Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel modulation scheme termed as generalized frequency division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (GFDM-OFDM) for intensity-modulated direct-detection (IM-DD) optical communication systems. In our scheme, the low-frequency band is allocated to a GFDM signal to achieve a low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), while the high-frequency band is filled with an OFDM signal that is robust to frequency-domain variations. By this means, the PAPR of the whole signal can be reduced and the high-frequency fading effects induced by the electronic components can be mitigated, leading to an improved system performance. Simulation results show that our proposed GFDM-OFDM format outperforms OFDM and GFDM formats in terms of optical receiver sensitivity for both the back-to-back (BTB) and 10-km transmissions. The GFDM-OFDM signal achieves receiver sensitivity improvements of approximately 3.0 dB and 1.6 dB, compared to the OFDM and GFDM signals, respectively.

Abstract:We present a low-cost intensity-modulated direct detection (IM/DD) system for the transmission of high-order Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) signals. By adopting the 1-bit quantized Delta-sigma modulation (DSM) technology, we quantized the Discrete Multi-Tone modulation (DMT) time-domain waveform carrying the higher-order QAM signal into on-off keying (OOK) signal, and successfully realized the transmission of the higher-order QAM signal on the IM/DD link. Thanks to the high quantization SNR of the DSM modulator, up to 4096QAM transmission is supported. In particular, through the use of Vestigial Side Band (VSB) and pre-equalization, we experimentally demonstrated the transmission of 100G baud DSM-OOK signal in C-band 50 km fiber. The experimental results show that the bit error ratio (BER) of the 1024QAM signal can reach the hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold 3.8 x 10(-3), and the BER of the 4096QAM signal can reach the soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold 4.2 x 10(-2). To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of high-speed DSM signal transmission on optical fiber links.

Abstract:Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a promising solution for short-reach links. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate transmission of 128-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in an IM/DD optical system. Vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation with 20-dB suppression ratio enabled by a cost-effective interleave or a tunable optical filter (TOF) is employed to eliminate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading. Meanwhile, a combination of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as pre-equalization, nonlinearity equalization (NE), and decision-directed least mean square (DDLMS), are utilized to mitigate the system distortions and improve system performance. By using this scheme, the 32-GBd DFT-spread OFDM signals can be successfully transmitted over 320-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with the measured bit error ratio (BER) under the soft-decision forward-error- correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). We also achieved 144-Gb/s for 80-km SSMF transmission. Additionally, 4 x 128-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) DFT-S OFDM signals transmission over 320-km SSMF is experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the longest transmission distance for beyond 100-Gb/s IM/DD system.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for short-reach optical link. Intensity modulation/direct detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method, due to its low cost and power consumption. In the aspect of digital signal processing (DSP), discrete Fourier transform-spread (DFT-s) precoding can be used to reduce peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and average the noise among the subcarriers. In addition, probabilistic shaping (PS) turns out to further increase the system capacity. We experimentally demonstrated a 200 Gbit/s single λ dual band DMT transmission with a spectrum efficiency (SE) of 6.29 bit/s/Hz. The achievable information rate (AIR) of the proposed dual band signal increases about 30 Gbit/s compared with that of single band signal. Moreover, single-sideband (SSB) signal and signal with guard band are implemented to mitigate the frequency selective fading of optical fiber chromatic dispersion (CD). The performance of these two methods are quite closed for short reach transmission. Considering the signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) introduced by the SSB signal, an extra Volterra filter is applied in DSP. Besides, an extra optical filter is required to generate the SSB signal.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a four-channel wavelength-division-multiplex (WDM) 560 Gbit/s 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (128QAM)-Discrete MultiTone (DMT) signal transmission in a short reach interconnect. Coordinated discrete Fourier transform-spread and preequalization are jointly used to simultaneously overcome serious frequency domain power attenuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the DMT signal. An additional postdecision-directed least mean square equalizer is used afterward to further compensate the channel response and mitigate the devices’ implementation penalty. These proposed algorithms and equalizer are validated through experiment in this paper, we achieved the highest capacity signal transmission in the four-channel WDM transmission system using intensitymodulation and directdetection over a 2.4-km single mode fiber with a bit-error-ratio under the hard-decision forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 .

