Abstract:Cellulose hydrogels reveal potential application for oil-water emulsion separation. However, they still suffer from lower flux, resulting from their stable hydration layers. In this work, bacterial cellulose (BC)/cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) hydrogels were prepared via the immersion method. The hydrogels also showed good superhydrophilicity/underwater-superoleophobicity. They can separate oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions with separation efficiency > 97.6 %. More importantly, the addition of CNC improved the crystallinity of BC hydrogels and decreased the accessibility to water molecules, which increased the water flux of hydrogels. This work provides a feasible strategy to enhance the separation flowrate for oil-water emulsions.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with amphiphilic features were used in oil drop stabilization in diesel oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion. The functionalized CNCs were synthesized from a lignin-rich reject cellulose source from the pulp and paper industry, i.e., the non-bleached fines fractions of carton pulp. Partial periodate-chlorite oxidation, which was followed by reductive butylamination, was used to obtain surface-modified amphiphilic CNCs. All studied CNCs prevented droplet coalescence by stabilizing oil droplets in the emulsion thus resulting in stable o/w Pickering-like emulsions. CNCs from the fines fractions at concentrations 0.05–0.1% (weight by weight, w/w) provided high stability against creaming (i.e., phase separation), and they did not de-emulsify at low temperatures since the oil droplet size remained small at + 5 °C at a 0.05% (w/w) CNC concentration. Salinity improved the stability against creaming with the reference chemical pulp CNC, but negatively affected the emulsion creaming rate for CNCs that had a higher level of lignin. However, the non-bleached fines fraction of the pulp may provide one potential and cost-effective raw material source for the development of a novel bio-based chemical.

Abstract:The preparation and classification of nanocellulose are briefly introduced, and the modification of nanocellulose and the application of modified nanocellulose in oilfield chemistry are reviewed. The principles and methods of surface modification, including surface adsorption, oxidation, acetylation, silanization, etherification, and polymer grafting, are summarized. Meanwhile, this paper focuses on the application of nanocellulose research progress in drilling fluid, enhanced oil recovery, and oilfield sewage treatment. In addition, the application issues and natural advantages of nanocellulose are analyzed, and suggestions and ideas on how to expand its application are put forward. Finally, the development and potential application of nanocellulose in oilfield chemistry are proposed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibers have been widely applied in many fields because of its unique advantages. However, it is a challenge to prepare cellulose nanofibers by electrospinning directly owing to the special molecular structure of cellulose. This limits the practical applications of cellulose nanofibers. In this work, cellulose nanofibers were successfully prepared directly by design of new electrospinning receiving device and optimization of process parameters. The as-prepared cellulose nanofibers exhibit good oil-water separation performances. Driven solely by gravity, the separation flux of the cellulose nanofibers for mixture of oil and water reaches 34,300.6 L m-2 h-1, and the separation flux and efficiency for surfactant-stabilized emulsion of oil and water reach 2503.7 L m-2 h-1 and over 98.3%, respectively. The as-prepared cellulose nanofibers also exhibit good mechanical properties and reusability. The breaking strength of the cellulose nanofibers can reach 148.2 cN. The separation fluxes of cellulose nanofibers for mixtures and emulsions of oil and water can be maintained 99.7% and 86.3% of the initial value after being used for 20 times. Furthermore, the as-prepared cellulose nanofibers have good degradability. These properties render as-prepared cellulose nanofibers as promising materials with potential applications in oil-water separation.

Abstract:The massive discharge of oily wastewater and oil spills are causing serious pollution to water resources. It is urgent to require clean and efficient method of purifying oily emulsions. Although the separation membranes with selective wettability have been widely used in the efficient purification of oil/water emulsions. It is still very challenging to develop functional films that are environmentally friendly, fouling resistant, inexpensive, easy to prepare, easy to scale, and highly efficient. Cellulose nanocrystalline-based composite membranes (CCM) were prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SATRP) and vacuum self-assembly. The prepared CCM is superhydrophilic and superoleophobic underwater due to the hydrophilic nature of the modified cellulose-nanocrystalline and the micro-nano surface structure. The CCM shows high separation efficiency (> 99.9 %), high flux (16,692 L −1 ·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) for surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions, good cycle stability and anti-fouling performance. This biomass-derived membrane is green, cheap, easy to manufacture, scalable, super-wettability, and durability, it promises to be an alternative to separation membranes in today's market.

