Abstract:The rational design of high-efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is of significance in electrochemical energy conversion. However, such low-cost but highly active electrocatalysts remain poorly developed because of the daunting synthetic challenge. Here, the synthesis of NiSe2/Fe3O4 nanotubes via a facile self-templating strategy, which manifests unique tetragonal morphology, asymmetric hollow interior, and unusual but adaptable heteroepitaxy structure, is reported. Benefiting from sufficient active sites and their improved activity around the heterointerface, accompanied by the good conductivity, the NiSe2/Fe3O4 nanotubes exhibit as a superior OER electrocatalyst, which affords the current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a very small overpotential of 199 mV, high attainable current density beyond 200 mA cm(-2), and mass activity of 984.5 A g(-1), as well as excellent stability for 100 h in the alkaline media. This work provides a unique synthetic pathway to fabricate superior OER electrocatalysts by optimizing their composition and architecture.

Abstract:AbstractManipulating the active species and improving the structural stabilization of sulfur‐containing catalysts during the OER process remain a tremendous challenge. Herein, we constructed NiO/NiS2and Fe−NiO/NiS2as catalyst models to study the effect of Fe doping. As expected, Fe−NiO/NiS2exhibits a low overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm−2. The accumulation of hydroxyl groups on the surface of materials after Fe doping can promote the formation of highly active NiOOH at a lower OER potential. Moreover, we investigated the level of corrosion of M−S bonds and compared the stability variation of M−S bonds with Fe at different locations. Interestingly, Fe bonded with S in the bulk as the sacrificial agent can alleviate the oxidation corrosion of partial Ni−S bonds and thus endow Fe−NiO/NiS2long‐term durability. This work could motivate the community to focus more on resolving the corrosion of sulfur‐containing materials.

Abstract:Surface reconstruction of electrocatalysts has been widely witnessed during the electrochemical processes. Here, NiS2, NiSe2, and Se doped NiS2 (Se-NiS2) are fabricated for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through a mild sulfuration and/or selenylation process of Ni(OH)2 supported on carbon cloth (CC). Through careful in-situ Raman spectroscopy and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface reconstruction of NiS2, NiSe2, and Se-NiS2 during the OER process has been revealed. A potentialdependent study shows that Se-NiS2 undergoes surface evolution at lower potentials and requires the lowest potential for conversion to NiOOH as a highly OER-active species, accompanied by the leaching of SO42- and SeO42- that can again be adsorbed on the catalyst surface to enhance the catalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that Se-NiS2 is more susceptible to surface oxidation through the OER process. Therefore, Se-NiS2 exhibits outstanding OER activity and stability in alkaline conditions, requiring an overpotential of 343 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm-2. Abstract:The mesoporous single crystals with decorated pore walls act as the ideal integral microreactors to simultaneously achieve the highly active sites and their easy accessibility in a stable and electronic conductive structure for excellent OER performance. Abundant active sites and their easy accessibility in a stable and conductive structure are of great importance for efficient electrocatalysts. In principle, activated mesoporous single‐crystal microparticles can meet these desired requirements. Here, the Fe‐doped NiS2 mesoporous single crystal microparticles decorated with FeS clusters on the pore walls (FeS@MSC‐NiS2:Fe) are constructed via a pre‐decorated and sequentially seeded mesoporous silica template. Throughout the external and internal surfaces, the Fe‐doped NiS2 modulated by the adjacent FeS clusters induces favorable charge distributions and promotes the crucial formation of the active Fe/Ni (oxy)hydroxide. Combined with the spatial enrichment effect of the intermediates in the holey space and the boosted charge transfer within the continuous single‐crystalline framework, the dually regulated FeS@MSC‐NiS2:Fe as ideal integral microreactors show efficient performances in oxygen evolution reaction. In electrochemical tests, the particulate FeS@MSC‐NiS2:Fe requires an overpotential of only 236 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and displays fast reaction kinetics with a Tafel slope of 32.4 mV dec−1. This study provides an important strategy to construct electrocatalysts with highly active sites and good accessibility.

