Abstract:A nonlinear stochastic optimal control method is proposed based on the stochastic dynamical programming principle and an averaging method which is based on generalized harmonic function. The proposed method can be used to design optimal control law to minimize the response of SDOF strongly non-linear vibration systems under wide-band excitation. The Ito stochastic differential equation of displacement magnitude is obtained by using the averaging method. The dynamical programming equation for minimizing the response of the system is formulated by using the stochastic dynamical programming principle. The optimal control law is derived from dynamical programming equation and the bounded control constraints condition. The response of the controlled system is obtained by solving FPK equation. An example is given in details to illustrate the proposed control method.

Abstract:The semi-infinite time optimal control for a class of stochastically excited Markovian jump nonlinear system is investigated. Using stochastic averaging, each form of the system is reduced to a one-dimensional partially averaged Itô equation of total energy. A finite set of coupled dynamical programming equations is then set up based on the stochastic dynamical programming principle and Markovian jump rules, from which the optimal control force is obtained. The stationary response of the optimally controlled system is predicted by solving the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equation associated with the fully averaged Itô equation. Two examples are worked out in detail to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging technique for resonant and non-resonant quasi linear systems subject to multi-time-delayed feedback control and wide-band random excitation is developed. The technique is then applied to predict the response of one and two degree-of-freedom linear oscillators with nonlinear dampings subject to wide-band random excitations and multi-time-delayed feedback control. It is shown through comparison with the result from Monte Carlo simulation that the proposed technique yields quite a good result, even for long delay time, and that the time-delayed feedback control may result in phenomenological bifurcation.

Abstract:The response control of nonlinear random dynamical systems is an important but also difficult subject in scientific and industrial fields. This work merges the decomposition technique of feedback control and the data-driven identification method of stationary response probability density, converts the constrained functional extreme value problem associated with optimal control to an unconstrained optimization problem of multivariable function, and determines the optimal coefficients of preselected control terms by an optimization algorithm. This data-driven method avoids the difficulty of solving the stochastic dynamic programming equation or forward–backward stochastic differential equations encountered in classical control theories, the miss of the conservative mechanism in the nonlinear stochastic optimal control strategy, and the difficulty of judging the integrability and resonance of the controlled Hamiltonian systems encountered in the direct-control method. The application and efficacy of the data-driven method are illustrated by the random response control problems of the Duffing oscillator, van der Pol system, and a two degrees-of-freedom nonlinear system.

Abstract:Purpose This manuscript devotes to procedures to evaluate random responses and explore stochastic optimal control for a vibro-impact system, in which the inelastic impact is modeled as Hertzdamp contact model. Methods The dimension of governing equation is halved with respect to the total energy of uncontrolled/controlled system by conducting the stochastic averaging of energy envelope. The stationary probability density and then the response statistics of the uncontrolled system are much easier to solve due to a low-dimensional Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation. The original optimal control problem with respect to states of system is converted to that with respect to system total energy. The latter is quite simpler than the former although it only can be regarded as the suboptimal control of the original system. The optimal control with damping property is determined by adopting the stochastic maximum principle and solving simultaneously a set of forward-backward stochastic differential equations. Results The accuracy of the proposed procedure for evaluation of the random response is verified by comparing with Monte-Carlo simulations and the efficiency of the optimal control strategy is also illustrated. Conclusions The consistence between the analytical result from energy dissipative balance technique and that from stochastic averaging of energy envelope is discussed, which means the rigorous restriction on stochastic averaging, i.e., light damping and weak excitation, can be removed. The optimal control strategy from stochastic maximum principle and that from stochastic dynamic programming principle holds close connection based on our related discussion.

Abstract:Optimal control for improving the stability and reliability of nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems is of great significance for enhancing system performances. However, it has not been adequately investigated because the evaluation indicators for stability (e.g. maximal Lyapunov exponent) and for reliability (e.g. mean first-passage time) cannot be explicitly expressed as the functions of system states. Here, a unified procedure is established to derive optimal control strategies for improving system stability and reliability, in which a physical intuition-inspired separation technique is adopted to split feedback control forces into conservative components and dissipative components, the stochastic averaging is then utilized to express the evaluation indicators of performances of controlled system, the optimal control strategies are finally derived by minimizing the performance indexes constituted by the sigmoid function of maximal Lyapunov exponent (for stability-based control)/the reciprocal of mean first-passage time (for reliability-based control), and the mean value of quadratic form of control force. The unified procedure converts the original functional extreme problem of optimal control into an extremum value problem of multivariable function which can be solved by optimization algorithms. A numerical example is worked out to illustrate the efficacy of the optimal control strategies for enhancing system performance.

