Abstract:Accurate synthesis of antenna radiation behavior is a complementary step towards simulation in antenna systems design process. In this paper, a spherical harmonic decomposition (SHD) and coupled structure electromagnetic statistical model (CSESM) methods are hybridized and adapted for the first time, to actively synthesize radiation characteristics using antenna feed array. The problem of finding the feed array aperture size, capable of synthesizing a required field intensity distribution, within a specified region for a reflector system signaling a satellite is also addressed. Relationship that exist between the required number of elements in feed array, frequency of operation, volume of the synthesis region, and the required reflector size is theoretically benchmarked. EM radiation behavior via antenna feed array is optimally synthesized using the proposed SHD-CSESM-based method. With this approach, operation limits on the synthesis of the signal field within a test volume of a given radius is predicted. Efficiency and effectiveness of SHD-CSESM-based EM field synthesis scheme unveiled are investigated for structures in a region where feed antennas are positioned distance away (focal point) from reflector system operating at Ka band. Experimental measurement data of a circularly polarized Ka-band 2×2-antenna feed array is compared with the proposed theoretical method, and results obtained demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, for any wave number k or frequency f, the field radiation behaviour within the sphere can be accurately synthesized using and N order expansion and V≥(4N+1)/N array size. Results obtained show that the proposed synthesis method handles constrains related to both aperture domain and radiation domain. Hence, SHD-CSESM-based technique is a good candidate for EM field synthesis, with the notion of automating system design processes in the emerging and future EM field applications.

Abstract:Surface electromagnetics studies the interactions of electromagnetic waves with various natural or engineered surfaces. These interactions can be categorized into two groups: surface wave interaction and plane wave interaction. The former group focuses on the wave propagation along surfaces, and two representative examples in this group are the modulated meta surface antennas and the gap waveguide technology of previous chapters. The latter group mainly studies the reflection and transmission of a plane wave when it impinges on a specific surface. This chapter will present the designs and applications of some transmission surfaces that belong to the latter group. In general, an engineered surface is designed to convert an incident wave into a scattered wave with the desired magnitude, phase, and polarization [1, 2]. According to the surface equivalence principle, if we enclose actual sources, such as antennas or scatterers, with an imaginary surface, the field outside that surface can be determined by the equivalent surface electric and magnetic fields that satisfy the boundary conditions [3]. On one hand, if we can obtain the surface electric and magnetic fields from a source either through computation or measurement, we will be able to determine the radiation field outside the surface. On the other hand, if we know the source and expect to obtain a radiation field that is different to the direct radiation field from the source, we can design an engineered surface to enclose the original source. Abstract:The electromagnetic surface antenna array（EMSAA）has been proposed for obtaining reflection suppression and excellent radiation simultaneously. The antenna with rectangular radiation patch is used to design anisotropic electromagnetic surface. Preternatural reflection characteristics of the element antenna can be tailored depending on the incident polarizations.EMSAA can be constructed by using single structured element antenna with 90° rotation and orthometric arrangement. This orthometric arrangement of EMSAA is helpful to achieve reflection suppression and excellent radiation. The simulated results show that the reflection of EMSAA is suppressed from 5.0 GHz to 8.0 GHz with peak reduction of 12.3 dB. The linear-and circularpolarized radiation properties of EMSAA are obtained and the maximum gain is 14.3 dBi. The measured results are consistent with the simulation results. The results demonstrate that the reflection suppression and excellent radiation are achieved simultaneously. Such design of EMSAA will open the path for integrating antenna fields and electromagnetic surface（EMS） fields.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, composed of 2-D planar arrays of sub-wavelength metallic or dielectric scatterers, have provided unprecedented freedoms in manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves upon interfaces. The development of metasurface has always been closely related to antennas. On the one hand, metasurface was developed from reflect arrays/transmit arrays that are used as reflectors/lens of antennas, and most fundamental theories of metasurfaces are directly borrowed from antenna array theories; on the other hand, the development of antennas was flourished and expedited by progresses in metasurfaces. Many emerging antenna configurations have been constructed based on unique functional metasurfaces. In this article, we will review briefly the development roadmap of both metasurfaces and metasurface-based antennas, including antenna-inspired metasurfaces, metasurface-assisted antennas, and metasurface antennas. In particular, the recent fusion of metasurface and antenna as metantenna will bring significant impacts on methodologies of functional metasurface, antenna design, and radio-frequency device miniaturization.

Abstract:To integrate antennas into the curved surface of a mounted platform, a broadband flexible antenna array has been investigated in this letter, which maintains ultra-wideband lower scattering as well. The proposed array features a unique structure, combining two mirror-symmetrical types of metasurface-inspired antenna elements to create a 2 x 2 crossover array. This antenna array effectively reduces radar cross section (RCS) in the ultra-wideband without the need for additional components. Measured results indicate the proposed antenna array achieves a relative operating bandwidth exceeding 84% in both planar and deformed states and with peak gain over 13.3 dBi at 7 GHz. In comparison to a flexible equivalent metallic plane, the proposed antenna array demonstrates a relative 6 dB RCS reduction bandwidth exceeding 100.7% in planar state and over 75% in various deformed states.