Abstract:Developing earth-abundant, highly active, and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is very important for many renewable energy conversion processes. Herein, we report a novel OER electrocatalyst of NiCo layered double hydroxide@NiCo-hydroxysulfide (NiCo-LDH@HOS) nanosheet arrays, which are prepared by a rapid room-temperature sulfurization of the surface of NiCo-LDH nanosheets grown on Ni foam. The surface sulfurization exerts important influences/changes on the structure, composition, surface properties and chemistry of NiCo-LDH. After surface sulfurization, the resulted NiCo-hydroxysulfide layer armor improved electrical conductivity and chemical resistance to alkaline electrolyte, delivers a stable current density of 10.0 mA cm(-2) at a low overpotential of 293 mV in 0.1 M KOH solution, maintaining high stability during a 62 h test. The achieved enhanced oxygen evolution activity and improved durability are superior to those of NiCo-LDH nanosheets and benchmark commercial RuO2. This example of NiCo-LDH@HOS obtained via surface sulfurization with enhanced OER electrocatalysis performance, highlights an important strategy to fabricate high-performance metal hydroxide/hydroxysulfides heterostructured catalysts for OER and other electrochemical storage and conversion progress.
Promoting Surface Reconstruction of NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:It is found that lattice doping by sulfur can promote the surface reconstruction of NiFe layered double hydroxide for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity. The enhancement mechanism and adsorption sites are identified. A dynamic surface reconstruction of oxide electrocatalysts in alkaline media is widely observed especially for layered double hydroxide (LDH), but little is known about how to promote the reconstruction toward desired surfaces for improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, surface reconstruction of NiFe LDH nanosheets is successfully induced to a higher degree via in situ sulfur doping than that by natural electrochemical activation. Theoretical calculations, operando Raman, and various ex situ characterizations reveal the S anion‐induced effect can lower the energy barrier and facilitate the phase transformation into highly active S‐doped oxyhydroxides. The generated S‐NixFeyOOH can optimize the intermediate adsorption and facilitate the OER kinetics. The reconstructed S‐oxyhydroxides catalyst presents superior OER activity and long‐term durability compared to undoped ones. This work provides a structure–composition–activity relationship during the in situ surface restructuring of NiFe LDH pre‐catalysts.

Electrochemical reconfiguration of iron-modified Ni3S2 surface induced oxygen vacancies to immobilize sulfate for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:There is an urgent need for highly active, durable, and low-cost electrocatalysts to overcome the shortcomings of high overpotential in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. In this work, the nickel-iron hydroxysulfate rich in sulfate and oxygen vacancies (SO42-@Fe-NiOOH-Ov/NiS) is legitimately constructed. SO42-@Fe-NiOOH-Ov/NiS only requires a low overpotentials of 190 mV and 232 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2 current densities in 1 M KOH, with excellent stability for 200 h at 100 mA cm-2 current density. In situ Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated the stable adsorption of more SO42- on the surface of catalyst. Density functional theory calculations testify surface reconstruction, doped Fe and oxygen vacancies significantly reduced the adsorption energy of sulfate on the surface. More importantly, the formation of *OOH to O2 is facilitated by the highly hydrogen bonding between SO42- and *OOH, accelerating the OER process.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and stable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an ongoing challenge due to the sluggish kinetics of the OER. In this study, the (Ni,Fe,V) 3 S 4 –NiS nanoheterostructure rich in Ni 3+ was obtained by sulfidizing the NiFeV layered double hydroxide hydrogen precursor. The introduction of Fe and V effectively modified the electronic structure of Ni x S y and increased the content of Ni 3+ , which was conducive to enhancing the chemisorption of OH − and promoting the transfer of electrons to the surface during the OER process. At the same time, the self-supporting porous structure, the unique metallic characteristics of Ni x S y (continuous Ni–Ni bonds) and excellent electrical conductivity can facilitate electrolyte diffusion and bubble release. The designed (Ni,Fe,V) 3 S 4 –NiS/NF electrode shows excellent electrocatalytic OER performance with an overpotential of 236 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , ultra-low Tafel slope (53.7 mV dec −1 ) and excellent long-term stability. Therefore, this work offers a simple strategy to design an efficient Ni based OER electrocatalyst enriched with Ni 3+ sites by co-doping high-valence ions.

