Abstract:An active crack turn algorithm is proposed in this study. By placing a crack absorption hole in front of a patch, the crack could turn by a relatively large angle and, therefore, extend the residual life of the plate. Therefore, critical components behind the patch could also be protected as the crack changed its path. Crack propagation was performed based on the finite element analysis software ABAQUS and FRANC3D. The effect of the location and size of single holes on the stress concentration and crack growth path of the repaired structure was studied using the finite element method. The stress influence coefficient was introduced to characterise the strength of the "attraction" effect of the stress at the edge of the hole on the crack growth path. The results indicate that the existence of the hole results in crack deflection towards the hole and decreases the crack growth rate. We demonstrated that parameters could increase the crack deflection angle include the relative hole radius of approximately 2%, relative vertical distance of approximately 4% and relative horizontal distance of approximately 16%.
