Abstract:Graphene attracts more and more scientists and researchers owing to its superior electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. For material scientists, graphene is a kind of versatile building blocks, and considerable progress has been made in recent years. Graphene-based hybrid materials have been prepared by incorporating inorganic species and/or cross-linking of organic species through covalent and/or noncovalent interactions. The graphene-based hybrid materials show improved or excellent performance in various fields. In this review, we summarize the synthesis of graphene and graphene-based hybrid materials, and their applications in energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:With superior electrical/thermal conductivities and mechanical properties, two dimensional (2D) graphene has become one of the most intensively explored carbon allotropes in materials science. To exploit the inherent properties fully, 2D graphene sheets are often fabricated or assembled into functional architectures (e.g. hydrogels, aerogels) with desired three dimensional (3D) interconnected porous microstructures. The 3D graphene based materials show many excellent characteristics including increased active material per projected area, accessible mass transport or storage, electro/thermo conductivity, chemical/electrochemical stability and flexibility. It has paved the way for practical requirements in electronics, adsorption as well as catalysis related system. This review shows an extensive overview of the main principles and the recent synthetic technologies about fabricating various innovative 3D graphene based materials. Subsequently, recent progresses in electrochemical energy devices (lithium/lithium ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and solar cells) and hydrogen energy generation/storage are explicitly discussed. The up to date advances for pollutants detection and environmental remediation are also reviewed. Finally, challenges and outlooks in materials development for energy and environment are suggested.

Abstract:Graphene is an ideal 2D material system bridging electronic and photonic devices. It also breaks the fundamental speed and size limits by electronics and photonics, respectively. Graphene offers multiple functions of signal transmission, emission, modulation, and detection in a broad band, high speed, compact size, and low loss. Here, we have a brief view of graphene based functional devices at microwave, terahertz, and optical frequencies. Their fundamental physics and computational models were discussed as well.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted considerable attention due to its unique two-dimensional structure, high electronic mobility, exceptional thermal conductivity, excellent optical transmittance, good mechanical strength, and ultrahigh surface area. To meet the ever increasing demand for portable electronic products, electric vehicles, smart grids, and renewable energy integrations, hybridizing graphene with various functions and components has been demonstrated to be a versatile and powerful strategy to significantly enhance the performance of various energy storage systems such as lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors and beyond, because such hybridization can result in synergistic effects that combine the best merits of involved components and confer new functions and properties, thereby improving the charge/discharge efficiencies and capabilities, energy/power densities, and cycle life of these energy storage systems. This review will focus on diverse graphene hybridization principles and strategies for energy storage applications, and the proposed outline is as follows. First, graphene and its fundamental properties, followed by graphene hybrids and related hybridization motivation, are introduced. Second, the developed hybridization formulas of using graphene for lithium-ion batteries are systematically categorized from the viewpoint of material structure design, bulk electrode construction, and material/electrode collaborative engineering; the latest representative progress on anodes and cathodes of lithium-ion batteries will be reviewed following such classifications. Third, similar hybridization formulas for graphene-based supercapacitor electrodes will be summarized and discussed as well. Fourth, the recently emerging hybridization formulas for other graphene-based energy storage devices will be briefed in combination with typical examples. Finally, future prospects and directions on the exploration of graphene hybridization toward the design and construction of viable, high-class, and even newly-featured (e.g., flexible) energy storage materials, electrodes, and systems will be presented.

Abstract:The hybridization of 2D nanomaterials with 3D graphene architectures has offered a promising strategy to prepare high‐performance hybrid materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. This review summarizes the typical methods to hybridize 2D nanomaterials with 3D graphene architectures, as well as their application in rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and electrocatalytic water splitting.Since the discovery of graphene, diverse kinds of 2D nanomaterials have been explored and exhibited great promise for application in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. However, the restacking of 2D nanomaterials severely reduces their exposed active sites and thus impairs their electrochemical performance. Moreover, except for graphene, a large number of 2D nanomaterials normally possess unsatisfactory electrical conductivity. One of the effective strategies to address the aforementioned shortcomings is to hybridize 2D nanomaterials with 3D graphene architectures since large specific surface area and rapid transport pathways for electrons, ions, and mass can be achieved in the obtained hybrid materials. This review summarizes the typical strategies to hybridize 2D nanomaterials with 3D graphene architectures and then highlights the application of these hybrid materials in rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and electrocatalytic water splitting. The challenges and future research directions in this research area are also discussed.

