Abstract:Spontaneous conversion of environmental moisture energy to high-output electricity can help meet the massive electricity demand of wearable electronics. However, low power density and inefficient energy harvesting are the main challenges to power electronics currently. Herein, we developed a flexible moisture-enabled electricity generation (MEG) membrane with high output power. The asymmetrical structure of the moisture-enabled flexible units is composed of a bilayer of polyanion and polycation. The single device produced a sustained voltage of 0.8 V and can be customized by an aligned stacking strategy for scale integration on demand. Enhanced by increasing the diffusion speed of carriers with the metal-air reaction, the output power reached 286.5 mu W/cm2, which is enough for long-term wearable health monitoring. Meanwhile, to solve the power supply challenge of the wearables, a fully self-powered system with an energy harvester, a power management module, and a wireless and wearable sensing module was developed. Biochemical indicators and body motion were detected and monitored by the sensor array, demonstrating the promising application in wearable health management, including harvesting energy from giant moisture and powering wearable electronics.

Abstract:The electric generation performance of traditional polyelectrolyte membrane with moisture usually fall far behind expectations due to its limited hydrophilic groups and poor directional transport capacity of protons. To this end, we introduce the suspension of carbon dots (CDs) prepared by selective oxidation etching of coal pitch with the mixture of formic acid and H2O2 under ambient temperature into the aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(4-styrensulfonic acid) (PSS) to fabricate a novel hybrid membrane. This membrane (1.00 cm2) continuously delivers a voltage output of 0.83 V with a short-circuit current of 5.20 μA under proper moist conditions over a prolonged period, outperforming the power generation performance of the pristine membrane and many current moisture-enabled electric generation (MEG) devices. Moreover, CDs endow the polymer membrane with more superior mechanical properties, in favor of processing and scale integration for higher power output. With excess hydrophilic groups provided by as-prepared CDs’ suspension, the denser hydrogen-bond network can be formed in the membrane and facilitates water adsorption and the formation of a higher proton concentration gradient. CDs-induced bridging interactions between PSS chains pave a fast directional transport pathway for moveable protons, resulting in a remarkable power output. Accordingly, this work offers a facile and economic method for remoulding traditional polyelectrolyte membrane to conduct highly efficient MEG for practical applications.

Abstract:In the realm of energy harvesting, free-standing, film-type, moisture-driven electricity generators (MEGs) based on polymer hydrogels with moisture-retaining capability are promising as a convenient and practical power source, making them potentially suitable for various self-powered, wearable, and patchable electronic devices. Their performance is, however, substantially degraded under low-humidity (<40%) conditions owing to the limited water supply to the device. This study presents a high-performance film-type MEG that functions at a low humidity of 20%. The MEG is based on an ion-selective polymer aerogel as an electricity-generating layer, constructed on a water-collecting gel as a water reservoir. The water-collecting gel in the bi-layered MEG absorbs moisture even under low-humidity conditions and efficiently delivers moisture to the electricity-generating aerogel layer. The energy-harvesting ability of the electricity-generating aerogel layer is further facilitated by its characteristic vertical microstructure, which comprises aerogel pores directionally grown on the frozen water-collecting gel during the freeze-drying process. The low humidity-tolerant MEG generated a stable open-circuit voltage of 1.1 V for more than 500 min even under dry conditions (20% relative humidity). Various self-powered electronic applications are demonstrated with the low-humidity-tolerant, bi-layered MEGs in dry environments. This study provides new insights for designing future MEGs for operation in low-humidity environments, further facilitating the development of green and sustainable power generation.