Abstract:A bounded optimal control strategy for strongly non-linear systems under non-white wide-band random excitation with actuator saturation is proposed. First, the stochastic averaging method is introduced for controlled strongly non-linear systems under wide-band random excitation using generalized harmonic functions. Then, the dynamical programming equation for the saturated control problem is formulated from the partially averaged Itô equation based on the dynamical programming principle. The optimal control consisting of the unbounded optimal control and the bounded bang-bang control is determined by solving the dynamical programming equation. Finally, the response of the optimally controlled system is predicted by solving the reduced Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equation associated with the completed averaged Itô equation. An example is given to illustrate the proposed control strategy. Numerical results show that the proposed control strategy has high control effectiveness and efficiency and the chattering is reduced significantly comparing with the bang-bang control strategy.

Abstract:A nonlinear stochastic optimal control strategy for single degree-of-freedom viscoelastic system with actuator saturation is proposed based on the stochastic averaging method and stochastic dynamical programing principle. First, the viscoelastic system is converted into an equivalent nonlinear non-viscoelastic system by replacing the viscoelastic force with amplitude-dependent stiffness and damping. Second, the partially averaged Itô stochastic differential equation for total system energy as one-dimensional controlled diffusion process is derived by using the stochastic averaging method of energy envelope. For the semi-infinite time-interval ergodic control, the dynamical programming equation is established by applying the stochastic dynamical programming principle to the partially averaged Itô equation with a performance index. The optimal saturated control consisting of unbounded optimal control and bang-bang control is determined by solving the dynamical programming equation. Both the analytical and simulation results verify the higher efficiency and chattering attenuation of the proposed control strategy compared with the corresponding bang-bang control.

Abstract:Due to the great progresses in the fields of smart structures, especially smart soft materials and structures, the parametric control of nonlinear systems attracts extensive attentions in scientific and industrial communities. This paper devotes to the derivation of the optimal parametric control strategy for nonlinear random vibrating systems, in which the excitations are confined to Gaussian white noises. For a prescribed performance index balancing the control performance and control cost, the stochastic dynamic programming equation with respect to the value function is first derived by the principle of dynamic programming. The optimal feedback control law is established according to the extremum condition. The explicit expression of the value function is determined by approximately expressing as a quadratic function of state variables and by solving the final dynamic programming equation. The application and efficacy of the optimal parametric control are illustrated by a random-excited Duffing oscillator and a dielectric elastomer balloon with random pressure. The numerical results show that the optimal parameter control possesses good effectiveness, high efficiency, and high robustness to excitation intensity, and is superior than the associated optimal bounded parametric control.

Abstract:A new procedure for designing optimal bounded control of stochastically excited multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) nonlinear viscoelastic systems is proposed based on the stochastic averaging method and the stochastic maximum principle. First, the system is formulated as a quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system with viscoelastic terms and each viscoelastic term is replaced approximately by an elastically restoring force and a visco-damping force based on the randomly periodic behavior of the motion of quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system. Thus, a stochastically excited MDOF nonlinear viscoelastic system is converted to an equivalent quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system without viscoelastic terms. Then, by applying stochastic averaging, the system is further reduced to a partially averaged system of less dimension. The adjoint equation and maximum condition for the optimal control problem of the partially averaged system are derived by using the stochastic maximum principle, and the optimal bounded control force is determined from the maximum condition. Finally, the probability and statistics of the stationary response of optimally controlled system are obtained by solving the Fokker–Plank–Kolmogorov equation (FPK) associated with the fully averaged Itô equation of the controlled system. An example is worked out to illustrate the proposed procedure and its effectiveness.

