBTCA was only weakly adsorbed on the cassiterite surface and could not affect the interaction between NaOL and cassiterite. Finally, a most likely adsorption model of PBTCA onto fluorite surface with the “mono-polar group” interaction was proposed by DFT calculations.

Abstract:The flotation separation of magnesite from calcite under Pb-BHA collector system is difficult due to the same action site of CO32– anion. Surface transformation of fluorite particles present great selectivity for different calcium containing minerals, which is due to the selective adsorption of slowly-released fluoride ions (F-). The application of surface transformation and Pb-BHA collectors can achieve the efficient separation of magnesite and calcite. This study suggests that the floatability of magnesite is similar to that of calcite without any depressant, and the presence of fluorite triggers a selectively inhibiting action on calcite but not on magnesite. Zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate that slowly-released F- from fluorite particles strongly is chemisorbed on the surface of calcite instead of magnesite, and the adsorbed F- react with Ca2+ on the calcite surface to generate CaF2. Atomic force microscopy measurement confirms that a CaF2 films is formed to change the surface morphology of calcite and increase the surface roughness. Furthermore, the slow release of fluorite particles can precisely control the adsorption and the surface transformation of F- on calcite, instead on magnesite. Therefore, the slow release and surface transformation of fluorite particles plays an important role in the flotation separation of carbonate minerals.

The Influence of Sulphide Tailing Water on the Flotation Performance of Pyrite

Abstract:This paper investigated the influence of sulphide tailing recycling water of Huize lead zinc mine on the flotation performance of pyrite.Then taking butyl xanthate and diethyl dithiocarbamate as the collector,the differences of floatability of pyrite in tailing water and deionized water were researched.In the condition of taking butyl xanthate and diethyl dithiocarbamate as the collector in deionized water,we zinc sulfate,cupric sulfate and sodium silicate are respectively added as modifiers to influence the floatability of pyrite.The result showed that some special elements in tailing water play a great inhibitory action on floatability of pyrite.Directly recycling tailing water would cause adverse effect on pyrite flotation.Butyl xanthate and diethyl dithiocarbamate have good collecting ability to pyrite,and the modifiers of zinc sulfate,cupric sulfate and sodium silicate influence the floatability of pyrite differently in condition of various collectors.

Abstract:Xanthate, due to its superior collecting ability, is widely used in the field of minerals flotation. However, its weak selectivity and foul odor make it difficult to separate chalcopyrite from pyrite and reduce pollution. This work provides an efficient and odorless collector to selectively separate chalcopyrite from pyrite. Amide group was introduced into xanthate and an efficient and odorless xanthate derivative was designed, potassium O-(6-(butylamino)-6-oxohexyl) xanthate (PBAHX), to selectively separate chalcopyrite and pyrite. The flotation results showed that PBAHX exhibited superior selectivity, the separation index of PBAHX for chalcopyrite and pyrite is 2.65 while that of the traditional sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) is 1.29, and enabled the separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite. The electronic-nose detection demonstrated that the odor intensity of PBAHX was lower than SIBX. Subsequently, "horizontal" adsorption model was formed for the adsorption of PBAHX on pyrite to explain the differences in flotation results. Besides, hydrogen bonds may be produced between collector molecules to dampen odor. PBAHX shows potential as a green and effective alternative to sulfide mineral flotation.

Abstract:The surface characteristics of fluorite and calcite exhibit a close analogy, posing a formidable challenge to flotation separation. Hence, the development of a highly efficient reagent for fluorite holds paramount significance and value in addressing the challenging separation of fluorite and calcium-bearing minerals. In this study, a novel collector, decyl-bishydroxamic acid (DCBHA), has been ingeniously designed and synthesized to effectively separate fluorite and calcite. Conducting micro-flotation experiments encompassing single minerals and artificially mixed minerals, we systematically investigate the flotation performance of DCBHA in fluorite flotation systems. It was observed that DCBHA exhibited commendable collective and selective ability compared to BHA and OHA, yielded a concentrate grade of up to 70.99% with a recovery of 76.24%. at optimal conditions. The zeta potential, AFM, FTIR and XPS examinations indicated the selective chemical adsorption of DCBHA on the metallic sites of the fluorite surface. The incorporation of a second hydroxamic acid group concurrently enhanced the collecting capacity and selectivity of the reagent. The mechanism of interaction between the novel collector DCBHA and mineral surfaces was investigated through Density Functional Theory (DFT), revealing that DCBHA exhibited a "bidentate" adsorption pattern upon losing a proton H, forming bonds with the mineral surface. Furthermore, the adsorption affinity of DCBHA to fluorite surpassed that to calcite, providing advantageous support for experimental findings.