Abstract:In this paper, a low-density parity check (LDPC) coded GFDM with high-level modulation scheme is proposed for more flexible and advanced multicarrier modulation in intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical systems. Then, we experimentally demonstrate an LDPC-coded GFDM with 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) system transmitted over 20-km standard single-mode fiber at different symbol rates to verify the applicability of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, the proposed scheme with trellis-coded 32-quadrature amplitude modulation (TC-32QAM) has also been investigated and compared with the bit error rate (BER) performance with 16QAM-modulated condition. The results indicate that TC-32QAM-modulated GFDM method has a better performance than the 16QAM-modulated case. But with LDPC coding module added, the performance of the proposed system with TC-32QAM gets worse than that with 16QAM modulation. We also experimentally compare the proposed LDPC-coded scheme and the Turbo-coded scheme in the QAM-modulated GFDM IM/DD optical system. The results show the LDPC-coded optical (LCO-) GFDM scheme has lower power penalties and better BER performance. Moreover, the proposed LCO-GFDM scheme is applied in multiband transmission by optical simulation software, and the results show that multiband LCO-GFDM scheme has a better performance than that of LCO-OFDM scheme.

Abstract:Weakly coupled mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) systems based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) are a good candidate for further improving the capacity of short-reach optical interconnections. However, restrained by the modal crosstalk of the transmission link and the reception of degenerate mode groups (DMGs) utilizing bandwidth-limited multimode photodetectors (PDs), high-speed MDM IM-DD has encountered a capacity bottleneck. In this Letter, we investigate a high-speed weakly coupled MDM IM-DD transmission system utilizing a degenerate mode diversity receiver scheme adopting high-bandwidth single-mode PDs over a multiple-ring-core (MRC) few-mode fiber (FMF) and a low-crosstalk mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DMUX). An MDM IM-DD transmission with four DMGs and eight wavelengths is experimentally demonstrated with 112-GBaud four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) and probabilistically shaped PAM8 per lane over 200-m weakly coupled MRC-FMF. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of the MDM IM-DD transmission system with up to 112-GBaud baud rate and beyond 6.4-Tb/s net rate. Meanwhile, the experimental results show that the proposed MDM IM-DD transmission link has a superior performance only adopting a low-complexity feedforward equalizer, making it a promising candidate for high-speed optical interconnections.

Abstract:In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a 1550-nm direct modulation laser (DML)-based dual-band Nyquist PAM-4 intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) system using a real-time field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based receiver. Although the sampling rate of the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) used in the receiver is only 5-GSa/s and there is no mixer at the receiver side, the system can successfully realize 22-km SSMF transmission with 20-Gb/s data rate by using super-Nyquist sampling technique. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of non-single-band signal transmission over IMDD system based on super-Nyquist sampling technique. In addition, power weighting technique is also applied in the system. The experimental results show that with the help of power weighting technique, the BER of the system can be reduced from 6.1×10-3 to 2.6×10-3.

Abstract:Multiple-input-multiple-output digital signal processing (DSP) has become a severe bottleneck for mode division multiplexing (MDM) because of its huge computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for real-time DSP-free intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) MDM transmission, in which the transmission few-mode fiber (FMF) is characterized by multiple-ring-core structure to suppress modal crosstalk among each LP mode, while each pair of non-circularly-symmetric degenerate modes is simultaneously demultiplexed by a degenerate-mode-selective fiber coupler for DSP-free reception. Based on a 10 km ultralow-modal-crosstalk double-ring-core FMF and a pair of all-fiber 4-LP-mode MUX/DEMUX, we demonstrate the first IM/DD MDM prototype system using commercial single-mode (SM) 10 Gbps SFP + modules and 4K video transceivers without any hardware modifications. The temperature and wavelength dependence are evaluated. The stable Q(2)-factor performance proves that it can be a smooth evolution scheme from conventional SM IM/DD systems. Moreover, the scheme can be further extended to support more modes with improved FMF design adopting more ring areas. Abstract:The limited band of optical and electrical devices in an intensity-modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is considered to be a major bottleneck that hinders the increase in transmission capacity. Spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing are key technologies to improving the performance of IM/DD for high-speed short-reach optical systems. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel Nyquist eight-level, pulse-amplitude, single-carrier modulation with frequency-domain equalization (PAM8-SCFDE). In addition, 40-GBd Nyquist PAM8-SCFDE signals can be successfully transmitted over 2-km standard single-mode fiber or 20-km large effective area fiber based on 10-G-class DAC and photodiode. Therefore, the achieved aggregate data rate is 120 Gb/s, and the measured bit error rate (BER) is under 7% pre-forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Compared with conventional PAM8, this scheme can provide double spectral efficiency and 6-dB receiver sensitivity improvement.