Abstract:Limited by the single power generation form and insufficient output performance, a light‐coordinated moisture‐electricity generating hydrogel is prepared by polymerization of acrylamide with phytic acid and photosensitizers. The generating voltage and current of the hydrogel can reach 0.838 V and 635.543 μA. This work pioneers a sustainable power generation pathway through the hybrid collection of multiple natural energy sources. Due to its widespread availability and spontaneity, moisture electricity generation (MEG) holds unique advantages in self‐powered systems. However, it faces challenges, including the limitations of relying on a single kind of power generation and insufficient output performance. Inspired by the mechanisms of water absorption of plants, this paper explores a light‐moisture coordinated electricity generating hydrogel (L‐MEGH) device with flexible, scalable, and highly efficient energy conversion performance, which is obtained through the UV polymerization of hydrophilic acrylamide (AAM) and phytic acid (PA) in the presence of photosensitizers. The obtained hydrogel demonstrates superior moisture absorption and remarkable electricity generation stability across a range of humidity conditions. Notably, the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of the L‐MEGH increased from 0.675 to 0.838 V after the addition of photosensitizers (Erythrosin B, E) (the significant enhancement, up to 24%), and the short‐circuit current (Isc) reaching 635.543 μA. This L‐MEGH can realize stable electrical output even under extreme temperatures, producing 0.5 V at −20 °C for 45 h. The scalable L‐MEGHs (connected on‐demand in series/parallel) can power various commercial electronics, including nighttime illumination, mobile phones, and health monitoring sensors. This work pioneers a sustainable power generation pathway capable of enhancing performance through the hybrid collection of multiple natural energy sources.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern society, our demand for energy is increasing. And the extensive use of fossil energy has triggered a series of problems such as an energy crisis and environmental pollution. A moisture-enabled electric generator (MEG) is a new type of energy conversion method, which can directly convert the ubiquitous moisture in the air into electrical energy equipment. It has attracted great interest for its renewable and environmentally friendly qualities. At present, most MEGs still have low power density, strong dependence on high humidity, and high cost. Herein, we report the development of a high-efficiency MEG based on a lignocellulosic fiber frame with high-power-density, all-weather, and low-cost characteristics using a simple strategy that optimizes the charge transport channel and ion concentration difference. The MEG devices we manufactured can generate the open-circuit voltage of 0.73 V and the short-circuit current of 360 őľA, and the voltage can still reach 0.6 V at less than 30% humidity. It is possible to drive commercial electronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, electronic displays, and electronic calculators by simply connecting several electric generators in series. Biomass-based moisture-enabled electric generation has a low cost, is easy to integrate on a large scale, and is green and pollution-free, providing clean energy for low-humidity or high-electricity-cost areas.

Abstract:The progress of spontaneous energy generation from ubiquitous moisture has been hindered the low output current and intermittent operating voltage of the moisture‐electric generators. Herein we develop a novel and efficient ionic hydrogel moisture‐electric generator (IHMEG) by rational combination of poly(vinyl alcohol), phytic acid and glycerol‐water binary solvent. Thanks to the synergistic effect of notable moisture‐absorption capability and fast ion transport capability in the ionic hydrogel network, a single IHMEG unit of 0.25 cm2 can continuously generate direct‐current electricity with a constant open‐circuit voltage of ∼0.8 V for over 1000 hours, a high short‐current density of 0.24 mA·cm–2 and power density of up to 35 μW·cm–2. Of great importance is that large‐scale integration of IHMEG units can be readily accomplished to offer a device with voltage up to 210 V, capable of directly driving numerous commercial electronics, including electronic ink screen, metal electrodeposition setup and light‐emitting‐diode arrays. Such prominent performance is mainly attributed to the enhanced moisture‐liberated proton diffusion proved by experimental observation and theoretical analysis. The ionic hydrogel with high cost‐efficiency, easy‐to‐scaleup fabrication and high power‐output opens a brand‐new perspective to develop a green, versatile and efficient power source for Internet‐of‐Things and wearable electronics.This article is protected by copyright. A Hydrogel-Based Moist-Electric Generator with Superior Energy Output and Environmental Adaptability

