Abstract:Ternary boron-carbon-nitrogen (B-C-N) compounds are considered to possess hardness comparable to diamond and thermal stability comparable to c-BN. Explorations for desirable B-C-N phases have been continuous. However, the nonconductive properties of most B-C-N compounds narrow the applications of these compounds. Herein, we propose a sp(2)-sp(3) hybridized phase of t-B2C3N2, which consists of diamond-like BC blocks connected with single N-N bonds. Elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves confirm that t-B2C3N2 is mechanically and dynamically stable. The structure processes 2D metallicity in a strong 3D network. Furthermore, hardness and electron-phonon calculations reveal that t-B2C3N2 is superhard and superconductive with a superconducting critical temperature reaching 2.3 K.
Superhard B28N32 with three-dimensional metallicity: First-principles prediction

Abstract:In this paper a sp 2-/sp 3-hybridized cubic N-rich BN phase dubbed as B28N32 is proposed by first-principles calculations. Structurally, B28N32 is constructed by B-N bonds with different lengths, which can be considered as sp 3-hybridized cubic BN blocks interlinked by sp 2-hybridized N atoms. Notably, B28N32 is energetically metastable at zero pressure, but the calculated formation enthalpies against to hBN and N2 become negative at pressures above 30 GPa, indicating the viability synthesize of this N-rich compound under pressure. The stabilities of B28N32 compound at zero pressure are confirmed by phonon dispersion spectrum and Born stability criteria. Electronic band structure, density of states and electron orbits calculations show the metallic feature of B28N32 is originate from 2p electrons of sp 2-hybridized N atoms, and form a unique 3D conductive network in the framework. The theoretical Vickers hardness of B28N32 estimated with two formulas is 55.3 and 40.8 GPa, respectively, which is supposed to superhard material. The proposed B28N32 enriched the B-N system in theoretically, promising in electronic devices.

Abstract:In this paper, a layer-like sp 2-/sp 3-hybridized orthorhombic phase of B3N5, named as oA-B3N5, is theoretically predicted to be stable at ambient pressure by first-principles calculations. The mechanical and dynamical stability has been confirmed by the elastic constants and phonon frequency curves calculations. The analyses of electronic properties show the metallicity of oA-B3N5 originates from the delocalized 2p electrons of sp 2-hybridized N atoms, forming several independent 1D conductive channels, giving the 1D metallicity in 3D framework. Furthermore, the incompressibility of oA-B3N5 exhibits highly anisotropic, and higher axial incompressibility along the N-N bonds direction comparing to the predicted semiconductor C2221-B3N5.

Abstract:Abstract We build random forests models to predict elastic properties and mechanical hardness of a compound, using only its chemical formula as input. The model training uses over 10,000 target compounds and 60 features based on stoichiometric attributes, elemental properties, orbital occupations, and ionic bonding levels. Using the models, we construct triangular graphs for B-C-N compounds to map out their bulk and shear moduli, as well as hardness values. The graphs indicate that a 1:1 B-N ratio can lead to various superhard compositions. We also validate the machine learning results by evolutionary structure prediction and density functional theory. Our study shows that BC 10 N, B 4 C 5 N 3 , and B 2 C 3 N exhibit dynamically stable phases with hardness values >40 GPa, which are superhard materials that potentially could be synthesized by low-temperature plasma methods.

Abstract:Carbon can be metal, semiconductor or insulator depending on its structures, and its conductivity can be one-dimensional (1D), 2D, and 3D correspondingly. Boron Nitride (BN) is isoelectronic to carbon, but one prominent difference between the two systems is their electronic properties. For many years, the synthesized and predicted BN allotropes were always insulators, irrespective of their structures. In this paper, with the help of structures searching based on first-principles calculations, a sp2/sp3-hybridized metallic monoclinic 3D BN (M-BN) structure is proposed. M-BN can be viewed as puckered hexagonal-BN (h-BN) layers bucked by partial sp(3) B-N bonds. The electronic property analysis revealed that the metallicity of M-BN is attributed to the delocalized 2p electrons of the sp(2) B and N atoms. The metallic B atoms and N atoms are aligns in two arrays along a 1D axial direction, resulting in the unusual 1D dual-threaded conduction in 3D M-BN structure. The enthalpy calculation have revealed that M-BN is the most energetically favorable structure among the predicted metallic BN structures so far, and it might be obtained via compressing layered h-BN precursor theoretically. Due to the 3D strong framework, M-BN has an estimated Vickers Hardness of 33.7 GPa, indicating it is a potential hard material with novel 1D conduction. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Structural and Electronic Properties of C-Bc2n Supper Hard Material: an Ab-Initio Study