Abstract:Acceleration parametrical excitations have not been taken into account due to the lack of physical significance in macroscopic structures. The explosive development of microtechnology and nanotechnology, however, motivates the investigation of the acceleration parametrically excited systems. The adsorption and desorption effects dramatically change the mass of nano-sized structures, which significantly reduces the precision of nanoscale sensors or can be reasonably utilised to detect molecular mass. This manuscript proposes a non-linear stochastic optimal control strategy for stochastic systems with acceleration parametric excitation based on stochastic averaging of energy envelope and stochastic dynamic programming principle. System acceleration is approximately expressed as a function of system displacement in a short time range under the conditions of light damping and weak excitations, and the acceleration parametrically excited system is shown to be equivalent to a constructed system with an additional displacement parametric excitation term. Then, the controlled system is converted into a partially averaged Itô equation with respect to the total system energy through stochastic averaging of energy envelope, and the optimal control strategy for the averaged system is derived from solving the associated dynamic programming equation. Numerical results for a controlled Duffing oscillator indicate the efficacy of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging technique is proposed to study the randomly excited single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) strongly nonlinear systems with delayed feedback fractional-order proportional-derivative (PD) controller. The delayed feedback fractional-order PD control force is approximated by an equivalent non-delay feedback control force combining with a quasi-linear elastic force and a quasi-linear damping force. The averaged Itô stochastic differential equation for amplitude of the equivalent nonlinear system is derived by the generalized harmonic functions. The analytical stationary probability density function (PDF) is obtained with solving the reduced Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equation. Two examples of van der Pol oscillator and Rayleigh-Duffing oscillator are studied to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed method. Numerical results display that the proposed method can yield to the high precision, and the time delay could ruin the control effectiveness, but also even amplifies the response of the system more than that of uncontrolled system. Furthermore, the study finds that the parameters of fractional-order α and time delay may cause the stochastic P-bifurcation. It is indicated that the delayed feedback fractional-order PD controller can offer a potentially effective tool for anti-control of stochastic bifurcation

Abstract:A probability-weighted optimal control strategy for nonlinear stochastic vibrating systems with random time delay is proposed. First, by modeling the random delay as a finite state Markov process, the optimal control problem is converted into the one of Markov jump systems with finite mode. Then, upon limiting averaging principle, the optimal control force is approximately expressed as probability-weighted summation of the control force associated with different modes of the system. Then, by using the stochastic averaging method and the dynamical programming principle, the control force for each mode can be readily obtained. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control, the stochastic optimal control of a two degree-of-freedom nonlinear stochastic system with random time delay is worked out as an example.

Abstract:A strategy is proposed based on the stochastic averaging method for quasi non-integrable Hamiltonian systems and the stochastic dynamical programming principle. Abstract:A strategy for non-linear stochastic optimal control of strongly non-linear systems subject to external and/or parametric excitations of bounded noise is proposed. Abstract:We studied the response of harmonically and stochastically excited strongly nonlinear oscillators with delayed feedback bang-bang control using the stochastic averaging method. First, the time-delayed feedback bang-bang control force is expressed approximately in terms of the system state variables without time delay. Then the averaged Itô stochastic differential equations for the system are derived using the stochastic averaging method. Finally, the response of the system is obtained by solving the Fokker-Plank-Kolmogorov (FPK) equation associated with the averaged Itô equations. A Duffing oscillator with time-delayed feedback bang-bang control under combined harmonic and white noise excitations is taken as an example to illustrate the proposed method. The analytical results are confirmed by digital simulation. We found that the time delay in feedback bang-bang control will deteriorate the control effectiveness and cause bifurcation of stochastic jump of Duffing oscillator.

Abstract:A stochastic optimal time-delay control method for stochastically excited nonlinear systems was proposed based on the stochastic averaging method for time-delay systems and the stochastic dynamical programming principle. The stochastic optimal time-delay control problem of nonlinear systems was converted into another non-time-delay optimal control problem by using the stochastic averaging method for time-delay systems. The dynamical programming equation for the converted control problem was established based on the stochastic dynamical programming principle. The optimal control law was obtained from this equation,and the optimal active time-delay control law was obtained by the transformation of the present and past system states. The optimal semi-active time-delay control law was also obtained according to the Bingham model of MR dampers. An example of stochastically excited and controlled hysteretic column was given to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed stochastic optimal time-delay control method.
