Abstract:The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is regarded as a promising route for renewable energy conversion and storage, but its development is limited by the high overpotential and low stability and selectivity of electrocatalysts. Moreover, it is complicated to accurately adjust the nanostructure of electrocatalysts, which impacts repeatability. Herein, we propose the rational design and controlled preparation of ultrafine Ag nanodots decorated fish-scale-like Zn nanoleaves (Ag-NDs/Zn-NLs) for highly selective electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. The Ag-NDs/Zn-NLs can be in-situ grown on copper foil with simple electrodeposition and replacement reactions. Benefiting from the coordination and synergistic effect of Zn and Ag species, the reconstruction of Zn surface and the agglomeration of Ag-NDs are efficiently prevented, bringing high activity and durable electrocatalytic stability for CO2-to-CO conversion. The Faradaic efficiency for CO production reaches 85.2% at a moderate applied potential of -1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). This study provides a promising approach for controlling the catalytic activity and selectivity of CO2RR through the structural adjustment and decoration of transition metal based nanocatalysts.
Superaerophilic Copper Nanowires for Efficient and Switchable CO2 Electroreduction.

Abstract:Copper is one of the most efficient electrocatalysts for switchable carbon dioxide conversion, but the design of an advanced Cu-based catalyst with high selectivity while suppressing hydrogen evolution remains a great challenge. Herein, we use Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) as the starting materials and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as the surface modifier to make a superaerophilic electrode using a wettability control strategy. This strategy allows tuning of the selectivity of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and a decrease of the hydrogen evolution rate simultaneously by facilitating the supply of CO2 reactants and inhibiting the adsorption of water (protons). The transferring point from a pinning to bursting state turned out to be the optimized condition leading to the highest CO2RR faradaic efficiency without significant interference of current density. The optimized superaerophilic Cu NW catalyst showed CO-selectivity with a Faraday efficiency of 71% at -0.4 V vs. RHE and HCOOH-selectivity with a Faraday efficiency of 68% at -0.6 V vs. RHE. Moreover, the accelerated gas and ion diffusion and homogenized reactions also avoided accumulative damage on the surface of the Cu NWs and enhanced the stability of the Cu catalyst. This wettability tuning strategy provides a facile and efficient way to optimize the gas and ion diffusion layers, therefore promoting the performance of the CO2RR. This strategy potentially can be extended to the design of other gas consumption electrocatalysts.

Abstract:An efficient and selective catalyst is in urgent need for carbon dioxide electroreduction and silver is one of the promising candidates with affordable costs. Here we fabricated large-scale vertically standing Ag nanowire arrays with high crystallinity and electrical conductivity as carbon dioxide electroreduction catalysts by a simple nanomolding method that was usually considered not feasible for metallic crystalline materials. A great enhancement of current densities and selectivity for CO at moderate potentials was achieved. The current density for CO ( jco) of Ag nanowire array with 200 nm in diameter was more than 2500 times larger than that of Ag foil at an overpotential of 0.49 V with an efficiency over 90%. The origin of enhanced performances are attributed to greatly increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and higher intrinsic activity compared to those of polycrystalline Ag foil. More low-coordinated sites on the nanowires which can stabilize the CO2 intermediate better are responsible for the high intrinsic activity. In addition, the impact of surface morphology that induces limited mass transportation on reaction selectivity and efficiency of nanowire arrays with different diameters was also discussed.

Abstract:Silver electrocatalysts offer the possibility to produce CO by converting CO2, enabling the use of a greenhouse gas as chemical building block. Compared to nanoparticles, silver nanowires show an enhanced selectivity towards CO. Recent publications proved that oxide‐derived electrocatalysts can exhibit better catalytic performance than the pristine metal phase, but oxide‐derived silver nanowires have not been investigated. In this work, we report for the first time the electrocatalytic properties of silver nanowires, synthesized via the polyol method, and pretreated by electrochemical oxidation in basic electrolyte. By increasing the oxidation potential, both the percentage of AgxO and the surface roughness of the catalyst were progressively increased. The most oxidized sample showed a remarkably improved CO selectivity (‐294.2 mA m‐2Ag), producing a 3.3‐fold larger CO partial current density than the pristine sample (‐89.4 mA m‐2Ag), normalized by electrochemically active silver surface area. This work demonstrates the beneficial effect of the controlled oxidation treatment even on highly selective nanostructures such as silver nanowires.