Abstract:In this paper, first-principles calculations are performed to study the influence of atomic design on the structural and electronic properties of pseudo-cubic BC2N. The calculated results indicate that atomic structures and bond configurations have significant effects on the electronic properties. From band structure and total density of state, it is found that there exist five semiconductor configurations and two semi-metal configurations in pesudo-cubic BC2N. Within LDA approximation, the predicted band gaps vary from 0.7 eV to 2.6 eV for the five semiconductor configurations. A recently proposed band gap calculation method, termed Δ-sol method, is applied to correct the obtained energy band gaps, and the corrected range is from 2.9 eV to 4.4 eV. These results indicate that the band gap tuning in super hard materials can be implemented via atomic design.
Prediction of a Three-Dimensional Conductive Superhard Material: Diamond-like BC2

Abstract:A tetragonal BC2 (t-BC2) phase originating from the cubic diamond structure was predicted by first-principles calculations. The t-BC2 structure has a tetragonal lattice (space group I4(1)/amd, No. 141) and possesses the simple stacking sequence BC2BC2... along its c axis. The structural stability of the proposed t-BC2 was confirmed by calculations of the elastic constants and phonon frequencies. The electronic densities of states of t-BC2 show that all the B-C and C-C bonds in the crystal are metallic. Thus, t-BC2 possesses three-dimensional conductivity, which is different from the two-dimensional conductivity of the diamond-like t-BC3. The theoretical Vickers hardness of t-BC2 is 56.0 GPa, which is close to that of cubic boron nitride. The BIG ratio of t-BC2 is 1.09, which is larger than that of diamond (0.83), indicating that the t-BC2 phase is more ductile than diamond.
Prediction of superhard C 1+ x N 1− x compounds with metal-free magnetism and narrow band gaps

Abstract:The scarcity of superhard materials with magnetism or a narrow band gap, despite their potential applications in various fields, makes it desirable to design such materials. Here, a series of C 1+ x N 1− x compounds are theoretically designed by replacing different numbers of nitrogen atoms with carbon atoms in the synthesized C 1 N 1 compound. The results indicate that the compounds C 5 N 3 and C 7 N 1 possess both superhardness and antiferromagnetic ordering due to the introduction of low-coordinated carbon atoms. The hardness of the two compounds is about 40.3 and 54.5 GPa, respectively. The magnetism in both compounds is attributed to the unpaired electrons in low-coordinated carbon atoms, and the magnetic moments are 0.42 and 0.39 μ B , respectively. Interestingly, the magnetism in C 5 N 3 remains unaffected by the external pressure used in this study, whereas C 7 N 1 becomes nonmagnetic when the pressure exceeds ∼80 GPa. Electronic calculations reveal that both compounds behave as indirect band gap semiconductors, with narrow energy gaps of about 0.30 and 0.20 eV, respectively. Additionally, the other two compounds, C 6 N 2 -I and C 6 N 2 -III, exhibit nonmagnetic ordering and possess hardness values of 52.6 and 35.0 GPa, respectively. C 6 N 2 -I behaves as a semiconductor with an energy gap of 0.79 eV, and C 6 N 2 -III shows metallic behavior. Notably, the energy gaps of C 5 N 3 and C 6 N 2 -I remain nearly constant under arbitrary pressure due to their porous and superhard structure. These compounds fill the gap in magnetic or narrow band gap superhard materials, and they can be used in the spintronic or optoelectronic fields where conventional superhard materials are not suitable.

Abstract:The discovery of various two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with different phases is fundamentally and technologically intriguing, leading to diverse physical and chemical properties for expanded applications. Herein, we performed systematic first-principles calculations to explore a series of single-layer MXenes (M2 X: M=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta; X=C, N). The new H-phase MXenes are firstly predicted, which are compared with the usually synthesized MXenes named as T-phase MXenes on their structure and electronic properties. Semiconducting-metallic transitions could be realized by T-/H- phase transition for Sc2 CO2 , Sc2 CO2 H2 , and Ti2 CO2 . Besides, the differences between MXenes and MoS2 on energy storage are discussed. Our work will provide valuable directions for the discovery of new MXene phases and give a systematic understanding of 2D MXenes.

Abstract:We constructed a series of novel 3D-BC2N structures that can be obtained by compressing well-mixed carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube arrays. Sequential theoretical calculations indicated a variety of electronic and mechanical properties, such as superhardness, tunable band gap, and ductility, for these novel 3D-BC2N polymorphs. In specific, 3D (6,6)-II, 3D (4,4)-II, 3D (8,8), 3D (6,6)-I and 3D (8,0) are energetically more favorable than previously proposed diamond-like beta-BC2N; the hardness of 3D (6,6)-II can reach a remarkably high value of 72 GPa; 3D (6,0) and 3D (8,0) are direct gap superhard phases; and 3D (10,0) has a semimetallic nature.

