Abstract:Further hydrolysis of an open-cage fullerene derivative with an epoxy moiety on the rim of the orifice led to the formation of a new open-cage fullerene with a 17-membered orifice and an amide group directly above the orifice. The water encapsulation ratio in the new open-cage compound reached 100 % as a result of heating with water at 80 degrees C. The amide group above the orifice completely blocks the opening and forms H-bond with the trapped water molecule. Single crystal X-ray structure shows that the bond length between the trapped water oxygen and the amide oxygen is 2.859 angstrom. The H-bond energy is about -3.83 kcal/mol as shown by theoretical calculation.

Abstract:We report herein a facile synthesis of fullerene-like cages, which can be opened and closed through simple thermal treatments. A glassy carbon with enclosed fullerene-like cages of 2-3 nm was synthesized through a soft-template approach that created open mesopores of 7 nm. The open mesopores provided access to the fullerene-like cages, which were opened and closed through heat treatments in air and inert gas at various temperatures. Catalytic measurements showed that the open cages displayed strikingly higher activity for the oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutane in comparison to the closed ones. We anticipate that this synthesis approach could unravel an avenue for pursuing fundamental understanding of the unique catalytic properties of graphitic carbon nanostructures.

Abstract:Three new open-cage fullerene derivatives with a 19-membered orifice have been prepared, two of which readily formed Pt complexes when treated with Pt(PPh3)4. Several related open-cage fullerene derivatives were also found to form very stable platinum complexes, which could be purified by chromatography on silica gel under ambient conditions. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data revealed that the Pt metal formed eta 2-type coordination pattern with a fullerene double bond on the rim of the orifice. Regio-selectivity of the platinum coordination is determined by the electron density of double bonds on the cage. The most electron deficient double bond shows the highest reactivity.

Abstract:Fullerene skeleton modification has been investigated through selective cleavage of the fullerene carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions. Several cage-opened fullerene derivatives including three [59]fullerenones with an 18-membered-ring orifice and one [59]fullerenone with a 19-membered-ring orifice have been prepared starting from the fullerene mixed peroxide 1, C60(OOtBu)6. The prepositioned tert-butyl peroxy groups in 1 serve as excellent oxygen sources for formation of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The cage-opening reactions were initiated by photoinduced homolysis of the tBu-O bond, followed by sequential ring expansion steps. A key step of the ring expansion reactions is the oxidation of adjacent fullerene hydroxyl and amino groups by diacetoxyliodobenzene (DIB). Aminolysis of a cage-opened fullerene derivative containing an anhydride moiety resulted in multiple bond cleavage in one step. A domino mechanism was proposed for this reaction. Decarboxylation led to elimination of one carbon atom from the C60 cage and formation of [59]fullerenones. The cage-opened [59]fullerenones were found to encapsulate water under mild conditions. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data. Single-crystal structures were also obtained for five skeleton-modified derivatives including two water-encapsulated fulleroids.

Abstract:AbstractAn open‐cage [60]fullerene was prepared through a multiple‐step sequence based on peroxide‐mediated cage‐opening reactions. Key steps include repeated C60‐sensitized singlet‐oxygen oxidation of electron‐rich amino enol double bonds to form two lactone and two lactam moieties on the rim of the orifice. Single‐crystal X‐ray analysis shows that the 22‐membered orifice has an ellipsoid shape with the major axis at 6.7 Å and the minor axis at 3.5 Å. Encapsulation of H2O2 was observed under atmospheric pressure at room temperature. Oxygen is also effectively trapped during the process.

Abstract:A new type of open-cage [60]fullerene was prepared starting from our previously reported open-cage [60]fullerenes containing hydroxy and tert-butylperoxo groups, and an iminofuranone moiety on the rim of the orifice. The key reactions are alcoholysis with MeOH/PCl5 and reductive aromatization with SnCl2 or HI (aq). The resulting open-cage compound contains two ketone carbonyls, two amide carbonyls, and one ester carbonyl group. The X-ray crystal structure of the precursor compound shows that the 18-membered orifice is almost completely blocked because of the presence of the amide group directly above the orifice.