Abstract:Harvesting energy from ubiquitous moisture has emerged as a promising way to collect energy irrespective of location and time. However, the electrical output of moist-electric generators (MEGs) is currently insufficient for practical applications. In this study, a highly efficient electricity-generating film was constructed by combining silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanofibers, sodium alginate (SA) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) matrix impregnated with calcium chloride. The resulting SA-SiO2-rGO (SSG) film demonstrates a strong moisture-adsorption ability of 1.6 g/g at 80 % RH and 30 degrees C, and a relatively high ionic conductivity of 1.46 S m -1 . The SSG film's strong moisture-adsorption capacity allows rapid ion dissociation, and its excellent electrical conductivity enhances ion migration. Thus, a single centimeter-sized device generates an open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of up to -0.6 V and a short-circuit current ( I sc ) of -2.24 mA (0.14 mA cm -2 ). This short-circuit current is more than 10 times those of most reported MEGs. Moreover, an SSG-film-based MEG maintains a voltage output of -0.6 V over rather wide ranges of temperature (0-40 degrees C) and relative humidity (20 %-80 %), demonstrating superior environmental adaptability. In summary, this study provides fresh insights into the design of high-performance composite materials for efficient moist-electric energy conversion.

Abstract:Abstract Harvesting electricity from ubiquitous water vapor represents a promising route to alleviate the energy crisis. However, existing studies rarely comprehensively consider the impact of natural environmental fluctuations on electrical output. Here, we demonstrate a bilayer polymer enabling self-sustaining and highly efficient moisture-electric generation from the hydrological cycle by establishing a stable internal directed water/ion flow through thermal exchange with the ambient environment. Specifically, the radiative cooling effect of the hydrophobic top layer prevents the excessive daytime evaporation from solar absorption while accelerating nighttime moisture sorption. The introduction of LiCl into the bottom hygroscopic ionic hydrogel enhances moisture sorption capacity and facilitates ion transport, thus ensuring efficient energy conversion. A single device unit (1 cm 2 ) can continuously generate a voltage of ~0.88 V and a current of ~306 μA, delivering a maximum power density of ~51 μW cm −2 at 25 °C and 70% relative humidity (RH). The device has been demonstrated to operate steadily outdoors for continuous 6 days.

Abstract:The ionic diode structure has become one of the attractive structures in the field of moisture-based power generation. However, existing devices still suffer from poor moisture trapping, low surface charge, and inefficient ion separation, resulting in low output power. Moreover, water freezes at low temperatures (<0 °C), limiting the ionic diode structure to generate electricity in cold environments. In this paper, a moisture-enabled power generator has been designed and fabricated, which assembles a negatively charged ionic hydrogel film and a positively charged anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) film to construct a heterojunction. The hydrogel polymer network is modified with a large number of sulfonate groups that dissociate to provide nanoscale pores with high surface charge to improve the rectification ratio. And the lithium chloride (LiCl) salt with high hydration ability is added to the hydrogel as a moisture-trapping and anti-freezing component. Usually salt ions reduce the Debye length, so that the ion transport is finally not controlled by the electric double layer (EDL) and the rectification fails. Interestingly, due to the natural affinity of the hydrogel polymer network for LiCl, LiCl is locked on the hydrogel side and does not easily enter the AAO pores to change the distribution of EDL within the nanochannel. As a result, the device rectification ratio is almost independent of the amount of LiCl addition, demonstrating an excellent balance of high output power and high freeze resistance. Ultimately, the device exhibits excellent power generation performance in the -20 °C to 60 °C temperature range and 15% to 93% RH humidity range. Typically, under high humidity (93% RH) at room temperature (25 °C), it provides an open-circuit voltage of 1.25 V and a short-circuit current of 300 μA cm-2, with an on-load output power of up to 71.35 μW cm-2. Under medium humidity (50% RH) at low temperature (-20 °C), it provides an open-circuit voltage of 1.11 V and a short-circuit current of 15 μA cm-2.