Abstract:Using first-principles calculation, we have investigated the structural and mechanical properties of the cubic $(c)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{B}\mathrm{N}∕{\mathrm{C}}_{2}$ alloy systems, which are currently considered as strong candidates for superhard materials. We show that there is a sublinear dependence of the physical properties of the $c\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{C}}_{2}\mathrm{N}$ alloy on the number of C--C and B--N bonds in the system. Structures that maximize the number of C--C and B--N bonds have low energy, high density, and high bulk and shear moduli. Structures with unstable B--B and N--N bonds are expected to have higher energy, lower density, and elastic moduli. Based on the ``bond counting rule,'' we have identified a series of low-energy ${({C}_{2})}_{n}∕{(BN)}_{m}$ (111) superlattices whose structural parameters are similar to the recently synthesized high-density $\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{C}}_{2}\mathrm{N}$ and $\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}\mathrm{N}$ samples [Y. Zhao et al., J. Mater. Res. 17, 3139 (2002)]. The calculated bulk and shear moduli and ideal shear strengths under normal compression show that these $\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{C}}_{2}\mathrm{N}$ and $\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}\mathrm{N}$ (111) superlattices are very strong in resistance to elastic distortion at equilibrium and plastic distortion under nanoindentation. Furthermore, we show that the calculated shear modulus and ideal shear strength under normal compression also have a sublinear relationship with the measured Vickers hardness for these high-density $\mathrm{B}\mathrm{N}∕{\mathrm{C}}_{2}$ alloy systems and could thus be used as a good indicator for the hardness of these alloys.
Design of a Series of Metallic BxNx+1 with Tunable Mechanical Properties

Abstract:Here a series of sp2-sp3 BxNx+1 (x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) structures was constructed. These structures can be viewed as diamond-like BN blocks connected by single N-N bonds. Elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves confirm that all of the proposed structures are mechanically and dynamically stable. These structures all possess metallicity originating from the conductive channels formed by sp2-hybridized N atoms and adjacent sp3-hybridized B and N atoms. These structures exhibit tunable mechanical properties with a regular change in the sp2/sp3 ratio. The theoretical Vickers hardness increases and the ductility decreases as the number of diamond-like BN blocks increases, gradually approaching those of c-BN. Moreover, the convex hull at ambient pressure and 50 GPa indicates that high pressure is beneficial in the synthesis of these B-N phases. The simulated X-ray diffraction patterns of these structures were also calculated to provide more information for further experiments.

First-principles predictions of new superhard magnetic clathrate material β-C3N2 through atom embeddedness

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we predict the coexistence of mechanical superhardness and the controllable magnetism in the clathrate material β-C 3 N 2 through the implant of the external atom into the intrinsic cage structure. Taking hydrogen-doping (H@β-C 3 N 2 ) and fluorine-doping (F@β-C 3 N 2 ) as examples, our calculations indicate these two doped configurations are stable and discover that they belong to antiferromagnetic semiconductor and ferromagnetic semi-metal, respectively. These intriguing magnetic phase transitions originate from their distinctive band structures around the Fermi level and can be well understood by the three-dimensional Hubbard model with half-filling occupation and the Stoner model. Moreover, the high Vickers hardness of 49.0 GPa for H@β-C 3 N 2 and 48.2 GPa for F@β-C 3 N 2 are obtained, suggesting they are clathrate superhard materials as their host. Therefore, the incorporations of H and F in β-C 3 N 2 give rise to new types of superhard antiferromagnetic semiconductor and superhard ferromagnetic semimetal, respectively, which could have potential applications in harsh conditions. Our work provides an effective strategy to design a new class of highly desirable multifunctional materials with excellent mechanical properties and magnetic properties, which may arouse spintronic applications in superhard materials in the future.

Abstract:By analyzing the Fe-Ni-B compositional diagram, we predict an energetically and dynamically stable FeNiB2 compound. This system belongs to the class of highly responsive state of materials, as it is very sensitive to the external perturbations. This state is also characterized by a high level of spin fluctuations, which strongly influence possible magnetic long- and short-range orders. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these antiferromagnetically dominating fluctuations could lead to the appearance of spin mediated superconductivity. The obtained results suggest a promising avenue for the search of strong spin fluctuation systems and related superconductors.