Abstract:State-of-the-art energy storage devices are capable of delivering reasonably high energy density (lithium ion batteries) or high power density (supercapacitors). There is an increasing need for these power sources with not only superior electrochemical performance, but also exceptional flexibility. Graphene has come on to the scene and advancements are being made in integration of various electrochemically active compounds onto graphene or its derivatives so as to utilize their flexibility. Many innovative synthesis techniques have led to novel graphene-based hybrid two-dimensional nanostructures. Here, the chemically integrated inorganic-graphene hybrid two-dimensional materials and their applications for energy storage devices are examined. First, the synthesis and characterization of different kinds of inorganic-graphene hybrid nanostructures are summarized, and then the most relevant applications of inorganic-graphene hybrid materials in flexible energy storage devices are reviewed. The general design rules of using graphene-based hybrid 2D materials for energy storage devices and their current limitations and future potential to advance energy storage technologies are also discussed.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based composites have drawn increasing attention for energy applications due to their unique structures and properties. By combining the merits of 3D graphene (3DG), e.g., a porous and interconnected network, a high electrical conductivity, a large accessible surface area, and excellent mechanical strength and thermal stability, with the high chemical/electrochemical activities of active materials, 3DG-based composites show great promise as high-performance electrode materials in various energy devices. This article reviews recent progress in 3DG-based composites and their applications in energy storage/conversion devices, i.e., supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, dye-sensitized solar cells, and fuel cells.

Abstract:The successful isolation of single‐layer graphene sheet has led to tremendous progress in the discovery of new 2D materials including boron nitride, silicene, mxene, phosphorene, and transition metal dichalcogenides. However, the practical applications based on one simple 2D material are still at very early stage. Interfacing electrically and optically active graphene with other 2D materials or crystalline substrate will form a van der Waals heterostructured nanohybrid, which is attracting growing research interest across the disciplines of physics, chemistry, and material science. Such delicate heterostructures can combine the electronic functionality from each individual 2D material, holding great promise for applications in nanoscale electronics and sustainable energy. Computational exploration of electronic functionality in 2D graphene‐based van der Waals heterostructures can offer great theoretical insights and design principle that may prove profitable for experimental synthesis and device fabrications. In this review, we highlight recent progress on modeling graphene‐based van der Waals nanohybrids using density functional theory‐based approach. Particular emphasis will be given on the design of van der Waals heterostructured nanohybrids to modulate stability, stacking geometry, band gap, quantum spin Hall effect, electrical conductivity, optical/friction properties, chemical reactivity, Schottky barrier, carbon dioxide capture, etc. We also comment on the challenges that need to be overcome and outline some interesting research opportunities for future computational exploration of electronic functionality in 2D van der Waals heterostructures. Abstract:Graphene-based materials have shown great potential in various fields across physics, chemistry, biology, and electronics, due to their unique electronic properties, facile synthesis, and ease of functionalization. In this review, we summarize the significant advances in tailored graphene systems for the recently developed unconventional energy conversion and storage devices reported by our group and others, namely focused on their tunable and controllable preparation and remarkable applications in new types of supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, photovoltaic cells, and other emerging generators. This featured article also highlights the working principles and outlines the problems hindering the practical applications of graphene-based materials in these energy-related devices. Future research trends towards new methodologies in the design and synthesis of graphene-based systems with unique properties for emerging energy storage and energy conversion devices are also proposed.

Abstract:The family of carbon allotropes such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene, with their rich chemical and physical characteristics, has attracted intense attentions in the field of nanotechnology and enabled a number of disruptive devices and applications in electronics, optoelectronics and energy storage. Just as no individual 2D (two-dimensional) material can meet all technological requirements of various applications, combining carbon materials of different dimensionality into a hybrid form is a promising strategy to optimize properties and to build novel devices operating with new principles. In particular, the direct synthesis of 2D or 3D (three-dimensional) sp2-hybridized all-carbon hybrids based on merging CNTs and graphene affords a great promise for future electronic, optoelectronic and energy storages. Here, we review the progress of all-carbon hybrids-based devices, covering material preparation, fabrication techniques as well as applied devices. Recent progress about large-scale synthesis and assembly techniques is highlighted, and with many intrinsic advantages, the all-carbon strategy opens up a highly promising approach to obtain high-performance integrated circuits. Moreover, this review will discuss the remaining challenges in the field and provide perspectives on future applications.

Abstract:Graphene and other two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have attracted intensive interest for use in energy storage and conversion systems because of their unique structure and remarkable properties. Although significant progress has been made in this field, certain intrinsic limitations obstruct the achievement of desired properties. 2D heterostructures, upon stacking or stitching different 2DMs in well-defined sequences or patterns, could significantly entail drastic changes in their properties, and thereby synergistically combine the merits of individual 2DMs while eliminating their related drawbacks. Herein, we provide a topical review of recent advances in the preparation and characterization of 2D heterostructures for energy-related applications. Firstly, an introduction is given to the definition and importance of 2D heterostructures, followed by their typical categories of vertically stacked heterostructures and horizontal in-plane heterostructures reported so far. Secondly, the state-of-the-art synthesis approaches to fabricate 2D heterostructures, including mechanically aligned transfer, chemical vapor deposition, liquid exfoliation and self-assembly, and layer by layer self-assembly, are introduced in detail. Then, the current status of advanced characterization techniques like scanning probe-, electron-diffraction-, X-ray-, and spectroscopy-based techniques that are critical for the accurate identification of 2D heterostructures and understanding of the performance-enhancing mechanisms of devices is systemically summarized. Furthermore, recent applications of 2D heterostructures in energy storage (e.g., lithium/sodium ion batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, and micro-supercapacitors) and conversion (e.g., hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions and photocatalysis) are exemplified to highlight their positive synergistic effect. Finally, future challenges and prospective solutions that may direct the growth of 2D heterostructures and their energy-related applications are proposed.