Abstract:Moisture-electric generators (MEGs), harvesting ubiquitous moisture from the environment for electricity generation, have attracted great interest as power supply devices. However, the material availability, fabrication accessibility and operation environment are huge challenges in achieving high output with low cost for practical applications, and a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanism is urgent to be clarified regarding the interaction between MEG and water. Here, the whey protein available in supermarket is used to fabricate low-cost MEG with controllable performance through tuning surface charges and hydrophilicity, which shed new light on the electricity generation mechanism and large-scale application. The MEG exhibits the highest voltage output of 1.45 V at room humidity level of 40% relative humidity. The whey protein films possess merits of low cost (70 times cheaper than commonly used polymers), being flexible, semi-transparent, and self-healing ability, presenting excellent comprehensive device performance. Besides, MEGs can operate well at extreme temperatures (-20 °C or 50 °C) and power a location tracker in a desert with 26% relative humidity. The modified functional layers with selective ion absorption and controllable outputs provided a deeper understanding of electricity generation in MEGs and demonstrated a great potential in powering a wide range of electronic devices in various dynamic environments with high sustainability and reliability.

Abstract:A high‐performance moisture‐enabled electricity generation (MEG) device with an easy scale‐up, all‐weather and flexible characteristics is fabricated based on the rational combination of carbonized polymer dots and liquid metal active electrode for the first time. The MEG device can produce a stable voltage output of 0.8 V and a record high current density of 1.64 mA cm−2. Moisture‐enabled electricity generation (MEG) is highly promising in next‐generation energy conversion. However, the practical applications of existing MEG devices are limited due to their low current and voltage outputs, strong dependence on high moisture, and inflexible nature. Herein, an efficient MEG integrated with flexible, all‐weather, and scalable fabrication characteristics based on the rational combination of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) and liquid metal (LM) active electrodes is developed for the first time. Remarkably, the fabricated MEG device can produce a stable voltage output of 800 mV and a record high current density of 1640 μA cm−2. Even at a low air humidity of 15%, the MEG device can provide a high voltage output of 0.65 V and a considerable current density of 12 μA cm−2. The prompted diffusion of hydrogen ions in CPDs and the additional metal ions ionized from the LM electrode contribute synergistically to the high electricity generation. Additionally, the device can be easily integrated on various flexible substrates and generate an ultrahigh voltage of 210 V to power commercial electronics, showing great potential in large‐scale fabrication and application.

Abstract:Abstract Moisture-electric generators (MEGs) has emerged as promising green technology to achieve carbon neutrality in next-generation energy suppliers, especially combined with ecofriendly materials. Hitherto, challenges remain for MEGs as direct power source in practical applications due to low and intermittent electric output. Here we design a green MEG with high direct-current electricity by introducing polyvinyl alcohol-sodium alginate-based supramolecular hydrogel as active material. A single unit can generate an improved power density of ca. 0.11 mW cm −2 , a milliamp-scale short-circuit current density of ca. 1.31 mA cm −2 and an open-circuit voltage of ca. 1.30 V. Such excellent electricity is mainly attributed to enhanced moisture absorption and remained water gradient to initiate ample ions transport within hydrogel by theoretical calculation and experiments. Notably, an enlarged current of ca. 65 mA is achieved by a parallel-integrated MEG bank. The scalable MEGs can directly power many commercial electronics in real-life scenarios, such as charging smart watch, illuminating a household bulb, driving a digital clock for one month. This work provides new insight into constructing green, high-performance and scalable energy source for Internet-of-Things and wearable applications.