Abstract:Desulfurization is a critical problem in the efficient exploitation of high-sulfur bauxite resources. This study synthesized a novel thioether-containing hydroxamic acid (2-BTHA) by click-esterification-hydroxylamine oximation for flotation separation of pyrite from diaspore. DFT calculations indicated the functional groups of 2-BTHA were hydroxamate and thioether groups. Flotation results demonstrated 2-BTHA can effectively separate pyrite from diaspore under weak acidic conditions without adding vulcanizing agent. The UV-absorbance and surface energy tests explained introducing a thioether group improved the adsorption of Fe2+ on the collector, thus reducing its surface energy, hydrophilic index and free energy of bubble-mineral interaction, conducive to selective flotation. Zeta potential, infrared spectrum analyses and XPS further proved 2-BTHA could chemically adsorb on pyrite rather than on diaspore. It mainly reacted with pyrite surface Fe to form Fe-S bonds and five-membered hydroxamate-(O, O)-Fe rings. This research provides a potential multi-functional collector for green and efficient utilization of high-sulfur bauxite.

Abstract:The selective adsorption of surfactants on minerals can strengthen the differences of physical and chemical properties of mineral surfaces, thereby improving the separation efficiency of the refractory minerals. Herein, a novel surfactant S-carboxyethyl-N-benzoyl thiocarbamate (CEBTB) was prepared and utilized as a collector to selective separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite. The adsorption performances and mechanism of CEBTB on chalcopyrite and pyrite surface were studied. It showed that the functional groups (CO, CS and –COOH) of CEBTB could selectively anchor on the chalcopyrite surface and increase its surface hydrophobicity, whereas the adsorption of CEBTB on pyrite surface was weak with the surface hydrophobicity improved insignificantly. Flotation experimental indicated that CEBTB exhibited superior flotation selectivity for chalcopyrite against pyrite than the common collector of SIBX. Batch adsorption experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption of CEBTB onto chalcopyrite surface was performed by a monolayer chemisorption, as well as the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous.

Abstract:At present, traditional inhibitors applied for selective flotation of fluorapatite from dolomite generally own low selectivity, high toxicity, large dosages and high costs. Thus, this research offers a novel non-toxic and eco-friendly dolomite depressant, 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA), for selective flotation of fluorapatite with sodium oleate (NaOL) as a collector. The selectively depressing effect and adsorption mechanism of PBTCA in the selective flotation of fluorapatite from dolomite were investigated via a series of experiments and analyses. The results from zeta potential and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the chemisorption of PBTCA onto dolomite was much stronger than fluorapatite. Crystal chemistry calculation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further confirmed that large amounts of Mg sites only exposed on the dolomite surface mainly accounted for the selective adsorption of PBTCA onto dolomite due to the strong affinity to PBTCA. Moreover, the chemisorption of NaOL onto fluorapatite was hardly affected by the pre-addition of PBTCA, whereas the intensive chemisorption of PBTCA prevented the adsorption of NaOL onto dolomite. As a result, in the presence of PBTCA, dolomite exhibited a poor flotation performance while there was good floatability for fluorapatite, which benefited the efficient recovery of fluorapatite from dolomite by froth flotation.

Abstract:Rhodochrosite and calcite have similar physicochemical characteristics and floatability, making it difficult for conventional flotation collectors to effectively separate the two minerals. In this paper, a novel 3-tetradecylamine propyl amidoxime (TPA) collector with selective and excellent collection capability for rhodochrosite has been investigated. The micro-flotation experiments showed that the flotation performance of TPA is superior to that of the commonly used sodium oleate (NaOL) collector, and the separation of rhodochrosite and calcite can be achieved under neutral conditions. At a slurry pH of 7 and a dosage of 2.0×10 -4 mol/L, TPA provided a recovery of 88.5% for rhodochrosite and only 15.0% for calcite. The mechanism of interaction between TPA and minerals was examined by contact angle, Zeta potential tests and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, which indicated that TPA selectively adsorbed on the surface of rhodochrosite rather than calcite. Finally, the adsorption behavior of TPA molecules on the surface of rhodochrosite was confirmed by Density functional theory (DFT) calculation to be through electrostatic interaction. This paper provides a novel collector for the flotation separation of rhodochrosite from calcite with excellent collecting ability and selectivity, which is significant for the efficient utilization of manganese ore resources.

