Abstract:A novel design of highly preorganized bicyclic monomers, based on quadruple hydrogen bonding motifs, is proposed to access noncovalent cavitands with large internal volumes and interesting shapes. Selective formation of tetrameric aggregates was demonstrated and the newly obtained cyclic assemblies were fully characterized by NMR and gel permeation chromatography. The high fidelity of the aggregation process, high aggregate stability and simple synthesis of the monomer open up the way for future use of the herein reported new class of cavitands in various fields of supramolecular chemistry.

In the solid state, one of the cavitands forms an infinite chain by intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Abstract:Supramolecular polymers constructed by orthogonal self-assembly based on multiple hydrogen bonding and macrocyclic host-guest interactions have received increasing attention due to their elegant structures, outstanding properties, and potential applications. Hydrogen bonding endows these supramolecular polymers with good adaptability and reversibility, while macrocyclic host-guest interactions give them good selectivity and versatile stimuli-responsiveness. Therefore, functional supramolecular polymers fabricated by these two highly specific, noninterfering interactions in an orthogonal way have shown wide applications in the fields of molecular machines, electronics, soft materials, etc. In this review, we discuss the recent advances of functional supramolecular polymers fabricated by orthogonal self-assembly based on multiple hydrogen bonding and host-guest interactions. In particular, we focus on crown ether- and pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular polymers due to their compatibility with multiple hydrogen bonds in organic solution. The fabrication strategies, interesting properties, and potential applications of these advanced supramolecular materials are mainly concerned. Design and Construction of Supramolecular Assemblies Containing Bis(M-Phenylene)-32-Crown-10-Based Cryptands

Abstract:Crown ether-based cryptands have attracted much attention not only because of their 3D spatial architectures but also due to their good application prospects. In recent years, our group has prepared a series of supramolecular assemblies containing bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands. Firstly, by attaching a bisthiotetrathiafulvalene (STTFS) unit to the third arm of the cryptand, a redox-switchable cryptand was synthesized successfully. It was found that the dethreading-rethreading processes between this cryptand and the guests could be well-controlled in different redox states owing to the specific redox-active properties of the STTFS unit. Secondly, two types of cryptand-based host-guest complexes were also constructed successfully, in which P=O functional groups were located at the different positions of the third arms. These two new cryptands were capable of forming [2] pseudorotaxanes with the paraquat guest both in solution and in the solid state. Moreover, the generated [2] pseudorotaxanes could further self-assemble into supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes in the solid state. Interestingly, it was found that two different types of supramolecular poly[2] pseudorotaxanes were formed in almost linear and zigzag shapes in the solid state. Thirdly, a pillar[5] arene-fused cryptand with two different cavities was also synthesized successfully. The cavity of BMP32C10-based cryptand in this tricyclic host molecule could selectively interact with the paraquat guest. The complexation behaviours between host and two different guest species were selective, and more importantly, in an orthogonal fashion. And based on this orthogonal self-assembly of two host-guest interactions, a novel type of supramolecular polymer was constructed easily and conveniently. These above researches of cryptands will provide the diverse motifs for the constructions of molecular devices and supramolecular materials.

Abstract:Self-assembly is ubiquitous in nature. Biological systems utilize nonocovalent forces to control the self-assembly process precisely, resulting in the formation of complicated structures with multiple functions. Inspired by the structure of biological macromolecules, chemists are engaged in developing highly-ordered artificial supramolecular assemblies such as supramolecular polymers, which exhibit great significance in the formation of various supramolecular architectures, and more importantly, the potential applications of dynamic supramolecular materials. In recent years more and more attentions have been paid to crown ethers, one of the most commonly used hosts in supramolecular chemistry, which serve as the building blocks to construct functional supramolecular assemblies due to their facilitated syntheses, convenient structure modification and unique complexation properties with a variety of guest molecules. This review focuses on supramolecular polymers based on crown ether derivatives.