Abstract:The moisture-enabled electricity generators (MEGs) represent an appealing clean power strategy within the realm of hydrovoltaic technology. However, their stable operation under all-weather conditions is still challengeable due to the effect of ambient humidity. Herein, a self-water-storage MEGs with multifunctionality was developed. Gel textiles are employed as the proton-release layer, while graphite fibers loaded with tin-bismuth alloy liquid metal serve as water-storing electrode. The gel textiles absorb water permeating down from the electrodes, releasing protons, which then react with the active electrode to enhance output performance. The experiment demonstrates that a device can generate a voltage of 0.55 V and a current of 7.08 mu A after water storage, with a maximum power density of 1.14 mu Wcm-(2). The device's performance output can remain stable within a wide temperature range. The experiment confirms that the electrical output of the device originates from ionic diffusion, while density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) calculations reveal the importance of the strong hydrolysis ability of the polymer and the high adsorption energy of the liquid metal for H3O+ on the output performance of the device. Furthermore, the integrated device has demonstrated effective applications in driving microelectronic devices, charging capacitors and, self-powered health monitoring. Self-water-storage MEGs with multifunctionality are developed. The experiment demonstrates that a device can generate a voltage of 0.55 V and a current of 7.08 mu A after water storage (0.45 ml), with a maximum power density of 1.14 mu Wcm-2. Abstract:The excellent hydrophilicity of hydrogel makes it an ideal material for moisture-enable electricity. However, the lack of efficient protonation or ion diffusion leads to poor moisture-electric performance. Herein, a nanocellulose-base hydrogel moisture-electric generator (N-HMEG) is developed by composed of sulfated cellulose nanofibers (SCNF) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with glycerol-water binary solvent. The SCNF and glycerol promote the ion diffusion and hygroscopicity of hydrogel, respectively. A N-HMEG can generate an open-circuit voltage of 0.9 V and short-circuit current density of 92 μA cm −2 at 80% relative humidity. The remarkable performances of N-HMEG can be attributed to the synergistic effect of asymmetric ionic diffusion and redox reaction on the electrode. Furthermore, the large-scale integration of N-HMEGs can be easily accomplished to deliver a voltage of up to 102 V with 130 units in series. The integrated N-HMEGs are demonstrated to provide power for commercial electronics. This work provides an effective method for designing of moisture-electric generators, which will facilitate the development of green power sources in the future.

Abstract:Moist‐electric generators are effectively fabricated and efficiently integrated using a scalable 3D printing method, which enables actively harvesting moisture power for high‐performance energy output with various applications of practical importance. Water‐enabled electricity generation technologies that are highly accessible and fundamentally clean are promising for next‐generation green energy. However, the challenge of scalability in both material processing and device fabrication greatly limits their practical applications. A high‐performance polyelectrolyte moist‐electric generator (MEG), which can be directly 3D printed for massive production and efficient integration, is reported. The printed MEG (p‐MEG) generates a high open‐circuit voltage of 0.8 V and a short‐circuit‐current density of 0.12 mA cm−2 by actively harvesting moisture from humid conditions. The synergistic effects of moisture gradient, ionic concentration gradient, and ion diffusion gradient, which remarkably enhance the driving force to separate ion pairs and notably facilitate the directional ion transport, are responsible for the high power generation performance of p‐MEG, as further backed up by in situ ion dynamics investigations and molecular simulations. When connected in serial and parallel, hundreds of p‐MEGs can deliver a high voltage of more than 180 V and a current of more than 1 mA. A constructed "moisture‐powered cup lamp" that lights up for hours further demonstrates the practicability of p‐MEG. This work provides a feasible and scalable 3D printing approach for the next‐generation environment‐adaptive self‐powered system.

Abstract:Moisture-enabled electricity (ME) is a method of converting the potential energy of water in the external environment into electrical energy through the interaction of functional materials with water molecules and can be directly applied to energy harvesting and signal expression. However, ME can be unreliable in numerous applications due to its sluggish response to moisture, thus sacrificing the value of fast energy harvesting and highly accurate information representation. Here, by constructing a moisture-electric–moisture-sensitive (ME-MS) heterostructure, we develop an efficient ME generator with ultra-fast electric response to moisture achieved by triggering Grotthuss protons hopping in the sensitized ZnO, which modulates the heterostructure built-in interfacial potential, enables quick response (0.435 s), an unprecedented ultra-fast response rate of 972.4 mV s−1, and a durable electrical signal output for 8 h without any attenuation. Our research provides an efficient way to generate electricity and important insight for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of moisture-generated carrier migration in ME generator, which has a more comprehensive working scene and can serve as a typical model for human health monitoring and smart medical electronics design.