Abstract:Highly active and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts have become essential to replace commercial electrocatalysts that rely on rare noble metals. High-entropy sulfide nanomaterials, characterized by abundant randomly distributed elements and inherent stability, possess significant potential for applications. However, challenges such as uneven composition, partial oxidation, or imprecise synthesis control still remain in the materials preparation. Herein, a simple and effective two-step hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize NiCoFeCuS nanoparticles supported on foam nickel substrate. With the catalytic active sites produced by electron density redistribution in high-entropy and sulfurization, NiCoFeCuS exhibits excellent alkaline OER performance, with an overpotential of 261 mV and a Tafel slope of 57.97 mV dec(-1) at the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is only 88% of commercial RuO2 without any noble metals. Optimized heterostructure of FeS/Ni3S2 enabling robust oxygen evolution reaction for Zn-Air batteries

Abstract:Construction heterointerfaces of transition metal sulfides is an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by modulating their electronic structures. Further, incorporating these sulfides with a carbon-based support can improve their catalytic stability by preventing metal active site demetallization and dissolution. Herein, we utilized a combined hard template-pyrolysis method to construct heterostructure of FeS and Ni3S2 encapsulated in N-doped carbon (FeS/Ni3S2-x/NC) and optimized the heterostructure by adjusting the Fe and Ni precursor ratio. Largely exposed FeS/Ni3S2 heterointerfaces enabled a high OER catalytic activity. Especially, the optimized heterostructure of FeS/Ni3S2-2/NC with a larger electrochemical active area and more activity sites (Ni3+) afforded a small OER overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm−2, and exhibited a negligible voltage loss for 35-hour operation at 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, FeS/Ni3S2-2/NC was employed in rechargeable zinc-air batteries as the air cathode, displaying a superior charge performance and operational stability over 300 h at 5 mA cm−2. This work provides a promising design and engineering strategy for transition metal sulfides as effective OER catalysts.

Abstract:The development of efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts is essential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water splitting. Among them, amorphous bimetallic NiFe-based compounds are recognized as one of the excellent candidates for efficient OER. Herein, the Ni-Fe-Se film is rationally designed via facile one-step elec-trodeposition with tailored active sites and thicknesses. Accordingly, the optimized sample, with an increased Fe -incorporation level and a thickness of-50 nm, shows a low overpotential of-290 mV at a current density of 40 mA cm-2 and long-term durability in 1 M KOH solution, representing its overall excellent OER performance. Furthermore, operando Raman and ex-situ XPS are used to identify the active sites for OER. This work provides some new insights into exploring earth-abundant free-standing catalysts for OER toward overall water-splitting applications.
Ternary sulfide nanoparticles anchored in carbon bubble structure for oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:The synergistic effect and unique interfacial structure of ternary transition metal (Co, Ni, Fe) sulfides are significant in improving the catalytic performance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the ultrathin Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S ternary sulfide nanoparticles (Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs) anchored in carbon bubble structure with rich pore structures (Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C) were firstly constructed via a cost-effective and general solid-phase synthesis strategy. Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C has a crystalline structure of Co 1−x S, accompanying the shift of diffraction peaks, which indicate the doping of nickel and iron atoms into Co 1−x S lattice. Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C catalyst has good OER activity with a low overpotential of 322 mV at 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, superior to single metal sulfide synthesized at the same conditions. More importantly, the Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C catalyst possesses excellent stability with a low current density decrease in the continuous 336 h I-t test. The good catalytic intrinsic activity may originate from the synergistic effect among the highly exposed Fe, Co, and Ni sulfide grown on the porous carbon bubbles and the unique reconstruction structure formed during the OER process. This work provides some reference significance for the systematic study of the synergistic effects between multicomponents and the relationship between interfacial modulation and OER.

Abstract:Nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2)-based electrocatalysts are promising for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their low cost, but their activity and durability still need substantial improvement to meet practical application. Here, we report a sulfate-functionalized Ni(OH)2 nanobelt (S-Ni(OH)2) electrocatalyst, which exhibited self-enhanced OER activity due to its self-renewed surface during anodic oxidation. The S-Ni(OH)2 was in situ grown on the nickel foam (NF) surface in potassium peroxydisulfate solution through one-step hydrothermal treatment. This material outperformed all the existing electrocatalysts in the intensity and duration of the OER activity enhancement. An overpotential drop of 70 mV is shown by the S-Ni(OH)2/NF electrode during 110 h reaction at a current density of 100 mA cm-2, and the overpotential remains as low as 358 mV at a current density of 200 mA cm-2. Such activity enhancement during OER is mainly ascribed to the formation of a highly active NiOOH/Ni(SO4)0.3(OH)1.4 composite on the S-Ni(OH)2 surface as a result of gradual sulfate release. Given the facile and environmentally benign fabrication process (without external addition of a Ni source and surfactant) and good electrochemical properties (high activity and long lifetime), the S-Ni(OH)2 holds great potential for practical OER application. The surface self-renewal strategy developed here might also be expanded to other electrocatalysts and electrochemical processes.
In Situ Surface Chemistry Engineering of Cobalt-Sulfide Nanosheets for Improved Oxygen Evolution Activity