Abstract:Based on the huge potential of graphene-based composites in electrical, thermal and mechanical applications, which have been widely used in electronics, energy storage and conversion, sensors and structural composites, the assembly and three-dimensional (3D) configuration of graphene nanosheets is an important routine to realize and even optimize its excellent properties. Considering the anisotropy of two-dimensional (2D) graphene and the accuracy of 3D architecture, 3D printing technology stands out in the preparation of periodic and diversified 3D graphene due to its efficient and controllable construction process. Moreover, the interconnected graphene conductive network and lightweight structural regulation can realize the integration of structure and function from low-dimensional to multidimensional. In these circumstances, the structural design and related functional applications of the printed graphene-based architecture are reviewed, and it is important to understand the inks properties, macro-microstructural regulation and corresponding application prospects. Besides, a summary and outlook is prepared in the last part, which points out the application difficulties and future development of 3D-printed graphene-based architecture.

Abstract:To meet the growing demand in energy, great efforts have been devoted to improving the performances of energy–storages. Graphene, a remarkable two-dimensional (2D) material, holds immense potential for improving energy–storage performance owing to its exceptional properties, such as a large-specific surface area, remarkable thermal conductivity, excellent mechanical strength, and high-electronic mobility. This review provides a comprehensive summary of recent research advancements in the application of graphene for energy–storage. Initially, the fundamental properties of graphene are introduced. Subsequently, the latest developments in graphene-based energy–storage, encompassing lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, potassium-ion batteries and aluminum-ion batteries, are summarized. Finally, the challenges associated with graphene-based energy–storage applications are discussed, and the development prospects for this field are outlined.

For these purposes, graphene materials usually have to be fabricated or assembled into desired micro-/nano-architectures for tuning and/or controlling their electrical, optical, mechanical, chemical or electrochemical properties. In this feature article, we review recent achievements in the studies of three-dimensional (3D) graphene architectures. The methodology for preparing these 3D graphene micro-/nano-architectures and their potential applications have been summarized.

Abstract:<p>Graphene is a single carbon layer of zero bandgap without edges and basal plane fluctuations. Engineering such infinite plane structure to finite size or appropriate structure will lead to different electronic structures, opening the bandgap of graphene and further achieving the target-specific applications. Multidisciplinary research efforts have been devoted to the development of diverse low-dimensional or hierarchical structures as well novel functionalities. To gain insights into the further development, this review comprehensively covers the recent progress of different graphene architectures categorized by dimensionality and their applications in electronics, biosciences, energy storage and conversion as well as environmental remediation. Although these materials are made of the same building block, they exhibit distinct properties and behaviors depending on how the carbon atoms in the graphene planar are bonded and on how the graphene sheets are functionalized to form larger structures. In order to highlight the structural characteristics of different dimensional graphene materials, this review independently starts with the properties of one kind of architecture, followed by various synthesis methods as well as potential applications. Finally, some insights and outlooks on the future directions and foreseeable challenges for graphene materials are also suggested as concluding remarks based on our own understanding.</p>

Abstract:Due to their unique properties, together with their ease of synthesis and functionalization, graphene-based materials have been showing great potential in energy storage and conversion. These hybrid structures display excellent material characteristics, including high carrier mobility, faster recombination rate and long-time stability. In this review, after a short introduction to graphene and its derivatives, we summarize the recent advances in the synthesis and applications of graphene and its derivatives in the fields of energy storage (lithium ion, lithium-air, lithium-sulphur batteries and supercapacitors) and conversion (oxygen reduction reaction for fuel cells). This article further highlights the working principles and problems hindering the practical applications of graphene-based materials in lithium batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells. Future research trends towards new methodologies to the design and the synthesis of graphene-based nanocomposite with unique architectures for electrochemical energy storage and conversion are also proposed.

This method offers good control of the number of graphene layers and porosity, as well as continuous connection of the graphene sheets. The review covers all the substrate types, catalysts, and precursors used to synthesize 3D graphene by the CVD method, as well as their most viable energy-related applications.

Abstract:As a single layer of graphite, graphene has been widely explored for its potential applications in many fields, such as electronics, energy storage, sensors, actuators, and composite materials. To achieve these purposes, assembling graphene nanosheets into macroscale bulk is indispensable. However, the prepared graphene materials at macroscale generally demonstrated a much lower performance in comparison to individual graphene nanosheets. Recently, great interest has been focused on the fabrication of graphene nanoarchitectonics, for the excellent properties of graphene at microscale are approaching at macroscale. During the fabrication process, four forms of driving forces are involved, including Van der Waals force, hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds as well as covalent bonds. In this feature article, we review the recent progress in 3D graphene architectures. This review highlights in materials’ properties rather than the morphology and processing methodology, as understanding the relationship between the assembly driving force and the performance of bulk materials. This review would be beneficial to the design of new graphene nanoarchitectonics and achieve graphene-based materials with high performance.
