The Landscape of Chinese Invention Patents: Quantity, Density, and Intensity

Abstract:It has been more than three decades since China established its patent system in 1985. Over the years, China’s patent system has matured considerably, accompanied by the soaring number of its patent applications. According to China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA, 2017), the accumulated number of patent applications that CNIPA received during the 1985–2016 period reached 21.7 million, of which about 7.7 million (35.4%) are invention patents. In 2016, China topped the world with the highest number of invention patent applications, a record total of 1.3 million. This figure was more than the combined total of invention patent applications received by the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the European patent offices (WIPO, 2017). Despite the growing number of patent applications in China, the distribution pattern of patenting activity at the city level has yet to be investigated due to lack of fine-grained geocoded patent data.