Abstract:Large surface area and unique surface chemical environment are two critical factors for a catalyst, both of which can highly influence the catalytic activity. In this study, we present a small molecular amine mediated one-step approach to directly synthesize thin cobalt sulfide nanosheets by employing sulfur powder and CoCl2 as the reaction precursor. The surface chemical environment including cobalt oxidation state of the obtained cobalt sulfide materials can be in situ finely tuned by sulfur dosage. The as-prepared and optimized cobalt sulfide nanosheets with thickness of 5-12 nm have a favorable surface chemical environment including amounts of highly active Co(III) species, easy transform of Co(II) to Co(III), richness of defects, and higher electrochemical surface area, which induce enhanced catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. When used as an electrocatalyst, the optimized cobalt sulfide catalyst offers an overpotential of 312 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and mass loading of 0.37-0.45 mg cm(-2), which can remain constant for at least 36 h of OER operation in 1 M KOH electrolyte. This electrocatalytic activity is better than most of reported monometallic cobalt sulfide materials and commercial RuO2.

Abstract:High-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting are desired due to the urgent requirement of clean and sustainable hydrogen production. To reduce the energy barrier, herein, we adopt a facile in-situ surface modification strategy to develop a low-cost and efficient electrocatalyst for water splitting. The synthesized mulberry-like NiS/Ni nanoparticles exhibit excellent catalytic performance for water splitting. Small overpotentials of 301 and 161 mV are needed to drive the current density of 10 mA cm(-2) accompanying with remarkably low Tafel slopes of 46 and 74 mV dec(-1) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Meanwhile, a robust electrochemical stability is demonstrated. Further high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses reveal that the intrinsic HER activity improvement is attributed to the electron-enriched S on the strongly coupled NiS and Ni interface, which simultaneously facilitates the important electron transfer, consistent with the electrochemical impedance results. The post characterizations demonstrate that surface reconstructed oxyhydroxide contributes to the OER activity and NiS/Ni is an OER precatalyst. This structure construction with in-situ formation of active interface provides an effective way to design efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion. Facile Synthesis of Medium‐Entropy Metal Sulfides as High‐Efficiency Electrocatalysts toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Medium‐entropy metal sulfides (MEMS) of (NiFeCoX)3S4 (where X = Mn, Cr, Zn) are synthesized via a facile one‐pot solvothermal method using diethyldithiocarbamate complexes as molecular precursors. Benefiting from multiple‐metal synergistic effect and low crystallinity, these MEMS display remarkably enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction performance as compared to the corresponding ternary‐NiFeCo and binary‐NiFe sulfides, and even outperform the costly IrO2 benchmark electrocatalyst. Developing highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an urgent demand to produce clean hydrogen energy. In this study, a series of medium‐entropy metal sulfides (MEMS) of (NiFeCoX)3S4 (where X = Mn, Cr, Zn) are synthesized by a facile one‐pot solvothermal strategy using molecular precursors. Benefiting from the multiple‐metal synergistic effect and the low crystallinity, these MEMS show significantly enhanced electrocatalytic OER activity compared with the binary‐metal (NiFe)3S4 and ternary‐metal (NiFeCo)3S4 counterparts. Especially, (NiFeCoMn)3S4 delivers a low overpotential of 289 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a decent Tafel slope of 75.6 mV dec−1 and robust catalytic stability in alkaline medium, outperforming the costly IrO2 benchmark electrocatalyst and the majority of the reported metal sulfide‐based electrocatalysts until now. These MEMS with facile synthesis and excellent electrocatalytic performance bring a great opportunity to design desirable electrocatalysts for practical application.