Abstract:Single-atom-thick two-dimensional material containing 3d transition metal was rarely reported in the past. Based on the first principles method, we predict that the cobalt carbonitrides CoN4C10, Co2N8C6, and Co2N6C6 are a new class of two-dimensional (2D) materials, which are made up of two components: the CoN4 unit and the graphene fragment unit, arranged in a planar pattern. The stability of the CoN4C10, Co2N8C6, and Co2N6C6 monolayers is demonstrated by the formation energy and phonon spectra calculations, as well as the molecular dynamics simulations. The spin-polarized calculations reveal that all three compounds are magnetic metals, and the electronic states near Fermi energy are dominated by Co 3d electronic states. Moreover, there exist a few sharp peaks of density of state in the vicinity of Fermi energy, deriving from the dz2 orbitals of Co atom. Thus, the graphenelike transition-metal carbonitrides are not only a new class of 2D materials with single-atom-thickness but also have rich electronic properties due to the incorporation of transition metal.

First-principles prediction of two-dimensional copper borides

Abstract:This paper is a contribution to the joint Physical Review Applied and Physical Review Materials collection titled Two-Dimensional Materials and Devices. Borides of group-IB and group-IIB metals normally do not exist in the bulk form due to the small electronegativity difference and large mismatch in their atomic sizes. Contrary to these established rules, several metastable two-dimensional structures of copper boride were predicted from ab initio evolutionary searches, identifying that two structures are metallic whereas another one is strikingly a nodal line semimetal. The reduced dimensionality and intralayer coupling are responsible for the emergence of copper borides. This makes copper borides an attractive material for potential electronics applications.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for specific applications in high pressure and electronic devices, the search for superhard superconducting materials remains a topic of great interest. Using particle swarm optimization algorithm, we report five competitive structures with clear tetrahedrally sp(3) hybridization, among which two metallic orthorhombic structures (Pmm2 and Pmma) with the maximal stable bonds (C-C + B-N) are energetically more favorable than earlier proposed structures. Further first principles calculations suggest that the predicted five structures possess simultaneously superhard and superconducting properties. The five structures are with the similar calculated hardness (56-58 GPa), but show distinct difference in superconducting critical temperature, ranging from 2 to 53 K (with the Coulomb parameter mu* of 0.13). A Novel Superhard Tungsten Nitride Predicted by Machine-Learning Accelerated Crystal Structure Search.

Abstract:Transition metal nitrides have been suggested to have both high hardness and good thermal stability with large potential application value, but so far stable superhard transition metal nitrides have not been synthesized. Here, with our newly developed machine-learning accelerated crystal structure searching method, we designed a superhard tungsten nitride, h-WN6, which can be synthesized at pressure around 65 GPa and quenchable to ambient pressure. This h-WN6 is constructed with single-bonded armchair-like N-6 rings and presents ionic-like features, which can be formulated as W2.4+ N-6(2.4) . It has a band gap of 1.6 eV at 0 GPa and exhibits an abnormal gap broadening behavior under pressure. Excitingly, this h-WN6 is found to be the hardest among transition metal nitrides known so far (Vickers hardness around 57 GPa) and also has a very high melting temperature (around 1,900 K). Additionally, the good gravimetric (3.1 kJ/g) and volumetric (28.0 kJ/cm(3)) energy densities make this nitrogen-rich compound a potential high-energy-density material. These predictions support the designing rules and may stimulate future experiments to synthesize superhard and high-energy-density material. (C) 2018 Science China Press. First-Principles Calculations on Crystal and Electronic Structures of B-C-N Superhard Compounds

Abstract:Using density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation plane wave ultrasoft pseudopotential method of ab initio calculation based on the first-principles,the ternary B-C-N compounds were designed from the structure of the superhard material BeCN 2 (I-42d) using CASTEP module. The elastic constants,phonon frequency,density of states,theory Vickness hardness and highpressure physical properties were calculated. The results showed that the ternary B-C-N compounds with tetragonal structure exhibits three different unit cells of B 2 CN,BC 2 N and BCN 2 respectively. Among these three unit cells,only BC 2 N remains mechanically and dynamically stable. The bulk modulus of BC 2 N can attain up to 338 GPa. There exist metallic component and strong covalent bonds in the unit cell. The Vickness hardness of BC 2 N is 49. 0 GPa,which belongs to the superhard materials. The compressibility of BCN 2 is lower than that of cg-CN. The young modulus,bulk modulus,shear modulus and poisson coefficient increase with the pressure,which reflects the enhancement of the rigidity, resistance to transverse,tangential and longitudinal deformation ability.