Abstract:This paper describes a novel, highly efficient approach to the self-assembly of monomacrocycles and two-layered capsules by using dynamic covalent chemistry. Intramolecular hydrogen-bonding was used to preorganize aromatic amide-based monomers that contain aldehyde and tert-butoxycarbonylamino units. As a result, in the presence of an excess of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), four monomers could self-couple to produce macrocycles selectively through the formation of three imine or hydrazone bonds. Three dipodal precursors were also prepared by connecting two hydrogen-bonded segments with a flexible linker. In the presence of TFA, these precursors could also self-couple, leading to the exclusive formation of two-layered capsules. As a result of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding, all the macrocycles and capsules were stable in solution and could be purified by simple recrystallization. The new capsules were able to form complexes with linear propylenediammonium derivatives to give unique two-layered pseudo[3]rotaxanes.

Abstract:A series of macrocycles, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, pillararenes and cucurbiturils, are well known to be able to associate various organic/inorganic/biological guest molecules and ions in their well-defined cyclic cavities to form stable host-guest complexes and supramolecular systems through the cooperative contributions of various non-covalent interactions. When one or more functional groups are attached to the cavity of macrocycles or guest molecules, enhanced and/or controlled host-guest associations may take place, leading to not only improved host-guest binding abilities but also fascinating properties. In this review, some representative contributions in the construction of controllable macrocyclic supramolecular assemblies in aqueous solution are presented with an emphasis on the stimuli-responsive control manner and wide applications of this property.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers not only possess many advantages of traditional polymers, but also have many unique characteristics. Supramolecular polymers can be constructed by self-assembly of various noncovalent interactions. Host-guest interaction, as one important type of noncovalent interactions, has been widely applied to construct supramolecular polymers. From the perspective of classification of the recognition system motifs, host-guest recognition motifs mainly include crown ether, cyclodextrin, calixarene, cucurbituril, and pillararene-based host-guest recognition pairs. Crown ethers, as the first-generation macrocyclic hosts, have played a very important part in the development of supramolecular chemistry. Due to the easy modification of crown ethers, various crown ether derivatives have been prepared by attaching some functional groups to the edges of crown ethers, which endowed them with some interesting properties and made them ideal candidates for the fabrication of supramolecular polymers. This review gives a review of the preparation of crown ether-based supramolecular polymers (CSPs) and summarizes crown ether-based recognition pairs, organization methods, topological structures, stimuli-responsiveness, and functional characteristics.

Abstract:The role of the C–I⋯O halogen bonding in crown ether chemistry has been analyzed and rationalized by using thirteen newly synthesized cocrystals as models. The monotopic C–I⋯O halogen bonding was found to play a dominant role, whereas the bifurcated halogen bonding and the hydrogen-bond enhanced halogen bonding play minor roles. An unexpected new finding is that some binary mixtures of halogen-bond donor and acceptor can spontaneously absorb trace amounts of water from the solvent during the crystal growth period, forming more complex ternary cocrystals.