Abstract:Celery pomace (Rw), an agricultural residue, is a cellulose source for the separation of celery cellulose. Oxalic acid hydrolysis, followed by high pressure homogenization, was used to separate nanocellulose with aspect ratios of 63.8–171.7. Different sizes of celery cellulose were obtained, which were used as stabilizers for oil-in-water emulsions. The aspect ratio of nanocellulose significantly affected their emulsifying ability. With the change in the oil phase volume and solid content of celery nanocellulose, the surface coverage ratio of the emulsifying droplets increased from 0.2 to 8.1. In addition, the environmental factors, such as ionic strength, pH values, and temperature negligibly affected the stability of the emulsion. It shown that flexible celery cellulose played an important role in the stability of emulsion, and the higher concentration of cellulose improved the non-covalent "physical" cross-linking between molecules. The results suggest the possibility of using celery or other vegetables cellulose for stabilizing oil-in-water emulsions.

Abstract:In an effort to develop a membrane system with low cost and easy fabrication process for oil/water separation, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), chitin nanocrystals (ChiNC), and cationic guar gum (CGG) are used to prepare a complex membrane on top of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nonwoven fabric via a vacuum filtration method. The interactions among CNC, ChiNC, and CGG complexation are discussed, and the functionalization of the PET nonwoven fabric with these polysaccharide derivatives provides a high rate of water absorption and permeability on applying pressure. The morphology and wettability studies demonstrate that the as-prepared membrane has a porous structure and exhibits hydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. The results of separation experiments show that the membrane can effectively separate oil/water emulsions with a relatively high flux and rejection ratio. Abstract:Oil spill accidents and oily wastewater discharged by petrochemical industries have severely wasted water resources and damaged the environment. The use of special wetting materials to separate oil and water is efficient and environment-friendly. Cellulose is the most abundant renewable resource and has natural advantages in removing pollutants from oily wastewater. The application and modification of cellulose as special wetting materials have attracted considerable research attention. Therefore, we summarized cellulose-based superlipophilic/superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic/superoleophobic materials exhibiting special wetting properties for oil/water separation. The treatment mechanism, preparation technology, treatment effect, and representative projects of oil-bearing wastewater are discussed. Moreover, cellulose-based intelligent-responsive materials for application to oil/water separation and the removal of other pollutants from oily wastewater have also been summarized. The prospects and potential challenges of all the materials have been highlighted.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been growing interest in replacing petroleum-based water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifiers with sustainable and less toxic natural materials. Pickering emulsifiers are considered well-suited candidates due to their high interfacial activity and the ability to form emulsions with long-term stability. However, only sporadic examples of natural materials have been considered as inverse Pickering emulsifiers. This study describes the synthesis of a series of hydrophobic cellulose nanospheres by bulk modification with acyl groups of different chain lengths followed by nanoprecipitation, and their application as inverse emulsifiers. Modification with acyl groups of longer chain length (C16, C18) afforded lower degrees of substitution, but resulted in greater thermal stability than groups with shorter acyl chains (C12, C14). Formation of nanospheres with low aspect ratios and narrow size distributions required low initial cellulose concentrations ( 10:1), and slow addition rates (< 20 mL/h). The modified cellulose nanospheres were able to reduce the interfacial tension between water and hexane from 45.8 mN/m to 31.1 mN/m, with an effect that increased with the number of carbons in the added acyl chains. The stearate-modified nanospheres exhibited superhydrophobic behavior, showing a contact angle of 156° ± 4° with water, and demonstrated emulsification performance comparable to the commonly used molecular surfactant sorbitan stearate. Our findings suggest that hydrophobically modified cellulose nanospheres have the potential to be a bio-derived alternative to traditional molecular W/O emulsifiers.