Abstract:Moisture-induced electric generation has emerged as a promising powering solution for next-generation wearable electronics since moisture is ubiquitous in the atmosphere. However, the practical applications of current film-shaped generators are limited by the challenge of wearable comfort and large-scale integration into wearables. Herein, we reported a strategy to prepare flexible and high-performance core-shell yarn-shaped moisture-induced electric generator (YMEG) via employing metal wire as the core electrode, polymer-salt solution-treated electrospun nanofiber mats as the active layer, and deposited sliver as the shell electrode. Through the moisture induced interaction between active layer and electrode, the obtained best performance of YMEG with length of 2 cm can produce a highly stable voltage of ~0.8 V and a current density of 14.3 μA/cm 2 , reaching the state-of-the-art level among the reported one-dimensional fiber/yarn-shaped MEGs. Furthermore, benefiting from the weavability of YMEG, a dislocation ordered stacking strategy is created for effective integration of YMEG units into fabric, and realizing the simultaneous enhancement of output voltage and current. Such integrated fabric device can work normally under deformation and show successful practical use in power electronics and sensing system, demonstrating great potential to serve as an advanced energy accessory for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Moist-electric generation as a green process of power generation can effectively solve energy and environmental problems. In order to improve the moist-electric properties of moist-electric generator (MEG), this study designed and prepared a sodium alginate (SA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) bilayer film hygroscopic generator with an asymmetric distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups (asym-SCM) by simple freeze-drying and pressing. The relative ratios of carbon and oxygen in the system were adjusted by changing the ratios of SA/MWCNT, and the advantages of constructing an asymmetric distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups on the moist-electrical properties of the material were verified. The asym-SCM MEG is able to draw moisture from the environment, generating an open circuit voltage up to ca. 0.65 V at low humidity (ca. 40%) and generating power continuously for up to 650 min. At 90% humidity, the asym-SCM MEG can achieve an output voltage of ca. 0.78 V, well above the power generation performance of most biomass materials moist-electric studies in the current phase. This MEG is green, biocompatible, biodegradable, promising to be used as a self-powered device for flexible wearable, biomedical and other applications.

Abstract:Harnessing energy from ubiquitous moisture is of intense interest because of its considerable potential in self‐powered wearable electronics. However, most existing moisture‐electric generators (MEGs) have poor output voltage, which limits application possibility. Herein, a novel moisture‐induced electric generator (MIEG) is successfully fabricated with highly‐efficient electric generation by simply bridging graphene oxide (GO) film and bilayer graphene oxide/graphite (GOGH) composite film by polyvinyl alcohol‐phosphoric acid electrolyte gel. GO film can effectively boost conductive ion diffusion in the electrolyte channel under moisture adsorption. While novel bilayer GOGH film enhances a potential between two electrodes and output results based on its hydrophilic GO layer and good conductive graphite layer. These availabilities result in an elevated voltage of 1.1V and a high current of 25.4 μA (254 μA.cm‐2), among the high‐level reported outputs. More excitingly, the device also extends without limit by integrating the MIEG cells into a series or parallel topology. As a breakthrough, MIEG is successfully used as a self‐powered wearable device by finger‐surface contact, proximity‐sensitive touchpads, and a human‐breathing transducer. This work not only opens a new futuristic clean power generation in moisture energy harvesting but also facilitates the development of new innovative, flexible electronics.

Abstract:A “moistelectric” nanogenerator based on gradient doped polypyrrole nanowire has been fabricated by concentration-controlled electro-deposition (CCED) technique. The specially designed composition and structure of the gradient doped polypyrrole nanowire endow it with huge surface area and one-dimensional transport nanochannels, which can largely facilitate the diffusion of water molecules to generate the dissociated charged ions as free carriers. For a polypyrrole nanowire with a diameter of 200 nm, it exhibits a high-output voltage in excess of 72 mV, a remarkable output current of 0.45 nA, and a maximum output power density of 103.13 mW cm−2 by area and 9.0 × 104 W kg−1 by mass under the ΔRH of 75%. On this basis, a vertically aligned gradient doped polypyrrole nanowire arrays show high current output of 0.14 μA without voltage drop. This work presents the first example that the power is gathered from moisture via polymer nanogenerators for energy-conversion application.