Abstract:We present a detailed comparison of applying three advanced modulation formats including pulse amplitude modulation-8 (PAM-8), carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation-64 QAM (CAP-64), and discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) with a bandwidth-limited direct-detection receiver for 100 Gb/s/λ optical transmission systems. These modulation formats are all experimentally demonstrated with corresponding digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. The comparison is carried out to evaluate the performance of each modulation format in terms of nonlinear equalization, received optical power and optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR). Our experimental results show that only 112 Gbit/s DFT-S OFDM is successfully achieved over 50 km of SSMF under the hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10−3.

Abstract:Record high 19.125 Gb/s real-time end-to-end dual-band optical OFDM (OOFDM) transmission is experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, in a simple electro-absorption modulated laser (EML)-based 25 km standard SMF system using intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD). Adaptively modulated baseband (0-2GHz) and passband (6.125 ± 2GHz) OFDM RF sub-bands, supporting line rates of 10 Gb/s and 9.125 Gb/s respectively, are independently generated and detected with FPGA-based DSP clocked at only 100 MHz and DACs/ADCs operating at sampling speeds as low as 4GS/s. The two OFDM sub-bands are electrically frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) for intensity modulation of a single optical carrier by an EML. To maximize and balance the signal transmission performance of each sub-band, on-line adaptive features and on-line performance monitoring is fully exploited to optimize key OOFDM transceiver and system parameters, which includes subcarrier characteristics within each individual OFDM sub-band, total and relative sub-band power as well as EML operating conditions. The achieved 19.125 Gb/s over 25 km SMF OOFDM transmission system has an optical power budget of 13.5 dB, and shows almost identical bit error rate (BER) performances for both the baseband and passband signals. In addition, experimental investigations also indicate that the maximum achievable transmission capacity of the present system is mainly determined by the EML frequency chirp-enhanced chromatic dispersion effect, and the passband BER performance is not affected by the two sub-band-induced intermixing effect, which, however, gives a 1.2dB optical power penalty to the baseband signal transmission.

Abstract:A cost-efficient dual-band transmission scheme based on return-to-zero (RTZ)mode digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and sub-Nyquist sampling analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is proposed in this paper. The scheme can increase the data rate and meanwhile halve the required sampling rate of the DAC/ADC in optical intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) transmission system. Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate a dual-band discrete Fourier transformation spread (DFT-S) OFDM intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) system. Although the sampling rate of the DAC and ADC used in the receiver is only 5-GSa/s and there is no mixer and oscillator at the transmitter and receiver side, 22-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission with up to 26.33-Gb/s data rate is successfully realized. The experimental results show that in the system, the first sub-band transmission based on 128-QAM mapping can achieve a bit error rate (BER) below 3.8 x 10(-3). The second sub-band transmission based on 32-QAM mapping can achieve a BER below 2.4 x 10(-2). The spectral efficiency (SE) of the first sub-band signal is up to 6.14 bit/s/Hz and the SE of the second sub-band signal is up to 4.39 bit/s/Hz. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 8-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signal transmission in 4 modes over 20-m multimode fiber (MMF) in an intensity modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) system. By combining the probabilistic shaping (PS) technique with high order pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) format, 40-GBaud PS-PAM8 signal transmission in the WDM + MDM IM/DD system achieves a total net bit rate of 3-Tbit/s. With the aid of a multiple input single output (MISO) neural network (NN) equalizer, we obtain a 1.6-dB receiver sensitivity gain compared with traditional digital signal processing (DSP), including multiple input multiple outputs (MIMO) time domain equalizer (TDE).