Extraction of cellulose nanocrystalline from Camellia oleifera Abel waste shell: Study of critical processes, properties and enhanced emulsion performance

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) extracted from the waste shell of Camellia oleifera Abel (C. oleifera) are gaining attention as valuable materials. In this study, CNCs were extracted from the agricultural waste shell of C. oleifera through phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid hydrolysis, respectively. Firstly, we optimized the alkaline treatment process for cellulose isolation by using response surface methodology. Furthermore, the properties of CNCs were investigated by neutralizing them with NaOH and NH3·H2O, and by dialysis in water. In addition, the characterization methods including FT-IR, TGA, AFM and TEM were used to analysis the properties of the synthesized CNCs. Finally, CNCs were studied for their application in essential oil-based Pickering emulsions. CNCs obtained from sulfuric acid showed the smallest particle size and good dispersibility. Moreover, the release profiles of essential oils in the emulsions were followed by Peppa's kinetic release model. The antibacterial activity of the emulsions against E. coli and S. aureus showed that CNCs-stabilized emulsions enhanced the antibacterial activity of essential oils. Therefore, neutralization treatments may enhance the properties of CNCs, and CNCs stabilized Pickering emulsions can enhance antibacterial activity of essential oil. This study provides insight into the potential application of CNCs derived from C. oleifera waste shells.
Delignified wood with unprecedented anti-oil properties for the highly efficient separation of crude oil/water mixtures

Abstract:It remains a challenge to develop anti-oil fouling materials for crude oil spills or other oily wastewater cleanups. Herein, we report delignified wood with a cellulose coating for its excellent oil-repellent properties and efficient crude oil/water separation abilities. The delignified wood shows stable water binding affinity and an ultralow underwater adhesion force. It is not only useful for totally separating or collecting crude oil from oily wastewater with no decline in water permeation flux during long-term operation, but also shows good pH stability and high salt resistance. The excellent anti-oil properties originated from the chemical structure of cellulose, in which the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups are densely and symmetrically linked to the main chains. It is capable of being further improved with a cellulose coating fabricated from the hydrolysis of cellulose acetate. The cellulose coating allows the delignified wood to remove oil contamination from its surfaces both in a pre-hydration state and in a dry state while the nascent state only works well underwater because of remaining impurities, like lignin and hemicellulose. Our results demonstrate that the delignified wood and cellulose coating show great potential in the practical treatment of oily wastewater.
Incorporation of zwitterionic carbon quantum dots in cellulose acetate tubular membrane for oil/water separation

Abstract:The substantial generation of oily industrial wastewater poses a considerable environmental threat. A promising strategy for addressing this challenge involves employing ultrafiltration membranes integrated with a hydrophilic nanomaterial. This study aims to investigate the properties of zwitterionic carbon quantum dots (ZQDs) and enhance the performance of cellulose acetate (CA) tubular membranes by incorporating ZQDs. The CA tubular membrane was crafted using the dry-wet spinning method. The introduction of ZQDs into the CA casting solution disrupted its thermodynamic stability and expedited the non-solvent inflow rate during membrane formation, thereby augmenting both membrane porosity and pore size. The inclusion of ZQDs heightened the membrane's hydrophilicity owing to the presence of hydrophilic functional groups in the nanomaterial. The modified tubular membrane demonstrated high pure water and diesel oil-water emulsion permeate flux of 581.3 ± 33.9 L m −1 h −1 bar −1 and 350.5 ± 11.2 L m −1 h −1 bar −1 , respectively, with an impressive oil rejection rate of 98 %. The flux recovery and reversible fouling ratio increased to 88.42 % and 28.12 %, respectively, while the irreversible fouling ratio decreased to 11.57 %. The modified tubular membrane effectively rejected various oil-water emulsions (diesel oil, dodecane, canola oil, and engine oil) with a separation efficiency ranging from 94 % to 99 %. In conclusion, the zwitterionic-modified tubular membrane proved to be effective in the separation of oil and water.