Abstract:The energy selective surface (ESS) has been widely studied in the field of electromagnetic protection for high power. However, there are still challenges for shielding high-power waves with large angles of incidence. Here, a reconfigurable ESS based on origami is proposed. Utilizing origami, the density of x-direction strips is increased, thus increasing the shielding strength for TM mode. By parameters sweeping, an ESS that satisfies simultaneously shielding requirements for both polarizations can be designed. This work opens an alternative way to design ESS for any angles of incidence and dual polarization.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are ultrathin metamaterials consisting of planar electromagnetic (EM) microstructures (e.g., meta-atoms) with pre-determined EM responses arranged in specific sequences. Based on careful structural designs on both meta-atoms and global sequences, one can realize homogenous and inhomogeneous metasurfaces that can possess exceptional capabilities to manipulate EM waves, serving as ideal candidates to realize ultracompact and highly efficient EM devices for next-generation integration-optics applications. In this paper, we present an overview on the development of metasurfaces, including both homogeneous and inhomogeneous ones, focusing particularly on their working principles, the fascinating wave-manipulation effects achieved both statically and dynamically, and the representative applications so far realized. Finally, we also present our own perspectives on possible future directions of this fast-developing research field in the conclusion.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, due to their outstanding ability to control electromagnetic waves, have great application prospects in the field of wireless communication. This paper provides a comprehensive review of research work based on metasurface in three aspects: wireless power transfer, wireless information transmission, and novel wireless transceiver architectures. In the domain of wireless power transfer, several focusing metasurfaces and systems with unique performance are presented along with a new formula for calculating wireless power transfer. Concerning wireless information transmission section, the direct digital information transmission based on metasurface and the information transmission based on space-time-coding digital metasurface are introduced. Lastly, a simplified wireless transceiver with metasurfaces was introduced. The paper concludes with a discussion on the future directions of metasurfaces in the wireless communication domain.

Abstract:Electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures have been widely explored in recent years. Due to their unique electromagnetic features, various antenna and device applications have been reported. One important feature of EBG structures is the in-phase reflection coefficient, which enables one to design low profile antennas without losing radiation efficiency. However, most research is focused on square unit EBG surfaces that are independent on polarization states. In this paper, polarization dependent EBG (PDEBG) surfaces are investigated. A numerical model, various EBG surface designs, and potential antenna applications are presented.

Abstract:This paper briefly reviews the recent progress of characteristic modes (CMs) for radiation problems made in the Temasek Laboratories at National University of Singapore (TL @ NUS). Unique features of the CMs offer great flexibility for the design of high performance antennas. Based on our newly developed in-house software tools for modeling CMs for 3D EM structures and N-port networks, the applications we considered include reactively controlled antenna arrays, circularly polarized antennas, platform integrated antennas, and resonant frequency characterization of microstrip antennas. Effective use of CMs can be great help in many antenna designs through proper feeding designs for an existing radiating aperture. This proposed design concept will provide an alternative to change the conventional process of antenna designs, and is also what the CM theory can really benefit the antenna community.

Abstract:A theoretical study on electromagnetic scattering mechanism of 4-D antenna arrays is performed for the first time. First, the scattering fields of one antenna element within an infinite 4-D array are derived under periodic boundary conditions. In order to estimate the scattering performances of 4-D antenna arrays, numerical models of the scattering fields are then established based on the traditional scattering pattern multiplication theory. Moreover, an effective time-domain full-wave approach is proposed for the scattering cross section (SCS) simulation of 4-D arrays. Finally, to verify the feasibility for SCS reduction through 4-D arrays, the differential evolution (DE) algorithm is adopted to synthesize a 14-element microstrip patch antenna array for the optimization of radiation and scattering performances. Numerical results show that 4-D arrays are capable of scattering the incident waves in both space domain and frequency domain simultaneously, thus accomplishing remarkable in-band SCS reduction.

Abstract:Owing to their remarkable capability to modify electromagnetic waves at microwave and optical frequencies, metasurfaces are now the subject of a substantial amount of study and find utility in a wide variety of applications. These artificial sheet materials, which are typically made up of metallic patches or dielectric etchings in planar or multi-layer confi¬gurations with a thickness of subwavelength, have the benefits of being lightweight, easy to fabricate, and able to control wave propagation both on the surface and in the free space that surrounds it. This article provides an overview of recent advancements in the discipline and organizes those advancements according to their applications. The one-of-a-kind capabilities of many types of metasurfaces have come to light, beginning with the invention of frequency selective surfaces, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, and metamaterials. Patterning the metasurface unit cells allows for surface impedance to be altered and modified, which has wide-ranging applications in surface wave absorbers and surface waveguides. First and foremost, the purpose of this review article is to provide introductions to the fundamental metasurface, its important features, and application ideas. The authors address the most recent progress in metamaterial-inspired antennas and how they can be used to miniaturize antennas, increase gain and bandwidth, achieve circular polarization, and inhibit mutual coupling in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems. In conclusion, exploring the research implications of the metasurface development trend and the significant engineering practical applications are shown in the conclusions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the electromagnetic field radiated by VLF spaceborne arrays on the sea surface, where two typical array forms (circular array and curtain array) are under consideration. The closed-form expression for the magnetic field generated on the sea surface is derived through analyzing the wave propagation process via a transmedium (ionosphere-air-sea) path, and the array factors as well as the constraint relations between each element’s current phase and the directed radiation coordinate are given for both array configurations. Computations and analyses show that directed radiation towards sea surface can be effectively realized by adopting array transmitters in VLF spaceborne transmissions. Despite an array with more elements will have greater field strength at the receiving points, the marginal gain of radiation intensity decreases as the element number increases. The results also indicate that a larger geomagnetic dip angle usually leads to a higher excitation efficiency, as long as the dip angle does not exceed the critical angle.