Abstract:The fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(OOt-Bu)(6) was found to react with FeCl3 to form open-cage compounds C-60(O)(4)(OOt-Bu)(4) 2 and C-60(O)(2)(OH)(OOt-Bu)(5) 3. Addition of hydroxyl amine to 3 closes the opening, yielding compound 5 with a hemiacetal and hemiaminal moiety. Oxidation of 5 with diacetoxyliodobenzene eliminates the hydroxylamine addend and reforms the open-cage compound 3.

Abstract:Several analogous C-58 open-cage fullerene derivatives have been prepared through silver acetate mediated decarboxylation of the corresponding C-59 open-cage precursors. Abstract:The cover feature shows the structures of two open-cage fullerenes. The structure on the left has a small opening. Reactions of this compound, including alcoholysis and reductive aromatization, led to the structure on the right. This product has a slightly larger orifice because of the opening of the iminofuranone moiety. The orifice expansion process is reminiscent of the gradual opening of a lotus flower. Abstract:AbstractOpen‐cage fullerenes with a 19‐membered orifice were prepared in three steps from C60. The key step for cage‐opening is aniline mediated ring expansion of a fullerene‐mixed peroxide with a ketolactone moiety on the orifice. Release of ring strain on the spherical fullerene cage served as the main driving force for the efficient cage‐opening sequence. Encapsulation of oxygen could be achieved at room temperature under moderate pressure (50 atm) and the encapsulated oxygen could be released slowly under ambient conditions. The activation energy of the oxygen‐releasing process is 18.8 kcal mol−1 and the half‐life at 37 °C was 73 min, which makes this open‐cage fullerene derivative a potential oxygen‐delivery material.

Abstract:To explore potential applications for open-cage fullerenes, we employed 4-((6-bromohexyl)oxy)aniline to react with an open-cage fullerene precursor which has an 11-membered orifice and prepared open-cage fullerenes with an 18-membered orifice. The bromo atom at the end of the hexyl chain in these open-cage compounds could be easily replaced by alkoxyl groups to further extend the linear chain. The results also show that the presence of the alkyl chain slightly changes the reactivity of the orifice-expansion reaction.

Abstract:Open-cage fullerenes can act as hosts for small molecules such as water, nitrogen, or hydrogen, forming endohedral fullerenes. Following a brief summary of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen insertion in the fullerene framework to form homofullerenes, methods of creating a hole in the fullerene surface are surveyed. Techniques of hole enlargement and the insertion of atoms or molecules through the orifice to form endohedral fullerenes are described. Finally, the possibility of subsequent closure of the hole is considered.

Abstract:Cage-opened fullerenes with 18-membered-ring orifices have been prepared starting from fullerene-mixed peroxides. The key transformation involves a cascade sequence including a deketalization, a S(N)2' epoxide opening reaction, and a formal 3,3-sigma rearrangement. The 18-membered-ring orifice is big enough for water encapsulation under mild conditions. Single crystal X-ray structures were obtained for both the empty and water-encapsulated fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:Open-cage fullerenes having an 11-membered orifice and keto lactone groups on the rim of the orifice reacted with both Pd(PPh3)(4) and Pd(OAc)(2)/PPh3 to form a mononuclear palladium(0) complex. Two analogous open-cage fullerenes with 18-membered orifices and carbonyl groups on the rim of the orifice reacted under the same conditions to form dinuclear palladium(0) complexes. Three of the products were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In all three structures the palladium is coordinated to a fullerene double bond adjacent to a carbonyl group in an eta(2) pattern. DFT calculations were carried out to explain the high regioselectivity of the coordination reactions.

Abstract:An open-cage C60 derivative 9 with anilino, hemiketal, and lactone moieties on the edge of the opening was prepared through a fullerene-mixed peroxide procedure. Key steps include decarbonylation, intramolecular Friedel-Crafts reaction and oxetane ring opening rearrangement. The open-cage compound 9 readily reacts with various metal salts. A nickel complex was obtained by treating 9 with NiCl2 at r.t. followed by purification on a silica gel column. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the nickel ion is coordinated to two ligands with an octahedral geometry.

Abstract:A reversible wetting/dewetting procedure is reported for an open-cage fullerene with an 18-membered orifice. In a homogeneous mixture of H2O/EtOH/CHCl3, water was encapsulated into the cavity of the open-cage compound quantitatively at 80 degrees C. Addition of aqueous hydrogen fluoride into the water-encapsulated complex removed the encapsulated water completely at room temperature. H-bonding between the trapped water and fluoride is shown to play a key role for the water release process.