Abstract:Membrane separation is an appropriate method for the treatment of emulsified wastewater. But emulsified wastewater always contains oil droplets with a broad size distribution, and the tiny oil droplets can easily intrude into the pore of membranes during the separation process, which can cause internal fouling of membranes. Reducing the pore size can alleviate this fouling, however, the strategy may cause a decline in flux. Therefore, a more efficient strategy should be proposed. Herein, modified nylon mesh with well mechanical properties and low crude-oil adhesion was chosen for crude-oil/water emulsion. Before the sieve separation, a preprocessing strategy of squeezing coalescence is applied to the emulsion, resulting in the preprocessed emulsion with large and homogeneous crude-oil droplets. And the preprocessed emulsion can be continuously and efficiently separated by the sieving membrane. Compared with directly separating the original emulsion, separating the preprocessed emulsion can prolong the service life of the sieving membrane. The prepared modified nylon mesh and the coupling of the squeezing coalescence process and the sieving process have the practical application value for industrial crude-oil/water emulsion separation.

Abstract:With the increase in global fossil fuel consumption and growing demand for sustainability, the advancement of novel technologies and green materials in the oil and gas industry are becoming critically essential. Given the merits of abundance, cost-effectiveness, and renewability, together with high specific surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and exceptional mechanical, barrier, thermal and rheological properties, cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) have received enormous interest in oil and gas industry, in an effort to make the oil and gas development more efficient and environmentally-friendly. In particular, three families of CNMs, i.e., cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and bacterial cellulose (BC), can be produced via a series of top-down and bottom-up strategies. Lignocellulosic nanomaterials, i.e., lignocellulosic nanofibers (LCNFs) and lignocellulosic nanocrystals (LCNCs), exhibit similar morphology with CNMs, but some tiny globular-shaped lignin nanoparticles can be retained in similarly production to CNMs. Due to the variation in production approaches and parameters, CNMs exhibit distinctive morphology, crystallinity and surface chemistry, leading to different final product performance. Herein, the classification, production, and properties of CNMs are summarized, aiming to provide a better understanding of the production-structure-property relationships and thus make it possible to more efficiently use CNMs in the oil and gas industry. Then, we overview the recent advances of CNMs in three major sectors of oil and gas industry, i.e., i) upstream - exploration and production, ii) midstream - transportation and storage, and iii) downstream - refining and purifying. Finally, the opportunities, challenges, as well as future perspectives of CNMs and their application in oil and gas industry are outlined.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is usually a troublesome issue in oily water treatment, especially containing complex crude oil emulsions. Although most of the reported membranes are in a position to repel models oils, it’s still a big challenge of repelling crude oil. Besides, the fabrication processes of those membranes are too complicated, high-cost and environmentally unfriendly. Hence, in this work, a facile and green method was designed to fabricate a Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) polyelectrolyte filtration membrane with excellent underwater superoleophobic characteristic and outstanding antifouling performance. The membrane not only can separate oil/water emulsions with a high separation efficiency (>99%) and water flux (>11,000 L m−2 h−1), but also remove positively charged dyes with good permeation fluxes (>10,000L m−2 h−1) and rejection radio (>98%). Herein, it can be anticipated that this method has excellent potential for designing and preparing the specific membranes for multifunctional applications in water treatment.

Abstract:Nano-particles can localize at oil–water (O/W) interface, reduce residual oil saturation, increase the viscosity of brine and decrease the viscosity of crude oil emulsion. However, cost and environmental concerns have limited field application of inorganic, metal and metal oxides nano-particles. In this study, ascorbic acid was used for the first time to synthesize cellulose nano-particles (CNP) extracted from okra mucilage. The physical properties of the CNP including their size distribution and crystalline structures were investigated by transmission electron microscope, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The rheological properties of the cellulose nano-fluid (CNF) were compared with the bulk okra mucilage and commercial polymer xanthan. The interfacial properties of the CNF at the interface of the O/W system were investigated at different concentrations and temperatures. The effect of the interaction between electrolyte and ultrasonic was determined. The combined method of ultrasonic, weak acid hydrolysis and nano-precipitation was effective in producing rod-like and polygonal nano-particles with a mean diameter of 100 nm, increased yield of 51% and preserved crystallinity, respectively. The zeta potential result showed that the CNF is stable, and the surface charge signifies long-term stability of the fluid when injected into oil field reservoirs. From the experimental results, concentration, particle morphology and the surface charge of the solutions were the contributing factors that influenced the rheology of the system. The CNF, okra and xanthan exhibited shear-thinning and pseudo-plastic behavior. The R2 value for the model is very close to unity, indicating that the power-law model describes nearly perfectly the rheological behavior. The consistency index increased as the flow behavior indices decreased with the increase in the concentration. The interfacial tension (IFT) decreased with the increase in concentration of CNF, electrolyte and temperature. Temperature, concentration of CNF and electrolyte were the main factors that influenced the IFT reduction. The results show that investing in ultrasonic-assisted weak acid hydrolysis is easier, cost-effective and can reduce energy consumption making the method economically advantageous compared to conventional methods. The characteristic properties of the CNF suggest that it has potentials to be used to recover trapped oil from pores of reservoirs.