Abstract:Silver-containing material is one of the efficient electrocatalysts in converting CO2 into CO, but competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous solutions results in poor energy efficiency. Here, Ag-3 subnanoclusters with the structure sensitive to CO2 activation are in situ prepared by the cyclohexene oxidation. Hydrophobically modified Ag nanomaterials with an average particle size from 1.0 to 3.3 nm are waterrepulsive, organic-soluble, and composited of the Ag-3 cluster units, possessing the electron donation and strong chemical adsorption of CO2. In the electroreduction of CO2, a high mass activity about 10,200 A cm(-2) g(A)(g)(-1) is achieved for CO production at -1.4 V vs. reverse hydrogen electrode (RHE) on Ag nanoclusters with the external size of 1.9 nm, exhibiting 20 times higher than commercial Ag nanoparticles (diameters of 60-120 nm). Electrochemical tests in flow cells show an excellent mass activity of 55,000 A cm(-2) g(Ag)(-1) with a large current density of around 30 mA cm(-2) for the CO production at -0.71 V vs. RHE, much higher than the previously reported Ag catalysts. Hydrophobically made Ag-3 subnanoclusters facilitate the CO2 electroreduction to CO in aqueous solutions through accelerating the electron donation and suppressing the side reaction of water reduction.

Abstract:Silver (Ag) is a typical catalyst for CO2 electroreduction. To improve the CO faradaic efficiency, ZIF-8 supported thiol-capped Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of about 3.9 nm were facilely synthesized by reducing Ag + in ZIF-8 suspension in the presence of thiol-containing mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) molecules. MPA can induce the monodisperse Ag NPs formation, cap on the surface of Ag NPs and immobilize on ZIF-8 through coordinating with the unsaturated Zn 2+ cations. The Ag/ZIF-8 can efficiently reduce CO2 to CO with a maximum CO faradaic efficiency of 92.3% at the potential of −0.88 V (vs. RHE), higher than that of ZIF-8 and Ag/C. The performance improvement in CO2 electroreduction over Ag/ZIF-8 is probably attributed to the small-size of Ag NPs and the synergistic effect between Ag NPs and ZIF-8.

Abstract:The advancement of cost-effective and selective electrocatalyst towards CO2 to CO conversion is crucial for renewable energy conversion and storage, thus to achieve carbon-neutral cycle in a sustainable manner. In this communication, we report that Cu2Sb decorated Cu nanowire arrays on Cu foil act as a highly active and selective electrocatalyst for CO2 to CO conversion. In CO2-saturated 0.1 M KHCO3, it achieves a high Faraday efficiency (FE) of 86.5% for CO, at −0.90 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The H2/CO ratio is tunable from 0.08:1 to 5.9:1 by adjusting the potential. It is worth noting that HCOO− product was totally suppressed on such catalyst, compared with Sb counterpart. The improving selectivity for CO could be attributed to the bimetallic effect and nanowire arrays structure.

Abstract:Abstract Efficient conversion of CO 2 to commodity chemicals by sustainable way is of great significance for achieving carbon neutrality. Although considerable progress has been made in CO 2 utilization, highly efficient CO 2 conversion with high space velocity under mild conditions remains a challenge. Here, we report a hierarchical micro/nanostructured silver hollow fiber electrode that reduces CO 2 to CO with a faradaic efficiency of 93% and a current density of 1.26 A · cm −2 at a potential of −0.83 V vs . RHE. Exceeding 50% conversions of as high as 31,000 mL · g cat −1 · h −1 CO 2 are achieved at ambient temperature and pressure. Electrochemical results and time-resolved operando Raman spectra demonstrate that enhanced three-phase interface reactions and oriented mass transfers synergistically boost CO production.