Microscopic Perspective of the Combined Collector CTAB/SPA on the Flotation Separation of Fluorite and Calcite: Adsorption Morphology and Interaction Force

Abstract:It is difficult to separate fluorite and calcite due to their similar surface properties. This article applied combined collector cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) to separate fluorite from calcite and explored the adsorption morphology and interaction force. Flotation results indicated that effective separation between fluorite and calcite with CTAB/SPA at a molar ratio of 1:1, at the concentration of 1×10−4 mol/L and pH 11.0. Surface tension measurements indicated a synergistic effect of CTAB/SPA in solution. The combined collector increased the hydrophobicity difference between fluorite and calcite surfaces. Zeta potential measurements illustrated that both CTAB and SPA adsorbed on fluorite and calcite surfaces, with CTAB as the main collector. Atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis further demonstrated that more CTAB/SPA adsorbed on fluorite surface than that on the calcite surface, resulting in a stronger hydrophobic force between fluorite particles. It was concluded that CTAB, as the main collector in the combined collector, adsorbed on the fluorite surface, while SPA interspersed between the CTAB molecules, with an adsorption model proposed. These macroscopic and microscopic points provide a possibility for the flotation separation between fluorite and calcite.
Selective depression mechanism of polyaspartic acid and calcium oxide on arsenopyrite after copper ions activation and its effect on flotation separation performance

Abstract:The arsenopyrite activated by copper ions have similar flotation properties to chalcopyrite. Polyaspartic acid (PASP) and calcium oxide (CaO) using as combination depressants for the selective separation of copper-activated arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite were carried out by micro-flotation experiments, contact angle measurements, surface adsorption capacity tests, zeta potential measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) tests and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analyses, and its depression mechanism was investigated. The results of flotation experiments showed that the recovery of arsenopyrite after addition of the depressants reached only 7.80 %, while the recovery of chalcopyrite reached 94.02 %. The results of contact angles, adsorption capacity tests and zeta potential measurements showed that the PASP-CaO can selectively enhance the hydrophilicity of arsenopyrite surface, but has little effect on the chalcopyrite. XPS analyses and ICP-OES tests further verified that the depressants first eliminated the activation of copper ions and then selectively adsorbed on the surface of arsenopyrite. ToF-SIMS analyses showed that the PASP-CaO would achieve selective depression of arsenopyrite in the form of PASP, PASP-Ca complexes and Ca(OH) + , respectively. Finally, the mechanism diagram of PASP-CaO selectively depressing arsenopyrite was derived. These results will provide an excellent theoretical reference for the flotation separation of copper arsenic sulfide ore.

Abstract:Chalcopyrite and molybdenite are the primary minerals from which copper and molybdenum are extracted. However, the separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite is restricted because of their inherent floatability. This study explores the separation effects of the addition of a green depressant, pyrogallic acid (PA), on chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The feasibility of flotation separation was verified by flotations tests with chalcopyrite and molybdenite under weak acid conditions at pH 6. The zeta potential and total organic carbon (TOC) illustrated that PA could have strong chemical adsorption on the surface of chalcopyrite and weak adsorption on the surface of molybdenite. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy illustrated that PA had a strong redox reaction at the surface of chalcopyrite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results illustrated that the reaction occurred through the generation of Cu/Fe-OH complexes covered on the chalcopyrite surface to reduce the active adsorption sites, which led to a decrease in the collection capacity for chalcopyrite. Moreover, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) results showed that the Cu and Fe sites on the surface of chalcopyrite were oxidized by PA. The intensities of FeOH − and CuOH − were found to be enhanced in the fragmentation peaks. Accordingly, a new selective adsorption model of PA on chalcopyrite and molybdenite was proposed.