Abstract:Sulfated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with high surface charge density are inadequate for stabilizing oil-water emulsions, which limits their applications as interfacial stabilizers. We performed end-group modification by introducing hydrophobic chains (polystyrene) to CNC. Results showed that the modified CNC are more effective in emulsifying toluene and hexadecane than pristine CNC. Various parameters were investigated, such as concentration of particles, electrolytes, and polarity of solvents on the characteristics of the emulsions. This study provides strategies for the modification of cellulose nanocrystals to yield amphiphilic nanoparticles that enhance the stability of emulsions. Such systems, bearing biocompatible and environmentally friendly characteristics, are attractive for use in a wide range of industries spanning food, biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and petrochemicals.

Abstract:For the past few years, superwetting materials had been developed to enhance the treatment process of oily wastewater. Membranes are improved through the combination of surface topography and chemical modifications to achieve superwetting properties for treating oily wastewater effectively. In this work, we prepared an eco-friendly membrane by depositing sodium lignosulfonate (SLS)-modified carbon nanotube (CNT) on a cellulose acetate membrane via vacuum filtration without employing any organic solvents. The membrane shows superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity with high stability. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits outstanding antifouling and self-cleaning properties against crude oil of high viscosity. Most importantly, our membrane exhibits outstanding oil-in-water emulsions separation performances including crude oil-in-water emulsions. For the surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized emulsions, fluxes were revealed to reach up to 27,800 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and 13,800 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , respectively, with very high separation efficiency (>99.97 % and 99.79 %, respectively). The distinguished performance of our membrane, and its eco-friendly, low-energy consumption, and cost-effective preparation, demonstrate practical applicability.

Abstract:Separating films with both high efficiency and large flux are desperately needed to meet the rising demand for the treatment of oily wastewater, while traditional oil/water separation papers with high separation efficiency usually suffered from low flux due to the unsuitable size of filtration pores. Herein, we report a bio-based porous, superhydrophobic, and antimicrobial hybrid cellulose paper with tunable porous structures for high flux oil/water separation. The size of pores in the hybrid paper can be tuned by both physical supports provided by the chitosan fibers and the chemical shielding supplied by the hydrophobic modification. The hybrid paper with increased porosity (20.73 μm; 35.15 %) and excellent antibacterial properties can efficiently separate a wide range of oil/water mixtures, solely by gravity, with outstanding flux (maximum of 23,692.69 L m −2 h −1 ), tiny oil interception, and high efficiency of over 99 %. This work provides new sights in the development of durable and low-cost functional papers for rapid and efficient oil/water separation.

Abstract:In a rapidly growing world, petroleum is used extensively in various industries, and the extraction, processing, and transportation of petroleum generates large amounts of petroleum-containing wastewater. Conventional oil/water separation methodologies are often ineffective and costly. Nanocellulose-based aerogels (NA) have emerged as a possible solution to this problem. However, hydrophobic modification is required for effective use in oil/water separation. This review on materials commonly used in these processes and outlines the requirements for adsorbent materials and methods for creating unique lipophilic surfaces. New trends in hydrophobization methods for NA are also discussed. Additionally, it includes the development of composite nanocellulose aerogels (CNAs) and cellulose based membrane specially developed for oil/water (o/w) separation considering different separation requirements. This analysis also examines how CNAs have evolved by introducing special properties that facilitate oil collection or make the adsorbent recyclable. We also discuss the difficulties in creating effective NAs for these important applications in a changing society, as well as the difficulties in creating oil recovery equipment for oil spill cleanup.