Abstract:N‐doped carbon nanotubes supported Ag single atoms and Ag atomic clusters catalyst is designed to exhibit excellent electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction activity in a flow cell. In situ synchrotron infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that turning Ag single atoms into Ag clusters resulted in electron density accumulation between Ag cluster and *COOH, thus accelerating the *COOH massive formation. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (eCO2RR) that exclusively produces one product at industrial current density is crucial for the substantial storage of renewable energy. Modulating the electronic structure of atomically dispersed catalysts can effectively regulate the adsorption of rate‐determining‐step intermediates to achieve the desired products. Here, the study constructs a hybrid catalyst consisting of single Ag atoms and Ag atomic clusters supported on nitrogen‐doped multi‐walled carbon nanotubes that can effectively regulate the important intermediate structure of *COOH. The X‐ray photoelectron and X‐ray absorption near‐edge spectroscopies demonstrate that turning Ag single atoms into Ag clusters can weaken the electron transfer between Ag–N and present a relatively rich electron state. Thus, the rate‐determining step of *COOH massive formation is significantly accelerated, as proven by in situ synchrotron infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Using this strategy, a CO Faradaic efficiency outperforming 99% from −0.3 to −0.8 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) with current densities above 200 mA cm−2 and a half‐cell energetic efficiency of 86% is achieved. This work highlights a promising approach to advancing synergistic catalysts for achieving more controllable and efficient eCO2RR.

Abstract:Highly efficient CO2 electroreduction is achieved over silver penetration electrode based on the synergetic combination of the unique penetration effect as well as the tuned electronic structure by reconstructed nanosheet‐standing shell, with a high CO faradaic efficiency of 97% at an ultra‐high current density of 2.0 A cm−2 and sustained performance for continuously >200 h operation. Electroreduction of CO2 to CO is a promising route for greenhouse gas resource utilization, but it still suffers from impractical current density and poor durability. Here, a nanosheet shell (NS) vertically standing on the Ag hollow fiber (NS@Ag HF) surface formed by electrochemical surface reconstruction is reported. As‐prepared NS@Ag HF as a gas penetration electrode exhibited a high CO faradaic efficiency of 97% at an ultra‐high current density of 2.0 A cm−2 with a sustained performance for continuous >200 h operation. The experimental and theoretical studies reveal that promoted surface electronic structures of NS@Ag HF by the nanosheets not only suppress the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction but also facilitate the CO2 reduction kinetics. This work provides a feasible strategy for fabricating robust catalysts for highly efficient and stable CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR) have been recognized as a promising solution to environmental and energy problems due to their ability to convert intermittent renewable electricity into hydrocarbon fuels and value-added chemicals. Copper has a unique ability to electrochemically reduce CO2 to produce C2+ hydrocarbon products compared to other metals. However, it is still suffering from low Faraday efficiency (FE) limitation for specific products. Herein, we have prepared an Ag-modified Cu/CuO-Ag catalyst with a porous structure via a galvanic replacement reaction method, which reduced CO2 to C2+ products with a FE of 52.5% at -1.1V (vs RHE). The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the addition of Ag in Cu is beneficial to increasing the coverage of *CO on the Cu surface, which can decrease the potential barrier energy of the C-C coupling reaction and favor the generation of C2+ products. The results of this study may be helpful to the design of efficient tandem catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction (CO2RR) has been recognized as an efficient way to mitigate CO2 emissions and alleviate the pressure on global warming and associated environmental consequences. Gold (Au) is reported as stable and active electrocatalysts to convert CO2 to CO at low overpotential due to its moderate adsorption strength of *COOH and *CO. The request for improved catalytic performance, however, is motivated by current unsatisfied catalytic selectivity because of the side hydrogen evolution reaction. In this context, the design of Au based binary catalysts that can boost CO selectivity is of great interest. In the present work, we report that Au nanoparticles can be feasibly dispersed and anchored on silicon nanowires to form Au-Si binary nanomaterials. The Au-Si may stably drive CO2RR with a CO Faraday efficiency of 95.6% at −0.6 V vs. RHE in 0.5 mol/L KHCO3 solution. Such selectivity outperforms Au particles by up to 61%. Controlled experiments illustrate that such catalytic enhancement can chiefly be ascribed to electronic effects of binary catalysts. Theoretical calculations reveal that spontaneously produced silicon oxide may not only inhibit hydrogen evolution reaction, but also stabilize the key intermediate *COOH in CO formation.