Abstract:Two new hydrazide-based quadruple hydrogen-bonding motifs are described. Dipodals based on these two motifs are revealed to form supramolecular polymers, which can further aggregate to form vesicles and/or organogels in hydrocarbons. The quadruple hydrogen-bonding motifs are characterized by the Xray diffraction and (2D) H-1 NMR experiments, while the vesicles and organogels are evidenced by SEM, AFM TEM, and fluorescent microscopy. Abstract:To introduce crown ethers into the struts of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), general approaches have been developed for the syntheses of dicarboxylic acid dibenzo[30]crown‐10 (DB30C10DA), dicarboxylic acid di‐2,3‐naphtho[30]crown‐10 (DN30C10DA), dicarboxylic acid bisparaphenylene[34]crown‐10 (BPP34C10DA), and dicarboxylic acid 1,5‐naphthoparaphenylene[36]crown‐10 (NPP36C10DA). These novel crown ethers not only retain the characteristics of their parent crown ethers since they can 1) bind cationic guests and 2) serve as templates for making mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs), such as catenanes and rotaxanes, but they also present coordination sites to connect with secondary building units (SBUs) in MOFs. The binding behavior of BPP34C10DA with 1,1′‐dimethyl‐4,4′‐bipyridinium bis(hexafluorophosphate) (DMBP ⋅ 2 PF 6 ) has been investigated by means of UV/Vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopic techniques. The crystal superstructure of the complex DMBP ⋅ 2 PF 6 ⊂ BPP34C10DA was determined by X‐ray crystallography. The NPP36C10DA‐based [2]catenane (H 2 NPP36C10DC‐CAT ⋅ 4 PF 6 ) and the BPP34C10DA‐based [2]catenane (H 2 BPP34C10DC‐CAT ⋅ 4 PF 6 ) were prepared in DMF at room temperature by the template‐directed clipping reactions of the planarly chiral NPP36C10DA and BPP34C10DA with 1,1′‐[1,4‐phenylenebis(methylene)]di‐4,4′‐bipyridin‐1‐ium bis(hexafluorophosphate) and 1,4‐bis(bromomethyl)benzene, respectively. The crystal structure of the dimethyl ester (BPP34C10DE‐CAT ⋅ 4 PF 6 ) of the [2]catenane H 2 BPP34C10DC‐CAT ⋅ 4 PF 6 was investigated by X‐ray crystallography, which revealed racemic R and S isomers with planar chirality present in the crystal in a 1:1 ratio. These crown ether based struts serve as excellent organic ligands to bind with transition metal ions in the construction of MOFs: the crown ethers BPP34C10DA and NPP36C10DA in the presence of Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ⋅ 4 H 2 O afforded the MOF‐1001 and MOF‐1002 frameworks, respectively. The crystal structures of MOF‐1001 and MOF‐1002 are both cubic and display Fm $\bar 3$ m symmetry. The unit cell parameter of the metal–organic frameworks is a =52.9345 Å. Since such MOFs, containing electron‐donating crown ethers are capable of docking incoming electron‐accepting substrates in a stereoelectronically controlled fashion, the present work opens a new access to the preparation and application of MOFs.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers, polymeric systems beyond the molecule, have attracted more and more attention from scientists due to their applications in various fields, including stimuli-responsive materials, healable materials, and drug delivery. Due to their good selectivity and convenient enviro-responsiveness, crown ether-based molecular recognition motifs have been actively employed to fabricate supramolecular polymers with interesting properties and novel applications in recent years. In this tutorial review, we classify supramolecular polymers based on their differences in topology and cover recent advances in the marriage between crown ether-based molecular recognition and polymer science.

Abstract:Synthetic macrocyclic host molecules always play an essential role in the establishment and development of supramolecular chemistry. Along with the continuous interests in the study of classical macrocycles, recent decades have witnessed the emergence and rapid development of the chemistry and supramolecular chemistry of novel and functional macrocycles. Owing to their easy availability, a self-tunable V-shaped cavity resulted from 1,3-alternate conformation, and diversified electronic features steered by the interplay between heteroatom linkages and aromatic rings, heteracalixaromatics act as a type of versatile and powerful macrocyclic hosts in molecular recognition and fabrication of supramolecular systems. Very recently, by means of engineering the bond connectivity or the recombination of chemical bonds within heteracalixaromatics, we have devised coronarenes, a new generation of macrocycles. In this concise review, macrocyclic and supramolecular chemistry of coronarenes are summarized in the order of their syntheses, structural features, molecular recognition and self-assembly properties. In the last part of this article, personal perspectives on the study of macrocyclic and supramolecular chemistry will also be discussed.

Abstract:The formation of catenated systems can be simplified greatly if one or more rings are generated via self-assembly. Herein we exploit the orthogonality of coordination-driven self-assembly and crown-ether host-guest complexation to obtain a [4]molecular necklace and a [7]molecular necklace based on a well-developed recognition motif of 1,2-bis(pyridinium)ethane/dibenzo[24]crown-8. By adapting the bis(pyridinium) motif into the backbone of a donor building block, the resulting semirigid dipyridyl species can serve both as a structural element in the formation of metallacycles and as a site for subsequent host-guest chemistry. The pseudolinear nature of the donor precursor lends itself to the formation of triangular and hexagonal central metallacycles based on the complementary acceptor unit used. This exemplary system organizes up to 18 molecules from three unique species in solution to afford a single supramolecular ensemble.