Abstract:Silver (Ag) is one of the widely investigated catalysts for CO2 electroreduction. To improve the faradaic efficiency for CO production over Ag catalysts, many efforts have been devoted to tuning the size and morphology of Ag catalysts, using Ag-containing complex compounds or ionic liquid electrolyte. Herein, we report a strategy to enhance CO2 electroreduction by constructing a Ag2O/layered zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) composite structure via one-pot hydrothermal treatment of ZIF-7 nanoparticles (NPs) in AgNO3 aqueous solution. The Ag2O/layered ZIF shows much higher CO faradaic efficiency and current density than the layered ZIF or Ag/C alone. The performance improvement in CO2 electroreduction over the Ag2O/layered ZIF is probably attributed to the synergistic effect between Ag2O NPs and the layered ZIF, as well as facilitated mass transport due to the high specific surface area of the Ag2O/layered ZIF.

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is regarded as an effective strategy to store abundant renewable energy and build a carbon neutral society. Gold (Au) and silver (Ag)-based catalysts for the effective electrochemical transformation of CO2 to CO emerge as promising candidates. Heterogeneous nanocomposites composed of noble metals and semiconductors exhibit great potential for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction through the electronic coupling effect at coherent interfaces. Herein, we successfully synthesize heterogeneous Ag2S-Au composite nanoparticles (NPs) as effective catalysts for CO production through CO2RR. At −0.8 V vs RHE, the heterogeneous Ag2S-Au nanocatalysts display a considerable CO Faradaic efficiency of 94.5%, and an appreciable CO partial current density of 9.17 mA cm−2. Moreover, they exhibit good stability for 30 h without obvious decrease. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it can be made clear that the heterogeneous Ag2S-Au interface is energetically more beneficial to the generation of COOH* intermediate for CO2RR. Molten-salt-assisted synthesis of single-atom iron confined N-doped carbon nanosheets for highly efficient industrial-level CO2 electroreduction and Zn-CO2 batteries

Abstract:The development of convenient and highly efficient synthetic route to fabricate single-atom catalysts anchored on N-doped carbon nanosheets remains a big challenge for CO2 electrochemical reduction (CO2RR). Herein, we develop a one-step molten-salt-assisted synthesis combined with temperature-programmed thermal activation method to fabricate Fe single-atom supported on N-doped carbon nanosheets (FeNC NSs) for CO2RR. In a flow cell, CO partial current density of FeNC NSs-1000 up to 147.9 mA cm-2 at -0.66 V with a high turnover fre-quency above 1 x 105 h-1 is achieved. Experimental results reveal that the active site was the center Fe atom coordinated with four N atoms, accelerating the formation of *COOH intermediate and thus accounts for its superior CO2-CO conversion activity. Theoretical calculations further manifest that the pyrrolic N in second coordination sphere reduces the energy barrier of rate-limiting step and promotes the electron transfer capacity. Moreover, the FeNC NSs-1000 is applied as cathode to rechargeable Zn-CO2 battery, exhibiting high CO selec-tivity and superior stability.

Abstract:The production of value-added chemicals from CO 2 electroreduction, using renewable energy, provides an appealing route to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Challenges remain in designing and understanding of high-performance catalyst with restructuring-behavior under electrochemical conditions. Here, we demonstrate the intrinsic performance enhancement of an Au-complex derived carbon nanotube supported Au nanoclusters catalyst for CO 2 reduction. Such catalyst exhibits the impressive activity for yielding CO in both H-cell and flow cell reactors. Our experimental results reveal that the synthesis procedure via metal complex reconstructing on proper support would induce charge transfer between Au nanoclusters and carbon nanotubes, forming a rather electron-rich state for Au active sites, that greatly contributes to the CO 2 activation pathway.
